In my twenty plus years in the education/sales/optometric/consulting worlds, I've noticed one fundamental challenge: staffing and retaining quality staff. Even when I was a green school teacher a million years ago, I quickly realized that my principal had the daunting task of finding incredible teachers and convincing them to stay in the educational field. Most administrators continually have to overcome those obstacles despite their best efforts. Understandably, many business owners either employ folks permanently (ala office manager) or hire folks specifically (ala consultant) to handle their hiring. Most folks just don't have time for it. But if you either can't afford to spend the money or if you would rather just save a few bucks, this book is intended to help you. In it, you'll find ideas ranging from where to find quality applicants to how to conduct efficient interviews to how to retain quality employees. We hope the book helps, and we hope you enjoy your business all the more because of it. Thanks for investing your valuable time into this book. We never take that for granted. Myopia. Optics. Clinical Presentation and Management (Hardcover): Dieudonne Kaimbo Wa Kaimbo Myopia. Optics. Clinical Presentation and Management (Hardcover)
Dieudonne Kaimbo Wa Kaimbo
R5,461 R4,889 Discovery Miles 48 890 Save R572 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Myopia is a common ocular condition affecting approximately 1.6 billion people worldwide. An increasing trend of myopia has been observed throughout the world and the prevalence of myopia is expected to increase to 2.5 billion by the year 2020. This book focuses on definition, mechanisms, optics, refraction, clinical presentation, complications and management of myopia in regards of recent advances. Myopia (nearsightedness) is a refractive error (ametropia) that occurs when parallel rays of light entering the non-accommodating eye are not focused on the retina. As a result, images of distant objects are focused in front of the retina and thus appear blurred. Myopia is the most common eyesight problem in the world and is often mild and there are no serious problems. However, it may sometimes lead to blindness. Myopia can be corrected with spherical lenses, contact lenses or with refractive surgery. The book gives an overview of myopia from definition, etiology to surgical treatment. Contents are based on recent findings published in the medical literature and reflect the most advanced achievements in current clinical and experimental research on myopia. This book presents relevant information that students, optometrists, orthoptists, ophthalmologists as well as scientists involved in clinical and basic research on myopia need to know about this important topic.

Color Psychology and Color Therapy - A Factual Study of the Influence of Color on Human Life (Paperback): Faber Birren Color Psychology and Color Therapy - A Factual Study of the Influence of Color on Human Life (Paperback)
Faber Birren
R528 Discovery Miles 5 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

2013 Reprint of 1950 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. American writer Faber Birren devoted his life to color and it's effects on human life. After writing around 25 texts on the topic, it would be safe to say his work is considered highly among color experts and psychologists around the world. Birren's work has a strong focus on linking how humans perceive colors to how it makes them react. He writes, "Good smelling colors are pink, lilac, orchid, cool green, aqua blue." Birren explores the work of several physicians, scientists and doctors, mainly the German psychoanalyst and physician Felix Deutsch, whose findings throw important light not only on medical practice with references to color but on the whole psychology of color. Birren states that if a person prefers warmer colors such as hues of red and oranges, they are likely to me more aware of their social environment. He labels these as "warm color dominant subjects." On the other hand, those preferring cooler colous such as blues and greens, are categorized generally as "cold color dominant subjects" and are recognized as finding it challenging to adapt themselves to new environments and situations." By splitting people into separate categories, based on their color preferences, Birren finds himself able to establish a greater understanding of their personalities and characteristics. One experiment Birren explores in his text, courtesy of Kurt Goldstein, involves a subject standing before a black wall with his eyes shut and arms outstretched to touch the wall in front. When the subject is influenced by a warm color such as the color red, his arms deviate away from each other, whereas when under the influence of a cooler colour such as green or blue, even though the reaction is a subtle one, the subject will move his arms closer together. I find this experiment, simple as it is, to be fascinating in highlighting the strong effects colors have on our minds and bodies. As well as distinguishing the differences in peoples' character through his use of color psychology, Birren also touches on the effects colors can have on the mentally ill. This section was the most interesting and involved a series of complex experiments such as discovering which neurological disorders were linked to which colors. Courtesy of the work by Hans Huber, it was proven that patients suffering manic tendencies preferred the color red, a symbol of blood and anger. Hysterical patients were more sensitive to green, "perhaps as an escape," the color linked to paranoid subjects was found to be brown and schizophrenics are sensitive to yellow. Birren states that persons troubled with "nervous (neurotic) and mental (psychotic) disturbances are greatly affected by color and are responsive to it." Therefore color becomes much more significant to them, and affects them in a completely different way than those without such neurological disturbances. Chapter 12 "Neurotics and Psychotics" is the most compelling in the text as it relates to my dissertation topic. After struggling to find texts specific to my research subject, this text and its contents came as a welcomed discovery and I will be referring to Birren's work throughout my further research.

Healing Glaucoma - Natural Medicine for Self-Healing (Paperback): Glen Swartwout Healing Glaucoma - Natural Medicine for Self-Healing (Paperback)
Glen Swartwout
R699 Discovery Miles 6 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Subtitled Natural Medicine for Self-Healing, this book is an encyclopedic study guide, a download of the compiled research and experience of an eye doctor with thirty years experience on the front lines of holistic medicine. Dr. Swartwout has even included specific remedy and source suggestions in this heavily expanded third edition. In depth coverage has been added of multiple areas that will be of interest to the inquiring clinician and even clinical researchers will find new perspectives worthy of investigation. The book draws on an extremely wide range of effective therapies from around the world including European Biological Medicine. Detailed coverage is now included on reversing AGE (Advanced Glycation Endproducts) as well as an eye opening perspective on antioxidants, a section on Excitotoxins, and some discussion of Dr. Swartwout's 5 Phases of Health model based on Bioelectronics of Vincent that measures the parameters necessary to both quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate biological energy (in microwatts) in a fluid milieu. Those factors boil down to protons, electrons and photons in the author's penetrating insight into biophysics. Without oversimplifying anything, the discussion is aimed at supporting those patients and practitioners who are serious about discovering what may be possible in the realm of actually healing the pathophysiology of glaucoma. "This book is a great contribution to the emerging paradigm of 21st century vision care. It provides a thorough review of many healing modalities in order to help a person's eye, body and soul heal the condition of glaucoma... A must for any patient or professional working with this condition. Dr. Swartwout is a pioneer in helping to regenerate our precious gift of sight." - Marc Grossman, O.D., L.Ac., co-author of Greater Vision and co-author of Natural Eye Care

Andrew Gasson, Judith Morris
R126 Discovery Miles 1 260 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

It follows the authors' own approach to patient management, initial assessment and lens selection as well as giving detailed fitting procedures for both basic and complex lenses. Significant space is allocated to aftercare as this is considered an inextricably linked continuation of fitting, whereas theoretical aspects have been kept deliberately concise, supplemented by detailed references and suggestions for further reading.;The introductory chapters and basic fitting are directed mainly at the student or practitioner without recent experience. "The Manual", however, also covers advanced fitting techniques for the more experienced and the specialist sections in therapeutic lenses and the management of children requiring contact lenses should be of interest both to hospital fitters and to those who encounter the occasional medical case.

The Secrets in Their Eyes - Transforming the Lives of People with Cognitive, Emotional, Learning, or Movement Disorders or Autism by Changing the Visual Software of the Brain (Paperback)
Melvin Kaplan; Foreword by Manuel Casanova
R758 Discovery Miles 7 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Vision therapy techniques can correct not only visual problems, but also cognitive, emotional and physical difficulties. Based on the pioneering work of Dr Melvin Kaplan, this research-based book explains the basis of vision therapy, who it can help, and the outcomes it can bring. Visual perceptual problems can cause an array of difficulties, from reading and writing, to issues with balance, clumsiness, and tunnel vision. Severe symptoms can lead to a diagnosis of anxiety, depression, learning disability or even autism. In this groundbreaking book, Dr Kaplan shows how these symptoms point to interventions that change the way that the eyes process information, permanently counteracting visual deficits and impacting on behaviour. Case studies demonstrate how to plan and implement visual management programs according to a patient's symptoms, illustrating the wide range of life-changing results that vision therapy can achieve for people of all ages, regardless of severity of symptoms. Dr Kaplan also shares his expert knowledge of ambient yoked prisms - a tool that transforms light to alter visual stimulation, dramatically transforming perception and cognition. This accessible book presents readers - including parents and families, clinicians, and other professionals working with individuals with visual perception problems - with a comprehensive introduction to the benefits and methods of vision therapy.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration - Prevalence, Risk Factors & Clinical Management (Hardcover): Melanie Carter Age-Related Macular Degeneration - Prevalence, Risk Factors & Clinical Management (Hardcover)
Melanie Carter
R3,649 Discovery Miles 36 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in individuals older than 65 years of age. The authors of this book discuss the role of genetics, sunlight, diet, cardiovascular factors, smoking and alcohol as possible risk factors for AMD. Furthermore, the dry form is more common and accounts for about 85-90% of AMD patients in the USA, while Japanese AMD patients predominantely progress to wet-form or polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). The function of a serine protein gene, HTRA1, in wet-form AMD patients is explored in detail. Conversely, the final chapter evaluates the therapeutic effects of high omega-3 fatty acids as anti-inflammatory agents in dry AMD patients. The preliminary findings indicate a promising therapeutic regime for dry AMD and perhaps for other retinopathies as well.
