If you remember off-road stars like the Rickman brothers' Vic
Eastwood, Lew Coffin, and John Avery, then this is a must-have book
for your collection. They're big names who brought the thrills and
spills of the golden era of motorcycle sport to a whole generation.
For the author, it's a personal trip down memory lane, as he was
lucky enough to see many of these men and women at the height of
their racing careers. Seventeen of the rider profiles in this book
originally appeared over a three-year period in the pages of The
Classic Motorcycle magazine, but the profile on the Rickman
brothers - two of scrambling's true greats - has never been seen in
print before. Accompanied by a totally new set of over 100 stunning
photographs, this is a book that will evoke fond memories for all
who share the author's love of motorcycle sport in a golden age.
In 1947, 4,000 motorcycle hobbyists converged on Hollister,
California. As images of dissolute bikers graced the pages of
newspapers and magazines, the three-day gathering sparked the
growth of a new subculture while also touching off national alarm.
In the years that followed, the stereotypical leather-clad biker
emerged in the American consciousness as a menace to law-abiding
motorists and small towns. Yet a few short decades later, the
motorcyclist, once menacing, became mainstream. To understand this
shift, Randy D. McBee narrates the evolution of motorcycle culture
since World War II. Along the way he examines the rebelliousness of
early riders of the 1940s and 1950s, riders' increasing connection
to violence and the counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s, the rich
urban bikers of the 1990s and 2000s, and the factors that gave rise
to a motorcycle rights movement. McBee's fascinating narrative of
motorcycling's past and present reveals the biker as a crucial
character in twentieth-century American life.

The annual number of motorcycle rider fatalities in the United
States increased from 2294 in 1998 to 5290 in 2008 (National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2010). Many multi-vehicle
motorcycle crashes involve right-of-way violations where another
vehicle turns in front of, or crosses the path of an on-coming
motorcycle. Improving the frontal conspicuity of motorcycles with
auxiliary forward lighting may reduce these types of crashes. This
book describes some recent studies sponsored by NHTSA on motorcycle
conspicuity.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA), per vehicle mile travelled in 2010, motorcyclists were
about 30 times more likely to die in a traffic crash than passenger
car occupants. States have implemented various strategies to
address the factors contributing to motorcycle crashes and
fatalities, and NHTSA has assisted these efforts through guidance,
grants, and research. This book examines motorcycle crashes and
state safety efforts.

No longer the simple machines they used to be, the modern
motorcycle is as complex and diverse as the modern car. In an ever
more competitive market, manufacturers are looking for new
solutions to old problems - what's the most efficient transmission?
How can emissions and fuel consumption be cut without affecting
power? And how can new models be differentiated from one
another? This book explains how the modern motorcycle works, in a
straightforward style that's jargon-free and easy to read. It
assumes no prior mechanical knowledge, simply an interest in a
motorcycle's workings, and an open mind. The text is accompanied by
superb cutaway illustrations from the major motorcycle
manufacturers, clearly showing how individual components and
systems function. It covers the latest innovations, including
traction control and pushbutton gear change, as well as
long-established technologies, such as fuel injection and ABS.How
your motorcycle works will not transform you into a motorcycle
engineer or expert mechanic, but in explaining precisely how
everything works, it will increase your understanding, and thus
enjoyment, of the machine.
