The Science of Motorsport (Hardcover): David Ferguson The Science of Motorsport (Hardcover)
David Ferguson
R4,473 Discovery Miles 44 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Despite its worldwide following, high levels of investment and scientific complexity, there is a lack of evidence-based literature on the science of human performance in motorsport. Focusing on the physiological, psychological and sport medicine aspects of training, performance, injury and safety, The Science of Motorsport is the first book to provide an accessible and up-to-date resource for stakeholders at all levels of motorsport. Addressing the physiological and psychological stresses of racing across a full range of sports, from Formula 1 and IndyCar to NASCAR and endurance racing, the book includes chapters on: * nutritional and physical training strategies for drivers; * the driver's neck; * injury rates and pathologies of open-wheel driving; * return to competition from concussion; * driver safety; * and considerations for pit crews and safety staff. Accessibly written and made up of contributions from world-leading authorities in motorsport science research, this is a crucial resource for racing drivers, physical trainers, pit crew members and safety personnel, as well as researchers and students with an interest in applied sport physiology, applied sport psychology or sport medicine.

This book, continuing Veloce's highly-successful Rally Giants series, features all of the WRC events entered by the Lancer as a works machine, including detailed results (even down to registration numbers), and a fine selection of contemporary photography to bring the era back to life. An essential title for Mitsubishi and rallying enthusiasts alike.

This is the story of Graham Warner and his plucky London-based dealership/race team, the Chequered Flag, which bested all-comers in most major motorsport disciplines. A former RAF man, Warner competed at international level as a sports car driver, created the Gemini brand of Formula Juniors as a manufacturer, fielded cars on behalf of Lotus, Brabham and McLaren as an entrant, and as a talent spotter, he gave Jim Clark his maiden start in a single-seater, later running drivers such as Jackie Stewart, Jackie Ickx, Piers Courage and many more on motorsport's nursery slope. Having reached the pinnacle of Formula One with a privateer Brabham, Warner changed tack and fielded the fearsome Lancia Stratos with memorable success in rallying, before returning to his first love of aviation. Here for the first time is the full history of one of the unsung heroes of motorsport.

The Curse of the Indy 500 - 1958's Tragic Legacy (Paperback): Stan Sutton The Curse of the Indy 500 - 1958's Tragic Legacy (Paperback)
Stan Sutton
R453 Discovery Miles 4 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

On May 30, 1958, thousands of racing fans poured into the infield at dawn to claim the best seats of the Indianapolis 500, unaware that they were going to witness one of the most notorious wrecks in racing history. Seconds after the green flag, a game of chicken spiraled out of control into a fiery 16-car pile-up that claimed the life of 29-year-old Indiana native and rising star Pat O'Connor. The other drivers escaped death, but the tragic 1958 Indy 500 seemed to leave its mark on them: the surviving drivers were hounded by accidents and terrible crashes, and most would die at tracks around the country. But the tragedy also prompted new regulations and safety precautions like roll bars that would ultimately save hundreds of lives. In The Curse of Indy 500: 1958's Tragic Legacy, veteran sportswriter Stan Sutton profiles the ill-fated race and the careers of the drivers involved, highlighting their lives in the dangerous world of auto racing.

This book covers the present-day motorcyclist subculture in America in a serious and scholarly fashion. It combines more than 45 years of the author's riding experiences with data collected over five years of systematic observation and extensive ethnographic interviews with over 200 male and female riders. Much has been written about hardcore bikers, the one-percenters, but there has been little scholarly research on the much larger segment of the population more aptly called motorcycle enthusiasts, or simply motorcyclists, than bikers. This book focuses on them--the hard working plumbers, construction workers, truck drivers, and other blue collar workers as well as the white collar executives, teachers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals who are mostly married, have mortgages, pay their bills, obey the law, and on weekends and holidays participate in a favorite pastime, riding motorcycles.

'I loved it. I thought it was fascinating - really, really interesting story that he's got to tell... I've known him for years and I learned an awful lot.' Marc Priestley Kimi Raikkoenen is the Finnish superstar Formula One driver with a reputation for being fast on the track and silent off it - until now! In this superb and authorised portrait of Raikkoenen, Kari Hotakainen gets to reveal the side of the man that few beyond his close family and friends have ever seen. Enigmatic and private, Ferrari's former world champion driver rarely opens up to outsiders, but he granted Hotakainen exclusive access to his world and to his way of thinking. It ensures that this will be a book that will delight all fans of motorsport, who have long revered the Finn. Including never-previously-seen photographs from his own collection, The Unknown Kimi Raikkoenen takes the reader into the heart of the action at grands prix around the world, behind the scenes as race strategies are planned, and opens up the private side of his life that he normally guards so carefully. With all the cult appeal of I Am Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the raw excitement of Formula One and the insight of the best biographies, this is a book every sports fan will want to treasure.

The official Superbike World Championship book has always tried to transmit this important fact through its pictures. From the 2010 edition, that message is further developed and goes even deeper into the technical aspects of the sport, so extremely interesting to the most competent fans. But as well as the bikes, the men of the category are able to maintain close contact with their public. That is why champions and their colleagues recount their human side as well as their sports career, aspects to which ample space has been given in the Superbike annual. There is no lack of chapters devoted to other categories (Supersport, Superstock 1000, Superstock 600), which complete the world championship programme. All highlighted by the most spectacular pictures of the season.

The best of Kris is still to come.

By the early 1960s, Ford Motor Company, built to bring automobile transportation to the masses, was falling behind. Baby boomers were taking to the roads in droves, looking for speed not safety, style not comfort, and Ford didn't offer what these young drivers wanted. Meanwhile, Enzo Ferrari lorded over the European racing scene, crafting beautiful, fast sports cars that epitomized style.
"Go Like Hell" tells the remarkable story of how Henry Ford II, with the help of a young visionary named Lee Iacocca and a former racing champion turned engineer named Carroll Shelby, concocted a scheme to reinvent the Ford company. They would enter the high-stakes world of European car racing, where an adventurous few threw safety and sanity to the wind. They would design, build, and race a car that could beat Ferrari at his own game, at the most prestigious and brutal race in the world, the 24 Hours of LeMans.
"Go Like Hell" transports readers to a risk-filled, glorious time through this brilliant portrait of a rivalry between two industrialists, the cars they built, and the "pilots" who drove them to their victory, or doom.

Motor Racing at Nassau in the 1950s and 1960s (Paperback): Terry O'Neil Motor Racing at Nassau in the 1950s and 1960s (Paperback)
Terry O'Neil
R398 Discovery Miles 3 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Motor Racing at Nassau focuses on the vision of one man, Captain Sherman 'Red' Crise, and his quest to bring motor racing to the Bahamas. From its stuttering start in 1954, his event rapidly developed in stature to become the most important and prestigious sports car event on the race calendar other than World Championship events. The races started in the mid-1950s and continued for thirteen years, and are described by many commentators as the 'Golden Age' of motor racing, where internationally acclaimed drivers attended Nassau to mix with the many amateur racers from America and enjoy the sun, parties and racing. For many drivers, the social scene was as important as the racing, and in later years prize money was an extra incentive to turn up - in 1960, it was claimed to be the highest paying event on the race calendar. Words alone cannot begin to describe the atmosphere generated at the races, so the wealth of previously unpublished photographs together with a complete collection of program covers, and other material accumulated during six years of research, bring real vibrancy to these fascinating race accounts.

The Honourable Mrs Victor Bruce: record-breaking racing motorist; speedboat racer; pioneering aviator and businesswoman - remarkable achievements for a woman of the 1920s and '30s. Mildred Bruce enjoyed a privileged background that allowed her to search for thrills beyond the bounds of most female contemporaries. She raced against the greats at Brooklands, drove 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle and won the first ladies' prize at the Monte Carlo Rally. Whilst Amy Johnson was receiving global acclaim for her flight to Australia, Mildred learned to fly, and a mere eight weeks later she embarked on a round-the-world flight, becoming the first person to fly solo from the UK to Japan. Captured by brigands and feted by the Siamese, Japanese and Americans, she survived several crashes with body and spirit intact, and became a glittering aviation celebrity on her return. A thoroughly modern woman, she pushed similar boundaries in her unconventional love life and later became Britain's first female airline entrepreneur. This is the story of a charismatic woman who defied the conventions of her time, and loved living life in the fast lane.

1952 was one of the most important years in Mercedes-Benz racing history; after a 13-year absence, it returned to motor sport competition with an automobile that rewrote the history of modern sports car racing. The 300 SL's debut was the culmination of a long, difficult road back to racing for Mercedes-Benz after a 13 year break. This book vividly depicts the 300 SL's performance in the five races in which it competed in 1952, and tells the story of how it became the most successful competition sports car of that year. Through dramatic photographs, and equally stirring text, one of the greatest years of sports car racing is brought to life, filled with automobiles often finished in national racing colours, prepared by great factory teams, driven by men who were national sporting idols, and raced under gruelling conditions unique to the age. From its Mille Miglia debut, through the Nurburgring, the Le Mans 24 Hours, to its greatest race, the Carrera Panamericana, the 300 SL's career from conception to retirement is presented, culminating with a detailed photographic essay illustrating restoration of the oldest 300 SL in existence.

Filling the many gaps in Formula 1 records, this book re-writes the racing history books. The history of F1 can be neatly divided into two eras, the first formally ending January 1980 when the terms 'Grand Prix' and 'World Championship' became synonymous, although there would be three more non-championship races after that date. However, up to January 1973 OVER HALF of F1 races were NOT included in the Championship results for the spurious reason that each country should have just a single F1 race. The classification of many F1 races as 'non-Championship' did a disservice to the achievements of drivers of the Fangio, Moss, Clark and Stewart era and, even more-so, to the four pre-Championship years which began in 1946. When, today, a commentator says "Rosberg's 16th win equals the F1 wins of Stirling Moss" this is manifestly untrue. If the same drivers, in the same F1 cars, compete at the same tracks, and over a similar distance, then each race deserves to have its place in the records as a 'Championship quality' event. This book includes such races alongside contemporary Championship races and, combined with known figures since 1980, produces what can surely be accepted as 'The Real Score' of Formula 1.

R500 Discovery Miles 5 000 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a paperback reprint - back due to popular demand. It includes analysis of his greatest races and the changing technology of his bikes. It is an in-depth, richly illustrated biography of one of motorcycling's best-loved characters. Fourth in a series intended to cover the careers of the world's greatest motorcycle racing champions, "Bob McIntyre - The Flying Scot" tells the story of the man who never actually won a world championship - but certainly deserved to. In many ways he was the two-wheel equivalent of car racing driver Stirling Moss, who is seen as one of the greats in his sport although he never won an official world title. Well over four decades since his untimely death, following an accident that occurred while racing his 500cc Manx Norton at Oulton Park, Cheshire in August 1962, Bob McIntyre's memory lives on. An annual Bob McIntyre Memorial race meeting held at East Fortune attracts racing enthusiasts from as far afield as Australia. Not only was 'Bob Mac' a brilliantly gifted rider and self-taught mechanic, he was also a man of the people, someone who would always help a fellow competitor or take the time to sign an autograph or chat to a fan. He was also honest, loyal and modest; his word was his bond. Unlike the three riders already covered in this series, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood and Giacomo Agostini, Bob Mac was very much a self-made man; someone who started from the very bottom and reached the very top in his chosen profession. He was the first man to lap the Isle of Man TT circuit, the most fearsome in the world, at over 100 mph; and this was just one of his great achievements. This in-depth account of his career focusses on the bikes and the races but also provides an insight in Bob's life away from the track. Lavishly illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, it is a must-read for any motorcycling fan.

Paul Lawrence; Foreword by Stirling Moss
R962 R822 Discovery Miles 8 220 Save R140 (15%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is the story of the Historic Sports Car Club. Over a period of 50 years, the Club grew from the germ of an idea to become Britain's leading race organising Club for cars from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The Club's strapline is 'pure historic racing'. This unique book, illustrated with over 500 photographs, tells the story of half a century of growth for historic racing in Great Britain. It is a story of ups and downs, of triumph and tragedy. From humble beginnings, the early years were faltering before the Club moved into race organisation in the early 1980s. There were times of financial trauma and upheaval and the Club came close to bankruptcy. However, the last two decades have been spectacularly successful. The race programme has grown, the membership has hit record levels and the portfolio of championships has doubled. Allied to that success, the Club's finances have improved beyond all recognition and its standing in British motor sport has scaled new heights. This is the story of those 50 years: but it is also the story of the people behind the Club, people who cared enough about historic motor racing to play a role in building the Historic Sports Car Club.

It is a subject that Mick Walker had wanted to cover for many, many years, because he had always thought that the sidecar boys (and a few girls!) seemed to get a raw deal, both with the organisers and the press. In actual fact the sidecar event was often the highlight of a days racing and were generally loved by spectators. Once the motorcycle had become firmly established, the next question was how could it carry more people? The earliest examples of the 'sidecar' arrived just after the turn of the 20th century, and by 1903 a couple of firms were already offering them for sale. The first sidecar world records were established in 1922 by Cyril Pullin at Brooklands Learn all about the history of sidecars racing and its competitors from the beginning in Mick Walkers latest book.

Motorcycle racing in Great Britain began in 1907 with the opening of Brooklands near Weybridge in Surrey, the first purpose-built circuit in Europe and the inaugural staging of the Isle of Man TT. Then, during the interwar period came venues such as Cadwell Park, Crystal Palace, Syston and Donington Park. However, it was after the end of World War Two in 1945 that circuit racing really established itself. There was an influx of former wartime airfields including Boreham, Haddonham, Ibsley, Thruxton, Silverstone, and Snetterton but also Brands Hatch, Alton Towers, Scarborough, and Outton Park to name but a few. North of the border came Beveridge Park, Errol and Charterholl, while across the Irish Sea, the Ulster Grand Prix and the North West 200 were bolstered by a myriad of new road courses.
