Identity Matters - Ethnic and Sectarian Conflict (Paperback, illustrated edition): James L Peacock, Patricia M. Thornton,... Identity Matters - Ethnic and Sectarian Conflict (Paperback, illustrated edition)
James L Peacock, Patricia M. Thornton, Patrick B. Inman
R814 Discovery Miles 8 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In response to the attacks of September 11, 2001 and war in Afghanistan, the Fulbright New Century Scholars program brought together social scientists from around the world to study sectarian, ethnic, and cultural conflict within and across national borders. As one result of their year of intense discussion, this book examines the roots of collective violence - and the measures taken to avoid it - in Burma (Myanmar), China, Germany, Pakistan, Senegal, Singapore, Thailand, Tibet, Ukraine, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe. Case studies and theoretical essays introduce the basic principles necessary to identify and explain the symbols and practices each unique human group holds sacred or inalienable. The authors apply the methods of political science, social psychology, anthropology, journalism, and educational research. They build on the insights of Gordon Allport, Charles Taylor, and Max Weber to describe and analyze the patterns of behavior that social groups worldwide use to maintain their identities. Written to inform the general reader and communicate across disciplinary boundaries, this important and timely volume demonstrates ways of understanding, predicting and coping with ethnic and sectarian violence. Contributors: Badeng Nima, David Brown, Kwanchewan Buadaeng, Patrick B. Inman, Karina V. Korostelina, James L. Peacock, Thomas F. Pettigrew, Wee Teng Soh, Hamadou Tidiane Sy, Patricia M. Thornton, Mohammad Waseem.

Exclusion and Forced Migration in Central America - No More Walls (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Carlos Sandoval-Garcia Exclusion and Forced Migration in Central America - No More Walls (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Carlos Sandoval-Garcia
R1,877 Discovery Miles 18 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book marks a critical contribution to the intercultural dialogue about immigration. Each year, thousands of Central Americans leave their countries and walk across Mexico, seeking to reach the United States. The author explores the dispossession process that drives these migrants from their homes and argues that they are caught in a kind of trap: forced to emigrate, but impeded to immigrate. This trap is discussed empirically through the analysis of immigration policies implemented by the United States government and ethnographic fieldwork carried out in some of "albergues" (shelters).

The Digital Silk Road - China's Technological Rise and the Geopolitics of Cyberspace (Paperback): David Gordon, Nouwens... The Digital Silk Road - China's Technological Rise and the Geopolitics of Cyberspace (Paperback)
David Gordon, Nouwens Meia
R849 Discovery Miles 8 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Concerns about China's ambitions to return to global centre stage as a great power have recently begun to focus on the Digital Silk Road (DSR), an umbrella term for various activities - commercial and diplomatic - of interest to the Chinese government in the cyber realm. Part of (or a spin-off from) the 2013 Belt and Road Initiative, by 2020 the DSR had become a focal point of China's foreign policy. But the DSR remains ill-defined and poorly understood. At the heart of such concerns is not that Chinese technology companies are becoming globally competitive, but rather that Beijing could use them to 'rewire' the global digital architecture, from physical cables to code. Dominance by Chinese technology could shift global norms from a free cyber commons to competing systems of cyber sovereignty or cyber freedom. This Adelphi book brings together eight experts to examine the development of the DSR, explore its impact on economics, security and governance in recipient countries, and assess the broader impact on patterns of economic and technological dependence, on the emerging rules and norms of tech globalisation, and on global geopolitics and great-power relations. Beijing has grasped the opportunity to leverage the entrepreneurial strengths of its private tech sector to gain prominence in the world's digital ecosystem. But the more interventionist Beijing becomes, the more Chinese firms will be seen as instruments of the state, and the greater the pushback against Chinese technology and the DSR may be. To achieve great-power status and global centrality, Beijing might ultimately need to change tack. How it innovates in further rolling out Chinese tech across the world, and what the DSR will then look like, will have far-reaching impacts on global economics, politics and security.

Relational Peace Practices (Hardcover): Anna Jarstad, Johanna Soederstroem, Malin Akebo Relational Peace Practices (Hardcover)
Anna Jarstad, Johanna Soederstroem, Malin Akebo
R2,436 Discovery Miles 24 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents a new approach for studying peace beyond the absence of war. As war ends, the varying nature of the peace that ensues has been the object of much debate. Through in-depth case studies, including Cyprus, Cambodia, South Africa, Abkhazia, Transnistria/Russia, Colombia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Myanmar, the book illustrates how conceptualising 'relational peace' provides a framework that can be applied across cases and actors, different levels of analysis, a variety of geographical contexts and using different temporal perspectives and types of data. This novel framework enables improved empirical studies of peace. The book contributes nuanced understandings of peace in particular settings and demonstrates the multifaceted nature of peaceful relations - what is termed 'relational peace practices' - making important contributions to the field of studying peace beyond the absence of war. -- .

The Psychology of Peacekeeping (Hardcover): Harvey Langholtz The Psychology of Peacekeeping (Hardcover)
Harvey Langholtz
R2,716 Discovery Miles 27 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Langholtz examines how psychology and other social sciences can offer both theoretical explanations and practical applications in the resolution and amelioration of potentially violent international conflicts. Since the end of the Cold War and bipolar ideologies, the international community has been willing to intervene using approaches that are founded as much in psychology as in force and these remedies have not been confined to the violent periods of conflicts. This book examines psychological interventions and issues during three phases of conflicts. First, the book examines measures available in advance of a threatening conflict through early intervention and an examination of ethnopolitical issues, economic problems, and potential diplomatic solutions. Second, psychological facets of peacekeeping are examined: the selection of peacekeepers, psychological ambiguities of peacekeeping, and the numbing that comes with widespread suffering. Finally the book examines the psychological measures available to strengthen a cease-fire, deal with mines and related after-effects of war, encourage reconciliation, and hasten the return to a stable and durable peace.

Advancing Interdisciplinary Approaches to International Relations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Steve A. Yetiv, Patrick James Advancing Interdisciplinary Approaches to International Relations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Steve A. Yetiv, Patrick James
R3,055 Discovery Miles 30 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited volume breaks new ground by innovatively drawing on multiple disciplines to enhance our understanding of international relations and conflict. The expansion of knowledge across disciplines and the increasingly blurred boundaries in the real world both enable and demand thinking across intellectual borders. While multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary are prominent buzz words, remarkably few books advance them. Yet doing so can sharpen and expand our perspective on academic and real world issues and problems. This book offers the most comprehensive treatment to date and is an invaluable resource for students, scholars and practitioners.

Proxy War in Yemen (Hardcover): Bernd Kaussler, Keith A Grant Proxy War in Yemen (Hardcover)
Bernd Kaussler, Keith A Grant
R1,380 Discovery Miles 13 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyzes the civil war in Yemen and how intervening external actors have shaped the trajectory of the conflict. The work examines the conflict in Yemen as a testing ground for expectations about the autonomy and control of proxies by external patrons and the direct consequences for civilian victimization and duration of war. Like other proxy wars, the international dimensions of the war made the conflict in Yemen subject to the geopolitical interests of intervening powers. The longstanding power rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran over Middle East supremacy resulted in a competitive intervention in Yemen, where the initial belligerents of the civil war-the Houthi and the Hadi regime-were used as proxies by Tehran and the Gulf coalition led by Riyadh, respectively. Their intervention ultimately translated into a prolonged and destructive conflict. The often contradictory and self-interested patronage strategies by the coalition's two central patrons, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, undermined their broader goal of containing Iran. However, Iran's support for the Houthis enabled them to bait and bleed the Gulf coalition. Lastly, in an effort to balance against Iran, the United States underwrote the military campaign of the Gulf states with military hardware and personnel, thereby further prolonging the conflict and humanitarian disaster. This book concludes that intervention by external patrons both protracted the civil war and made it far more destructive for the civilian population. This book will be of much interest to students of proxy wars, Middle Eastern conflict, and security studies in general.

Politics Is about Relationship - A Blueprint for the Citizens' Century (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): H Saunders Politics Is about Relationship - A Blueprint for the Citizens' Century (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
H Saunders
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this straightforward exploration of core problems facing humanity, hope is combined with realism based on confidence in the energies and capacities of citizens outside government to meet the pressing challenges we face today. Saunders presents an eye-opening approach to politics, focusing on the cumulative, multilevel, open-ended process of continuous interaction over time in whole bodies politic across permeable borders, either within or between countries. Showing how this approach works on the ground through examples from West Virginia to South Africa, Tajikistan to China, this book is a major contribution to our understanding of the state of the world and the prospects of democracy.

Water Issues in Himalayan South Asia - Internal Challenges, Disputes and Transboundary Tensions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Amit... Water Issues in Himalayan South Asia - Internal Challenges, Disputes and Transboundary Tensions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Amit Ranjan
R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book looks into the domestic water issues and disputes in the Himalayan South Asian countries, and based on it analyzes trans-boundary water disputes. Himalayan South Asia comprises India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Afghanistan. All except Afghanistan share river waters with India. Home to some of the major river basins of the world, a part of this region falls into water scarce zone, and according to the United Nations Water Report of 2018 some of them will experience severe water scarcity by 2050. The book also studies water issues in China. Though the country is not a part of the Himalayan South Asia, most of the major rivers of this region originate in China. Over the years, China has been alleged by countries like India for diverting, choking or using the trans-boundary river waters for its purpose. Understanding water competition and issues in China will help one to understand its transboundary water behavior.

Age of Fear (Routledge Revivals) - Power Versus Principle in the War on Terror (Hardcover): Amitav Acharya Age of Fear (Routledge Revivals) - Power Versus Principle in the War on Terror (Hardcover)
Amitav Acharya
R2,905 Discovery Miles 29 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 2004 in the immediate wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, this is an accessible commentary intended to provoke thought and debate on the topic of terrorism. In a collection of challenging essays, questions consider the causes of terrorism and why post-modern terrorism is different. The essays are divided into three key sections, first investigating the civilizational roots and dimensions of contemporary terrorism, next examining the Bush administration's approach, and finally, considering the complex and changing relationship between fear and freedom. Written by a leading scholar in Middle East and Asian Studies, this comprehensive reissue will be of particular value to students of international relations and terrorism studies, as well as the more general reader with an interest in the global issues faced in the age of contemporary terrorism.

State, Memory, and Egypt's Victory in the 1973 War - Ruling by Discourse (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Mustafa Menshawy State, Memory, and Egypt's Victory in the 1973 War - Ruling by Discourse (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Mustafa Menshawy
R3,990 Discovery Miles 39 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores and problematises the war discourse regarding Egypt's victory in the 1973 War. It traces the process through which this discourse was constructed and reconstructed by the state throughout the periods of President Anwar Sadat, his successor Hosni Mubarak, and afterwards. It uses Critical Discourse Analysis to combine analysis of texts commemorating the war with a study of the socio-political milieu related to personal authoritarianism and the state's intricate relations with the army, the press and Islamists.

Britain and the Geneva Disarmament Conference (Hardcover): C Kitching Britain and the Geneva Disarmament Conference (Hardcover)
C Kitching
R2,784 Discovery Miles 27 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this fascinating study, Carolyn Kitching examines the role which Britain played at the Geneva Disarmament Conference, an event which marked a watershed in inter-war international relations. Failure to reach agreement in Geneva hastened the collapse of the Treaty of Versailles, and gave the green light for German re-armament. Britain was arguably the only Power capable of mediating between conflicting French and German demands over the Treaty's disarmament clauses, and this analysis reveals that the traditional interpretation of British policy at the conference needs to be drastically revised.

Evangelicalism and Conflict in Northern Ireland (Hardcover, Us North Americ): G. Ganiel Evangelicalism and Conflict in Northern Ireland (Hardcover, Us North Americ)
G. Ganiel
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the role of evangelicalism in the conflict in Northern Ireland and discusses how it may contribute to a peaceful political transition. Ganiel analyzes the 'traditional' evangelicals who are associated with the Reverend Ian Paisley, as well as a new breed of 'mediating' evangelicals who have broken with the traditions of the past. Comparing evangelical politics in Northern Ireland to the U.S. and Canada, this book sheds light on future directions for Northern Irish evangelicalism. The conclusion has global reverberations as it reflects on the place of 'strong' religions-such as evangelicalism and other forms of fundamentalism-in contemporary world politics.

Democracy and Ethnic Conflict - Advancing Peace in Deeply Divided Societies (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): A. Guelke Democracy and Ethnic Conflict - Advancing Peace in Deeply Divided Societies (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
A. Guelke
R2,796 Discovery Miles 27 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Democracy and Ethnic Conflict" addresses the problem of establishing durable democratic institutions in societies afflicted by ethnic conflict. While the holding of multi-party elections usually plays a role in the ending of conflict, consolidating democracy presents a much larger challenge, as does preventing the perversion of democracy through the dominance of a particular ethnic group.

The Future of Sea Power (Paperback): Eric Grove The Future of Sea Power (Paperback)
Eric Grove
R914 Discovery Miles 9 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, first published in 1990, presents a fundamental reassessment of maritime strategy. It analyses the lessons of twentieth-century naval warfare and examines in detail the changing face of naval warfare, both in terms of the weapons used and the platforms from which they are launched and controlled. It looks at the evolving uses of the seas, both economic and military, and sets sea power against the developing world environment, political, legal and economic, discussing those factors that stimulate nations to exert power at sea and those that limit their naval capabilities. It also develops a theoretical framework for future thinking about maritime strategy and forces, revises and updates Mahan's classical analysis of the foundations of sea power, and discusses thinking about naval tasks.

Negotiating for Peace in the Middle East (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover): Ismail Fahmy Negotiating for Peace in the Middle East (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover)
Ismail Fahmy
R5,026 Discovery Miles 50 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ismail Fahmy was Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Premier of Egypt, but resigned in protest against President Sadat's visit to Jerusalem in 1977. This book, published in 1983, presents the first portrait of Sadat from within the Arab ruling elite, and gives unique coverage of the crucial negotiations that took place between Arab leaders, which determined the key events during this period. Fahmy vividly recounts the years when prospects for a permanent peace in the Middle East seemed a real possibility and presents a damning portrayal of the roles that Kissinger, Nixon and Carter played in events. This is a fascinating account of the struggle for peace in the Middle East, written from the unique perspective of a hugely influential contemporary at the heart of the dialogue.

A Future for Peacekeeping? (Hardcover): Edward Moxon-Browne A Future for Peacekeeping? (Hardcover)
Edward Moxon-Browne
R2,788 Discovery Miles 27 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study challenges the easy assumption that peacekeeping as we've known it in the past will be the 'pill for every ill' in the future. A 'new world order' means new types of conflict breaking out almost anywhere in a world that is more volatile and less predictable than before. Contributors to this volume argue that we need to get back to basics; that there are sobering lessons to be learnt from Somalia, the Lebanon and Cambodia; that we need to ask some fundamental questions. Can peacekeeping be 'reformed' or must it be totally 'reinvented'? Are soldiers the best peacekeepers and, if not, who should replace them?
