C. Michael Hall, Dallen J. Timothy, David Timothy Duval
R6,005 Discovery Miles 60 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How will the travel and tourism industry respond to the terrorist attacks on America? The recent terrorist attacks in the United States and their repercussions for the travel and leisure industries have focused more attention on tourism safety and security issues than ever before. The impact on tourism destinations and businesses, as well as on traveler behavior, will be significant. Recent events require further analysis not only of how travel safety may be improved but also how security issues may be seen in terms of tourism marketing and management so that the industry is able to better respond to such challenges. In this, an era of turbulent global relationships, the need for destination marketing organizations to demonstrate that they are safe for tourists has become increasingly important. Negative publicity, often unrelated to on-the-ground reality, may also serve to affect tourist perceptions.Safety and Security in Tourism: Relationships, Management, and Marketing examines: the effects of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the tourism industry and how the industry is responding the importance of safety as a factor in destination or activity choice case studies of destination and business responses to past political instability and/or attacks against tourists safety, security and destination image the role of the media in influencing consumer perceptions of travel safety consumer awareness of travel advisories and their influence on behavior the role of insurance in the travel industry consumer awareness and acceptance of security measures in travel and tourism safety and security as a component in destination marketing crisis and risk management in the tourism industry cross-border security and visa controls and their implications for tourism safety and security measures for tourists in different sectors and in airportsTourism has often been cited as a force for peace, yet tourism is typically one of the first industrial casualties of war and political unrest. This book examines tourism safety and security issues to give you a better knowledge base from which to respond to future events.

The Blame Machine: Why Human Error Causes Accidents - Why Human Error Causes Accidents (Paperback): Robert Whittingham The Blame Machine: Why Human Error Causes Accidents - Why Human Error Causes Accidents (Paperback)
Robert Whittingham
R1,754 Discovery Miles 17 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Blame Machine describes how disasters and serious accidents result from recurring, but potentially avoidable, human errors. It shows how such errors are preventable because they result from defective systems within a company. From real incidents, you will be able to identify common causes of human error and typical system deficiencies that have led to these errors. On a larger scale, you will be able to see where, in the organisational or management systems, failure occurred so that you can avoid them.
The book also describes the existence of a 'blame culture' in many organisations, which focuses on individual human error whilst ignoring the system failures that caused it. The book shows how this 'blame culture' has, in the case of a number of past accidents, dominated the accident enquiry process hampering a proper investigation of the underlying causes.
Suggestions are made about how progress can be made to develop a more open culture in organisations, both through better understanding of human error by managers and through increased public awareness of the issues. The book brings together documentary evidence from recent major incidents from all around the world and within the Rail, Water, Aviation, Shipping, Chemical and Nuclear industries.
Barry Whittingham has worked as a senior manager, design engineer and consultant for the chemical, nuclear, offshore oil and gas, railway and aviation sectors. He developed a career as a safety consultant specializing in the human factors aspects of accident causation. He is a member of the Human Factors in Reliability Group, and a Fellow of the Safety and Reliability Society.
* Increases safety by showing how to remove blameand how to develop foolproof safety systems
* Draws together documentary evidence of real accidents to demonstrate the different types of human error, and preventative actions
* Covers a range of disciplines - occupational psychology, engineering, safety of major installations

Workplace Drug Abuse and AIDS - A Guide to Human Resource Management Policy and Practice (Hardcover, New): Donald Klingner,... Workplace Drug Abuse and AIDS - A Guide to Human Resource Management Policy and Practice (Hardcover, New)
Donald Klingner, Nancy G. O'Neill
R2,688 Discovery Miles 26 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Throughout the 1980s, the issue of substance abuse testing became increasingly important to employers. And now the growing problem of AIDS and its impact on the workplace provides a related area of concern. In this work, Donald Klingner tells human resource professionals what they need to know about both these topics. The book carefully details the effects these problems have on employers, and provides specific recommendations for human resource management policy and practice which can reduce the employer's costs and legal liability risks while preserving employee rights.

Following a general introduction that lays the foundation for the discussion, the book is divided into two main sections. The first addresses the intricacies of substance abuse and testing, presenting six chapters that survey substance abuse in the workplace; substance abuse testing techniques; substance abuse testing and the law; personnel policies and practices; employee assistance programs; and working with employees and unions. The second section covers the issue of AIDS and AIDS testing through four chapters: AIDS in the workplace; AIDS testing techniques; AIDS testing and the law; and personnel policies and practices. A concluding chapter provides a summary of both areas. This work will be a valuable reference tool for public and private-sector managers--supervisors, managers, trainers and personnel specialists--responsible for developing or implementing substance abuse or AIDS policy and practice. Public, college and university libraries will also find it a timely addition to their collections.

Trevor Kletz
R3,205 Discovery Miles 32 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Review of previous edition:
"Trevor Kletz's book makes an invaluable contribution to the systematic, professional and scientific approach to accident investigation." The Chemical Engineer

Fully revised and updated, the third edition of Learning from Accidents provides more information on accident investigation, including coverage of accidents involving liquefied gases, building collapse and other incidents that have occurred because faults were invisible (e.g. underground pipelines).
By analysing accidents that have occurred Trevor Kletz shows how we can learn and thus be better able to prevent accidents happening again. Looking at a wide range of incidents, covering the process industries, nuclear industry and transportation, he analyses each accident in a practical and non-theoretical fashion and summarises each with a chain of events showing the prevention and mitigation which could have occurred at every stage.
At all times Learning from Accidents, 3rd Edition emphasises cause and prevention rather than human interest or cleaning up the mess. Anyone involved in accident investigation and reporting of whatever sort and all those who work in industry, whether in design, operations or loss prevention will find this book full of invaluable guidance and advice.
Completely up-dated.
Shows, by analysing accidents that have occurred, how we can learn from them, and prevent the same accidents happening again.

Safety at the Sharp End - A Guide to Non-Technical Skills (Paperback, New Ed): Rhona Flin, Paul O'Connor Safety at the Sharp End - A Guide to Non-Technical Skills (Paperback, New Ed)
Rhona Flin, Paul O'Connor
R1,482 Discovery Miles 14 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Many 21st century operations are characterised by teams of workers dealing with significant risks and complex technology, in competitive, commercially-driven environments. Informed managers in such sectors have realised the necessity of understanding the human dimension to their operations if they hope to improve production and safety performance. While organisational safety culture is a key determinant of workplace safety, it is also essential to focus on the non-technical skills of the system operators based at the 'sharp end' of the organisation. These skills are the cognitive and social skills required for efficient and safe operations, often termed Crew Resource Management (CRM) skills. In industries such as civil aviation, it has long been appreciated that the majority of accidents could have been prevented if better non-technical skills had been demonstrated by personnel operating and maintaining the system. As a result, the aviation industry has pioneered the development of CRM training. Many other organisations are now introducing non-technical skills training, most notably within the healthcare sector. Safety at the Sharp End is a general guide to the theory and practice of non-technical skills for safety. It covers the identification, training and evaluation of non-technical skills and has been written for use by individuals who are studying or training these skills on CRM and other safety or human factors courses. The material is also suitable for undergraduate and post-experience students studying human factors or industrial safety programmes.

Management of Hazardous Agents - Volume 2: Social, Political, and Policy Aspects (Hardcover, New): Duane G. LeVine, Arthur C.... Management of Hazardous Agents - Volume 2: Social, Political, and Policy Aspects (Hardcover, New)
Duane G. LeVine, Arthur C. Upton
R2,150 Discovery Miles 21 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, along with its companion volume, discusses the research needs, institutional modifications, and legislative changes that must be addressed to deal more effectively with the risks of hazardous materials. Prominent among the research needs is the necessity to assess the health effects of low-level exposure to toxicants. For none of these agents (lead, mercury, radiation, PCDDs, dioxins, PCBs, pesticides) is the existing toxicological data sufficient to define unambiguously the dose-effect relationship in the low-dose domain. Another uncertainty is our ignorance of how individuals within the human population may vary in susceptibility to the agents because of differences in genetic background, age, sex, diet, health status and exposure to extraneous environmental influences. Also identified among the research needs are methods for improving the technology of waste disposal, waste reduction, and waste recycling. Institutional changes necessary are the commitment to long-term, pro-active, prevention-oriented objectives; institutional mechanisms to achieve better consistency and coordination among different agencies; improvement in the reliability, credibility, and effectiveness with which institutions communicate risk-assessments and risk-management policies; and provision for more adequate education and training of all who must be involved. Finally, the need for certain legislative changes is considered, including better use of incentives, such as taxation and price support mechanisms; better use of enforcement provisions; statutes that address cross-media patterns of human exposure; and greater federal-state-local coordination in risk-assessment and risk-management activities.

Medical Management of Radiation Accidents (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Kenneth S. Cohen Medical Management of Radiation Accidents (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Kenneth S. Cohen; Edited by Igor Gusev, Angelina Guskova, Fred A. Mettler
R7,166 Discovery Miles 71 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although radiation accidents are rare and often complex in nature, they are of great concern not only to the patient and involved medical staff, but to the media and public as well. Yet there are few if any comprehensive publications on the medical management of radiation accidents. Medical Management of Radiation Accidents provides a complete reference for those concerned with radiation accidents nationally as well as abroad.

Substantially different from the first edition, which dealt predominantly with radiation accident experiences in the United States, this updated and revised Second Edition represents an international cooperative effort that reflects current international approaches and experiences related to the medical management of radiation accidents. It is organized into areas that include:

o the fundamental aspects, medical characteristics, and classification of radiation accidents
o aspects of radiation on the entire body and specific tissues
o the history of accidents throughout the world
o a general overview of certain types of accidents with specific examples
o a follow-up of persons accidentally exposed to radiation with considerations related to epidemiological studies and a few selected examples
o radiation protection and dosimetry issues, psychological considerations, and accidental exposure of pregnant females.

The majority of this text is a Russian-United States effort; however, it includes work from authors from Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Japan, and Peru.

Air Sampling and Industrial Hygiene Engineering (Hardcover): Martha J. Boss, Dennis W. Day Air Sampling and Industrial Hygiene Engineering (Hardcover)
Martha J. Boss, Dennis W. Day
R3,476 Discovery Miles 34 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

We know certain chemicals cause problems in the workplace. The issues now are: Where do they occur in the workplace? How can we best evaluate them? What are the procedures for dealing with them safely? Many books simply define the problem and tell you that you need a program. Air Sampling and Industrial Hygiene gives you a guide to air sampling protocols from start to finish.
The book presents sampling technology updated with today's tools - such as microcircuitry and remote sensing. The authors emphasize an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how air monitoring can adequately report current environmental conditions associated with outdoor media, indoor remediation efforts, proximal equipment, interior line monitoring, and the interrelationship of ventilation parameters.
In addition to providing the how-tos of sampling, this guide covers the basics of chemical risk assessment, biological assessment, engineering evaluation of mechanical system design criteria, and chemical or process engineering hazard assessments. It presents the information using text, text outlines, graphics, and pictures - including cross sections of instrumentation and side bars to elaborate on complex concepts.
Faulty readings caused by poor sampling techniques can be very costly. This book provides the how-tos for making design engineering and on-site decisions as to instrumentation selection and scheduled usage. Air Sampling and Industrial Hygiene Engineering will allow you to complete the sampling process systematically and correctly from initial suspicions to the use of obtained results.

Healthy and Productive Work - An International Perspective (Hardcover): Lawrence R. Murphy, Cary Cooper Healthy and Productive Work - An International Perspective (Hardcover)
Lawrence R. Murphy, Cary Cooper
R3,604 Discovery Miles 36 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Enterprise Culture of the 1980s helped transform economies of Western Europe, but left behind a legacy of stress, both for managers and shop floor workers. The cost to business is seen in absenteeism, reduced productivity, compensation claims, health insurance and direct medical costs, which in the US cost approximately $150 billion a year. Stress related absences are about ten time more costly in the UK than all industrial relations disputes put together, and sickness absence, premature death and retirement due to alcoholism costs a staggering £2 billion a year.
The future is likely to get worse. As the pace of change increases and competition intensifies, organisations will restructure and the pressure on individual workers will increase. They can expect to feel less in control and more insecure in their work.
This major work includes a collection of good practice examples and has been drawn together in a structured way to allow clear comparisons of a number of companies in the USA and Europe, ranging from the US Air Force, to an international pharmaceutical company (Zeneca), and a high-powered international retailer (Marks and Spencer). Human resource and occupational health professionals should find this an enlightening work, full of good examples to help them create a healthy environment for their workforce.

Managing Health and Safety in Building and Construction (Paperback): Anthony Clarke Managing Health and Safety in Building and Construction (Paperback)
Anthony Clarke
R1,765 Discovery Miles 17 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Health and safety is important to everyone nowadays, especially with the burgeoning extent of legislation and regulations in the area both in UK terms but perhaps more importantly within and across the European Community. One of the industries most affected by this is the building and construction sector, which because of its traditionally poor record in this respect and its widespread and under-policed activities is now subject to the Construction, Design and Management (CDM) Regulations. These require that every project involving building or demolition work which is undertaken, regardless of the industry concerned and for what purpose, must be planned and documented according to these safety regulations and procedures. Non-compliance can attract heavy penalties, including fines and prison sentences.
In addition, the possibilities of actions like this, and their contingent financial costs, are beginning to determine a whole philosophy to underpin business management. It is therefore vital to understand exactly what legal obligations and duties are inherent in either managing, contracting or carrying out a given piece of work. Lack of knowledge of this nature can prove to be very costly, so this book will show you how to find your way around the maze of rules and regulations in order to improve your business efficiency and reduce exposure to financial risk.
Takes a management view of health and safety regulations and compliance
Latest developments and likely future directions covered
Case studies provide real-life examples

Preventing Stress, Improving Productivity - European Case-Studies in the Workplace (Paperback): Cary Cooper, Michiel Kompier Preventing Stress, Improving Productivity - European Case-Studies in the Workplace (Paperback)
Cary Cooper, Michiel Kompier
R1,149 Discovery Miles 11 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Changing the workplace to help prevent stress is much more cost effective in the long term than treating employees for the effects of stress. But to date, there has been little guidance for employers who wish to implement such programmes. This text has gathered together examples of best practice in the workplace across a range of EU countries and organizations. It explores the costs and benefits of stress prevention for workers and organizations and includes case studies, evaluations and reviews. It should be of value to occupational psychologists, consultants and managers across a wide range of work settings.
