This book offers a series of perspectives on the therapeutic
potential of the ritual and clinical use of the Amazonian
hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca in the treatment and management of
various disorders. This book presents biomedical and
anthropological data on the use of ayahuasca and provides critiques
on how it is used for treating depression, PTSD, anxiety, substance
dependence, and eating disorders. The volume also explores
ayahuasca's role in the psychological well-being and quality of
life of humans, and discusses possibilities of it enhancing
cognition and coping with grief. The book examines ayahuasca's
association with psychotherapy and also highlights the challenges
of integrating plant medicines into psychiatry. Further, the book
expands on some preliminary research with animals, suggesting that
ayahuasca acts at multiple levels of neural complexity. The study
on the neurogenic effects of ayahuasca alkaloids opens a new avenue
of research with potential applications ranging from psychiatric
disorders to brain damage and dementia. Psychologists,
psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals will find this
book relevant to their work regarding substance abuse and
alternative medicine.
Psychoanalysis and the Politics of Family aims to raise a
sophisticated and highly accessible debate around the family,
self-making and the political and cultural implications of
liberation. The text proposes a new way to read the Lacanian theory
of Oedipus and through this reading resituate a series of important
political and theoretical debates that have concerned intellectual
life over the last forty years. It is written with an accessible
style so that both specialists in Lacanian and Marxist theory and a
broader cross-section of readers interested in understanding the
implications of debates across populist and Marxist perspectives
that have occupied the global left since the 2008 economic crash.
The text aims to resituate the way theories of emancipation and
liberation are theorized from a distinctive psychoanalytic and
Lacanian point of view. In resituating the infamous "Oedipus
complex" in a new light, the text re-opens a series of debates with
important theoretical interlocutors, including the influential
American historian and psychoanalytic thinker Christopher Lasch,
whose thought has witnessed a significant renaissance of interest
today, to the staunch critic of Freud and Lacan, Rene Girard, to
Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari and their widely read
Anti-Oedipus series that disputes the Freudian and Lacanian notions
of Oedipus.
Flaviviruses are a diverse group of small RNA enveloped viruses,
many of which are important human and animal pathogens. The best
known include dengue virus, yellow fever virus, Japanese
encephalitis virus, and West Nile virus. These viruses are endemic
in many tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Dengue
virus alone infects over 100 million people annually. In recent
years, research on flaviviruses has progressed at a remarkable
rate, leading to significant advances in our understanding of virus
biology. This should ultimately lead to the development of better
vaccine and antiviral strategies. This up-to-date and cutting-edge
anthology contains contributions from the leading experts in the
flavivirus field. Chapters are balanced by contributions from
established investigators who have dedicated their careers to
flavivirus research with those from newcomers who have recently
made significant contributions to the flavivirus field. The book is
divided into two sections: Molecular Virology and Virus Prevention.
The first section on Molecular Virology covers: virion structure *
virus replication * the NS1 glycoprotein * the NS3 protein * the
NS5 protein * innate immunity and flavivirus infection * host
responses to flavivirus infection * flavivirus fitness and
transmission. The Virus Prevention section includes: vaccines *
antibody therapy * small molecule antiviral development *
flavivirus diagnostics * vector-virus interactions * vector
control. The book represents an important update of flavivirus
research and will serve as a reference to flavivirus researchers at
the graduate level and beyond. It is a recommended text for all
virology libraries.

As a physician who personally suffers from depression, Susan J.
Noonan draws on her own expertise and empathy to create a guide for
people who suffer from the disease. Explaining the basics of mental
health-including sleep hygiene, diet and nutrition, exercise,
routine and structure, and avoiding isolation - "Managing Your
Depression" empowers people to participate in their own care,
offering them a better chance of getting, and staying, well.
Noonan's depression management strategies draw on the best
available educational resources, psychoeducational programs,
seminars, expert health care providers, and patient experiences.
The book is specifically designed to be highly readable for people
who are finding it difficult to focus and concentrate during an
episode of depression. Cognitive exercises and daily worksheets
help track progress and response to therapy and provide valuable
information for making treatment decisions. A relapsing and
remitting condition, depression affects nearly 15 percent of people
in the United States. "Managing Your Depression" will bring
depression management strategies to people who do not have access
to mental health programs or who want to learn new skills.
Changing Habits of Mind presents a theory of personality that
integrates homeostatic dynamics of the brain with self-processes,
emotionality, cultural adaptation, and personal reality. Informed
by the author's brain-based, relational psychotherapeutic practice,
the book discusses the brain's evolutionary growth, the four
information-processing areas of the brain, and the cortex in
relationship to the limbic system. Integrating the different
experiences of sensory and non-sensory processes in the brain, the
text introduces a theory of personality currently lacking in
psychotherapy research that integrates neurobiology and psychology
for the first time. Readers will learn how to integrate
psychodynamic processes with cognitive behavioral techniques, while
clinical vignettes exemplify the interaction of neurophysiological
process with a range of psychological variables including
homeostasis, developmental family dynamics, and culture. Changing
Habits of Mind expands the psychotherapist's perspective, exploring
the important links between an integrated theory of personality and
effective clinical practice.
One of the greatest public health achievements during the 20th
century was the dramatic reduction in the incidence of infectious
diseases due to the development of improved hygiene, vaccines, and
antimicrobial agents. However, new infectious diseases are emerging
and bacteria-induced illnesses - such as tuberculosis, whooping
cough, and typhoid fever - are still a major cause of global
mortality. In recent decades, the development of molecular biology
and genetic tools has led to extensive studies on the molecular and
cellular aspects of the virulence properties of pathogenic
bacteria. In this book, a group of distinguished scientists from
eight different countries and three continents, under the expert
guidance of the editors Camille Locht and Michel Simonet, overview
the molecular and cellular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis.
The 15 chapters are organized into five sections: a) approaches to
the study of bacterial pathogenesis; b) bacterial adhesion to the
cell surface and extracellular matrix of host tissues; c) poisoning
the host by toxins; d) cellular invasion by bacterial pathogens;
and e) bacterial evasion of host defenses. The book comprehensively
describe the most relevant and up-to-date information on pathogenic
features across the bacterial world. Aimed at the entire scientific
community from students to senior scientists and physicians,
Bacterial Pathogenesis is relevant to a broad range of people
interested in the mechanisms of bacterial infectious diseases and
is a recommended text for all microbiology laboratories.
Renee Moreau Cunningham's unique study utilizes the psychology of
C. G. Jung and the spiritual teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin
Luther King, Jr. to explore how nonviolence works psychologically
as a form of spiritual warfare, confronting and transmuting
aggression. Archetypal Nonviolence uses King's iconic march from
Selma to Montgomery, a demonstration which helped introduce America
to nonviolent philosophy on a mass scale, as a metaphor for
psychological and spiritual activism on an individual and
collective level. Cunningham's work explores the core wound of
racism in America on both a collective and a personal level,
investigating how we hide from our own potential for evil and how
the divide within ourselves can be bridged. The book demonstrates
that the alchemical transmutation of aggression through a
nonviolent ethos, as shown in the Selma marches, is important to
understand as a beginning to something greater within the paradox
of human violence and its bedfellow, nonviolence. Archetypal
Nonviolence explores how we can truly transform hatred by
understanding how it operates within. It will be of great interest
to Jungian analysts and analytical psychologists in practice and in
training, and to academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian
studies, American history, race and racism, and nonviolent
movements.
This collection of essays examines the way psychoactive substances
are described and discussed within late eighteenth- and
nineteenth-century British literary and cultural texts. Covering
several genres, such as novels, poetry, autobiography and
non-fiction, individual essays provide insights on eighteenth- and
nineteenth-century understandings of drug effects of opium, alcohol
and many other plant-based substances. Contributors consider both
contemporary and recent medical knowledge in order to contextualise
and illuminate understandings of how drugs were utilised as
stimulants, as relaxants, for pleasure, as pain relievers and for
other purposes. Chapters also examine the novelty of
experimentations of drugs in conversation with the way literary
texts incorporate them, highlighting the importance of literary and
cultural texts for addressing ethical questions.
Macrocyclic lactones are chemical compounds that represent the main
treatment for parasitic diseases of animals, not only for helminth
infections, but also a number of major ectoparasitic infestations.
There has been no comprehensive book on this subject for more than
a decade and this book fills this gap and provides detailed
coverage of the basic science of these drugs and their mode of
action, as well as their clinical use in farm and companion animals
and in humans.

The purpose of this book is to introduce the classified chemical
components of hypoglycemic compounds in natural products, summarize
the recent research progress of natural products with hypoglycemic
activity in the past 20 years, and provide the original analysis
and development opinions of relevant scholars. Hypoglycemic
compounds are to target diabetes mellitus, an important public
health problem, one of four priority noncommunicable diseases
(NCDs) targeted for action by world leaders. Diabetes mellitus is a
common endocrine and metabolic disease, which not only causes
physiological damage to patients' kidneys, cardiovascular and
cerebrovascular vessels, peripheral blood vessels, nerves and eyes,
but also causes mental and psychological pressure to patients. Due
to the evidence that traditional medicine and natural herbal
formula have advantages in treating diabetes, natural products with
hypoglycemic activity have been studied extensively in recent years
and have been accepted by many scholars all over the world. This
book focuses on the progress on the study of the structure,
hypoglycemic activities, structure-activity relationships and
mechanism of a wide range of polysaccharides, flavonoids, saponins,
alkaloids, terpenoids, polyphenols and other constituents. It will
help students and researchers to understand current approaches and
progress in the treatment of diabetes with natural products, which
may also be beneficial to develop new hypoglycemic drugs.
