The exceptional brightness is the result of the pigment and of the natural mineral fines discovered by Sennelier in 1905 and used in their pastels ever since. For gradient shades, increasing amounts of mineral fines are added, ultimately tending towards white. Terry Ludwig began experimenting with formulas for making his own pastels in 1995 as he was frustrated with the lack of color options available and few choices for very soft pastels. He wanted to create a broad range of colors that were uniformly soft regardless of the density of the hue. There are now over 500 intense colors.
