Each pastel in the Terry Ludwig range is crafted by hand with a broad range of pigments and minimal, natural binders. This results in a pastel which has a high-concentrated pigment and is velvety soft. Terry Ludwig began experimenting with formulas for making his own pastels in 1995 as he was frustrated with the lack of color options available and few choices for very soft pastels. He wanted to create a broad range of colors that were uniformly soft regardless of the density of the hue. There are now over 500 intense colors.

The square shape of the pastel allows you to equally create thick, broad strokes or thin, precise lines. The size and shape of each pastel may differ slightly as each one is handcrafted. Each pastel measures 1 1/2 inches x 1/2 x 1/2.

Sennelier Soft Pastels are one of the world's largest chromatic pastel ranges and consist of high quality pure pigment finely grounded with a natural binder. The high quality composition of “à l’écu” pastels is the result of a perfect balance between binder and pigment. For gradient shades, increasing amounts of mineral fines are added, ultimately tending towards white. The exceptional brightness is the result of the pigment and of the natural mineral fines discovered by Sennelier in 1905 and that have been used ever since.

The manufacturing process of the Sennelier cylindrical pastel does not compress the paste and the pastel dries naturally in open air. The life span of a piece of work is guaranteed by the quality of the pastel, but also by the quality of the substrate. If a lot of overlapping is performed, it is preferable to fix between layers. Avoid, however, fixing the final layer too heavily, as the original tones will be lost.

Holbein Soft Pastels are a range of carefully selected artist quality colours with a soft powdery consistency that glides smoothly onto paper. Richly pigmented, they offer excellent blending and covering power.

Colours are tested in line with the standards of Holbein’s watercolour range for the best possible lightfastness and are composed mainly of colours with no or minor discolouration. Batches of each colour are monitored to guarantee an even distribution of pigment and binder.

This set contains 24 assorted soft pastels in a selection of essential colours.

This 36 set has been carefully put together by Robert Dutton to include colours that he believes are essential in replicating the fells and hills. These specially selected colours include the brand ‘new’ Dark 24.

Robert now works as a self-employed fine artist and tutor, winning regular fine art awards for his distinctive and expressive style of work in numerous international competitions.

The pastels are made in Northumberland and contain only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues, instead of adding white or black to the colours. The result is intense, vibrant colour not muddied by the blending of colours. Unison's pastels contain very little binder, making them truly soft and smooth. They are mixed to meticulous recipes and are based on traditional pigments such as cadmiums, cobalts and natural and synthetic earths.

Sticks vary slightly due to the hand-making process.

Toison D'Or Soft Pastels are made from some of the world's finest pigments. These cylindrical pastels are created with minimal binders and their extra soft texture means that they distribute colour well. The pastels can be blended or mixed with one another easily. Toison D'Or pastels come paper-wrapped and cushioned in a foam insert.

The use of a final fixative is highly recommended.

This set is a collaboration between Unison Pastels and the Australian pastel artist Tricia Taylor. Recognised for capturing the beauty of light, Tricia’s award winning seascapes are her specialty.

This set provides a palette suitable for capturing water and seascapes. The addition of light violets and pinks help create the white water of a crashing wave. For softer green oceans and foregrounds of the seascape, this set includes a lot of low-intensity colours with soft grey-greens and purple tones added. A variety of seascapes can be achieved, from the soft green northern water to the tropics.
