Viruses: Essential Agents of Life (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Gunther Witzany Viruses: Essential Agents of Life (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Gunther Witzany
R4,084 Discovery Miles 40 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A renaissance of virus research is taking centre stage in biology. Empirical data from the last decade indicate the important roles of viruses, both in the evolution of all life and as symbionts of host organisms. There is increasing evidence that all cellular life is colonized by exogenous and/or endogenous viruses in a non-lytic but persistent lifestyle. Viruses and viral parts form the most numerous genetic matter on this planet.

Dahlem LS - The Eradication of Infectious Diseases (about life sciences but no LS no.) (Hardcover): W.R. Dowdle Dahlem LS - The Eradication of Infectious Diseases (about life sciences but no LS no.) (Hardcover)
W.R. Dowdle
R8,780 Discovery Miles 87 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In October, 1987, smallpox became the first disease of humans to have been deliberately eradicated. Since then, global eradication campaigns against dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) and poliomyelitis have nearly reached their goals, and initial steps have been taken to stimulate similar programs to eradicate lymphatic filariasis and measles. Other successful efforts are expected to follow these. In 1993, an International Task Force for Disease Eradication evaluated over 80 potential candidate diseases and made recommendations. However, little has been done to develop the science of eradication systematically. This book reports the findings of a multidisciplinary workshop on the eradication of infectious diseases. It reviews the history of eradication efforts and lessons from previous campaigns and distinguishes among eradication, elimination, and control programs and extinction of an etiologic agent. It addresses a wide range of related issues, including biological and socio-political criteria for eradication, costs and benefits of eradication campaigns, opportunities for strengthening primary health care in the course of eradication efforts, and other aspects of planning and implementing eradication programs. Finally, it stresses the importance of global mechanisms for formulating and implementing such programs. Goal of this Dahlem Workshop: to identify the biological/epidemiological, cost/benefit, and societal/political criteria for the eradication of infectious diseases.

Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and its Comorbidities - A Case-Study Approach (Hardcover): Susan Ettinger Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and its Comorbidities - A Case-Study Approach (Hardcover)
Susan Ettinger
R1,860 Discovery Miles 18 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and Its Comorbidities: A Case-Study Approach challenges students and practitioners to understand the role of nutrients within the pathophysiology and development of disease, specifically those diseases which develop as a result of obesity. Through a case-based approach, the author presents complex clinical scenarios that require multiple treatment strategies, including targeted diet modification as an adjuvant to medical therapy. The book is divided into 9 modules and 5 appendices each of which covers aspects of obesity and its comorbidities. Within each module, a case is detailed with relevant history, laboratory and physical data, and follow-up information. Each case is followed by a resource section which delineates current understanding of the pathophysiology of the condition, as well as the actions of nutrients and food components shown to modify these processes. A "further readings" section cites current supporting clinical and basic literature as well as published guidelines.

In turn, it goes into more detail on how microbial communities are organised and why they are able to survive in the unique environment of our intestines. Readers will also learn about how their personal microbial profile is as unique as their fingerprint, and how it can be affected by a healthy or unhealthy lifestyle. Thanks to the open and easy-to-follow language used, the book offers an overview for all readers with a basic understanding of biology, and sheds new light on this fascinating and important part of our bodies.

One Health: The Human-Animal-Environment Interfaces in Emerging Infectious Diseases - The Concept and Examples of a One Health... One Health: The Human-Animal-Environment Interfaces in Emerging Infectious Diseases - The Concept and Examples of a One Health Approach (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
John S. MacKenzie, Martyn Jeggo, Peter Daszak, Juergen A. Richt
R6,293 Discovery Miles 62 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

One Health is an emerging concept that aims to bring together human, animal, and environmental health. Achieving harmonized approaches for disease detection and prevention is difficult because traditional boundaries of medical and veterinary practice must be crossed. In the 19th and early 20th centuries this was not the case-then researchers like Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch and physicians like William Osler and Rudolph Virchow crossed the boundaries between animal and human health. More recently Calvin Schwabe revised the concept of One Medicine. This was critical for the advancement of the field of epidemiology, especially as applied to zoonotic diseases. The future of One Health is at a crossroads with a need to more clearly define its boundaries and demonstrate its benefits. Interestingly the greatest acceptance of One Health is seen in the developing world where it is having significant impacts on control of infectious diseases.

Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat (Hardcover): George A Parker, Catherine A. Picut Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat (Hardcover)
George A Parker, Catherine A. Picut
R4,048 Discovery Miles 40 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat should be of interest to toxicologic pathologists, toxicologists, and other biological scientists who are interested in the histomorphology of juvenile rats. For several decades the laboratory rat has been used extensively in nonclinical toxicology studies designed to detect potential human toxicity of drugs, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and environmental hazards. These studies traditionally have involved young adult rats that are 8-10 weeks of age as studies are started. It is becoming increasingly apparent that children and young animals may have different responses to drug/chemical exposures, therefore, regulatory agencies are emphasizing toxicology studies in juvenile animals. While the histologic features of organs from young adult and aged laboratory rats are well known, less is known about the histologic features of organs from juvenile rats. Final histologic maturity of many organs is achieved postnatally, thus immature histologic features must be distinguished from chemical- or drug-related effects. While this postnatal organ development is known to exist as a general concept, detailed information regarding postnatal histologic development is not readily available. The Atlas includes organs that are typically sampled in nonclinical toxicology studies and presents the histologic features at weekly intervals, starting at birth and extending through postnatal day 42.

Complement Activation in Malaria Immunity and Pathogenesis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Jose A. Stoute Complement Activation in Malaria Immunity and Pathogenesis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Jose A. Stoute
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Plasmodium falciparum malaria is responsible for the deaths of nearly 500,000 people each year. Much attention has been paid to antibody and cellular mechanisms of immunity against this pathogen. By contrast, the role that the complement system plays in immunity and pathogenesis in this infection is not very well recognized or understood. Based on the work of a number of research groups, we know that complement plays an important role in these processes. In this book, some of the leading scientists in the field discuss the mechanisms of complement activation during malaria infection as well as the role of complement in the pathogenesis of key syndromes such as severe malarial anemia, cerebral malaria, and placental malaria. In addition, they review recently-identified complement evasion strategies of P. falciparum merozoites, and how these mechanisms may translate into paradoxical enhancement of infection rather than protection. Finally, they also discuss the role of the mosquito complement system on immunity against the parasite.

Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging - Volume 10 (Hardcover): M. A. Hayat Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging - Volume 10 (Hardcover)
M. A. Hayat
R3,545 Discovery Miles 35 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging, Volume 10 offer a valuable guide to both cellular processes, while encouraging researchers to explore their potentially important connections. Autophagy serves to maintain healthy cells, tissues, and organs, but also promotes cancer survival and growth of established tumors. Impaired or deregulated autophagy can also contribute to disease pathogenesis. This is the tenth volume of the multivolume series that discusses, in detail, almost all aspects of the autophagy machinery in the context of health, cancer, and other pathologies. Autophagy maintains homeostasis during starvation or stress conditions by balancing the synthesis of cellular components and their deregulation by autophagy. Volume 10 of the Autophagy series discusses the role of a novel binuclear palladacycle complex that inhibits melanoma growth through apoptosis and autophagy.

Endotoxin Detection and Control in Pharma, Limulus, and Mammalian Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Kevin L. Williams Endotoxin Detection and Control in Pharma, Limulus, and Mammalian Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Kevin L. Williams
R6,009 Discovery Miles 60 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Endotoxin detection and control is a dynamic area of applied science that touches a vast number of complex subjects. The intersection of test activities includes the use of an ancient blood system from an odd "living fossil" (Limulus). It is used to detect remnants of the most primitive and destructive forms of life (prokaryotes) as contaminants of complex modern systems (mammalian and Pharma). Recent challenges in the field include those associated with the application of traditional methods to new types of molecules and manufacturing processes. The advent of "at will" production of biologics in lieu of harvesting animal proteins has revolutionized the treatment of disease. While the fruits of the biotechnology revolution are widely acknowledged, the realization of the differences in the means of production and changes in the manner of control of potential impurities and contaminants in regard to the new versus the old are less widely appreciated. Endotoxin as an ancient, dynamic interface between lifeforms, provides a singular perspective from which to view the parallel development of ancient and modern organisms as well as the progress of man in deciphering the complexity of their interactions in his efforts to overcome disease.
