No pianist can experience the full flowering of her art without
eventually grappling with those great musical minds who composed
specifically for piano. In The Pianist's Craft, Richard Anderson
collects from his fellow pianist-scholars 19 articles on the
teaching, preparation, and performance of works by the greatest
composers in the standard piano repertoire. This collection ranges
in subject matter from Inge Rosar's meditation on playing Bach on
the modern keyboard to Gary Amato's assessment of Haydn's sonatas,
from Christie Skousen's review of tone production in Chopin to
GwenolynMok's foray into recreating Ravel's works on an Erard
piano, the same used by Ravel himself. Readers will find essays as
well on Mozart's piano compositions, Beethoven's sonatas, the
influence of Schubert's lieder on his piano works, and works by
Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin,
Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Bartok, Gershwin, and Crumb. The
contributors all recognized nationally and internationally for
their contributions as performing artists, teachers, recording
artists, and clinicians write thoughtfully about the composers
whose work they have studied and played for years. Each author
addresses issues unique to the individual composer they have chosen
to explore, examining questions of phrasing, tempo, articulation,
dynamics, rhythm, color, gesture, lyricism, instrumentation, and
genre. Valuable insight is provided into teaching, performing, and
preparing these great works. In The Pianist's Craft these great
artists and teachers answer questions for readers that are
otherwise only addressed in conferences, master classes, and
private lessons. In this collection of essays, key points of
information and instruction are offered with over 200 musical
examples included as illustration. The Pianist's Craft is intended
for teachers and students of the intermediate and advanced levels
of piano, instructors and performers at the university level, and
those who love piano and piano music generally.

Dance Music Spaces: Clubs, Clubbers, and DJs Navigating
Authenticity, Branding, and Commercialism is about the production
of social, cultural, physical, and digital spaces in dance music,
spaces that share features of both rave authenticity and the
commercialism of club culture. Using a concept she calls
authenticity maneuvering to explain how clubs, clubbers, and DJs
navigate authenticity, branding, and commercialism, Danielle
Hidalgo argues that the strategic use of a rave ethos bolsters
acceptance in dance music spaces while also making commercial
practices less visible or problematic. She shows how the presence
of both authenticity and commercialism enables and constrains three
highly successful women DJs and their colleagues, requiring the
ongoing performance of authenticity via branding. This book
presents a compelling analysis of the complicated interplay between
dancing bodies, digital practices, and spatial offerings in
contemporary dance music.
Electronic Dance Music: From Deviant Subculture to Culture Industry
explores the subculture's emergence as a deviant subculture. This
text analyzes how industry professionals, fans, and public
officials helped usher in a new age of EDM, arguing that while the
defining features of the subculture made it attractive, they also
laid the foundations for outsiders to commodify the movement as a
culture industry. Conner and Dickens explore the concept of
"commodified resistance" as the mechanism by which the movement's
politically dissident features were removed and its place as a
multi-billion-dollar industry made possible. Ultimately, this text
advocates the continued utility of the culture industry thesis
through an empirical analysis of the EDM subculture.
Schubert's Workshop offers a fresh study of the composer's
compositional technique and its development, rooted in the author's
experience of realising performing versions of Franz Schubert's
unfinished works. Through close examination of Schubert's use of
technical and structural devices, Brian Newbould demonstrates that
Schubert was much more technically innovative than has been
supposed, and argues that the composer's technical discoveries
constitute a rich legacy of specific influences on later composers.
Providing rich new insights into the creative practice of one of
the major figures of classical music, this two-volume study
reframes our understanding of Schubert as an innovator who
constantly pushed at the frontiers of style and expression.
The Brazilian "berimbau," a musical bow, is most commonly
associated with the energetic martial art/dance/game of "capoeira."
This study explores the berimbau's stature from the 1950s to the
present in diverse musical genres including bossa nova,
samba-reggae, MPB (Popular Brazilian Music), electronic dance
music, Brazilian art music, and more. Berimbau music spans oral and
recorded historical traditions, connects Latin America to Africa,
juxtaposes the sacred and profane, and unites nationally
constructed notions of Brazilian identity across seemingly
impenetrable barriers.
"The Berimbau: Soul of Brazilian Music" is the first work that
considers the berimbau beyond the context of capoeira, and explores
the bow's emergence as a national symbol. Throughout, this book
engages and analyzes intersections of musical traditions in the
Black Atlantic, North American popular music, and the rise of
global jazz. This book is an accessible introduction to Brazilian
music for musicians, Latin American scholars, capoeira
practitioners, and other people who are interested in Brazil's
music and culture.
While interpretation of musical scores is amongst the most frequent
of musical activities, it is also, strangely, one of the least
researched. This collection of essays seeks to remedy this deficit
by illuminating ways in which today's curious musician - interested
in probing beyond the dictates of a faintly understood score - can
engage more deeply and thoughtfully with the act of interpretation.
Skilful musical interpretation draws on a vast range of knowledges.
The chapters of this collection accordingly address a similarly
broad set of issues, including notation, rhetoric, theory,
historiography, performers past and present, instrument builders,
concert presenters, reception history, and more. Written by leading
experts from a variety of musical subdisciplines, these essays are
designed to be accessible and practically relevant for musical
performance. Many of the chapters utilize case studies and, as
such, will be useful for university and conservatory level students
as well as music scholars. The chapters in this book were
originally published as a special issue of the Journal of
Musicological Research.
The violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) is considered among the
most influential performers in history and still maintains a strong
following among violinists around the world. Dario Sarlo
contributes significantly to the growing field of analytical
research into recordings and the history of performance style.
Focussing on Heifetz and his under-acknowledged but extensive
performing relationship with the Bach solo violin works (BWV
1001-1006), Sarlo examines one of the most successful performing
musicians of the twentieth century along with some of the most
frequently performed works of the violin literature. The book
proposes a comprehensive method for analysing and interpreting the
legacies of prominent historical performers in the wider context of
their particular performance traditions. The study outlines this
research framework and addresses how it can be transferred to
related studies of other performers. By building up a comprehensive
understanding of multiple individual performance styles, it will
become possible to gain deeper insight into how performance style
develops over time. The investigation is based upon eighteen months
of archival research in the Library of Congress's extensive Jascha
Heifetz Collection. It draws on numerous methods to examine what
and how Heifetz played, why he played that way, and how that way of
playing compares to other performers. The book offers much insight
into the 'music industry' between 1915 and 1975, including touring,
programming, audiences, popular and professional reception and
recording. The study concludes with a discussion of Heifetz's
unique performer profile in the context of violin performance
history.

(Bass Method). Bass for Kids is a fun, easy course that teaches
children to play bass guitar faster than ever before. Popular songs
such as "Crazy Train," "Every Breath You Take," "A Hard Day's
Night" and "Wild Thing" keep kids motivated, and the clean, simple
page layouts ensure their attention remains focused on one concept
at a time. The method can be used in combination with a bass
teacher or parent, even if they've never had any musical training
themselves. Lesson topics include selecting a bass, holding the
bass, hand position, reading music notation and counting, and more.
A group of resourceful kids start "solution-seekers.com," a website
where "cybervisitors" can get answers to questions that trouble
them. But when one questioner asks the true meaning of Christmas,
the kids seek to unravel the mystery by journeying back through the
prophecies of the Old Testament. What they find is a series of "S"
words that reveal a "spectacular story!" With creative characters,
humorous dialogue and great music, The "S" Files is a children's
Christmas musical your kids will love performing.
This is the first biography of the jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan
(1938-72). He was a prodigy: recruited to Dizzy Gillespie's big
band while still a teenager, joining Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers
not much after, by his early-20s Morgan had played on four
continents and dozens of albums. The trumpeter would go on to
cultivate a personal and highly influential style, and to make
records - most notably, The Sidewinder - which would sell amounts
almost unheard of in jazz. While what should have been Morgan's
most successful years were hampered by a heroin addiction, the
ascendant black liberation movement of the late-60s gave the
musician a new, political impulse, and he returned to the jazz
scene to become a vociferous campaigner for black musicians' rights
and representation. But Morgan's personal life remained troubled,
and during a fight with his girlfriend at a New York club, he was
shot and killed, aged 33. Although Lee Morgan lived and died in
sensational style, the story told in this book doesn't just stumble
between stages, studios, bars and needles; such a narrative
couldn't do justice to the richness of the trumpeter's music, nor
to the culture from which it came. Here, then, the events of
Morgan's life are presented not just as items of biography, but
also as points of departure for wider historical investigations
that aim to situate the musician and his contemporaries in changing
aesthetic, social and economic contexts. The work draws on many
original interviews with Morgan's colleagues and friends, as well
as extensive archival research and critical engagement with the
music itself.
With Contemporary Piano: A Performer and Composer's Guide to
Techniques and Resources, Alan Shockley provides a comprehensive
resource for composers writing music that uses extended techniques
for the piano, and for pianists interested in playing repertoire
that makes use of techniques and/or implements unfamiliar to them.
Shockley explains dozens of ways to prepare a piano without
damaging the instrument, how to notate every standard technique and
many, many obscure ones, and the specific geographies of every
common concert hall piano. This will be the standard reference for
pianists touring and playing inside-the-piano repertoire, and for
composers at all levels of familiarity with the piano hoping to
understand the mechanical miracle that is the modern piano.
