Topology, for many years, has been one of the most exciting and
influential fields of research in modern mathematics. Although its
origins may be traced back several hundred years, it was Poincare
who "gave topology wings" in a classic series of articles published
around the turn of the century. While the earlier history,
sometimes called the prehistory, is also considered, this volume is
mainly concerned with the more recent history of topology, from
Poincare onwards.
The present volume is the first in the advances in oncobiology series. It is meant to be useful not only to clinical and non-clinical oncologists but also to graduate students and medical students. The individual chapters are presented as self-contained summaries of current knowledge rather than as reviews. The last chapter deals with the subject of chemotherapy.
This book represents the proceedings of the 9th SDL Forum which was
held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, during the week of June 21-25,
1999. The 9th SDL Forum presents papers on the past and future
development of the MSC and SDL languages.The volume presents
information on experience with the use of these languages in

these languages in the software and hardware development process,

ICSAS '99 - The Fourth International Conference on Steel and
Aluminium Structures was a sequel to ICSAS '87 held in Cardiff, UK,
to ICSAS '91 held in Singapore and to ICSAS '95 held in Istanbul,
Turkey. The objective of the conference was to provide a forum for
the discussion of recent findings and developments in the design
and construction of various types of steel and aluminium
structures. The conference was concerned with the analysis, modelling and
design of light-weight or slender structures in which the primary
material is structural steel, stainless or aluminium. The
structural analysis papers presented at the conference cover both
static and dynamic behaviour, instability behaviour and long-term
behaviour under hygrothermal effects. The results of the latest
research and development of some new structural products were also
presented at the conference. A total of 76 papers and 30 posters
were presented at the conference by participants from 36 countries
in all 6 continents.
This fourth volume in the series "Organic Synthesis: Theory and
Applications" is composed of five chapters that span a wide range
of disciplines. Alkaloid chemistry, total synthesis, synthetic
methodology, carbohydrate technology, and spin-trapping agents are
all covered by experts in these fields.
The most exciting development in parallel computer architecture
is the convergence of traditionally disparate approaches on a

The central role of RNA in many cellular processes, in
biotechnology, and as pharmaceutical agents, has created an
interest in experimental methods applied to RNA molecules. This
book provides scientists with a comprehensive collection of
thoroughly tested up-to-date manuals for investigating RNA-protein
complexes "in vitro." The protocols can be performed by researchers
trained in standard molecular biological techniques and require a

The goals of wind wave research are relatively well defined: to be
able to predict the wind wave field and its effect on the
environment. That environment could be natural (beaches, the

This comprehensive reference illustrates optimal preparation
methods in biological electron microscopy compared with common
methodological problems. Not only will the basic methodologies of
transmission electron microscopy like fixation, microtomy, and
microscopy be presented, but the authors also endeavor to
illustrate more specialized techniques such as negative staining,
autoradiography, cytochemistry, immunoelectron microscopy, and
computer-assisted image analysis.
Thin-plated structures are used extensively in building
construction, automobile, aircraft, shipbuilding and other
industries because of a number of favourable factors such as high
strength-weight ratio, development of new materials and processes
and the availability of efficient analytical methods. This class of
structure is made by joining thin plates together at their edges
and they rely for their rigidity and strength upon the tremendous
stiffness and load-carrying capacity of the flat plates from which
they are made. Many of the problems encountered in these structures
arise because of the effects of local buckling. The knowledge of
various facets of this phenomenon has increased dramatically since
the 1960s. Problem areas which were hitherto either too complex for
rigorous analysis or whose subtleties were not fully realized have
in these years been subjected to intensive study. Great advances
have been made in the areas of inelastic buckling. The growth in
use of lightweight strong materials, such as fibre-reinforced
plastics has also been a contributory factor towards the need for
advances in the knowledge of the far post-buckling range. The
conference is a sequel to the international conference organised by
the University of Strathclyde in December 1996 and this
international gathering will provide the opportunity for discussion
of recent developments and trends in design of thin-walled
structures.

Volume 22 of Research in Organizational Behavior continues the tradition of innovation and theoretical development with eight diverse papers. Most of these papers present theory and propositions that make linkages between different levels of analysis.
This volume contains selected papers from the 10th Interdisciplinary Workshop in Informatics and Psychology which had as its theme Cognitive Aspects in Visual Languages and Interfaces. Visual languages in general, visual programming languages in particular, and graphical or visual user interfaces are increasingly regarded as important improvements for the interaction between people and artifacts. Visual and graphical user interfaces have already a history of a number of years in terms of research and development. The focus on visual languages and visual programming languages, however, is more recent. The development of graphical user interfaces was accompanied and reinforced by psychological research but visual languages are still mainly inventions of designers and not designed on the basis of principles derived also from knowledge of psychology or other behavioral sciences. The presentations and discussions at the workshop showed increasing interest in paradigms of visual languages and their psychological foundation. Visual languages and interfaces must be seen as means to support and enhance represention, application and processing knowledge visually. The study of the cognitive aspects in visual languages and interfaces is thus an important part of Human-Computer Interaction as a discipline "concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computer systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them" (definition of HCI in the ACM SIGCHI Curricula for Human-Computer Interaction). This book will stimulate future research in the area of Human-Computer Interaction and Visual Languages.
The near-field earthquake which struck the Hanshin-Awaji area of
Japan before dawn on January 17, 1995, in addition to snatching
away the lives of more than 6,000 people, inflicted horrendous
damage on the region's infrastructure, including the
transportation, communication and lifeline supply network and, of
