Recent scholarship has shown that modern postural yoga is the outcome of a complex process of transcultural exchange and syncretism. This book doubles down on those claims and digs even deeper, looking to uncover the disparate but entangled roots of modern yoga practice. Anya Foxen shows that some of what we call yoga, especially in North America and Europe, is genealogically only slightly related to pre-modern Indian yoga traditions. Rather, it is equally, if not more so, grounded in Hellenistic theories of the subtle body, Western esotericism and magic, pre-modern European medicine, and late-nineteenth-century women's wellness programs. The book begins by examining concepts arising out of Greek philosophy and religion, including Pythagoreanism, Stoicism, Neo-Platonism, Galenic medicine, theurgy, and other cultural currents that have traditionally been categorized as "Western esotericism," as well as the more recent examples which scholars of American traditions have labeled "metaphysical religion." Marshaling these under the umbrella category of "harmonialism," Foxen argues that they represent a history of practices that were gradually subsumed into the language of yoga. Orientalism and gender become important categories of analysis as this narrative moves into the nineteenth century. Women considerably outnumber men in all studies of yoga except those conducted in India, and modern anglophone yoga exhibits important continuities with women's physical culture, feminist reform, and white women's engagement with Orientalism. Foxen's study allows us to recontextualize the peculiarities of American yoga-its focus on aesthetic representation, its privileging of bodily posture and unsystematic incorporation of breathwork, and above all its overwhelmingly white female demographic. In this context it addresses the ongoing conversation about cultural appropriation within the yoga community.
Reiki is a gentle yet powerful, hands-on energy healing method from Japan that's been gaining in popularity over the last century-not only with bodyworkers and massage therapists in the West but also with medical professionals who can attest to its healing power. Born from the author's decades of experience with Reiki healing and her own methods, The Art of Psychic Reiki provides everything you need to know about this healing art, including the critical psychic development and empathy training that prepares healers to go out and do the work they were meant to do. If you're drawn to the healing art of Reiki, you might be a highly sensitive person, with high levels of empathy, intuition, and latent psychic abilities (a combination of intuition and inner knowing, plus the ability to connect with higher wisdom). And since Reiki is a form of energy healing, many new practitioners may experience what's called a psychic opening as they learn or practice. For this reason, it's important that every Reiki practitioner master the ability to navigate their empathic and psychic sensitivities while engaged in this work-and this book can help. Whether you're new to Reiki or you're a practitioner seeking to deepen your knowledge and enhance your skills, with this guide you'll learn how to use Reiki to heal yourself and others, cultivate and trust your natural intuition, develop your empathic and psychic abilities, work with your spirit guides, and ground and protect yourself as a practitioner of this sacred healing art.

Osho's teachings defy categorisation, covering everything from the individual quest for meaning to the most urgent social and political issues facing society today. His books are not written but are transcribed from audio and video recordings of extemporaneous talks given to international audiences over a period of 35 years. Osho has been described by "The Sunday Times" in London as one of the '1000 Makers of the 20th Century' and by American author Tom Robbins as 'the most dangerous man since Jesus Christ'.
The principles and practices of Tantra are revealed by one of the greatest spiritual teachers of the twentieth century in The Book of Secrets: 112 Meditations to Discover the Mystery Within. In this comprehensive and practical guide, the secrets of the ancient science of Tantra become available to a contemporary audience. Confined to small, hidden mystery schools for centuries, and often misunderstood and misinterpreted today. Tantra is not just a collection of techniques to enhance sexual experience. As Osho shows in these pages, it is a complete science of self-realization, based on the cumulative wisdom of centuries of exploration into the meaning of life and consciousness. Tantra―the very word means “technique”―is a set of powerful, transformative tools that can be used to bring new meaning and joy to every aspect of our daily lives. Osho challenges readers to examine and break free of the conditioned belief systems and prejudices that limit their capacity to enjoy life in all its richness. He has been described by the Sunday Times of London as one of the “1000 Makers of the 20th Century” and by Sunday Mid-Day (India) as one of the ten people―along with Gandhi, Nehru, and Buddha―who have changed the destiny of India. Since his death in 1990, the influence of his teachings continues to expand, reaching seekers of all ages in virtually every country of the world.

If there is an overriding philosophy that Ora Nadrich ascribes to, it is this: you can help yourself solve your own problems, you can do it daily, and the process doesn t need to be complex. Flying in the face of the often oblique language of the self help movement, Ora, a certified life coach with a thriving practice in Los Angeles, prides herself on not only having devised a method of self discovery and mindful practice that is simple, direct and applicable to everyone, but is also easy to understand and put to use. And, like brushing your teeth, can be done daily and take about as much time. Simplicity is her mantra.
This book is an essential guide on the often perilous path to self-transformation. B. Simhananda invites the reader to explore one's inherent potential, through an exceptional and groundbreaking study of Gampopa's famous twelfth-century Buddhist classical works. Let your mind be inspired and your soul stirred through this impeccably written masterpiece. Divided in two sections, one part presents the author's modern liberal rendition of Gampopa's Root Text, and the other, in complete alignment with Tibetan tradition, remains the author's own contemporary commentaries on the mentioned work, helping the reader to extend his comprehension of the various topics. Readers of Buddhist literature and philosophy will appreciate "Gampopa's Precious Garland" in a new mode of understanding and in today's contemporary style of written expression. Once again, B. Simhananda offers us, in a modernized way, an interpretation of his profound understanding of Gampopa's teachings.
