Dictionary of Plant Lore (Hardcover): D.C. Watts Dictionary of Plant Lore (Hardcover)
D.C. Watts
R1,475 Discovery Miles 14 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Knowledge of plant names can give insight into largely forgotten beliefs. For example, the common red poppy is known as "Blind Man" due to an old superstitious belief that if the poppy were put to the eyes it would cause blindness. Many plant names derived from superstition, folk lore, or primal beliefs. Other names are purely descriptive and can serve to explain the meaning of the botanical name. For example, Beauty-Berry is the name given to the American shrub that belongs to the genus Callicarpa. Callicarpa is Greek for beautiful fruit. Still other names come from literary sources providing rich detail of the transmission of words through the ages.
Conceived as part of the author's wider interest in plant and tree lore and ethnobotanical studies, this fully revised edition of "Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names and Their Origins" contains over 30,000 vernacular and literary English names of plants. Wild and cultivated plants alike are identified by the botanical name. Further detail provides a brief account of the meaning of the name and detailed commentary on common usage.

* Includes color images
* Inclusive of all Latin terms with vernacular derivatives
* The most comprehensive guide for plant scientists, linguists, botanists, and historians

Network Routing - Algorithms, Protocols, and Architectures (Hardcover): Network Routing - Algorithms, Protocols, and Architectures (Hardcover)
R2,003 Discovery Miles 20 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Network routing can be broadly categorized into Internet routing, PSTN routing, and telecommunication transport network routing. This book systematically considers these routing paradigms, as well as their interoperability. The authors discuss how algorithms, protocols, analysis, and operational deployment impact these approaches. A unique feature of the book is consideration of both macro-state and micro-state in routing; that is, how routing is accomplished at the level of networks and how routers or switches are designed to enable efficient routing.
In reading this book, one will learn about 1) the evolution of network routing, 2) the role of IP and E.164 addressing in routing, 3) the impact on router and switching architectures and their design, 4) deployment of network routing protocols, 5) the role of traffic engineering in routing, and 6) lessons learned from implementation and operational experience. This book explores the strengths and weaknesses that should be considered during deployment of future routing schemes as well as actual implementation of these schemes. It allows the reader to understand how different routing strategies work and are employed and the connection between them. This is accomplished in part by the authors' use of numerous real-world examples to bring the material alive.
. Bridges the gap between theory and practice in network routing, including the fine points of implementation and operational experience
. Routing in a multitude of technologies discussed in practical detail, including, IP/MPLS, PSTN, and optical networking
. Routing protocols such as OSPF, IS-IS, BGP presented in detail
. A detailed coverage of various router and switch architectures

. Accessible to a wide audience due to its vendor-neutral approach
. CD-ROM with bonus chapters on advanced topics

X3D - Extensible 3D Graphics for Web Authors (Paperback): Don Brutzman, Leonard Daly X3D - Extensible 3D Graphics for Web Authors (Paperback)
Don Brutzman, Leonard Daly
R1,863 Discovery Miles 18 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the early days of the Web a need was recognized for a language to display 3D objects through a browser. An HTML-like language, VRML, was proposed in 1994 and became the standard for describing interactive 3D objects and worlds on the Web. 3D Web courses were started, several best-selling books were published, and VRML continues to be used today. However VRML, because it was based on HTML, is a stodgy language that is not easy to incorporate with other applications and has been difficult to add features to. Meanwhile, applications for interactive 3D graphics have been exploding in areas such as medicine, science, industry, and entertainment. There is a strong need for a set of modern Web-based technologies, applied within a standard extensible framework, to enable a new generation of modeling & simulation applications to emerge, develop, and interoperate. X3D is the next generation open standard for 3D on the web. It is the result of several years of development by the Web 3D Consortium's X3D Task Group. Instead of a large monolithic specification (like VRML), which requires full adoption for compliance, X3D is a component-based architecture that can support applications ranging from a simple non-interactive animation to the latest streaming or rendering applications. X3D replaces VRML, but also provides compatibility with existing VRML content and browsers. Don Brutzman organized the first symposium on VRML and is playing a similar role with X3D; he is a founding member of the consortium. Len Daly is a professional member of the consortium and both Len and Don have been involved with the development of the standard from the start.
* The first book on the new way to present interactive 3D content over the Web, written by two of the designers of the standard
* Plentiful illustrations and screen shots in the full color text
* Companion website with extensive content, including the X3D specification, sample code and applications, content creation tools, and demos of compatible Web browsers

Deploying IP and MPLS QoS for Multiservice Networks - Theory and Practice (Hardcover): John William Evans, Clarence Filsfils Deploying IP and MPLS QoS for Multiservice Networks - Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
John William Evans, Clarence Filsfils
R1,490 Discovery Miles 14 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

QoS, short for "quality of service," is one of the most important goals a network designer or administrator will have. Ensuring that the network runs at optimal precision with data remaining accurate, traveling fast, and to the correct user are the main objectives of QoS. The various media that fly across the network including voice, video, and data have different idiosyncrasies that try the dimensions of the network. This malleable network architecture poses an always moving potential problem for the network professional.
The authors have provided a comprehensive treatise on this subject. They have included topics such as traffic engineering, capacity planning, and admission control. This book provides real world case studies of QoS in multiservice networks. These case studies remove the mystery behind QoS by illustrating the how, what, and why of implementing QoS within networks. Readers will be able to learn from the successes and failures of these actual working designs and configurations.
*Helps readers understand concepts of IP QoS by presenting clear descriptions of QoS components, architectures, and protocols
*Directs readers in the design and deployment of IP QoS networks through fully explained examples of actual working designs
*Contains real life case studies which focus on implementation

Integrating the Neurobiology of Schizophrenia, Volume 78 (Hardcover, 78th edition): Anissa Abi-Dargham, Olivier Guillin Integrating the Neurobiology of Schizophrenia, Volume 78 (Hardcover, 78th edition)
Anissa Abi-Dargham, Olivier Guillin
R4,777 Discovery Miles 47 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the role that dopamine plays in schizophrenia, examining its role in not only the symptoms of the disease but also in its treatment. It also reviews all neurotransmitters that have been implicated in schizophrenia, exploring the genetic data, clinical data implicating the transmitter, and the preclinical data exploring how a transmitter may interact with dopamine and contribute to the dopaminergic phenotype observed in the illness. This book will serve as an educational tool for instructors, a guide for clinicians, and be of interest to researchers. It is a good reference for researchers specialized in one particular area and interested in learning about other areas of pathology in schizophrenia and how they may all feed into each other. The book concludes with an overall integrative model assembling as many of these elements as possible.

Value at Risk and Bank Capital Management - Risk Adjusted Performances, Capital Management and Capital Allocation Decision... Value at Risk and Bank Capital Management - Risk Adjusted Performances, Capital Management and Capital Allocation Decision Making (Hardcover)
Francesco Saita
R1,947 Discovery Miles 19 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While the highly technical measurement techniques and methodologies of Value at Risk have attracted huge interest, much less attention has been focused on how Value at Risk and the risk-adjusted performance measures such as RAROC or economic profit/EVA . can be effectively used to improve a bank s decision making processes. Academic books are typically concerned primarily with measurement techniques, and devote only a small section to describing the applications, usually without discussing the problems that changing organizational processes in banks may have on business units behaviour. Practitioners books are often based on a single experience, presenting the approach that has been pursued by a single bank, but often do not adequately evaluate that approach. In actual practice, the choice of how to use Value at Risk and risk-adjusted performance measures has no single optimal solution, but requires effective decision making that can identify the solution that is consistent with the bank s style of management and coordination mechanisms, and often with characteristics of individual business units as well. In this book, Francesco Saita of Bocconi University argues that even though risk measurement techniques have greatly improved in recent years for market, credit and now also operational risk, capital management and capital allocation decisions are far from becoming purely technical and mechanical. On one hand, decisions about capital management must consider handling different capital constraints (e.g. regulatory vs. economic capital ) and face remarkable difficulties in providing a measure of aggregated ] Value at Risk (i.e. a measure that considers the overall value at risk of the bank after diversification across risk types). On the other hand, the aim of using capital more efficiently through capital allocation cannot be achieved only through a sort of centralized asset allocation process, but rather by designing a Value at Risk limit system and a risk-adjusted performance measurement system that are designed to provide the right incentives to individual business units. This connection between sophisticated and cutting edge risk measurement techniques and practical bank decision making about capital management and capital allocation make this book unique and provide readers with a depth of academic and theoretical expertise combined with practical and real-world understanding of bank structure, organizational constraints, and decisionmaking processes.
*Contains concise, expert analysis of the latest technical VaR measures but without the highly mathematical component of other books
*Discusses practical applications of these measures in the real world of banking, focusing on effective decision making for capital management and allocation
*Author is based at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy, one of the foremost institutions for banking in Europe"

IPv6 Core Protocols Implementation (Hardcover): Qing Li, Tatuya Jinmei, Keiichi Shima IPv6 Core Protocols Implementation (Hardcover)
Qing Li, Tatuya Jinmei, Keiichi Shima
R2,026 Discovery Miles 20 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

IPv6 was introduced in 1994 and has been in development at the IETF for over 10 years. It has now reached the deployment stage. KAME, the de-facto open-source reference implementation of the IPv6 standards, played a significant role in the acceptance and the adoption of the IPv6 technology. The adoption of KAME by key companies in a wide spectrum of commercial products is a testimonial to the success of the KAME project, which concluded not long ago.

This book is the first and the only one of its kind, which reveals all of the details of the KAME IPv6 protocol stack, explaining exactly what every line of code does and why it was designed that way. Through the dissection of both the code and its design, the authors illustrate how IPv6 and its related protocols have been interpreted and implemented from the specifications. This reference will demystify those ambiguous areas in the standards, which are open to interpretation and problematic in deployment, and presents solutions offered by KAME in dealing with these implementation challenges.
Covering a snapshot version of KAME dated April 2003 based on FreeBSD 4.8Extensive line-by-line code listings with meticulous explanation of their rationale and use for the KAME snapshot implementation, which is generally applicable to most recent versions of the KAME IPv6 stack including those in recent releases of BSD variantsNumerous diagrams and illustrations help in visualizing the implementation In-depth discussion of the standards provides intrinsic understanding of the specifications

GERD - Reflux to Esophageal Adenocarcinoma (Hardcover, New): Parakrama T. Chandrasoma, Tom R. Demeester GERD - Reflux to Esophageal Adenocarcinoma (Hardcover, New)
Parakrama T. Chandrasoma, Tom R. Demeester
R2,669 Discovery Miles 26 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is one of the most common maladies of mankind. Approximately 40% of the adult population of the USA suffers from significant heartburn and the numerous antacids advertised incessantly on national television represents a $8 billion per year drug market. The ability to control acid secretion with the increasingly effective acid-suppressive agents such as the H2 blockers ("pepcid, zantac") and proton pump inhibitors ("nexium, prevacid") has given physicians an excellent method of treating the symptoms of acid reflux.
Unfortunately, this has not eradicated reflux disease. It has just changed its nature. While heartburn, ulceration and strictures have become rare, reflux-induced adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is becoming increasingly common. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia is now the most rapidly increasing cancer type in the Western world.
The increasing incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma has created an enormous interest and stimulus for research in this area. GERD brings together a vast amount of disparate literature and presents the entire pathogenesis of reflux disease in one place. In addition to providing a new concept of how gastroesophageal reflux causes cellular changes in the esophagus, GERD also offers a complete solution to a problem that has confused physicians for over a century. Both clinical and pathological information about reflux disease and its treatment are presented. GERD is meant to be used as a comprehensive reference for gastroenterologists, esophageal surgeons, and pathologists alike.
*Outlines how gastroesophageal reflux causes cellular changes in the esophagus
*Brings together the pathogenesis of the disease in one source and applies it toward clinical treatment
*Tom DeMeester is THE leading international expert on reflux disease; Parakrama Chandrasoma is one of the leading pathologists in the area
*Book contains approximately 350 illustrations
*Ancillary web site features color illustrations: www.chandrasoma.com

Customizable Embedded Processors, Volume . - Design Technologies and Applications (Hardcover): Paolo Ienne, Rainer Leupers Customizable Embedded Processors, Volume . - Design Technologies and Applications (Hardcover)
Paolo Ienne, Rainer Leupers
R1,701 Discovery Miles 17 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Customizable processors have been described as the next natural step in the evolution of the microprocessor business: a step in the life of a new technology where top performance alone is no longer sufficient to guarantee market success. Other factors become fundamental, such as time to market, convenience, energy efficiency, and ease of customization.
This book is the first to explore comprehensively one of the most fundamental trends which emerged in the last decade: to treat processors not as rigid, fixed entities, which designers include "as is" in their products; but rather, to build sound methodologies to tailor-fit processors to the specific needs of such products. This book addresses the goal of maintaining a very large family of processors, with a wide range of features, at a cost comparable to that of maintaining a single processor.
- First book to present comprehensively the major ASIP design methodologies and tools without any particular bias.
- Written by most of the pioneers and top international experts of this young domain.
- Unique mix of management perspective, technical detail, research outlook, and practical implementation.
