In this book we give you everything you need to equip yourself to become the best cyclist you can be. The book will introduce you to the origins of the humble bicycle, as well as key safety and cycling regulations and tips on staying alive.

As a cyclist knowing your equipment and the anatomy of your bike is important. Other chapters include the gear (kitting yourself out properly), the workshop (how to care for your bike), set-up and skills (basic set-up, road skills and MTB skills) as well as training and nutrition (the basics, recovery, injury and illness). The last chapter focuses on top events highlighting the top 5 road races and MTB races and other popular cycle races, uniquely African races, DIY and the ultras.

Of course once you have equipped yourself with this knowledge we give you a fantastic ride and training logbook, because practice makes perfect.

So get your ride on, with the ultimate South Africa Bike Book & Events Guide today!

The Last Overland - 21,000 km, 23 Countries And One Very Old Land Rover (Paperback): Alex Bescoby The Last Overland - 21,000 km, 23 Countries And One Very Old Land Rover (Paperback)
Alex Bescoby
R283 Discovery Miles 2 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

‘A journey that I don’t think could be made again today’. It was this comment by Sir David Attenborough on the fiftieth anniversary of the iconic First Overland expedition that became an irresistible challenge for filmmaker and adventurer Alex Bescoby.

In 1955, Attenborough, then a young TV producer, was approached by six recent university graduates determined to drive the entire length of ‘Eurasia’, from London to Singapore. It was the unclimbed Everest of motoring – many had tried, none had succeeded. Sensing this time might be different, Attenborough gave the expedition enough film reel to cover their attempt. The 19,000-mile journey completed by Tim Slessor and the team captivated a nation emerging from postwar austerity. Tim’s book, The First Overland, soon became the bible of the overlanding religion.

Inspired by the First Overland, Alex made contact with now eighty-six-year-old Tim and together they planned an epic recreation of the original trip, this time from Singapore to London. Their goal was to complete the legendary journey started more than sixty years ago in the original Land Rover. In awe of the unstoppable Tim, and haunted by his own grandfather’s declining health, Alex and his team soon find themselves battling rough roads, breakdowns and Oxford’s constantly leaky roof to discover a world changed for the better – and worse – since the first expedition.

America's Addiction to Automobiles - Why Cities Need to Kick the Habit and How (Hardcover): Chad Frederick America's Addiction to Automobiles - Why Cities Need to Kick the Habit and How (Hardcover)
Chad Frederick
R2,039 Discovery Miles 20 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A provocative look at our nation's dependency on the automobile and how its potential impact on urban design will either make or break our health, economy, and quality of life. In this thought-provoking work, author and urban planning expert Chad Frederick scrutinizes the use of automobiles in cities, investigating its role in exacerbating urban inequalities and thwarting sustainability of modern society. Through a comprehensive, thoughtful discussion, Frederick illustrates how the automobile is fundamentally at odds with the very nature of cities. He shows how cars impose huge burdens on our health, equity, environment, local and national economy, and quality of life. Most of all, he shows how automobile dependency has put our entire society at risk. The book delves into the monumental role of automobiles in the development of cities after the Great Depression, impacting the American identity and affecting the way we produce and manage urban spaces. Frederick provides compelling evidence that cities with more diverse modes of transportation are greener, healthier, more prosperous, and even more enjoyable places to live than automobile-dependent cities. He identifies one institution responsible for our inability to improve our cities: the social sciences, and examines the root cause of our inability to make progress toward more multi-modal cities. In conclusion, the author offers a radical solution for moving beyond the underlying logic that forces us to create automobile-dependent cities. Shows how automobiles in urban areas harm health, economy, and society overall Explains why some are opposing the movement toward more multi-modal cities and why 40 years of research in this area has not resulted in better cities Explores how automobile dependency exerts enormous power over our daily lives by shaping the kind and quality of our social interactions, and by influencing our civic attitudes and worldviews Illustrates the broad impacts of automobile use that reach into every aspect of modern life: from public health and income inequality, to environmental quality and quality of life

The London Passenger Transport Board had been in existence just over six years when Britain entered into war with Germany on 3rd September 1939. A year before, measures had been put in place to provide trench shelters, first aid points, and the adaptation of pits in garages to become shelters. Over twenty thousand male staff were called up during the war, and women joined the ranks to fill the void. One hundred and eighty one members of staff were killed whilst on duty, with over eighteen hundred injured. Heroic work, and the will to "get on with it" was the general way of getting things done, summed up by just one of many examples at Athol Street garage, nearer the end of the war. It was the Board's most bombed garage, due to the nearby docks, and after a rocket fell at 6am within 100 yards of the premises blowing out the windows of 25 buses, and causing considerable damage, the staff were able to get all of the buses out on time that day. This book is a largely chronological story of the period, focusing in particular on the behind-the-scenes planning by London Transport, both before the war and during it.

R371 R296 Discovery Miles 2 960 Save R75 (20%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6. Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well travelled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead. When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She'd ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She'd survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she'd fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, satnavs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today. Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure.

Wayne Asher
R815 Discovery Miles 8 150 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The London Ringways were a set of urban motorways planned for London in the 1960s and 1970s. They would have been the largest civil engineering project since the war - and cost between 60,000 and 100,000 people their homes. They would have devastated the environment and turned London into a car dominated city. This is the first full-length history of the Ringways; what they were, where they would have gone - and how Londoners fought them off. Wayne Asher is a former journalist turned IT manager. His first book - A Very Political Railway - examined the near death and rebirth of the North London Line.

There have been a number of books on the subject of Underground posters, but these have mainly dealt with the large posters seen on walls inside and outside Underground stations. However there were also many smaller posters and these were often known as car cards or panel posters and they were mainly designed to appear inside the vehicles themselves. These smaller posters have not previously been given the attention they deserve, even though the fame of their designers and the quality of their design can often equal that of the larger and better known posters. This book hopes to go some way to correct this omission.
