Down syndrome (DS) is the most common example of neurogenetic aneuploid disorder leading to mental retardation. In most cases, DS results from an extra copy of chromosome 21 (HSA21) producing deregulated gene expression in brain that gives raise to subnormal intellectual functioning. The topic of this volume is of broad interest for the neuroscience community, because it tackles the concept of neurogenomics, that is, how the genome as a whole contributes to a neurodevelopmental cognitive disorders, such as DS, and thus to the development, structure and function of the nervous system. This volume of Progress in Brain Research discusses comparative
genomics, gene expression atlases of the brain, network genetics,
engineered mouse models and applications to human and mouse
behavioral and cognitive phenotypes. It brings together scientists
of diverse backgrounds, by facilitating the integration of research
directed at different levels of biological organization, and by
highlighting translational research and the application of the
existing scientific knowledge to develop improved DS treatments and
cures.

Pulp and paper production has increased globally and will continue
to increase in the near future. Approximately 155 million tons of
wood pulp is produced worldwide and about 260 million is projected
for 2010. To cope with the increasing demand, an increase in
production and improved environmental performance is needed as the
industry is under constant pressure to reduce environmental
emissions to air and water. This book gives updated information on
environmentally benign approaches for pulp bleaching, which can
help solve the problems associated with conventional bleaching
technologies.
Neuroendocrinology, the discipline concerned with how the
nervous system controls hormonal secretion and how hormones control
the brain, is pivotal to physiology and medicine.
Neuroendocrinology has disclosed and underpins fundamental
physiological, molecular biological and genetic principles such as
the regulation of gene transcription and translation, the
mechanisms of chemical neurotransmission and intracellular and
systemic feedback control systems. Reproduction, growth, stress,
aggression, metabolism, birth, feeding and drinking and blood
pressure are some of the bodily functions that are triggered and/or
controlled by neuroendocrine systems. In turn, neuroendocrine
dysfunction due to genetic or other deficits can lead, for example,
to infertility, impotence, precocious or delayed puberty, defective
or excessive growth, obesity and anorexia, Cushing s Syndrome,
hypertension or thyroid disorders. These as well as neuroendocrine
tumors are some of the themes covered in the 36 chapters of the
Handbook. Drafted by internationally acknowledged experts in the
field, the Handbook chapters feature detailed up-to-date
bibliographies as well as "how do we know?" call out sections that
highlight the experimental or technical foundations for major
concepts, principles, or methodological advances in each area.
Aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral
fellows and faculty in neuroscience, medicine, endocrinology,
psychiatry, psychology and cognate disciplines, the "Handbook of
Neuroendocrinology" satisfies an unmet need that will prove useful
at the laboratory bench as well as in the office.
Modern embedded systems are used for connected, media-rich, and highly integrated handheld devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and MP3 players. All of these embedded systems require networking, graphic user interfaces, and integration with PCs, as opposed to traditional embedded processors that can perform only limited functions for industrial applications. While most books focus on these controllers, "Modern Embedded Computing" provides a thorough understanding of the platform architecture of modern embedded computing systems that drive mobile devices. The book offers a comprehensive view of developing a framework
for embedded systems-on-chips. Examples feature the Intel Atom
processor, which is used in high-end mobile devices such as
e-readers, Internet-enabled TVs, tablets, and net books. Beginning
with a discussion of embedded platform architecture and Intel
Atom-specific architecture, modular chapters cover system boot-up,
operating systems, power optimization, graphics and multi-media,
connectivity, and platform tuning. Companion lab materials
compliment the chapters, offering hands-on embedded design
experience.

What is the value of an education? Volume 4 of the Handbooks in
the Economics of Education combines recent data with new
methodologies to examine this and related questions from diverse
perspectives. School choice and school competition, educator
incentives, the college premium, and other considerations help make
sense of the investments and returns associated with education.
Volume editors Eric A. Hanushek (Stanford), Stephen Machin
(University College London) and Ludger Woessmann (Ifo Institute for
Economic Research, Munich) draw clear lines between newly emerging
research on the economics of education and prior work. In
conjunction with Volume 3, they measure our current understanding
of educational acquisition and its economic and social
effects.
Rock iguanas of the West Indies are considered to be the most endangered group of lizards in the world. They are a flagship species in the Caribbean and on most islands are the largest native land animals. Unfortunately, human encroachment and introduced animals have brought this species to the brink of extinction. "Cyclura: Natural History, Husbandry, and Conservation of the West Indian Iguanas" is the first book to combine the natural history and captive husbandry of these remarkable reptiles, while at the same time outlining the problems researchers and conservationists are battling to save these beautiful, iconic animals of the Caribbean islands. Authors Jeffrey Lemm and Allison Alberts have been studying West
Indian iguanas for nearly 20 years in the wild and in captivity;
their experiences with wild iguanas and their exquisite photos of
these charismatic lizards in the wild make this book a must-have
for reptile researchers, academics and enthusiasts, as well as
anyone interested in nature and conservation.
Choice, Behavioural Economics and Addiction is about the theory,
data, and applied implications of choice-based models of substance
use and addiction. The distinction between substance use and
addiction is important, because many individuals use substances but
are not also addicted to them. The behavioural economic perspective
has made contributions to the analysis of both of these phenomena
and, while the major focus of the book is on theories of addiction,
it is necessary also to consider the behavioural economic account
of substance use in order to place the theories in their proper
context and provide full coverage of the contribution of
behavioural economics to this field of study.
Starting Electronics is unrivalled as a highly practical introduction for technicians, non-electronic engineers, software engineers, students, and hobbyists. Keith Brindley introduces readers to the functions of the main component types, their uses, and the basic principles of building and designing electronic circuits. Breadboard layouts make this very much a ready-to-run book for the experimenter, and the use of readily available, inexpensive components makes this practical exploration of electronics easily accessible to all levels of engineer and hobbyist. Other books tell readers what to do, but sometimes fail to explain why - Brindley gives readers hands-on confidence in addition to real scientific knowledge, and insight into the principles as well as the practice. All written explanations and steps are supplemented with numerous photos, charts, tables and graphs. Concepts and practical aspects are explained thoroughly with mathematical formulae and technical schematic drawings. Each chapter introduces a concept or tool, explains the basic
theory, and provides clear instructions for a simple experiment to
apply the concept or tool, with quiz sections and answers, at the
end of each chapter. New chapters on multimeters and soldering will
be added, covering the fundamentals and experiments, with a basic
parts list and an expanded and updated buyer s guide.

In this book, the general theory of submanifolds in a multidimensional projective space is constructed. The topics dealt with include osculating spaces and fundamental forms of different orders, asymptotic and conjugate lines, submanifolds on the Grassmannians, different aspects of the normalization problems for submanifolds (with special emphasis given to a connection in the normal bundle) and the problem of algebraizability for different kinds of submanifolds, the geometry of hypersurfaces and hyperbands, etc. A series of special types of submanifolds with special projective structures are studied: submanifolds carrying a net of conjugate lines (in particular, conjugate systems), tangentially degenerate submanifolds, submanifolds with asymptotic and conjugate distributions etc. The method of moving frames and the apparatus of exterior differential forms are systematically used in the book and the results presented can be applied to the problems dealing with the linear subspaces or their generalizations. Graduate students majoring in differential geometry will find this monograph of great interest, as will researchers in differential and algebraic geometry, complex analysis and theory of several complex variables. |
