The International Conference on Mechanical Design and Production
has been established since 1979 by the Department of Mechanical
Design and Production at Cairo University. The conference MDP-6 held in Cairo, 2-4 January 1996, represents
the 6th in the series. Its aim was to highlight the current
advances in mechanical design and production, and to disseminate
the latest developments from academic and industrial institutions
in all related scientific disciplines. This publication includes a selection of papers submitted to the conference and reviewed by members of the scientific committee. The main areas of the papers include: materials processing and characterization constitutive modeling; simulation and analysis of manufacturing processes; numerical analysis of structures; fracture analysis; design and tribology; dynamics, control and robotics; and new trends in industrial and manufacturing engineering.
This volume presents a review of the research in several areas of modern optics written by experts well-known in the international scientific community. The first chapter discusses properties and methods of production and detection of coherent superpositions of macroscopically distinguishable states of light (the so-called Schrodinger cat states). Chapter two deals with the phase-shift method, which originated in the 1930s, for the analysis of potential-scattering problems in atomic and nuclear physics. Recently this approach has been applied to wave propagation in one-dimensional inhomogeneous media. Chapter three is concerned with the statistical properties of dynamic laser speckles that arise from scattering objects with rough surfaces undergoing translation and rotation. A moving phase-screen model is employed, which gives a relatively simple formulation of the theory and a clear picture of the time-varying speckle phenomenon. The fourth chapter presents a review of the more important theoretical and experimental results relating to optics of multilayer systems with randomly rough boundaries. The significant theoretical approaches which make it possible to interpret experimental data involving such systems are described, and relevant methods for optical characterization of systems of this kind are outlined. The last chapter presents an account of a theory of the photon transport through turbid media.
For more than forty years, the equation y (t) = Ay(t) + u(t) in Banach spaces has been used as model for optimal control processes described by partial differential equations, in particular heat and diffusion processes. Many of the outstanding open problems, however, have remained open until recently, and some have never been solved. This volume contains 18 papers selected from 90 presented at the
Fifth International Conference on Biaxial/Multiaxial Fatigue and
Fracture held in Cracow, Poland 8-12 September 1997. The papers in
this book deal with theoretical, computational and experimental
aspects of the multiaxial fatigue and fracture of engineering
materials and structures. The papers are divided into the following
four categories: Most papers in this publication talk about the behaviour of
constructional materials and elements of machines under
non-proportional loading and under variable amplitude and random
loading, which are more realistic load histories met in industrial
practice. Variable amplitude loading under cyclic load with basic
frequency and random loading under load with a continuous band of
frequency is classified here. This book gives a review of the
latest world success and directions of investigations on multiaxial
fatigue and fracture. More and more often publications are results
of the co-operation of researchers from different laboratories and
countries. Seven out of eighteen papers included here were worked
out by international authors teams. This is a symptom of the times,
when science and investigations know no borders.
The series "Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules" aims to cover the
synthetic, as well as chemical, aspects of this expanding field:
the chemistry to and supramolecular chemistry of dendritic or
cascade supermolecular compounds. In Chapter 1 of this volume,
Hawker and Wooley delineate the convergent growth approach to
dendrimers, then relate their three-dimensional architectures to
different block polymers. In Chapter 2, Moors and Vogtle describe
Professor Vogtle's initial cascade molecules via the repetitive
strategy, then expand his original concepts of its application by
others, and lastly delineate the synthesis of a new series of
tosylamide cascades. They also demonstrate the utility of his
original Michael addition/reduction procedure by its application to
differ cores. Chapter 3, composed by Professor Engel, describes
ionic dendrimers which incorporated an internal transition metal
center as well as his work based on ammonium and phosphonium
centers. In Chapter 4, Mathias and Carothers review recent studies
on silicon-based dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers. Chapter 5,
by Kim, describes the preparation and utility of hyperbranched
aromatic polymers. Lastly in Chapter 6, Escamilla reviews the
historical as well as recent examples of ionic and nonionic
bolaamphiphiles.

Beginning as chemical curiosities, carbenes are now solidly
established as reactive intermediates with fascinating and
productive research areas of their own. Five decades of divalent
carbon chemistry have provided us with a vast repertoire of new,
unusual and surprising reactions. Some of those reactions, once
classified as exotic, have become standard methods in organic
synthesis. These highly reactive carbene species have been
harnessed and put to work to achieve difficult synthetic tasks that
other reactive intermediates cannot easily perform.

The second article presents a review of an interesting class of non-linear optical phenomena which have their origin in the dependence of the complex dielectric constant of some media on the light intensity. These phenomena which include self-focusing, self-trapping and self-modulation have found many applications, for example in fiber optics devices, signal processing and computer technology. The first title to be published in the "BRAT Series on Clinical Psychology", this book presents a critical analysis of the theories and empirical evidence to date regarding the origins of phobias and anxiety disorders, and the reasons why more women than men suffer from them. The book moves from a discussion of non-specific temperament to specific risk factors for each anxiety disorder, assuming a hierarchical aetiological model throughout. At each level of analysis, the issue of gender differences is addressed. For example, broad temperamental factors such as traits of negative affectivity and poor emotional regulation are reviewed in terms of their relevance to the group of disorders with which anxiety disorders tend to cluster, such as depression and substance abuse. Biological contributions are covered, along with early life experiences including parenting styles and expectations, and early stressors. The components of anxiety - hypervigilance, threat-laden belief systems and avoidant style - are presented as being common across the anxiety disorders and self-perpetuating. Types of ongoing life experiences that influence the development of one type of anxiety disorder over another are reviewed. Each anxiety disorder is then addressed in detail after considering general principles of fear acquisition and persistence.
During the last few years, many journal articles have shown the usefulness of the Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model for analyzing regional yield trials. AMMI helps agronomists and breeders in several ways: to understand or model complex data sets, especially the interactions; to estimate yields more accurately, even with less data; to make better selections; and to design more efficient yield-trial experiments. This book is the first systematic treatment of these topics, collecting concepts from the scattered literature and also presenting many new results. Although agricultural applications are emphasized here, AMMI is applicable to two-way data tables containing one kind of data, either replicated or not, so AMMI appears in many areas of science and technology. The volume's first seven chapters review the agricultural and statistical principles and the final chapter indicates the difference that AMMI can make for agricultural research and world food supplies. This book will be of great value to agricultural scientists throughout the world, enabling them to learn more from their data and thereby make greater progress.
While the main source of knowledge of human cognition has come from studies of information processing in a single culture, primarily within the U.S. or within certain countries in Europe, much research has also been conducted in other parts of the world. Can the study of cognition across cultures lead us to interesting conclusions about human cognition in general? Surely any general theory of language processing, for example, must be able to explain phenomena observed across cultures and not just within a single one. This book is an attempt to look at this issue of universals in thinking and understanding by providing a compendium of cross cultural investigations in the four major areas of cognitive psychology: (1) memory and knowledge representation, (2) language processing, (3) perception, and (4) reasoning and problem solving. The differences found across cultures are also fascinating and extremely informative. A final chapter provides a summary of the major findings reported in each of these areas. The chapters included in this work were written for those interested in cross-cultural psychology and also those with an interest in cultural anthropology. The authors are well-known in the areas of cross-cultural psychology, cognitive psychology, linguistics, and anthropology. However, the reader need not be an expert in any one of these fields to understand the conclusions and implications of the work reported here.
Anyone involved in the philosophy of science is naturally drawn
into the study of the foundations of probability. Different
interpretations of probability, based on competing philosophical
ideas, lead to different statistical techniques, and frequently to
mutually contradictory consequences. This unique book presents a new interpretation of probability, rooted in the traditional interpretation that was current in the 17th and 18th centuries. Mathematical models are constructed based on this interpretation, and statistical inference and decision theory are applied, including some examples in artificial intelligence, solving the main foundational problems. Nonstandard analysis is extensively developed for the construction of the models and in some of the proofs. Many nonstandard theorems are proved, some of them new, in particular, a representation theorem that asserts that any stochastic process can be approximated by a process defined over a space with equiprobable outcomes.

dictated that sexual dimorphisms may depend upon a single medelian
factor. This could be true for some species but his suggestion
could not take off the ground as gender in Drosophila is determined
by the number of X chromosomes. Technical advances in molecular
biology have revived the initial thinking of Fisher and dictate
that TDF or SRY genes in humans or Tdy in mice are sex determining
genes. The fortuitous findings of XX males and XY female, which are
generally termed sex reversal phenomenon, are quite bewildering
traits that have caused much amazement concerning the pairing
mechanism(s) of the pseudoautosomal regions of human X and Y
chromosomes at meiosis. These findings have opened new avenues to
explore further the genetic basis of sex determination at the
single gene level.
