Hyperalgesia and Allodynia - A Closer Look. Symptoms, Mechanisms and Treatment (Paperback): Merab G. Tsagareli Hyperalgesia and Allodynia - A Closer Look. Symptoms, Mechanisms and Treatment (Paperback)
Merab G. Tsagareli
R2,755 Discovery Miles 27 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pain and itch are associated with a wide range of injuries and diseases. Some conditions may have pain and associated symptoms arising from a discrete cause, such as postoperative and neuropathic pains or headaches. Chronic itch or pruritus is a frequent symptom in the general population and in many skin and systemic diseases. Millions of people on the planet suffer from acute or chronic pain and itch every year, and the effects of pain and itch exact a tremendous cost on most countries concerning health care costs, rehabilitation and lost worker productivity, as well as the emotional and financial burden it places on patients and their families. Therefore, the synthesis and development of a new generation of analgesic drugs with lesser side effects are very important for society. This book provides an original account of behavioral, cellular and molecular aspects with important ramifications for the study of hyperalgesia and allodynia in pain and itch. It concentrates on the role of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels functioning in pain and itch states. It explains how TRP channels work in terms of specified somato-sensory mechanisms and systems. This book shows that TRP channels are promising targets for the development of a new group of analgesic drugs at the periphery and central levels and opportunities for therapeutic intervention.

Gareth Parsons, Wayne Preece
R910 Discovery Miles 9 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"I found this book extremely easy to read. It does much more than tell us what pain is and how to limit or prevent it. It explains the ethical aspects of pain management and makes us think about why and how we should manage patients' pain, and what our rights and duties are in pain management. The book takes us from an explanation of pain, through pain assessment, pharmacology and management, and informs us how to plan for pain management, rather than only focussing on reactive pain control. It also looks at pain from the patient's perspective and teaches us how to assess pain using a variety of recognised tools ... I will use this book again and again, and would recommend it to fellow students who are placed on wards where pain management and planning is required." Conor Hamilton, Student Nurse, Queens University Belfast, UKThis practical introductory text provides an accessible guide to pain and how it affects patients and care giving. It considers: Different pain types including acute, chronic and palliativeAssessing painTreatment and pharmacology of pain controlChallenging situations and dilemmasCommunicating with patients in painEthical and legal aspects of treating pain The book also considers the experience of pain from the patients' perspective, to help healthcare students better understand the needs of patients who are in pain and how they can improve the care they give. Case studies, tools for decision making, insights on patient experiences and reflective exercises provide opportunities for you to reflect upon your own practice and to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills.Principles and Practice of Managing Pain is ideal for students preparing to practice in a health care environment.Contributor: Maria Parry, Senior Lecturer Palliative Care, University of Glamorgan, UK

Why 40%-80% of Chronic Pain Patients Are Misdiagnosed & How to Correct That (Hardcover): Nelson H. Hendler Why 40%-80% of Chronic Pain Patients Are Misdiagnosed & How to Correct That (Hardcover)
Nelson H. Hendler
R6,365 R5,750 Discovery Miles 57 500 Save R615 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is authored by a former faculty member of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the past president of the American Academy of Pain Management, and the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Association of America. He previously has authored three books, 33 medical textbook chapters, and 59 articles. The book addresses conceptual methods of problem solving as they are applied to medicine. This book is designed to be the freakanomics for medicine. Many research reports document that 40%-80% (or more, for certain disorders) of chronic pain patients are misdiagnosed. The leading cause of this failure is inadequate history taking and the use of the wrong medical tests. Part of this problem is the failure to recognise the specificity and sensitivity, as well as the false negative and false positive rates, of medical tests in use today. As an example, there are many articles in the literature which document that the MRI, an anatomical test, missed the detection of a damaged vertebral disc up to 78% of the time. The book explores the use of physiological tests, such as facet blocks, root blocks, peripheral nerve blocks, and provocative discograms to supplement anatomical testing. Compiled into a step-wise fashion, this book addresses the issues and provides methods to correct these problems. The techniques of history taking and the application of the correct medical tests have been proven effective, based on dramatic improvement in patients documented by outcome studies, which are validated by third parties, (not just self-reported). This book offers information based on evidence based medicine, not opinion. It provides information on how to think, not what to think.

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring. The Right to Pain Relief and Other Deep Roots of the Opioid Epidemic (Paperback): Mark Sullivan, Jane Ballantyne The Right to Pain Relief and Other Deep Roots of the Opioid Epidemic (Paperback)
Mark Sullivan, Jane Ballantyne
R1,163 Discovery Miles 11 630 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Right to Pain Relief and Other Deep Roots of the Opioid Epidemic offers a new lens through which to view the opioid epidemic as a consequence of serious misunderstandings of both opioids and pain. Based on their extensive research and experience with chronic pain care, science, ethics, and policy, the authors look beyond the usual villains-pharmaceutical companies and pharmacotherapy distributors-to examine the ethical and scientific concepts about pain that made the opioid epidemic possible. The book explores the history of pain in Western society, the role of innovation in end-of-life care, the conception of pain control as an important medical responsibility, and the various models of pain that have led to our current understanding of it, ultimately arguing that we must reintegrate pain with the rest of human suffering as a necessary part of a full life. Containing patient vignettes as well as scientific and policy controversies that have emerged as the opioid epidemic has evolved, The Right to Pain Relief and Other Deep Roots of the Opioid Epidemic examines these implications in a more human and holistic way than has been ever addressed before by the popular press and professional literature.

Opioid Use and Misuse in the Medicare System (Hardcover): Tom Freitag Opioid Use and Misuse in the Medicare System (Hardcover)
Tom Freitag
R4,090 Discovery Miles 40 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Medicare program serves as the healthcare coverage provider to over 58 million beneficiaries. In serving the over age 65 population, Medicare accounts for a large share of total opioid prescriptions. In 2016, one out of every three beneficiaries was prescribed an opioid through Medicare Part D. While many Medicare beneficiaries with serious pain-related conditions are being properly prescribed opioids, there is mounting evidence of opioid misuse in the Medicare system. This book looks at a proposed programs which seek to increase screening and thus, early detection of potential opioid use disorder upon entry into the Medicare program.

Chronic Pain - Prevalence, Management and Outcomes (Paperback): Stefan Friedman Chronic Pain - Prevalence, Management and Outcomes (Paperback)
Stefan Friedman
R1,757 Discovery Miles 17 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the opening chapter of Chronic Pain: Prevalence, Management and Outcomes, the authors examine how the health care professional might psychologically approach the management of chronic pain. The nocebo effect of some communications will be highlighted, as well as ways to utilise the patient's internal resources to reduce emotional distress. Following this, a study exploring pain coping mechanisms amongst Maltese chronic pain patients is presented. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 participants, and findings derived from a grounded theory methodology revealed that Maltese often display reluctance to rely on pharmacological therapies. The authors address the need for pain treatment, the reduced interference of interventional pain management, the increase of patient self-efficacy, and methods of acceptance for some chronic pain. The closing chapter analyzes 3,434 scheduled prescription drug records for 94 chronic back pain patients from a single clinic, comparing 52 patients enrolled in the New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program with 42 non-enrolled patients over a 24 month period.

As the movement for legalization of marijuana spreads across the country, it is important to weigh the possible benefits and pitfalls of cannabis use. Cannabis Consulting is both a handbook and a report from the front lines of medical marijuana use. Writing from the perspective of a parent and veteran schoolteacher turned professional cannabis consultant, Parzybok tells the often-inspiring stories of his efforts to assist victims of chronic pain, terminal disease, and even conditions such as ADHD. This timely volume was written for the patients, families, law enforcement, and health professionals all trying to make decisions about cannabis at this critical era of transition. It is an honest, clear-eyed exploration of the marijuana debate that looks beyond the hype and disinformation on both sides to chart a new path toward rational and safe use of cannabis.

R1,677 Discovery Miles 16 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

People who have cancer don't always have pain. Everyone is different. But if an individual does have cancer pain, it can almost always be relieved. Cancer pain can range from mild to very severe. Some days it can be worse than others. It can be caused by the cancer itself, the treatment, or both. This book discusses pain control medicines and other methods to help manage pain, and addresses the physical and emotional effects of pain. It includes questions to ask health care professionals, a sample pain control record, a list of resources, and a glossary of terms. This book also provides information and recipes to help patients meet their needs for good nutrition during cancer treatment.

In this yearbook for 2011 we start out with a description of research from the University of Toronto in Canada on bone metastases. The next section also from the Odette Cancer Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is about brain metastases, a frequent manifestation of advanced cancer devastating to the patient as typically patients do not survive more than a year upon diagnosis and the treatment itself often results in significant side effects that impact a patients quality of life. The next section is on neuroplasticity, which reflects the ability of human brain to alter the pattern of neural activation in response to previous experience, and recent findings indicate that the effects of experience can lead to both structural as well as functional reorganisation. If neuromodulatory approaches prove to be safe and effective, they could change the current view of best practice in pain management and assume a significant role in the clinic. This yearbook will present you with the latest research on pain management.

Helena Knotkova, Ricardo A Cruciani, Joav Merrick
R2,774 Discovery Miles 27 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Until recently, it was thought that the adult brain is modifiable only during early stages of ontogenesis. However, neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies now indicate that the mature human brain is under certain conditions capable of substantial neuroplastic changes. The concept of plasticity is complex and can be applied to all levels of neural organisation from molecular to systemic level of neural networks. Neuroplasticity reflects the ability of human brain to alter the pattern of neural activation in response to previous experience, and recent findings indicate that the effects of experience can lead to both structural as well as functional reorganisation. This book presents current research in the study of neural plasticity in chronic pain.

Pain is a response of the body to the action of injuring stimuli. Notwithstanding an unpleasant experience, it appears to be an important component of the defence system of the organism and a permanent regulator of homeostatic reaction. The organism's reaction to pain is a multi-component one and involves sensory-discriminative, emotional-affective and cognitive characteristics. Clinically, neuropathic pain is characterised by spontaneous ongoing or shooting pain and evoked amplified pain responses after nocuous or innocuous stimuli. The study of pain, therefore, and search for the treatment strategies have a paramount role in modern neurobiology. Numerous anatomy-physiological studies have revealed a number of brain structures involved in the shaping of pain and endogenous analgesia. This book presents and examines current research discovered in a behavioural study of 'non-opioid' tolerance.

Burn Your Chair - Healing Chronic Pain Through Active Rest (Paperback): Ari Heart Burn Your Chair - Healing Chronic Pain Through Active Rest (Paperback)
Ari Heart
R626 Discovery Miles 6 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Our bodies have the amazing ability to spontaneously self heal. However, in an age dominated by one shape-the chair shape-our natural capacity for regeneration is being suppressed. To solve this problem, scientists are studying people of traditional cultures who don't share our symptoms of lifestyle-based disease. A remarkable, yet simple truth is emerging: our ability to self heal is activated by moving and resting in active postures. If we avoid staying in one shape all day, our bodies are free to heal. This book explores the practices of people living without chair-based chronic pain, and includes eight shapes essential for healing the human body. By reconnecting with our self healing instincts and freeing our bodies from the trappings of modern life, we too can live lives free from pain.

This textbook is written as a comprehensive overview of acute pain management. It is designed to guide clinicians through an impressive array of different options available to them and to patients. In the last decade there has been a flurry of interest in the extent to which acute pain can become chronic pain, and how we might reduce the incidence of such chronicity. This overview covers a wide range of treatments for pain management, including the anatomy of pain pathways, the pathophysiology of severe pain, pain assessment, therapeutic guidelines, analgesic options, organization of pain services, and the role of anesthesiologists, surgeons, pharmacists, and nurses in providing optimal care. It also discusses the use of patient-controlled analgesia and how this may or may not be effective and useful.

The topics covered within this book aim to consolidate some of the current thinking around pain in children. For many years it was believed that children, and in particular babies; did not feel pain. But over the last twenty years or so this perspective has changed and we have seen many highly specialised pain clinics being set up around the world, dedicated to address the needs of the younger members of the population -- thus acknowledging that children in pain are not simply "smaller adults", but have particular experiences and requirements that can only be addressed by experts in the field, who are aware of the developmental factors that may influence their pain experience.

Accidental falls are the leading cause of death among older adults in the United States. One third of all adults aged 65 and older report falling each year. Elders living in institutions have 3 times the chance of falling compared to those living in their homes. Accidental falls are also very common in children of all ages. Young children learning to walk and toddlers are at greater risk of accidental falls resulting in possible cranio-cerebral injury. Practical implications for fall-prevention programs such as balance-training programs or mobility aids to reduce restrictions on lateral stepping movements can reduce accidental falls. This book presents research findings on the causes, preventions and interventions that impact fall risk.
