Selwyn Francis Edge, invariably known simply as 'SF', was a highly significant pioneer of motoring in Britain. When, in 1902, he drove a Napier to victory in the Gordon Bennett Cup, a mighty event on public roads between Paris in France and Innsbruck in Austria, he initiated serious British endeavour in motor racing. He was deeply involved in the birth of Brooklands, setting a 24-hour solo driving record there when the circuit opened in 1907. As a towering industry figure most closely associated with Napier and AC Cars, he played an important role in the growth of car manufacture in Britain. In the words of 'Bentley Boy' S.C.H. 'Sammy' Davis, 'His keen grey eyes, the bushy eyebrows and the hawk-like face... made him a notable figure in any assembly.' This biography uncovers the life of an extraordinary man whose achievements deserve to be far more widely recognised.

This book presents, in large-format images, Simon's unique virtually designed racing machines and tells the story of international racer Vic Cooper, who time-travels under the name 'Vic13' and later 'Mean13' to the past and the future to compete in a wide variety of motor races. In the storied history of NASCAR auto racing American race car driver Jimmie Johnson is one of the most accomplished and decorated professional athletes of his era and is the only race car driver ever to be named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. His historic seven NASCAR Cup Series championship titles are shared with NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the most all-time. One More Lap, Jimmie Johnson and The #48 memorializes the record-breaking career of this extraordinary athlete who began racing motocross at five years old in his hometown of El Cajon, California with a laser focus on becoming a racing champion. After switching from dirt bikes to off-road vehicles, Johnson quickly graduated into pavement racing, receiving mentorship from another NASCAR legend, Jeff Gordon. By 2002, Johnson was competing in NASCAR s Sprint Cup Series as part of the fabled Hendrick Motorsports racing team and began to capture the imagination of racing fans across the globe. Over the course of his career, Johnson recorded 83 wins, 232 top-five, 374 top-10 finishes and 36 pole positions en route to seven championships, including five in a row from 2006-2010. Johnson ranks sixth on the NASCAR all-time wins list and is a two-time Daytona 500 winner. Johnson s life changed in 2004 when he married Chandra Janway, later welcoming daughters Genevieve Marie in 2010 and Lydia Norriss in 2013. Chandra had a keen interest in art; the two began collecting, and in 2015 she opened the SOCO contemporary art gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina. Johnson began exploring his passion for art and photography by hiring photographers such as Andrew Moore and Danny Clinch to record behind-the-scenes at many of his races. With forewords from racing and sports legends, Jeff Gordon and Troy Aikman, this volume captures photographs from Johnson s early life and the beginning of his illustrious career and also features exhilarating racing snapshots by renowned photographers, Sebastian Kim and Peggy Sirota, as well as images taken Johnson himself. Revelatory, inspiring, and truly thrilling, Johnson s story will appeal to NASCAR enthusiasts, sports lovers, photography fans, and anyone interested in the story of a childhood dream that came true.

The story of Ford's original, home-grown small cars, the Mustang II and Pinto. Follow their progress through a difficult decade when Henry took on the imports, battled bureaucracy and gave America the economy and sports luxury subcompacts they wanted. This book details the successful design, building and sale of these small American Fords that faced domestic and foreign rivals. Mustang II and Pinto went through many permutations, appearance and performance packages - options that have helped the cars become collectible classics, and are prime examples of the decade the pony car survived. Going beyond stock standard were the customizers and racers that pushed the cars and their designs to the limit. Mustang II and Pinto graced enthusiast car magazine covers, and became stars in TV and films. They were small cars that made a big impact, and kept the Mustang galloping. Marc Cranswick draws on his lifelong passion for iconic American cars and this book delivers another unique insight into these models. His other books include Ford Midsize Muscle - Fairlane, Torino & Ranchero; MOPAR Muscle - Barracuda, Dart & Valiant; and Pontiac Firebird - The Auto-Biography.

One of the greatest drivers of his generation, Jim Hall is even better known as an innovator. From his tiny shop in Midland, Texas emerged a series of Chaparrals that changed the face of racing. His high-winged Chaparral 2E Can-Am car and 2F World Sportscar Championship contender may be the most influential race vehicles of the 20th century. Today, every Formula 1 car uses net downforce, driver-adjustable wings, composite chassis, side-mounted radiators, semi-automatic gearboxes and advanced telemetry to optimize vehicle performance - all things Hall pioneered in the mid-1960s. Here he tells his story - his life, his cars, his relationship with Chevrolet, his battles with sanctioning body bureaucracies - for the first time to award-winning author George Levy in this authorized biography.

This is a biography about Tazio Nuvolari (1892-1953) who is widely regarded as the greatest racing driver of all time. In this fascinating assessment of Nuvolari's life, Christopher Hilton seeks to understand Nuvolari the man - and the Nuvolari legend as it unfolded. This new biography is an invaluable addition to motor racing history and essential reading for anyone interested in the sport. During the 1930s into the 1940s his reputation for skill and bravery eclipsed a whole generation of rivals. Even today his name alone evokes a classic era in the history of road and Grand Prix racing. Yet there is no current affordable biography of him in the English language. Using original documentary material, race reports of the time from several countries and the recollections of Nuvolari's contemporaries, the author recreates the excitement generated by his driving and the impact it made on motorsport. Nuvolari's virtuosity at the wheel came with a competitive instinct so fierce that he repeatedly broke cars and his own body. The author captures many aspects of Nuvolari's strong personality - a personality which, in the days before intrusive journalism, was virtually unknown. The extraordinary performances that decorated Nuvolari's long career form the backbone of the narrative - the 1930 Mille Miglia, the 1935 German GP, the 1938 British GP at Donington, the 1948 Mille Miglia. Marking the half century after Nuvolari's death, this new biography is an invaluable addition to motor racing history and essential reading for anyone interested in the sport - even if they are followers of modern Formula 1 heroes like the Schumachers, Coulthard and Montoya.

Racecar driver Earnhardt was at the top of his game-until a minor crash resulted in a concussion that would eventually end his 18-year career. In his only authorized book, Dale shares the inside track on his life and work, reflects on NASCAR, the loss of his dad, and his future as a broadcaster, businessperson, and family man. It was a seemingly minor crash at Michigan International Speedway in June 2016 that ended the day early for NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. What he didn't know was that it would also end his driving for the year. He'd dealt with concussions before, but no two are the same. Recovery can be brutal, and lengthy. When Dale retired from professional stock car racing in 2017, he walked away from his career as a healthy man. But for years, he had worried that the worsening effects of multiple racing-related concussions would end not only his time on the track but his ability to live a full and happy life. Torn between a race-at-all-costs culture and the fear that something was terribly wrong, Earnhardt tried to pretend that everything was fine, but the private notes about his escalating symptoms that he kept on his phone reveal a vicious cycle: suffering injuries on Sunday, struggling through the week, then recovering in time to race again the following weekend. In this candid reflection, Earnhardt opens up for the first time about: The physical and emotional struggles he faced as he fought to close out his career on his own terms His frustration with the slow recovery from multiple racing-related concussions His admiration for the woman who stood by him through it all His determination to share his own experience so that others don't have to suffer in silence Steering his way to the final checkered flag of his storied career proved to be the most challenging race and most rewarding finish of his life.

The subject of this book is Ferrari's racing history from 1960 to 1965, a period that was one of the most successful in the marque's history so far. In this era, which began with completion of the transition from front-engined to rear-engined configuration, Scuderia Ferrari won just about everything with a variety of iconic machinery that included the 'shark-nose' 156 and the fabled 250 GTO. Driving Formula 1 Ferraris, Phil Hill and John Surtees delivered two World Championship titles in the space of four years. Ferrari sports cars racked up a string of six consecutive victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours, a feat subsequently surpassed only by Porsche. This book covers this period in detail for the first time and exclusively features the work of one of the greatest racing photographers ever.

The Ferrari 512S, and its successor the 512M are among the most iconic of Ferrari sports-racing cars. These cars competed against Porsche's all-conquering 917 in 1970 and 1971 - a rivalry immortalised in Steve McQueen's film Le Mans. The car was powered by a 5-litre V-12 engine, and was driven by an impressive portfolio of drivers including Mario Andretti, John Surtees, Clay Regazzoni, Jacky Ickx, Ronnie Peterson and Derek Bell. Although the performance of the Porsche and Ferrari were very similar, the Porsche 917 benefitted from greater reliability, and the Ferraris were unable to challenge the dominance of the German manufacturer before the rules were amended for 1972, effectively outlawing the 5-litre-capacity engines used in both the Ferrari 512 and Porsche 917. In spite of only winning a single World Championship race - the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970 - the Ferrari 512S/M has secured a place as one of the most charismatic sports-racing cars ever built, and the sight and sound of a restored example in full flight today still turns heads.

Lime Rock Park, the oldest continuously operated road course in America came about more by accident than design. Construction of the course began in 1955 at a time when open road racing had been banned in many states, and the use of military and civil airport runways for racing was losing favor with the paying spectators. Dubbed ‘The Road Racing Center of the East’ the park has a turbulent history bedevilled by financial crises, discord with the SCCA New England Region and expensive court cases involving the Lime Rock Protective Association. Despite the struggle to keep the circuit afloat, it prevailed against all odds. This book narrates this history of mixed fortunes during the first twenty years of the park’s existence when it was under the ownership of four different people and contains material unseen before including over 900 images.

Less familiarly, BRP became the first fully sponsored team in Formula 1, partnering with Yeoman Credit, a go-ahead finance house, in an initiative that led to a transformation of the sport. This book tells the entire history of BRP in unprecedented detail, thanks to the author's prodigious research and numerous interviews over the years with many leading participants, including Moss himself, team boss Ken Gregory, top driver Tony Brooks, chief mechanic Tony Robinson and many others.
