Catalysis is the acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst,
a substance that notably affects the rate of a chemical reaction
without itself being consumed or altered. Since 1948, "Advances in
Catalysis" has filled the gap between the papers that report on and
the textbooks that teach in the diverse areas of catalysis
research. The editors of and contributors to "Advances in
Catalysis" are dedicated to recording progress in this area.
This is a unique book on thyroid neoplasms in that it covers many
current topics in the area including tumor development, tumor
markers and preclinical treatment for advanced cancer as well as

monitoring and PET scanning). This book will give the general
reader and specialist a good foundation for what is currently going
on in the area of thyroid neoplasms.
Control engineering seeks to understand physical systems, using mathematical modeling, in terms of inputs, outputs and various components with different behaviors. It has an essential role in a wide range of control systems, from household appliances to space flight. This book provides an in-depth view of the technologies that are implemented in most varieties of modern industrial control engineering. A solid grounding is provided in traditional control techniques, followed by detailed examination of modern control techniques such as real-time, distributed, robotic, embedded, computer and wireless control technologies. For each technology, the book discusses its full profile, from the field layer and the control layer to the operator layer. It also includes all the interfaces in industrial control systems: between controllers and systems; between different layers; and between operators and systems. It not only describes the details of both real-time operating systems and distributed operating systems, but also provides coverage of the microprocessor boot code, which other books lack. In addition to working principles and operation mechanisms, this
book emphasizes the practical issues of components, devices and
hardware circuits, giving the specification parameters, install
procedures, calibration and configuration methodologies needed for
engineers to put the theory into practice.

Safety in any workplace is extremely important. In the case of the
electrical industry, safety is critical and the codes and
regulations which determine safe practices are both diverse and
complicated. Employers, electricians, electrical system designers,
inspectors, engineers and architects must comply with safety
standards listed in the National Electrical Code, OSHA and NFPA
70E. Unfortunately, the publications which list these safety
requirements are written in very technically advanced terms and the
average person has an extremely difficult time understanding
exactly what they need to do to ensure safe installations and
working environments.
This volume contains papers presented at the 1996 Center for International Education and Research in Accounting Conference. The theme of transitional and developing economies struggling with the introduction and implementation of international accounting standards is evident throughout the papers. While current events often seem to outstrip our ability to keep up, these papers provide insights into current events in the adoption and application of the international accounting standards.
Smart object technology, sometimes called the Internet of
Things, is having a profound impact on our day-to-day lives.
"Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP" is the first book that
takes a holistic approach to the revolutionary area of IP-based
smart objects. Smart objects are the intersection of networked
embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, ubiquitous and
pervasive computing, mobile telephony and telemetry, and mobile
computer networking. This book consists of three parts, Part I
focuses on the architecture of smart objects networking, Part II
covers the hardware, software, and protocols for smart objects, and
Part III provides case studies on how and where smart objects are
being used today and in the future. The book covers the
fundamentals of IP communication for smart objects, IPv6, and web
services, as well as several newly specified low-power IP standards
such as the IETF 6LoWPAN adaptation layer and the RPL routing
protocol. This book contains essential information not only for the
technical reader but also for policy makers and decision makers in
the area of smart objects both for private IP networks and the
Internet.
The distinguished contributors to this volume have been set the
problem of describing how we know where to move our eyes. There is
a great deal of current interest in the use of eye movement
recordings to investigate various mental processes. The common
theme is that variations in eye movements indicate variations in
the processing of what is being perceived, whether in reading,
driving or scene perception. However, a number of problems of
interpretation are now emerging, and this edited volume sets out to
address these problems. The book investigates controversies
concerning the variations in eye movements associated with reading
ability, concerning the extent to which text is used by the
guidance mechanism while reading, concerning the relationship
between eye movements and the control of other body movements, the
relationship between what is inspected and what is perceived, and
concerning the role of visual control attention in the acquisition
of complex perceptual-motor skills, in addition to the nature of
the guidance mechanism itself.
The contents of this monograph are two-scope. First, it intends to
provide a synthetic but complete account of the thermodynamic and
kinetic foundations on which the reaction path modeling of
geological CO2 sequestration is based. In particular, a great
effort is devoted to review the thermodynamic properties of CO2 and
of the CO2-H2O system and the interactions in the aqueous solution,
the thermodynamic stability of solid product phases (by means of
several stability plots and activity plots), the volumes of
carbonation reactions, and especially the kinetics of
dissolution/precipitation reactions of silicates, oxides,
hydroxides, and carbonates.
When soliton theory, based on water waves, plasmas, fiber optics etc., was developing in the 1960-1970 era it seemed that perhaps KdV (and a few other equations) were really rather special in the set of all interesting partial differential equations. As it turns out, although integrable systems are still special, the mathematical interaction of integrable systems theory with virtually all branches of mathematics (and with many currently developing areas of theoretical physics) illustrates the importance of this area. This book concentrates on developing the theme of the tau function. KdV and KP equations are treated extensively, with material on NLS and AKNS systems, and in following the tau function theme one is led to conformal field theory, strings, and other topics in physics. The extensive list of references contains about 1000 entries.
Volume 6 of Biomembranes covers transmembrane receptors and
channels. A particularly important role for the membrane is that of
passing messages between a cell and its environment. Part I of this
volume covers receptors for hormones and growth factors. Here, as
in so many other areas of cell biology, the application of the
methods of molecular biology have led to the recognition of a
number of families of receptors. Typically, such receptors contain
an extracellular ligand binding domain, a transmembrane domain, and
an intracellular catalytic domain whose activation, as a result of
ligand binding, leads to generation of second messengers within the
cell and stimulation of a range of cytosolic enzymes. An
alternative signaling strategy, exploited in particular in the
nervous system, is to use ion channels to allow controlled movement
of monovalent (Na+, K+) or divalent (Ca2+) cations in or out of the
cell, resulting in changes in membrane potential or alterations in
the intracellular concentration of Ca2+. Part II of this volume is
concerned with these ion channels and with other, often simpler,
ion channel systems whose study can throw light on channel
mechanism.
Multimedia processing demands efficient programming in order to
optimize functionality. Data, image, audio, and video processing,
some or all of which are present in all electronic devices today,
are complex programming environments. Optimized algorithms
(step-by-step directions) are difficult to create but can make all
the difference when developing a new application.

SQL Clearly Explained, Third Edition, provides an in-depth introduction to using SQL (Structured Query Language). Readers will learn not only SQL syntax, but also how SQL works. Although the core of the SQL language remains relatively unchanged, the most recent release of the SQL standard (SQL:2008) includes two sets of extensions: 1) support for object-relational databases and 2) support for XML. As a result, the set of standard SQL commands has been greatly extended and this new edition takes that into account. This new edition includes updated tips and tricks to reflect the current concepts of SQL and XML standards; several new chapters covering object-relational and XML extensions; and an ancillary package that includes case studies, a syllabus, exams and more. This book is intended for working SQL programmers, database administrators, database designers, database analysts, and application system developers as well as those who are developing new features for database management systems who want to know about user needs. This would include anyone working with electronic content in the relational database context but also XML. Web services, etc.
DSP is utilized in just about every electronic system or device. DSP is taking one piece of information be it data, image, video, or audio, most likely compressing, sending, and filtering it to another location within your application to appear in the form of a document, picture or video. Like Smith before it, this book is different to most on the market by following a popular applied approach to this tricky subject, and will be the perfect starting point for engineers who need to get into DSP from the ground floor. This book starts with the absolute basics of this integral process. No experience is expected and with no prior knowledge taken for
granted, a refresher chapter on complex numbers and trigonometry
can be found at the very beginning of the material. Real-world
worked examples, reference designs, and tools - including online
applets that enable readers to visualize key principles - complete
a package that will help engineers who that needs to learn anew or
refresh their memory on this essential technology as they move to
projects that require DSP familiarity. Clear examples and a non-mathematical approach gets you up to speed with DSP Includes an overview of the DSP functions and implementation used in typical DSP-intensive applications, including error correction, CDMA mobile communication, and radar systems
