Home Birth - The Politics of Difficult Choices (Paperback, New): Mary L. Nolan Home Birth - The Politics of Difficult Choices (Paperback, New)
Mary L. Nolan
R1,087 Discovery Miles 10 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The rhetoric of choice is much used in UK health policy and home birth is one of the three options that women are entitled to choose between when deciding where to have their baby. However, many women making this choice run into considerable opposition from the maternity service. Home Birth: the politics of difficult choices focuses on the experiences of women whose choices were opposed by health professionals during their pregnancy journey. It confronts why and how women are being denied home birth and raises some challenging issues for current midwifery practice. Using ten women's narratives, this important volume explores why women might want to give birth at home and considers ideas of risk and informed choice in pregnancy and birth. The book includes chapters on communication and language; fear and stress; advocacy and autonomy; fathers' experience of contested place of birth and free birthing. Pointers to best practice are presented whilst the text incorporates women's narratives throughout, making this a practical and relevant read for midwifery students as well as practising midwives and childbirth educators, all of whom have a duty to make home birth a real option for women.

Perinatology - Evidence-Based Best Practices in Perinatal Medicine (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Renato Augusto Moreira De Sa,... Perinatology - Evidence-Based Best Practices in Perinatal Medicine (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Renato Augusto Moreira De Sa, Eduardo Borges da Fonseca
R5,505 Discovery Miles 55 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents the latest evidence-based guidelines for perinatal management and is designed to help obstetricians and neonatologists minimize complications and offer patients the best possible care. Since 1960, there has been a significant increase in basic and clinical investigations on normal and pathological pregnancy in the developed world. This has provided insights into the physiopathology of pregnant women, fetuses and newborns and led to the development of new technologies, bringing about a new medical subspecialty: perinatal medicine. The book is divided into eight main sections: The first examines basic periconceptional care and discusses the ethical aspects of perinatology. The next section focuses on prenatal considerations, such as the nutritional aspects of gestation and puerperium, physical exercise during pregnancy, routine laboratory tests, prenatal care of multiple gestations and the role of the neonatologist in prenatal care. The third and fourth sections then explore fetal evaluation, and clinical intercurrences in pregnancy, respectively. The next section addresses pregnancy complications: prevention, diagnosis and management. The sixth section covers the basic aspects of congenital infections and the seventh examines labor and delivery aspects. Lastly, the final section includes chapters on neonatal assistance. Written by leading experts in obstetrics, neonatology, and perinatology, this thoroughly updated, comprehensive resource reflects the latest information in all areas, including genetics and imaging.

Caesarean - Just Another Way of Birth? (Paperback, New Ed): Rosemary Mander Caesarean - Just Another Way of Birth? (Paperback, New Ed)
Rosemary Mander
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book critically analyzes the place of caesarean in childbearing at the beginning of the twenty first century. It questions the changes that are taking place in childbirth and, in particular, the effects and implications of an increase in caesarean births.

This controversial work by a practising midwife and researcher, includes discussion of:

  • the context of the operation and description of it
  • health systems around the world and their caesarean incidence rates
  • decision-making and cultural/medical constraints
  • the short and long term implications of caesarean for baby and mother.

Using up-to-date research, Rosemary Mander bases her argument on a firm evidence-base and argues that the rapidly rising caesarean section rate may not be for the benefit of either the woman giving birth or her baby. Rather, the beneficiaries may actually be those professionals whose investment is in extending the range of theirinfluence and thus increasing the medicalization of normal life.

Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy - Clinical and Theoretical Perspectives (Paperback): Bjoern Salomonsson Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy - Clinical and Theoretical Perspectives (Paperback)
Bjoern Salomonsson
R1,154 Discovery Miles 11 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy builds on Bjoern Salomonsson's experiences as a psychoanalytic consultant working with parents and their babies. Emotional problems during the perinatal stages can arise and be observed and addressed by a skilled midwife, nurse or health visitor. Salomonsson has developed a method combining nurse supervision and therapeutic consultations which has lowered the thresholds for parents to come and talk with him. The brief consultations concern pregnant women, mother and baby, husband and wife, toddler and parent. The theoretical framework is psychoanalytic, but the mode of work is eclectic and adapted to the family's situation and its members' motivation. This book details such work, which can be applied globally; perinatal psychotherapy integrated with ordinary medical health care. It also explains how psychotherapy can be made more accessible to a larger population. Via detailed case presentations, the author takes the reader through pregnancy, childbirth and the first few years of life. He also brings in research studies emphasizing the importance of early interventions, with the aim of providing therapists with arguments for such work in everyday family health care. To further substantiate such arguments, the book ends with theoretical chapters and, finally, the author's vision of the future of a perinatal health care that integrates medical and psychological perspectives. Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy will appeal to all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists working in this area, as well as clinical psychologists, clinical social workers and medical personnel working with parents and infants.

A Guide to Supporting Breastfeeding for the Medical Profession (Hardcover): Amy Brown, Wendy Jones A Guide to Supporting Breastfeeding for the Medical Profession (Hardcover)
Amy Brown, Wendy Jones
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a practical guide for medical practitioners as they navigate through breastfeeding problems that occur in day-to-day practice. If mothers have a breastfeeding complication they are often directed to their GP. In complex situations, medical staff will be making decisions around what treatment plan to follow and whether a mother can keep breastfeeding. In recent years there has been growing evidence that medical professionals often advise mothers to stop breastfeeding while undergoing treatment, when in reality this was not a necessary step. In a time when breastfeeding rates are decreasing, it is important that medical professionals give accurate advice and support a mother's choice to breastfeed if the situation allows it. A Guide to Supporting Breastfeeding for the Medical Profession includes contributions from a wide range of medical professionals and each chapter is written with the practitioner in mind. Contributors include GPs, paediatricians, neonatologists, lactation specialists and midwives. Doctors have a vital role to play in supporting and facilitating breastfeeding, and without the appropriate knowledge they can often inadvertently sabotage it. This book will be of interest to GPs and paediatricians as well as nurse prescribers, midwives and health visitors.

Thomas H. Strong Jr
R971 Discovery Miles 9 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

While the general understanding of prenatal care as crucial to the wellbeing of mothers and their babies is now enshrined in American culutre, Strong draws upon scientific research to show that few procedures are as helpful as we think, aiming to dispel misconceptions about prenatal care. Nurturing the Premature Infant - Developmental Interventions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (Hardcover): Edward Goldson Nurturing the Premature Infant - Developmental Interventions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (Hardcover)
Edward Goldson
R1,894 Discovery Miles 18 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As more premature infants survive the immediate neonatal period and require prolonged periods of hospitalization, researchers in fetal development and infancy have begun to reassess the strategies for their care. In the past, the focus of neonatal intensive care was to sustain life, with little attention to the quality and implications of survival. Today, however, researchers and clinicians are seeking to enhance the development of these small infants by ameliorating the effects of extreme prematurity and the associated medical and surgical complications. This book reports the work of leading researchers who have begun to use a variety of developmental interventions in the management of small infants in neonatal intensive care units.

Helping Low Birth Weight, Premature Babies - The Infant Health and Development Program (Hardcover, Twenty-Third): Ruth T.... Helping Low Birth Weight, Premature Babies - The Infant Health and Development Program (Hardcover, Twenty-Third)
Ruth T. Gross, Donna Spiker, Christine W. Haynes
R3,273 Discovery Miles 32 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Each year in the United States, 250,000 infants are born too soon, weighing too little. For these low birth weight, premature infants, the future is uncertain, since they are at risk for a variety of serious medical and developmental problems--including behavioral and learning disorders that may have damaging effects for the rest of their lives. The extent to which a comprehensive early intervention program could improve or prevent these adverse outcomes was examined in the Infant Health and Development Program, a randomized controlled trial involving almost 1,000 infants in eight cities in the United States. This book describes in detail the program, its research methodology, the progress of the program, and the results of the clinical trial.
The program was administered by an interdisciplinary team composed of physicians, biostatisticians, child development specialists, and researchers from several disciplines. It was instituted upon the discharge of the infants from the neonatal nursery and was maintained for three years. One-third of the infants were randomly assigned to an intervention group, the remainder to a follow-up group. Infants in both groups received pediatric care and community referral services, but only those in the intervention group participated in a program that included extensive home visits, attendance at a child development center, and group meetings for parents.
The results of the program proved to be clinically important; at age three, the children in the intervention group had significantly higher IQ scores, greater cognitive development, and fewer behavioral problems. The implications of the findings for public policy are equally important, for there is increasing interest in the prevention, early detection, and management of developmental disabilities in children, as evidenced by such legislation as the Education for All Children Act. Strategies to minimize the problems of low birth weight children, with their potential for long-term savings through the prevention of disabilities and their attendant costs, could have significant repercussions in such governmental areas as medical care, education, and social welfare.

Phenomenology of the Newborn - Life from Womb to World (Paperback): Michael van Manen Phenomenology of the Newborn - Life from Womb to World (Paperback)
Michael van Manen
R1,394 Discovery Miles 13 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many children spend their first days, weeks, and sometimes months in a neonatal intensive care unit as a consequence of prematurity, congenital anomalies, or birth complications. Their medical needs are thoughtfully appraised and attended to, yet some questions are rarely asked: What experiences do these newborns have? What experiences are we giving them? How can we and do we understand what their lives are like? What are the interventions and actions of medical care actually like for them? Michael van Manen explores the experiential life of newborn infants with particular consideration for those newborns who require medical care. Drawing on contemporary research findings from physiology, psychology, biology, and other disciplines, he offers phenomenological insights and raises thought-provoking questions as to how we ought to understand and care for such young children. In our contemporary world, it is often the experiences of inception, of first contact, with those who seem most distant, foreign, or even alien that we need to try to apprehend and understand. The inceptual lives of newborn infants challenges us to explore those experiences phenomenologically - to investigate the originary meanings of early life experiences. Phenomenology of the Newborn is an essential text for researchers seeking to employ phenomenology for the study of neonatal life and related concerns that may seem inaccessible to other more traditional qualitative and quantitative methods.

Care Coordination in the NICU - Implementing Family-Centered Nursing Care for Optimal Outcomes (Paperback): Sara L. Mosher Care Coordination in the NICU - Implementing Family-Centered Nursing Care for Optimal Outcomes (Paperback)
Sara L. Mosher
R1,602 R1,269 Discovery Miles 12 690 Save R333 (21%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Focuses on nurturing the emotional health of patients and families to ensure improved outcomes. This innovative clinical practice resource for neonatal nurses embodies family-centered care strategies for optimal outcomes through every phase of the NICU experience. While rigorous programs provide the knowledge and skills to care for the physical needs of high-risk mothers and neonates, NICU practitioners often find themselves unprepared to support the emotional health of these patients and their families. Care Coordination in the NICU provides the education, inspiration, and resources to NICU health professionals so they can learn how to be emotionally supportive to their patient's entire family unit. The book addresses a variety of challenging patient and family issues that occur in the NICU as they relate to care coordination throughout the process. Each chapter focuses on a particular area of the perinatal/neonatal family journey, and includes current medical research, clinical examples, and recommendations for best practice alongside case studies that depict families experiencing a perinatal challenge. Most valuable of all, each chapter also includes stories directly from the source, the families, who have experienced the fear, isolation, and uncertainly of an NICU experience, and have greatly benefited from the emotional support of caring practitioners. Key Features: Examines the gamut of challenging patient and family issues that occur in the NICU as they relate to care coordination throughout the process Helps practitioners to incorporate family-centered care into their daily practices Discusses effective listening and communication strategies for families in crisis Includes examples of practice improvement strategies to improve clinical outcome and reduce the risk of re-hospitalization Provides a Case-Based Learning section depicting real-world scenarios for discussion and problem-solving Includes links to abundant resources and educational material Contains chapters on palliative care and bereavement and supporting patients with special challenges.

Women's Health in Africa - Issues, Challenges and Opportunities (Hardcover): Chimaraoke Izugbara, Eleanor Covan, Elizabeth... Women's Health in Africa - Issues, Challenges and Opportunities (Hardcover)
Chimaraoke Izugbara, Eleanor Covan, Elizabeth Fugate-Whitlock
R4,688 Discovery Miles 46 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited book includes new policy-relevant research on women's health issues in Africa. Scholars explore critical topics from different disciplinary traditions using a variety of research methodologies and data sources. The contributors include African scholars with in-depth knowledge of their home contexts, who can furnish nuanced interpretations of local health issues and trends; international researchers who bring vigorous comparative viewpoints; emerging scholars adding to scientific knowledge; and more established researchers with a deep global knowledge of women's health issues. The range of women's health issues is vast, including the HIV epidemic and its impacts; domestic violence; the persistence of homebirths; and abortion. In addition, the book investigates emerging health concerns such as CVDs and cancers. Readers will learn that, while old health issues have persisted and assumed new dimensions, newer concerns have materialized and are now gaining momentum. The inability of health systems to tackle these issues complicates matters in Africa, creating a sense of desperation that can only be successfully confronted through strong political will and strategic planning, grounded in further research. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Health Care for Women International.

Reproductive Losses - Challenges to LGBTQ Family-Making (Hardcover): Christa Craven Reproductive Losses - Challenges to LGBTQ Family-Making (Hardcover)
Christa Craven
R4,079 Discovery Miles 40 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although there are far more opportunities for LGBTQ people to become parents than there were before the 1990s, attention to the reproductive challenges LGBTQ families face has not kept pace. Reproductive Losses considers LGBTQ people's experiences with miscarriage, stillbirth, failed adoptions, infertility, and sterility. Drawing on Craven's training as a feminist anthropologist and her experiences as a queer parent who has experienced loss, Reproductive Losses includes detailed stories drawn from over fifty interviews with LGBTQ people (including those who carried pregnancies, non-gestational and adoptive parents, and families from a broad range of racial/ethnic, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds) to consider how they experience loss, grief, and mourning. The book includes productive suggestions and personal narratives of resiliency, commemorative strategies, and communal support, while also acknowledging the adversity many LGBTQ people face as they attempt to form families and the heteronormativity of support resources for those who have experienced reproductive loss. This is essential reading for scholars and professionals interested in LGBTQ health and family, and for individuals in LGBTQ communities who have experienced loss and those who support them. Jill E. Boulton, Kevin Coughlin, Debra O'Flaherty, Alfonso Solimano
R3,545 Discovery Miles 35 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns (ACoRN) program trains health care providers to stabilize that most challenging and enigmatic of medical patients: the unwell newborn. Early assessment, intervention, and management of at-risk or unstable infants can be critical for their survival and long-term health. Clinical care standards and educational programs to address these requirements are needed. The ACoRN program provides a unique, prioritized, and systematic approach to newborn stabilization for health care professionals with any degree of experience. ACoRN-trained providers learn to gather information, prioritize, intervene appropriately, and deliver high-quality care to at-risk and unwell newborns in any setting. Because research and practice have advanced dramatically in recent years, the need for a new ACoRN text, the program's centrepiece, became essential. Hence the development of this new edition, which reflects current guidelines and evidence-based best practices. ACoRN teaches the concepts and skills required to stabilize unwell newborns through system-based algorithms ('Sequences'), each with its own chapter: - Respiratory - Fluid and Glucose - Cardiovascular - Jaundice - Neurology - Thermoregulation - Surgical Conditions - Infection Each chapter includes educational objectives, key concepts, learning points, and at least one case scenario with questions and answers to reinforce content and learnings. Chapters describing newborn transition, the ACoRN process, supportive care, and safe transport round out the systems-based core. This book is written for any health professional who may be required to participate in the stabilization of sick or preterm babies within their scope of practice.
