In the late 19th century, bicyling and motoring offered new ways for a hardy minority to travel. Escaping from the 'tyranny' of the train timetables, these entrepreneurs were able to promote private mobility when the road, technology and infrastructure were unequal to the task. With a moribund network out of town, poor roadside accommodation and few services, how could road traction persist and ultimately thrive? Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, including magazines, newspapers and advice books on stable management, this book explores the emergence and development of bicycling and automobility in Britain, with a focus on the racing driver-cum-entrepreneur SF Edge (1868-1940) and his network. Craig Horner considers the motivations, prejudices and cultures of those who promoted and consumed road traction, providing new insights into social class, leisure, sport and tourism in Britain. In addition, he places early British bicycling and automobility in an international context, providing fruitful comparisons with the movements in France, Germany and the United States. The Emergence of Bicycling and Automobility in Britain is an excellent resource for scholars and students interested in mobility studies, social and cultural history, and the history of technology.

The Jaguar XK was launched to great acclaim in 1996 as the successor to the XJS. Jaguar's XK sports models were produced from 1996 to 2014 in two distinct forms: the original steel-bodied XK, and, in 2005, the advanced technology aluminium-bodied New XK. Highly significant for Jaguar, these cars reintroduced the world to Jaguar sports car motoring and, in doing so, echoed the success of previous icons, such as the E-type. The original edition of this book covered just the X-100 (original series) XKs from 1996 through to 2005. This edition, now in paperback, brings the story up to date with the X-150 alloy-bodied cars, from 2006 through to the end of production in 2014. A significantly enlarged work, packed with information and over 130 additional full-colour pictures, this fascinating book is essential reading for all XK owners, prospective owners and enthusiasts - the perfect XK 'handbook.'

Traffic congestion is a growing problem and unless policy makers and transportation officials make some dramatic changes, it will rise to unacceptable levels by 2030. In, Sam Staley and Adrian Moore explain the inefficient systems and politics that cause this escalating epidemic, presenting commonsense, high-tech solutions that will ease congestion and its troubling consequences. The book considers transportation policy through the intersection of four crucial and timely elements: global, economic, and cultural competitiveness; urban development trends; demographics; and transportation engineering and design. It sets goals for congestion reduction, outlines performance standards that increase transparency, calls for the redesign of the regional transportation network, and describes sufficient investment in technology.

This volume gives an overview of the trends in Traffic and
Transport Psychology. It reflects the considerable development of
the most important factors for driving a road vehicle, and the
variety of international research approaches. The first part contains basic approaches and integrated models
as well as general theories and their implementation into Traffic
and Transport Psychology. The second part deals with the driver, especially cognition,
performance, social and differential effects and impairment.
Important aspects are treated, such as speed perception, reaction
times, interaction, risk acceptance, aggression and gender
differences. Special chapters refer to performance and
fatigue. The third part focuses on safety, driver support, selection and
influencing drivers by enforcement, training and programs for the
rehabilitation of traffic offenders. Classic ergonomic methods are
discussed as well as modern telematic devices, or trends regarding
driver-assessment. In the last part, current developments are presented in relation
to better mobility and the protection of the environment. Questions
are asked, such as whether we could reduce the use of cars, how
travel behaviour can be modified or to what extent the use of
alternatives to motor vehicles benefits safety as well as the
environment. This work is not only important for psychologists. It should be read by all transport professionals interested in the application of psychology to traffic. |
