This book asserts that intangibles create financial transactions,
not vice versa. It offers distinct, reproducible methods of valuing
intangibles in intangible forms, with associated and meaningful
financial values. It also presents new management frameworks in
which all forms of intangibles can be classified, measured,
managed, and reported.

The Essence of Psychotherapy traces the common thread in all
psychotherapy approaches--behavioral, cognitive, psychodynamic,
strategic, and humanistic--and defines this "essence" as a set of
fundamental principles and ultimate objectives that must be
preserved in the face of increased standardization in the field.
While today's therapist is guided by protocols and manuals,
psychotherapy, in practice, remains an art. Nicholas and Janet
Cummings have gathered case studies of master therapists to
illustrate the essential process of successful therapy and to show
that, as an art, it is both teachable and verifiable.
The book will teach readers the basics of performing the tests and
measurements used in radio-frequency systems installation, proof of
performance, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

How do economists understand and measure normal social phenomena? Identifying economic strains in activities such as learning,
group formation, discrimination, and peer dynamics requires
sophisticated data and tools as well as a grasp of prior
scholarship. In this volume leading economists provide an
authoritative summary of social choice economics, from norms and
conventions to the exchange of discrete resources. Including both
theoretical and empirical perspectives, their work provides the
basis for models that can offer new insights in applied economic
analyses.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (S.L.E.), commonly called lupus, is a
chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect virtually any organ of
the body. In lupus, the body's immune system, which normally
functions to protect against foreign invaders, becomes hyperactive,
forming antibodies that attack normal tissues and organs, including
the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, heart, lungs, and blood. Lupus is
characterized by periods of illness, called flares, and periods of
wellness, or remission.

"Contemporary Security Management, 3rd Edition "teaches security
professionals how to operate an efficient security department and
how to integrate smoothly with other groups inside and outside
their own organizations. Fay demonstrates the specifics of security
management: * how to organize, plan, develop and manage a security
operation. * how to identify vulnerabilities. * how to determine
the protective resources required to offset threats. * how to
implement all necessary physical and IT security measures. Security
professionals share the responsibility for mitigating damage,
serving as a resource to an Emergency Tactical Center, assisting
the return of business continuity, and liaising with local response
agencies such as police and fire departments, emergency medical
responders, and emergency warning centers. At the organizational
level, the book addresses budgeting, employee performance,
counseling, hiring and termination, employee theft and other
misconduct, and offers sound advice on building constructive
relationships with organizational peers and company
management.
Web developers and page authors who use JavaServer Pages (JSP) know
that it is much easier and efficient to implement web pages without
reinventing the wheel each time. In order to shave valuable time
from their development schedules, those who work with JSP have
created, debugged, and used custom tags a set of programmable
actions that provide dynamic behavior to static pages paving the
way towards a more common, standard approach to using Java
technology for web development. The biggest boost to this effort
however has only recently arrived in the form of a standard set of
tag libraries, known as the JSTL, which now provides a wide range
of functionality and gives web page authors a much more simplified
approach to implementing dynamic, Java-based web sites.
Geochemistry of Earth Surface Systemsoffers an interdisciplinary
reference for scientists, researchers and upper undergraduate and
graduate levelgeochemistry students a sampling of articles on earth
surface processes from The Treatise on Geochemistry that ismore
affordable than the full Treatise. For professionals, this volume
will provide anoverview of the field as a whole. For students, it
will provide morein-depth introductory content thanis found
inbroad-based geochemistry textbooks. Articleswere selected from

The history of Earth in the Solar System has been unraveled using natural radioactivity. The sources of this radioactivity are the original creation of the elements and the subsequent bombardment of objects, including Earth, in the Solar System by cosmic rays. Both radioactive and radiogenic nuclides are harnessed to arrive at ages of various events and processes on Earth. This collection of chapters from the Treatise on Geochemistry
displays the range of radioactive geochronometric studies that have
been addressed by researchers in various fields of Earth science.
These range from the age of Earth and the Solar System to the
dating of the history of Earth that assists us in defining the
major events in Earth history. In addition, the use of radioactive
geochronometry in describing rates of Earth surface processes,
including the climate history recorded in ocean sediments and the
patterns of circulation of the fluid Earth, has extended the range
of utility of radioactive isotopes as chronometric and tracer
tools.
Thiscollection of 58 articles from therecently-published third
edition of the INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EDUCATION focus on
learning, memory, attention, problem solving, concept formation,
and language. Learning and cognition is the foundation of cognitive
psychology and encompasses many topics including attention, memory,
categorization, etc. Most books in the area either focus on one
subtopic in-depth (e.g. an entire book on memory) or cover the
gamut of subjects in a series of long, technical handbook-like
chapters. This concise reference offers researchers and professors
teaching in the area a new take on the material that is
comprehensive in breadth, but lighter in depth - focusing on main
findings, established facts, and minimizing the amount of space
taken up by large, multi-volume references.
Social and emotional aspects of schooling and the learning
environment can dramatically affect one's attention, understanding,
and memory for learning. This topic has been of increasing interest
in both psychology and education, leading to an entire section
being devoted to it in the third edition of the "International
Encyclopedia of Education."Thirty-three articles from the
Encyclopedia form this concise reference which focuses on such
topics as social and emotional development, anxiety in schools,
effects of mood on motivation, peer learning, and friendship and
social networks.
Smart object technology, sometimes called the Internet of
Things, is having a profound impact on our day-to-day lives.
"Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP" is the first book that
takes a holistic approach to the revolutionary area of IP-based
smart objects. Smart objects are the intersection of networked
embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, ubiquitous and
pervasive computing, mobile telephony and telemetry, and mobile
computer networking. This book consists of three parts, Part I
focuses on the architecture of smart objects networking, Part II
covers the hardware, software, and protocols for smart objects, and
Part III provides case studies on how and where smart objects are
being used today and in the future. The book covers the
fundamentals of IP communication for smart objects, IPv6, and web
services, as well as several newly specified low-power IP standards
such as the IETF 6LoWPAN adaptation layer and the RPL routing
protocol. This book contains essential information not only for the
technical reader but also for policy makers and decision makers in
the area of smart objects both for private IP networks and the
Internet.
This edited textbook will be appropriate for use in advanced
undergraduate and graduate level courses and will serve as a
comprehensive and timely introduction to the field of adolescent
development, providing students with a strong foundation for
understanding the biological, cognitive and psychosocial
transitions occurring during adolescence. While certain normative
biological and cognitive processes are relevant for all youth,
development varies dramatically based on a youth's position in
society. The volume will focus on contextual factors such as
culture, racial identity, socioeconomic position and sociopolitical
and historical events, highlighting the impact such factors have on
the physiological and psychological processes and treating them as
key elements in understanding development during this life stage.
The authors will cover the major theoretical positions (both
historical and contemporary) about adolescence as well as the
relevant research and application. Additionally, modern phenomena -
the ever-increasing influence of pop culture (i.e. Hip Hop), mass
media and technology (i.e., the internet, gaming) and the evolution
of family, education and the church - will be explored in depth.
Each chapter will be written by a known expert in the field.
Since the late 90 s, a renewed interest in the neurobiology of sleep has provided new advancements in the understanding of basic sleep science and the clinical aspects of sleep disorders, with particular interest given to the role of genetics. From laboratory techniques and therapies, groundbreaking research in sleep-wakefulness, new models of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep mechanisms, to bright light therapy for circadian rhythm sleep disorders, this handbook will provide clinicians and researchers with a state-of-the-art reference that summarizes the clinical features and management of the many neurological manifestations of sleep disorders. Practitioners will find invaluable research, information, and
laboratory techniques on such topics as sleep-wake-dependent genes,
the role of sleep duration in mortality and morbidity, and
advancements in the understanding of the neurobiology of sleep
disorders, including narcolepsy-cataplexy, restless legs syndrome,
REM behavior disorders, fatal familiar insomnia, sleep apnea and
heart failure, and nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia, amongst others.
In addition, significant advancements in therapies and drug
protocols are presented.
This volume explores sleep medicine, sleep science, and the sleep disorders that keep one-quarter of the U.S. population from getting this necessary component of normal cognitive functioning and survival. With an emphasis on diagnostic techniques, particularly imaging, this handbook shines newfound attention on the genetic and clinical aspects of sleep medicine. Advances in basic science are explored, including a better understanding of sleep-wakefulness and new models of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep mechanisms. Advancements in the understanding of sleep-wake-dependent genes, gene products, and the role of sleep duration in mortality and morbidity are also presented, along with fascinating noninvasive neuroimaging studies that demonstrate marked changes in function during different sleep states. Clinicians will gain new insights into the diagnosis of sleep
disorders and sleep science. In addition, researchers will have an
invaluable tool that will form a foundation for new approaches into
the ongoing study of sleep medicine.
This volume focuses on the interplay of mind and motion-the bidirectional link between thought and action. In particular, it investigates the implications that this coupling has for decision making. How do we anticipate the consequences of choices and how is the brain able to represent these choice options and their potential consequences? How are different options evaluated and how is a preferred option selected and implemented? This volume addresses these questions not only through an extensive body of knowledge consisting of individual chapters by international experts, but also through integrative group reports that pave a runway into the future. The understanding of how people make decisions is of common interest to experts working in fields such as psychology, economics, movement science, cognitive neuroscience, neuroinformatics, robotics, and sport science. So far, however, it has mainly been advanced in isolation within distinct research disciplines; in contrast, this book results from a deliberate assembly of multidisciplinary teams. It offers intense, focused, and genuine interdisciplinary perspective. It conveys state-of-the-art and outlines future research directions on the hot topic of Mind and Motion (or embodied cognition). It includes contributions from psychologists, neuroscientists, movement scientists, economists, and others.
When soliton theory, based on water waves, plasmas, fiber optics etc., was developing in the 1960-1970 era it seemed that perhaps KdV (and a few other equations) were really rather special in the set of all interesting partial differential equations. As it turns out, although integrable systems are still special, the mathematical interaction of integrable systems theory with virtually all branches of mathematics (and with many currently developing areas of theoretical physics) illustrates the importance of this area. This book concentrates on developing the theme of the tau function. KdV and KP equations are treated extensively, with material on NLS and AKNS systems, and in following the tau function theme one is led to conformal field theory, strings, and other topics in physics. The extensive list of references contains about 1000 entries.
The critically acclaimed serialized review journal for over 50 years, "Advances in Geophysics" is a highly respected publication in the field of geophysics. Since 1952, each volume has been eagerly awaited, frequently consulted, and praised by researchers and reviewers alike. Now in its 52nd volume, it contains much material still relevant today--truly an essential publication for researchers in all fields of geophysics.
The late 1990s mark a turning point for correctional systems in the
United States. For some time, there has been an intensive effort by
corrections to gain the confidence of the public. With increased
urbanization, more timely electronic news media reports, and
renewed emphasis on human rights, corrections has more and more
become the target of a wide variety of attacks. To combat this
backlash, correctional agencies have devised a plan that has worked
very well for law enforcement, a plan best summed up by a single
word: professionalization. This movement has been led by an
articulate and tactful group of correctional officials who have
stressed a new ideology of the correctional officer occupation.
The distinguished contributors to this volume have been set the
problem of describing how we know where to move our eyes. There is
a great deal of current interest in the use of eye movement
recordings to investigate various mental processes. The common
theme is that variations in eye movements indicate variations in
the processing of what is being perceived, whether in reading,
driving or scene perception. However, a number of problems of
interpretation are now emerging, and this edited volume sets out to
address these problems. The book investigates controversies
concerning the variations in eye movements associated with reading
ability, concerning the extent to which text is used by the
guidance mechanism while reading, concerning the relationship
between eye movements and the control of other body movements, the
relationship between what is inspected and what is perceived, and
concerning the role of visual control attention in the acquisition
of complex perceptual-motor skills, in addition to the nature of
the guidance mechanism itself. |
