In 1947, 4,000 motorcycle hobbyists converged on Hollister,
California. As images of dissolute bikers graced the pages of
newspapers and magazines, the three-day gathering sparked the
growth of a new subculture while also touching off national alarm.
In the years that followed, the stereotypical leather-clad biker
emerged in the American consciousness as a menace to law-abiding
motorists and small towns. Yet a few short decades later, the
motorcyclist, once menacing, became mainstream. To understand this
shift, Randy D. McBee narrates the evolution of motorcycle culture
since World War II. Along the way he examines the rebelliousness of
early riders of the 1940s and 1950s, riders' increasing connection
to violence and the counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s, the rich
urban bikers of the 1990s and 2000s, and the factors that gave rise
to a motorcycle rights movement. McBee's fascinating narrative of
motorcycling's past and present reveals the biker as a crucial
character in twentieth-century American life.
The Triumph 750 is probably the classic British motorcycle that
most people will recognise, whether they are an enthusiast or not.
Their desirability continues to grow, aided by their easy
availability and excellent parts back up. This book is aimed at the
DIY enthusiast interested in their renovation and restoration, and
is fully illustrated with high quality colour images, coupled with
clear and concise text.Following the real life resurrection of a
T140E, with all the work being carried out by the author, the book
shows how to assess wear in all mechanical components, then assists
in deciding the most cost effective method of dealing with it. The
process is dealt with in detail giving the owner the confidence to
carry out their own repairs to a high standard, which will be both
cost effective and satisfying. Brakes, suspension, brightwork and
trim are all also addressed, making this an essential purchase for
all Triumph 750 owners.
The building of a vintage Indian Chief motorcycle is more than the
restoration of a bike-it's the resurrection of a dream. Rebuilding
the Indian chronicles one man's journey through the fearful expanse
of midlife in a quest for peace, parts, and a happy second
fatherhood. Fred Haefele was a writer who couldn't get his book
published, an arborist whose precarious livelihood might just kill
him, and an expectant father for the first time in over twenty
years. He was in a rut, until he purchased a box of parts not so
euphemistically referred to as a "basket case" and tackled the
restoration of an Indian Chief motorcycle. With limited mechanical
skills, one foot in the money pit, and a colorful cast of local
experts, Haefele takes us down the rocky road of restoration to the
headlong, heart-thrilling rush of open highway on his gleaming
midnight-blue Millennium Flyer.

The annual number of motorcycle rider fatalities in the United
States increased from 2294 in 1998 to 5290 in 2008 (National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2010). Many multi-vehicle
motorcycle crashes involve right-of-way violations where another
vehicle turns in front of, or crosses the path of an on-coming
motorcycle. Improving the frontal conspicuity of motorcycles with
auxiliary forward lighting may reduce these types of crashes. This
book describes some recent studies sponsored by NHTSA on motorcycle
conspicuity.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA), per vehicle mile travelled in 2010, motorcyclists were
about 30 times more likely to die in a traffic crash than passenger
car occupants. States have implemented various strategies to
address the factors contributing to motorcycle crashes and
fatalities, and NHTSA has assisted these efforts through guidance,
grants, and research. This book examines motorcycle crashes and
state safety efforts.

motorcycle designs of modern times. This guide provides an overview
of the collectible models built by Honda, with detailed
specifications and an evaluation of each machine. Includes iconic

information about parts availability, ease of use, and maintenance
issues, the book allows you to explore the wonders and the beauty
of Honda's finest creations. In Classic Honda Motorcycles, Bill
Silver takes you from the early days of the Honda Cubs into the
1990s, where sophisticated machinery of all sizes brought riding
pleasure - as well as a deeply felt sense of beauty and function -
to Honda owners around the globe.
No longer the simple machines they used to be, the modern
motorcycle is as complex and diverse as the modern car. In an ever
more competitive market, manufacturers are looking for new
solutions to old problems - what's the most efficient transmission?
How can emissions and fuel consumption be cut without affecting
power? And how can new models be differentiated from one
another? This book explains how the modern motorcycle works, in a
straightforward style that's jargon-free and easy to read. It
assumes no prior mechanical knowledge, simply an interest in a
motorcycle's workings, and an open mind. The text is accompanied by
superb cutaway illustrations from the major motorcycle
manufacturers, clearly showing how individual components and
systems function. It covers the latest innovations, including
traction control and pushbutton gear change, as well as
long-established technologies, such as fuel injection and ABS.How
your motorcycle works will not transform you into a motorcycle
engineer or expert mechanic, but in explaining precisely how
everything works, it will increase your understanding, and thus
enjoyment, of the machine.
"Live to Ride "is pure adrenaline--a full-throttle exploration of
motorcycles that pushes to the limit, with heart-pounding accounts
of riding the greatest bikes of all time, all over the world.
"Live to ride, ride to live." For many motorcycle riders, these
words express life's guiding principle. Just take a look at the
patch emblazoned on the jackets of legions of riders. Whether
they're roaring down an empty highway on two wheels at an insane
speed, hopping on for a few mind-boggling loops of motocross,
joining in the "rolling thunder" of a veritable outlaw motorcycle
club, or just cruising on a Harley on a Sunday afternoon,
motorcyclists of all stripes share a common love of the freedom
that is riding.
Wayne Johnson, a lifelong motorcycle-lover and acclaimed writer,
takes us around the globe and onto the terrain where the most
extreme, thrilling forms of riding happen. Johnson shows where it
all began more than a hundred years ago when the first motorcycle
evolved from the bicycle and lands us on the track today with some
of the world's highest-paid athletes-- professional motorcycle road
racers. From there we go inside radically different competitions
like the vertigo-inspiring "Widowmaker Hillclimb" and the fastest
land racing on the planet at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Johnson
also offers an inside look at the legendarily secretive culture of
biker clubs with firsthand accounts of his own wild rides with an
outlaw club. In every one of these venues, you aren't just passing
through as an observer--you are on a bike, racing across new and
undiscovered country, the horizon your only destination.
If you have ever wondered what it's like to climb on a motorcycle
and feel its engine roar to life, or have actually done it and felt
the rush of flying off into the wild blue yonder, or have simply
been intrigued by this iconic part of American culture and history,
hold on tight for this irresistible, one-of-a-kind journey into
motorcycling.
After VE Day in 1945 the British population returned
enthusiastically to the road. But the cost and availability of both
vehicles and fuel led to the post-war scene being dominated by
motorcycles, most of them ex-military machines, eagerly snapped up
for everyday use in an age when a family car remained just a dream
for many. The British industry, meanwhile, was exhorted to 'export
or die', and until well into the 1950s the majority of new British
bikes were sold abroad. During this period, the industry - the
largest and most important in the world - continued to develop new
and exciting machines. Mick Walker tells the story of the British
post-war motorcycle during this golden age of the industry. With
the help of archive photographs and advertising material, this book
conjures up a lost age of the British bike, of journeys to work by
popping two-strokes, and trips to the seaside in the family
motorcycle combination.

Considering that Coventry was the birthplace of the British cycle
industry, it is perhaps no surprise that the city became heavily
involved in the development of the British motor industry in the
mid-1890s. From the velocipedes built in the city in 1868, most of
the well-established cycle manufacturers quickly turned their
attention to motorized vehicles, and many of the early motoring
pioneers, including Humber, Triumph, and Coventry Eagle, moved to
Coventry to become part of this revolutionary work. Local firms
including Bayliss, Thomas & Co., Hillman, Riley, and Swift were
just a few of the cycle firms to catch on, and steadily, new
companies were formed solely to manufacture motorcycles. This book
covers the history of Coventry's motorcycle companies and their
products, focusing on the people who both founded and worked for
such firms. From world-famous companies like Triumph, to the more
obscure marques like Wartnaby and Draper, it provides a brief
summary of each manufacturer, as well as an insight into the social
history of Coventry at the peak of its involvement in motorcycle
history. It is sure to appeal to anyone interested in motorcycle
history and Coventry's industrial past.
Triumph Twins first burst onto the scene in 1938, and continued to
improve up to their demise in the 1980's. This book covers the
restoration of these classic and beloved machines, and is the only
one to do so. In full-colour format, it includes two
start-to-finish assemblies, with sidebars to explain how to
correctly lace a wheel, which metal coatings are correct for which
year, and other valuable information. Written by Triumph
restoration expert Gary Chitwood and well-known how-to author
Timothy Remus, all the projects are practical, clearly explained,
and fully illustrated - including the disassembly and restoration
of both a Bonneville 1963 and a Bonneville 1969, in complete
step-by-step stages with full illustrations, plus the overhaul and
assembly of an engine for the 1969 model. It may be good to have a
book that explains how to install a wheel in a frame, but how much
better is it when this is shown as well in full colour - the wheel
being slipped up between the fork legs and the axle sliding through
the fork and into the hub. With over 400 colour photos, this book
offers 144 pages of hard-core how-to help for anyone who wants to
repair or restore their own Triumph twin.
