Freud Evaluated - The Completed Arc (Hardcover): Malcolm Macmillan Freud Evaluated - The Completed Arc (Hardcover)
Malcolm Macmillan
R3,480 Discovery Miles 34 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is an historically based critical evaluation of Freud's personality theory. In it the observations Freud made are described and the theoretical ideas he put forward for explaining them are set out. The adequacy of Freud's explanations are judged against the logical and scientific standards of Freud's own time. The historical perspective will give the reader a sound basis on which to make a judgement about psycho-analysis as a method of investigation and a theory of personality as well as a sense of what Freud was about from Freud's own standpoint. Freud's endeavour is sited in the psychological and psychiatric context of the time, a period not previously given the critical attention it warrants. All of Freud's important assumptions and characteristic modes of thought are to be found in this formative period. The placement also brings out more clearly the basis of a number of the unresolved problems of contemporary psycho-analytic theory, such as the place of affect and the instinctual drives, the role of the ego, and the basis of treatment.

Free Radical Damage and its Control, Volume 28 (Hardcover): C.A. Rice-Evans, R. H Burdon Free Radical Damage and its Control, Volume 28 (Hardcover)
C.A. Rice-Evans, R. H Burdon
R5,079 Discovery Miles 50 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides a comprehensive treatise on the chemical and biochemical consequences of damaging free radical reactions, the implications for the pathogenesis of disease and how this might be controlled endogenously and by radical scavenging drugs. Oxidative stress may be influenced by exogenous agents of oxidative stress, radiation, trauma, drug activation, oxygen excess, or by exogenous oxidative stress which is associated with many pathological states including chronic inflammatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, injury to the central nervous system, and connective tissue damage. This and many other such aspects are presented clearly and in depth.

The development of antioxidant drugs depends on the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the generation of excessive free radicals "in vivo," the factors controlling their release and the site of their action. This excellent volume presents an up-to-date account of the current state of knowledge in these areas.

Vision and Motor Control, Volume 85 (Hardcover): L. Proteau, D. Elliott Vision and Motor Control, Volume 85 (Hardcover)
L. Proteau, D. Elliott
R2,868 Discovery Miles 28 680 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since the classic studies of Woodworth (1899), the role of
vision in the control of movement has been an important
research topic in experimental psychology. While many early
studies were concerned with the relative importance of vision
and kinesthesis and/or the time it takes to use visual
information, recent theoretical and technical developments
have stimulated scientists to ask questions about how
different sources of visual information contribute to motor
control in different contexts.

In this volume, articles are
presented that provide a broad coverage of the current
research and theory on vision and human motor learning and
control. Many of the contributors are colleagues that have met
over the years at the meetings and conferences concerned with
human movement. They represent a wide range of affiliation and
background including kinesiology, physical education,
neurophysiology, cognitive psychology and neuropsychology.
Thus the topic of vision and motor control is addressed from a
number of different perspectives. In general, each author sets
an empirical and theoretical framework for their topic, and
then discusses current work from their own laboratory, and how
it fits into the larger context. A synthesis chapter at the end of the volume identifies commonalities in the work and suggests directions for future experimentation.

R4,662 Discovery Miles 46 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Rock Mass Classifications - A Practical Approach in Civil Engineering" was written in response to the many unanswered questions regarding this subject. Questions such as - Is Classification reasonably reliable? Can it be successful in crisis management of geohazards? Can a single Classification system be general for all rock structures? Is Classification a scientific approach? Laborious field research was undertaken in the Himalayan mountains by a team of scientists from the Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI), University of Roorkee (UOR), Central Soil and Material Research Station (CSMRS), U.P. Irrigation Research Institute (UPIRI), and Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) to answer these questions. The results obtained from the research work were systematically compiled to produce this book which bears particular relevance to civil, mining and petroleum engineers and geologists.

Time, Internal Clocks and Movement, Volume 115 (Hardcover, Reprinted from ed.): M.A. Pastor, J. Artieda Time, Internal Clocks and Movement, Volume 115 (Hardcover, Reprinted from ed.)
M.A. Pastor, J. Artieda
R4,464 Discovery Miles 44 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Interest in the concept of time has a long history and has been a topic of study for a wide range of investigators. No change can take place without specification of time. While philosophers and physicists have been intrigued by the concept of subjective perception of time and its relationship to real time, natural scientists have been concerned mainly with investigating time as a factor in understanding the behaviour of animals from the migratory habits of birds to the periodical breeding cycles. The immense bulk of temporal perception studies, the variety of approaches, methods of measurement and even terminology has led to a difficulty in reaching a global interpretation of the results.

This book aims to give an integrative approach of time sense and to focus the analysis on temporal factors in the processing of movement, trying to link temporal perception studies in the final common pathway, that is motion. To give some clues of human brain integrative processes at higher levels. And, finally, to clarify the neurophysiological substrate of these operations.

Optics - Principles and Applications (Hardcover): Kailash K. Sharma Optics - Principles and Applications (Hardcover)
Kailash K. Sharma
R3,211 Discovery Miles 32 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Optical technology is essential to communications and medical technology. K.K. Sharma has written a comprehensive volume on optics. Beginning with introductory ideas and equations, Sharma takes the reader through the world of optics detailing problems encountered, advanced subjects, and actual applications. Elegantly written, this book rigorously examines optics with over 300 illustrations and several problems in each chapter. The book begins with light propagation in anisotropic media considered much later in most books. Sharma has started with this because it provides a more general and beautiful example of light propagation.
Nearly one third of the book deals with applications of optics. This simple idea of merging the sometimes overwhelming and dry subject of optics with real world applications will create better future engineers. It will make 'optics' jump off the page for readers and they will see it take shape in the world around them. In presenting optics practically, as well as theoretically, readers will come away not only with a complete knowledge base but a context in which to place it.

Intelligence, Mind, and Reasoning, Volume 106 - Structure and Development (Hardcover): A. Demetriou, A. Efklides Intelligence, Mind, and Reasoning, Volume 106 - Structure and Development (Hardcover)
A. Demetriou, A. Efklides
R2,091 Discovery Miles 20 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume aims to contribute to the integration of three traditions that have remained separate in psychology. Specifically, the developmental, the psychometric, and the cognitive tradition. In order to achieve this aim, the text deals with these three aspects of human knowing that have been the focus of one or more of the three traditions for many years. Answers are provided to questions such as the following: What is common to intelligence, mind, and reasoning? What is specific to each of these three aspects of human knowing? How does each of them affect the functioning and development of the other?

The chapters are organized into two parts. Part I focuses on intelligence and mind and has reasoning at the background. The papers in this part present new theories and methods that systematically attempt to bridge psychometric theories of intelligence with theories of cognitive development or information processing theories. Part II focuses on mind and reasoning and has intelligence at the background. The papers in this part develop models of reasoning and attempt to show how reasoning interacts with mind and intelligence. Two discussion chapters are also included. These highlight the convergences and the divergences of the various traditions as represented in the book.

Membranes and Cell Signaling, Volume 7 (Hardcover): Edward Bittar Membranes and Cell Signaling, Volume 7 (Hardcover)
Edward Bittar
R3,026 Discovery Miles 30 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It should not come as too much of a surprise that biological membranes are considerably more complex than lipid bilayers. This has been made quite clear by the fluid-mosaic model which considers the cell membrane as a two-dimensional solution of a mosaic of integral membrane proteins and glycoproteins firmly embedded in a fluid lipid bilayer matrix. Such a model has several virtues, chief among which is that it allows membrane components to diffuse in the plane of the membrane and orient asymmetrically across the membrane. The model is also remarkable since it provokes the right sort of questions. Two such examples are: Does membrane fluidity influence enzyme activity? Does cholesterol regulate fluidity? However, it does not go far enough. As it turns out, there is now another version of this model, the so-called post-fluid mosaic model which incorporates two concepts, namely the existence in the membrane of discrete domains in which specific lipid-lipid, lipid-protein and protein-protein interactions occur and ordered regions that are in motion but remain separate from less ordered regions. We must admit that both are intriguing problems and of importance in guiding our thinking as to what the next model might be.
We have chosen not to include the subject of membrane transport in the present volume. This obviously represents a break with convention. However, the intention is to have the topic covered subsequent volumes relating to organ systems. It would be right to regard this as an attempt to strengthen the integrated approach to the teaching of medicine.
