On June 17, 2006, unknown part-time driver David Gilliland brought his homemade car and can-do attitude to Kentucky Speedway. With just seven NASCAR starts, his best Nationwide finish was 29th. But that night he achieved one of the sport's greatest upsets ever. Circle of Hope: An Inspiring NASCAR Journey profiles fascinating lesser-known drivers in NASCAR's two top series through joy and triumph, disappointment and defeat. Journalist Deann Alford follows hope-driven stories of Sprint Cup driver David Reutimann; NASCAR legend Morgan Shepherd; ARCA truck champion Brett Rowe; Nationwide driver Eric McClure; and David Gilliland whose spectacular win landed on NASCAR media's ballot for "Race of the Decade." This book offers behind-the-scenes portraits of drivers and those covering the sport, plus vignettes with stars Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Trevor Bayne and celebrated dirt racer Buzzie Reutimann. Each provided the author with hope amid her own darkest season of grief. Circle of Hope brings refreshing encouragement to those needing hope, no matter their walk, in their own battles of life.
Motorcycle road racing at its highest level attracts a very select band of participants; undeniably brave and skilful, but well aware of the hazards involved in pursuing such a career. Looking back to one hundred years ago, an earlier generation of young men was prepared to accept that same challenge. However any comparison with their spindly machines, practically devoid of suspension and braking systems, to the space-age Moto GP projectiles is quite unrealistic. TT winners, pre-war and post-war feature in this selection of iconic riders, covering the period from the 1920s to the1960s. Also included are the early post-war world champions; Graham, Lomas and many others in decades of great technical and historical interest. The book contains stunning pencil sketches of all the riders.
"We have to recreate the enthusiasm that surrounded the SPORT models, ever a synonym for the Lancia Zagatos": in 1991 this was the brief the recent graduate Andrea Zagato gave to Marco Pedracini, a young designer who had not long been hired by prestigious coachbuilder. It was out of this fortuitous and fortunate coming together of this far-sighted idea and the enthusiasm of Paul Koot, a Dutch fan and a businessman in the automotive sector, that an icon was born, the HYENA. A beautiful car, but one practically unknown to the general public. A car that could have repeated and even surpassed the commercial and sporting success of the Lancia Delta Integrale from which it was derived. Unfortunatley just 24 examples were produced due to the debateable decision taken by the Fiat/Lancia directors of the time. Following a rapid review of the evolution of the Lancia Delta over the year, this book, written by an enthusiastic collector, examines the difficult genesis of the Hyena, from the first steps with the publication of the very first (previously unpublished) sketches and numerous photos and then follows its development, engineering and production through to its presentation at the car shows and in brochures. The book is completed by a comprehensive technical section, with the project list and the spare parts catalogue as well as an extensive photographic portrait of one particular example, N. 20. Lastly, all 24 Lancia Hyenas are examined, with the intention of reconstructing their specifications, their destination and the country in which they are jealously conserved by the enthusiast and collectors who possess a precious example.
A look at the drivers and teams who have won only one World Championship Grand Prix, since the formation of the championship in 1950. Updated for 2013 with all the latest information and statistics, plus photographs.
The 2013 Formula One season was dominated by the Vettel/ Red Bull-Renault package, which won 13 of the 19 races. Many reckon that Vettel is one of the great drivers. Some however argue that Vettel was fortunate in having the fastest car, the Red Bull-Renault. Just how good was Vettel compared with his peers? This publication compares grand prix and Formula One drivers, cars and packages in simple arithmetic terms. For the first time the driver has been separated from the car and each is expressed as separate performance elements that make up the performance package. Just how much current four-time champion Vettel contributes to the Red Bull-Renault's recent dominance is explained and quantified. The author's analysis starts from the first car race in 1894, from Paris to Rouen, and includes over 1,200 grand prix races. The Patrick O'Brien Grand Prix Rating System is divided into 13 volumes, one for each decade of the pre-Formula One era (1894-1949) and Formula One era (1950-2013). This book covers 1930-1939.
This book started as a self-serving exercise to personally organize the major details and interesting facts of each Indianapolis 500 over the 100-year history of the greatest race in the world. For many of us passionate racing fans who have attended a multitude of "500s," there is a tendency for the details of the races to (somewhat) blend together. I hope this book will help to provide clarity in this regard, as well as educate. During high school, many of us chose to use CliffsNotes to assist in the education process. This book is somewhat patterned after that concept. It falls somewhere between Donald Davidson and Rick Schaffer's Autocourse Official History of the Indianapolis 500-the best and by far the most detailed book on the history of the Indianapolis 500-and a multitude of pictorial books with limited information. I hope it will prove to be an easy read with entertaining and educational information.
In the title story, Kirk wrenches and wrecks hot rods, and goes to school. Those who recall the 1970s culture of muscle cars and motorcycles will grin at the moto-craziness and the mostly harmless hooliganism of the era. The book is also filled with stories of riding and wrenching those fun-filled hot rods of the two-wheeled variety. Kirk not only describes their mechanical challenges, but also the great rewards granted to those who ride them.
The best dual-sport and off-road motorcycle adventure riding reports from Team Ruptured Buzzard include the chronicles of Stovebolt and his friends as they rally across dusty tracks in the desert and mountains, caught up in the slipstreams of adventure from Baja, Nevada, Idaho and Montana. Gritty and down to earth, the pages unfold one after another, inviting readers to pause in reflection around a campfire under starry skies and then hang on for dear life while racing across a desert floor on the outskirts of Area 51 as fighter jets patrol overhead. While not a guidebook, it will entertain and perhaps inspire readers to get out there and track down dreams of their own; sucking marrow from the bones along the way. And, to Never Give Up

MIKE HAWTHORN, BRITAIN'S FIRST WORLD MOTOR RACING CHAMPION, was internationally famous by the time of his death. The dashing young Englishman had just won an epic battle for the title against Stirling Moss in a classic last race duel; similar to that between James Hunt and Nicki Lauda in 1976, and Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in 2014. However, back in the 1950s, Formula 1 was a quasi-amateur sport, in which prizes were modest, the risk of death unimaginably high and where there was scant reporting of the drivers' off-track activities. Mike's penchant for fast driving was matched by an appetite for pretty girls, beer, aeroplanes and practical jokes - all of which got him into a great many scrapes. What usually got him out was his charm. In this re-telling of Mike's story, 'Too Fast A Life' endeavours to paint an unbiased picture of a troubled young man, focusing more on feelings than feeler-gauges, and uniquely questions whether his life could have ended differently.
