By their very nature, construction projects can create seemingly
endless opportunities for conflict. Written by a best selling
author with over 40 years of experiences in the construction and
general contracting business, Construction Process Planning and
Management provides you with the necessary tools to save time and
money on your construction project. In this book, Sid Levy provides
valuable advice for avoiding or working through the common problems
that are a result of the long-term nature of construction projects,
failure to select a ?project delivery system? appropriate to the
project, incomplete drawing and specifications, unrealistic
scheduling, poor communication and coordination among participants,
and inadequate contract administration. From project genesis,
through design development to contractor and contract selection, on
to construction oversight, punch list and successful project
close-out, this book will point out those pitfalls to avoid and
offer practical advice at every step along the way.
Industrialists developing new food and pharmaceutical products face
the challenge of innovation in an increasingly competitive market
that must consider incredient cost, product added-value,
expectations of a healthy life-style, improved sensory impact,
controlled delivery of active compounds and last, but not lease,
product stability. While much work has been done to explore,
understand, and address these issues, a gap has emerged between
recent advances in fundamental knowledge and its direct application
to product situations with a growing need for scientific input.
This volume provides a broad overview of important new advances in
the field of Neuropharmacology. In 20 chapters, a selection of
international contributors discuss topics including endocannabinoid
function, pain, stress, astrocytes etc, and new possibilities for
treatments of neurological diseases with neuropharmacological
approaches.
Advances in Imaging and Electron Physics merges two long-running serials--Advances in Electronics and Electron Physics and Advances in Optical and Electron Microscopy. This series features extended articles on the physics of electron devices (especially semiconductor devices), particle optics at high and low energies, microlithography, image science and digital image processing, electromagnetic wave propagation, electron microscopy, and the computing methods used in all these domains. Updated with contributions from leading international scholars
and industry experts
Joe Celko has looked deep into the code of SQL programmers and
found a consistent and troubling pattern - a frightening lack of
consistency between their individual encoding schemes and those of
the industries in which they operate. This translates into a series
of incompatible databases, each one an island unto itself that is
unable to share information with others in an age of
internationalization and business interdependence. Such
incompatibility severely hinders information flow and the quality
of company data.
In the forty-eight years that have gone by since the first volume
of Progress in Optics was published, optics has become one of the
most dynamic fields of science. The volumes in this series which
have appeared up to now contain more than 300 review articles by
distinguished research workers, which have become permanent records
for many important developments.
Quantification and modalities have always been topics of great
interest for logicians. These two themes emerged from philosophy
and
This well-established international series examines major areas of basic and clinical research within neuroscience, as well as emerging and promising subfields. Multi-scale analysis and simulation of chemical processing and reactions have received unprecedented attention in recent years; however, measurement technology focused on multi-scale structures, particularly on meso-scale phenomena, has not been sufficiently addressed. This volume of "Advances in Chemical Engineering" focuses on the ""Characterization of Flow, Particles and Interfaces" "to alert the chemical engineering community to this challenging issue presenting six meso-scale measurement technologies.
A single volume of 41 articles, Hormone/Behavior Relations of
Clinical Importance is an authoritative selection of relevant
chapters from the Hormones Brain and Behavior 2e MRW, the most
comprehensive source of neuroendocrinological information assembled
to date (AP July 2009).
This book sets out to explain the development of modern electronic
systems and devices from the viewpoint of the semiconductor
materials (germanium, silicon, gallium arsenide and many others)
which made them possible. It covers the scientific understanding of
these materials and its intimate relationship with their technology
and many applications. It began with Michael Faraday, took off in a
big way with the invention of the transistor at Bell Labs in 1947
and is still burgeoning today. It is a story to match any artistic
or engineering achievement of man and this is the first time it has
been presented in a style suited to the non-specialist. It is
written in a lively, non-mathematical style which brings out the
excitement of discovery and the fascinating interplay between the
demands of system pull and technological push. It also looks at the
nature of some of the personal interactions which helped to shape
the modern technological world.
Electronics are used in a wide range of applications including
computing, communication, biomedical, automotive, military and
aerospace. They must operate in varying temperature and humidity
environments including indoor controlled conditions and outdoor
climate changes. Moisture, ionic contamination, heat, radiation and
mechanical stresses are all highly detrimental to electronic
devices and can lead to device failures. Therefore, it is essential
that the electronic devices be packaged for protection from their
intended environments, as well as to provide handling, assembly,
electrical and thermal considerations.
This volume presents a variety of articles that encompass the broad
scope of supramolecular chemistry. Reusch's chapter covers
biological channel compounds, while the work of Hall and Kirkovits
looks into their synthetic counterparts. Metal ion sensors,
calixarenes and "crystal engineering" are described by pioneers in
these fields. This work, whilst current and authoritative, shows us
that much remains to be undertaken and understood. It is hoped that
this volume will be of interest to those who wish to fill these
gaps; scientists already in the field and those who may see
extensions of their own work that will bring them into it.
Much like the "Chicago Manual of Style," "The Manual of Scientific
Style" addresses all stylistic matters in the relevant disciplines

community with authoritative and critical assessments of the many
aspects of physical organic chemistry. The field is a rapidly
developing one, with results and methodologies finding application
from biology to solid state physics.
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, and
original observations in the field are often the key to diagnosis
and successful treatment. Physicians new to the field as well as
seasoned practitioners will benefit from more than one hundred case
vignettes that explore the universe of epilepsy as it presents in
daily practice. Some of these cases challenge long-held views about
epilepsy and others bring the reader to the limits of our
understanding of epilepsy, both in clinical and basic science. To
improve the interface of clinical and basic science in epilepsy,
basic scientists comment on the potential mechanisms underlying
clinical observations, and clinicians assess the potential impact
of recent results of experiments in the laboratory. This book
highlights the importance that original observations have in
inspiring both new treatments and continued research.
Elsevier now offers a series of derivative works based on the acclaimed Meylers Side Effect of Drugs, 15th Edition. These individual volumes are grouped by specialty to benefit the practicing physician or health care clinician. Each year, heart disease kills more people than cancer. Patients are treated by a variety of specialists and primary care practitioners, depending on the organ system involved. This volume enables practitioners to assess the adverse effects of the complete range of drugs used in cardiovascular medicine, including antihypertensive drugs, and drugs used in the treatment of heart failure, angina, angina pectoris, and cardiac arrhythmia and enable practitioners to prescribe preventative treatments with medications such as blood pressure reducers, aspirin, and cholesterol-lowering drugs, as well as drugs used for more aggressive therapy. The material is drawn from the 15th edition of the internationally renowned encyclopedia, Meyler s Side Effects of Drugs, and the latest volumes in the companion series, Side Effects of Drugs Annuals. Drug names have usually been designated by their recommended or proposed International Non-proprietary Names (rINN or pINN); when those are not available, clinical names have been used. In some cases, brand names have been used. This volume is critical for any health professional involved in
the administration of cardiovascular mediations. The book is divided into six sections: Drugs used to treat hypertension, heart failure and angina pectorisDiuretics - a general introduction to their adverse effects, followed by monographs on individual drugsAntidysrhythmic drugs - a general introduction to their adverse effects, followed by monographs on individual drugsDrugs that act on the cerebral and peripheral circulationsAnticoagulants, thrombolytic agents, and anti-platelet drugsCardiovascular adverse effects of non-cardiovascular drugs "

Hyaluronan biology is being recognized as an important regulator of
cancer progression. Paradoxically, both hyaluronan (HA) and
hyaluronidases, the enzymes that eliminate HA, have also been
correlated with cancer progression. Hyaluronan, a long-chain
polymer of the extracellular matrix, opens up tissue spaces through
which cancer cells move and metastasize. It also confers motility
upon cells through interactions of cell-surface HA with the
cytoskeleton. Embryonic cells in the process of movement and
proliferation use the same strategy. It is an example of how cancer
cells have commandeered normal cellular processes for their own
survival and spread. There are also parallels between cancer and
wound healing, cancer occasionally being defined as a wound that
does not heal. |
