Genetics of Bone Biology and Skeletal Disease (Hardcover, New): Rajesh V. Thakker, Michael P. Whyte, John Eisman, Takashi... Genetics of Bone Biology and Skeletal Disease (Hardcover, New)
Rajesh V. Thakker, Michael P. Whyte, John Eisman, Takashi Igarashi
R2,786 Discovery Miles 27 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book identifies and analyzes the genetic basis of bone disorders in humans and demonstrates the utility of mouse models in furthering the knowledge of mechanisms and evaluations of treatments. The book is aimed at all students of bone biology and genetics, and with this in mind, it includes general introductory chapters on genetics and bone biology and more specific disease-orientated chapters, which comprehensively summarize the clinical, genetic, molecular genetic, animal model, functional and molecular pathology, diagnostic, counselling and treatment aspects of each disorder.
Saves academic, medical, and pharma researchers time in quickly accessing the very latest details on a broad range of genetic bone issues, as opposed to searching through thousands of journal articles.

Provides a common language for bone biologists and geneticists to discuss the development of bone cells and genetics and their interactions in the development of disease Researchers in all areas bone biology and genetics will gain insight into how clinical observations and practices can feed back into the research cycle and will, therefore, be able to develop more targeted genomic and proteomic assays

For those clinical researchers who are also MDs, correct diagnosis (and therefore correct treatment) of bone diseases depends on a strong understanding of the molecular basis for the disease.

Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Nanotechnology and Information Science (Hardcover, New): Yehuda B. Band, Yshai Avishai Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Nanotechnology and Information Science (Hardcover, New)
Yehuda B. Band, Yshai Avishai
R2,509 R2,377 Discovery Miles 23 770 Save R132 (5%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Quantum mechanics transcends and supplants classical mechanics at the atomic and subatomic levels. It provides the underlying framework for many subfields of physics, chemistry and materials science, including condensed matter physics, atomic physics, molecular physics, quantum chemistry, particle physics, and nuclear physics. It is the only way we can understand the structure of materials, from the semiconductors in our computers to the metal in our automobiles. It is also the scaffolding supporting much of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The purpose of this book is to present the fundamentals of quantum theory within a modern perspective, with emphasis on applications to nanoscience and nanotechnology, and information-technology. As the frontiers of science have advanced, the sort of curriculum adequate for students in the sciences and engineering twenty years ago is no longer satisfactory today. Hence, the emphasis on new topics that are not included in older reference texts, such as quantum information theory, decoherence and dissipation, and on applications to nanotechnology, including quantum dots, wires and wells.

Key Features

This book provides a novel approach to Quantum Mechanics whilst also giving readers the requisite background and training for the scientists and engineers of the 21st Century who need to come to grips with quantum phenomena.

The fundamentals of quantum theory are provided within a modern perspective, with emphasis on applications to nanoscience and nanotechnology, and information-technology.

Benefits

Older books on quantum mechanics do not contain the amalgam of ideas, concepts and tools necessary to prepare engineers and scientists to deal with the new facets of quantum mechanics and their application to quantum information science and nanotechnology.

As the frontiers of science have advanced, the sort of curriculum adequate for students in the sciences and engineering twenty years ago is no longer satisfactory today.

There are many excellent quantum mechanics books available, but none have the emphasis on nanotechnology and quantum information science thatthis book has. "

Mathematical Elasticity, Volume 27 - Volume II: Theory of Plates (Hardcover): Philippe G. Ciarlet Mathematical Elasticity, Volume 27 - Volume II: Theory of Plates (Hardcover)
Philippe G. Ciarlet
R4,146 Discovery Miles 41 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The objective of Volume II is to show how asymptotic methods, with the thickness as the small parameter, indeed provide a powerful means of justifying two-dimensional plate theories. More specifically, without any recourse to any "a priori" assumptions of a geometrical or mechanical nature, it is shown that in the linear case, the three-dimensional displacements, once properly scaled, converge in "H"1 towards a limit that satisfies the well-known two-dimensional equations of the linear Kirchhoff-Love theory; the convergence of stress is also established.

In the nonlinear case, again after "ad hoc" scalings have been performed, it is shown that the leading term of a formal asymptotic expansion of the three-dimensional solution satisfies well-known two-dimensional equations, such as those of the nonlinear Kirchhoff-Love theory, or the von Karman equations. Special attention is also given to the first convergence result obtained in this case, which leads to two-dimensional large deformation, frame-indifferent, nonlinear membrane theories. It is also demonstrated that asymptotic methods can likewise be used for justifying other lower-dimensional equations of elastic shallow shells, and the coupled pluri-dimensional equations of elastic multi-structures, i.e., structures with junctions. In each case, the existence, uniqueness or multiplicity, and regularity of solutions to the limit equations obtained in this fashion are also studied.

Chemical Engineering for Renewables Conversion, Volume 42 (Hardcover, New): Dmitry Yu Murzin Chemical Engineering for Renewables Conversion, Volume 42 (Hardcover, New)
Dmitry Yu Murzin
R4,973 Discovery Miles 49 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Biomass has received considerable attention as a sustainable feedstock that can replace diminishing fossil fuels for the production of energy and chemicals. At the present moment in the oil refining, petrochemical and chemical industry, after fractionation of crude oil, various fractions are upgraded either to fuels or functionalized to produce intermediates and specialty chemicals. An analogous concept of biorefining is based on the utilization of biomass as a renewable source of carbon, which could be transformed to valuable chemicals. Although various aspects of biomass transformations are frequently discussed in the literature, chemical engineering aspects of such transformations are commonly not considered. The aim of the present book is to fill this void.

* Updates and informs the reader on the latest research findings using original reviews * Written by leading industry experts and scholars * Reviews and analyzes developments in the field

Caloric Restriction: A Key to Understanding and Modulating Aging, Volume 1 (Hardcover, 1st ed): E. J. Masoro Caloric Restriction: A Key to Understanding and Modulating Aging, Volume 1 (Hardcover, 1st ed)
E. J. Masoro
R3,129 Discovery Miles 31 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For many years, it has been known that when rats and mice are given a reduced amount of food, their life span is increased and they remain healthy and vigorous at advanced ages.

What is the reason for this change in the usual pattern of aging? The evidence is overwhelming that the life extension results from a slowing of aging processes. And the factor responsible is the decrease in caloric intake. The obvious question: How does this factor work? A good question - and the reason that research on the anti-aging action of caloric restriction is today one of the most studied research areas in biological gerontology. For it is felt that if the biological mechanisms of the anti-aging action of caloric restriction can be uncovered, we would gain an understanding of the basic nature of aging processes, which would, in turn, yield possible interventions in human aging. This book aims to provide the growing number of researchers in this field (faculty, postdoctoral trainees, and graduate students) with a detailed knowledge of what is known about caloric restriction within the frame of gerontology, as well as insights on future of this field.

Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules, Volume 3 (Hardcover): GR Newkome Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules, Volume 3 (Hardcover)
GR Newkome
R2,983 Discovery Miles 29 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The series "Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules" aims to cover the synthesis and supramolecular chemistry of dendritic or cascade super-molecules as well as their less perfect hyperbranched cousins.
In Volume 3, Chapter 1 describes the synthesis and characterization of dendrimers and hyperbranched polyesters, both based on 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid, as the AB2-monomer. Chapter 2, discusses the advantages and drawbacks of dendritic molecular architectures necessary to create polymeric organic magnetic materials. In Chapter 3, Balzani and colleagues delineate their contributions to the field of polynuclear transition metal complexes in the design and construction of dendritic nanostructures; these luminesence and redox-active complexes suggest their role as photochemical molecular devices operating by photoinduced energy and electron transfer processes. Chapter 4, reviews the overall progress on redox-active dendrimers, especially as redox catalysts, organic conductors, modified electrodes, and models for electron transfer proteins. Chapter 5, summarizes the pioneering research in organometallic dendritic macromolecules and then delineates the redox properties of a series of silicon-based ferrocenyl-containing dendrimers.
