Tactile aids can offer a particularly cost-effective answer to the increasing demand for technical aids for the profoundly and totally deaf. This book covers the design of tactile aids - single and multichannel - and the ways in which they may benefit the hearing impaired. Authors from Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA have contributed chapters, and among the topics they cover are: fundamentals of vibrotactile and electrotactile perception; signal processing strategies; tactile coding (including synthetic Tadoma); choice of subjects and subject training; evaluation of tactile aids and comparison with cochlear implants; and communication for the deaf-blind. The book should provide a useful reference for those who work with the profoundly deaf, students and others with interests in the perception of speech and environmental sound.
The Understanding Rhinitis chart is an overview of the causes, types and treatment of rhinitis. Images and text show normal and affected sinuses, both overall and at a cellular level. Heavy cover stock with protective varnish for durability.
A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who has a severe or profound hearing loss. A cochlear implant does not cure deafness or hearing impairment, but is a prosthetic substitute which directly stimulates the cochlea. There are over 250,000 users worldwide with 12,000 in the UK. This book is a multidisciplinary guide to cochlear implantation in children and adults with sensorineural hearing loss (where the root cause lies in the inner ear or sensory organ, ie the cochlear and associated organs). Beginning with discussion on the aetiology of hearing loss and assessment of cochlear implant candidacy, the next chapter discusses preoperative cochlear implant imaging. Each of the following sections provides in depth coverage of different types of cochlear implantation and their potential outcomes. The final sections examine miscellaneous topics such as music perception in cochlear implantation, drug eluting electrodes, cost effectiveness, and reliability reporting. Authored by internationally recognised, US-based specialists, the text is further enhanced by clinical and surgical photographs and illustrations. For many individuals afflicted with tinnitus, the condition causes substantial distress. While there is no known cure for tinnitus, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can offer an effective strategy for managing the symptoms and side effects of chronic tinnitus. Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Tinnitus is the first book to provide comprehensive CBT counseling materials specifically developed for the management of tinnitus. This valuable professional book has two primary purposes: to provide clinical guidelines for audiologists who are offering CBT-based counseling for tinnitus and self-help materials for individuals with tinnitus. In addition, these materials may be of interest to researchers developing evidence-based therapies for tinnitus. The book is structured into three sections. Section A provides background information about the theoretical aspects of CBT and some practical tips on how to use this book. Section B provides the CBT counseling, or self-help, materials, which can be used by both audiologists and tinnitus sufferers. Finally, Section C provides some supplementary materials for clinicians that can aid monitoring and engagement of tinnitus suffers during the course of intervention. Key Features: The CBT materials contained in this text have been tested in numerous clinical trials across the globe (Australia, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States) both as self-help book chapters and self-help materials delivered via the Internet. The counseling materials are presented at minimum reading grade level (U.S. 6th grade level) to maximize reader engagement. The authors of this book have extensive experience in the management of tinnitus, offering useful insights for clinicians and tinnitus sufferers. Access to a PluralPlus companion website with various ancillaries such as expert advice videos for each chapter to facilitate its adoption to clinical practice.
The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of com prehensive and synthetic reviews of the fundamental topics in modem auditory research. It is aimed at all individuals with interests in hearing research including advanced graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes will introduce new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and will help established investigators to better understand the fundamental theories and data in fields of hearing that they may not normally follow closely. Each volume is intended to present a particular topic comprehensively, and each chapter will serve as a synthetic overview and guide to the literature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not yet appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The series focuses on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beginning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature. Each volume in the series consists of five to eight substantial chapters on a particular topic. In some cases, the topics will be ones of traditional interest for which there is a solid body of data and theory, such as auditory neuroanatomy (Vol. 1) and neurophysiology (Vol. 2). Other volumes in the series will deal with topics which have begun to mature more recently, such as development, plasticity, and computational models of neural processing."
The intention of the VIIth International Symposium on the Facial Nerve was to create a platform for an extensive exchange of knowledge and scientific infor mation between clinicians and basic research workers. This aim could only be realized on the basis of a common interest in the facial nerve, which unites the interdisciplinary scientific efforts of otologists, neurosurgeons, facial plastic surgeons, neurologists, neurophysiologists, and neuroanatomists. Therefore, a meeting of this kind remains in its aim to exchange ideas over scientific disciplines which do not come unique together normal conditions. The symposium has been held every four years since 1966. The VIIth sym posium was preceded by symposia in Stockholm (1966), Osaka (1970), ZUrich (1976), Los Angeles (1980), Bordeaux (1984) and Rio de Janeiro (1988), and marked an important milestone in the continuously developing knowledge about the facial nerve, its physiology, disorders, diagnostics and treatment. In contrast to the previous meetings this symposium extended in vitations to both clinicians and basic research workers. More than 350 scientists from 25 different nations met in Cologne, Germany, in June 1992 and their high-level presentations contributed to the overwhelming success of this international meeting. The symposium took place in the vicinity of the old cllthedral of Cologne, itself a vivid symbol of never-ending efforts to create something perfect and lasting."

Until recently, the contribution of immunological knowledge to the under standingand management ofENTdisorders was slight, being largely confined to the appreciation that many rhinitic patients were allergic. Happily, this situation is rapidly changing: the immunological basis of many disorders of the ears, nose and throat is becoming recognized and the mechanisms of the reactions involved are being elucidated. From this, rational therapy should evolve. This book aims to highlight some of the areas in which immunological mechanisms are involved in otorhinolaryngology. It is written by experts in their respective fields of immunology and allergy, otology, rhinology and pathology. It opens with an overview ofthe pathways ofthe immune response and the cells and molecules involved, leading to an appreciation of the normal defence mechanisms of the upper respiratory tract and possible areas offailure. There is then a chapter on HIV infection and how this may present to otorhinolaryngologists. The normal function of the tonsil and the immunological effects oftonsillectomy are then considered. The varying roles of fungi in ENT disorders ranging from commensal through allergen to invasive organisms is assessed by Professor R. J. Hay. Perhaps the most obvious immunological contribution to management thus far lies in the immunocytochemical diagnosis of pathological conditions of the ears, nose and throat and this is covered in a chapter by Professor Leslie Michaels."
First Published in 1996. The study makes an important contribution to newly emerging participative research methodologies in that it places the parents' view of the world at the centre of the analysis and in so doing, articulates the kinds of changes they think are necessary to improve the quality of life for their families and themselves. Due to an application of a social model, the book is important not just to families with deaf children and the professionals who work with them but to anyone who has an interest in disability issues.
This second edition is more extensive and detailed than the previous one - now a reference of two decades standing. New technical methods have increased our understanding of many tumours, and the earlier group of monomorphic adenomas has been separated for easier identification, while clearly defined tumours - even if uncommon - have their own category. With reference to their differences in prognosis and treatment, the various types of carcinomas are now listed separately, and new entities have been adopted. The inclusion of the TNM classification of salivary gland tumours together with the more detailed description of the tumour-like lesions will contribute to an even better understanding.
This volume deals with tumours occurring in the following sites: Nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses Nasopharynx Larynx, hypopharynx and trachea External ear Middle and inner ear The classification of tumours arising from each of the anatomical sites listed above is given separately. However, since the same tu- mour type may occur in more than one site, the definitions and il- lustrations have been grouped together. The classification is based on the histological characteristics of the tumours and is therefore concerned with morphologically identifiable cell types and histo- logical patterns as seen with conventional light microscopy. Al- though many of the histological terms and definitions have histo- genetic implications, this classification is not primarily based on histogenesis. The term "tumour" is used synonymously with neoplasm. The term "tumour-like" is applied to non-neoplastic lesions which clini- cally or morphologically resemble neoplasms; they are included in this classification because of their importance in differential diag- nosis. The terminology adopted for individual tumours is based on their general acceptance and world-wide usage. Synonyms are in- cluded only if they have been widely used in the literature or if they are considered helpful in understanding the lesions. In such cases the preferred terms are given first followed by the synonyms within parentheses.
The fourth edition of Children With Hearing Loss: Developing Listening and Talking, Birth to Six is a dynamic compilation of important information for the facilitation of spoken language for infants and young children with hearing loss. This fourth edition covers current and up-to-date information about auditory brain development, listening scenarios, auditory technologies, spoken language development, and intervention for young children with hearing loss whose parents have chosen to have them learn to listen and talk. The book is divided into two parts. Part I, Audiological and Technological Foundations of Auditory Brain Development, consists of the first five chapters that lay the foundation for brain-based listening and talking. These chapters include neurological development and discussions of ear anatomy and physiology, pathologies that cause hearing loss, audiologic testing of infants and children, and the latest in amplification technologies. Part II, Developmental, Family-Focused Instruction for Listening and Spoken Language Enrichment, includes the second five chapters on intervention: listening, talking, and communicating through the utilization of a developmental and preventative model that focuses on enriching the child's auditory brain centers. New to the Fourth Edition: * All technology information has been updated as has information about neurophysiology. * The reference list is exhaustive with the addition of the newest studies while maintaining seminal works about neurophysiology, technology, and listening and spoken language development. * New artwork throughout the book illustrates key concepts of family-focused listening and spoken language intervention. * A PluralPlus companion website with PowerPoint lecture slides for each chapter, plus relevant resource materials. This text is intended for undergraduate and graduate-level training programs for professionals who work with children who have hearing loss and their families. This fourth edition is also directly relevant for parents, Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS Cert. AVT and LSLS Cert. AVEd), speech-language pathologists, audiologists, early childhood instructors, and teachers. In addition, much of the information in Chapters 1 through 5, and also Chapter 7 can be helpful to individuals of all ages who experience hearing loss, especially to newly diagnosed adults, as a practical "owner's manual."
'Man's need for communication with his fellow man is possibly his greatest need and the fulfilment of his other needs and desires is largely dependent upon, or at the last greatly facilitated by, his ability to satisfy this basic one.' Louise Tracy Defective hearing disrupts human communication. It gives rise to anxiety, frustration, stress, isolation, loss of self-esteem, even loss of livelihood for the individual with a reduced capacity to receive and interpret sound. Because we live in families and communities, the effects of hearing loss are not restricted to the impaired individual. Those who associate with that person, especially those who are very close, are affected and prone to many of the same emotions and stresses. From the earliest times man has sought for remedies for hearing loss. Incantations, infusions, cuppings and bleedings, all have been advo cated and, with the rare, serendipitous exception, have been equally ineffective. The only real assistance for countless generations was to cup the hand behind the ear and ask the speaker to raise their voice.
Fibrin plays a prominent role in wound healing. It has a hemostatic effect, induces cellular response to wound damage,' and, by forming strands to build a matrix, assists in neovascularization and fibroblast proliferation. The concept of using clotting substances from human blood for wound manage- ment and to achieve hemostasis in bleeding parenchymatous organs can be traced to 1909, when Bergel [1] reported on the hemostatic effect of fibrin powder. In 1915, Grey [3] employed fibrin to control bleeding in neurosurgical operations of the brain. A year later, Harvey [4] used fibrin patches to stop bleeding from parenchy- matous organs in general surgery. It took more than two decades for this ingenious idea to be rediscovered. In 1940, Young and Medawar [8] reported on experimental nerve anastomosis by sealing. Similarly, Tarlov and Benjamin [7] reunited nerves with plasma clots in 1943. Tarlov improved the results obtained with clot anastomosing of nerves by avoiding tension at the nerve stumps. In 1944, Cronkite et al. [2] reported on an initial series of eight cases in which fibrinogen and thrombin had been used successfully for anchoring skin grafts.

The field of generic hearing impairment is one where rapid advances are taking place, and it can often be difficult for Audiologists to keep track of the broader picture. In this important new text the authors take a synoptic approach and summarize the causes and basis of hearing impairments, the impact on the individual and the therapies available, and the benefits and potential benefits of current developments.
Incidence of invasive fungal sinusitis has been increasing over the years. The understanding of its pathophysiology has improved with newer serological tests and diagnostic methods helping in earlier diagnosis and reducing patient morbidity. It was believed earlier that invasive fungal sinusitis is seen only in immune compromised patients but clinical reports suggest otherwise. More anti-fungal drugs are being added to improve incidence of patient survival. This book aims to compile all practical information about invasive fungal sinusitis into a single volume. Therefore, busy clinicians would not have to perform exhaustive literature studies to diagnose invasive fungal sinusitis. The book aims to provide an overview of diseases which could be mistaken for invasive fungal sinusitis and discuss how the management is different. Book sections consist of clinical, microbiological, serological, pathological, radiological and pharmacological features of the disease and its management. Each section is important in today s context as it dynamically alters the management of the patient. Early clinical suspicion and rapid microbiological, pathological and radiological diagnosis with aggressive treatment with surgical debridement and medical therapy leads to favorable outcomes. "
Emphasis is given to practical skills such as the ability to interpret audiograms to support therapy and referral decisions, and the subjective checking and troubleshooting of hearing aids. Symbols and terms appropriate to UK, Australian and USA clinicians are given throughout.
