Time and Behaviour, Volume 120 - Psychological and Neurobehavioural Analyses (Hardcover): C.M. Bradshaw, E. Szabadi Time and Behaviour, Volume 120 - Psychological and Neurobehavioural Analyses (Hardcover)
C.M. Bradshaw, E. Szabadi
R4,331 Discovery Miles 43 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

That time is both a dimension of behaviour and a ubiquitous controlling variable in the lives of all living things has been well recognized for many years.
The last decade has seen a burgeoning of interest in the quantitative analysis of timing behaviour, and progress during the last five or six years has been particularly impressive, with the publication of several major new theoretical contributions.
There has also been considerable progress in behavioural methodology during the past decade. In the area of reinforcement schedules, for example, the venerable interresponse time schedule, fixed interval peak procedure and interval bisection task have been complemented by a 'second generation' of incisive instruments for analyzing timing behaviour.
Another area of recent development is the analysis of the neurobiological substrate of timing behaviour. Several research groups are currently studying the involvement of various central neurotransmitter systems in the timing behaviour, and the ability of centrally acting drugs and discrete brain lesions to alter timing processes.
Yet another recent development in timing research is the growing dialogue between two fields that have grown up separately, although, superficially at least, they seem to have much in common: the experimental analysis of 'interval timing', traditionally the province of experimental psychology, and behavioural chronobiology. The last few years have seen a growing interest in the comparative properties of the internal 'clocks' that regulate biobehavioural rhythms with time bases in the circadian range or longer, and those that are entailed in timing of intervals in the range of seconds or minutes.
All these areas of research, and others, are represented in the chapters that make up this volume. This book will help to promote further interactions among researchers who hail from disparate disciplines, but who share a common interest in the temporal properties of behaviour."

Deconstructing the Feminine - Psychoanalysis, Gender and Theories of Complexity (Hardcover): Leticia Glocer Fiorini Deconstructing the Feminine - Psychoanalysis, Gender and Theories of Complexity (Hardcover)
Leticia Glocer Fiorini
R4,170 Discovery Miles 41 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The guiding thread of this theoretical review is the illumination of the impasses of binary thought and of the essentialist conceptions of women and the feminine. In this trajectory, the author's ongoing dialogue with Freud is connected with one aspect of his way of thinking: multicentred and complex. The text addresses questions relating to love, sexual desire, maternity, beauty and the passing of time and highlights current debates concerning women, the feminine, and sexual difference as well as some controversial topics that have been discussed throughout the history of the psychoanalytic movement. One of the most relevant subjects is the notion of 'feminine enigma' and the conceptions of the feminine as the negative of the masculine, which means going into the nature-nurture debate, as well as into considerations of the feminine seen as the other of the masculine. The author points out that the notion of 'feminine enigma' is a displacement of the enigmas inherent to the origins, to the finite time of life (the inevitability of death) and to sexual difference.

Shaping the Future of Child and Adolescent Mental Health: Towards Technological Advances and Service Innovations coincides with the 25th International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP) Congress in Dubai from December 5-9, 2022. There are three overarching themes of this book. Firstly, the impact of the Internet and digital technologies on the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents, including computerized therapies, and the fundamental role of technologies to advance knowledge in the field. Secondly, a theme on harnessing the expansion of knowledge on psychiatric disorders and their treatment for children and adolescents, exemplified by chapters on different kinds of adversity in child and adolescent mental health and a chapter on precision therapeutics. Given the location of the IACAPAP Congress, the third theme focuses on aspects of child and adolescent mental health in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Chapters provide insights into a broad range of contemporary technology- and service innovation-related topics in child and adolescent psychiatry and mental health. These include growing up in the digital age, cyberbullying, clinical applications of big data and machine learning, computerized cognitive behavioral therapy, technology- enhanced learning, lessons from COVID-19, new understanding of the consequences of psychological trauma, autoimmune encephalitis, and precision therapeutics in depression. Acknowledging the global challenge of child and adolescent psychiatry and mental health, readers will find an emphasis on contextual challenges in the field, including innovations for scaling up of mental health intervention in low- and middle-income countries, and research and training in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Circumcision on the Couch - The Cultural, Psychological, and Gendered Dimensions of the World's Oldest Surgery... Circumcision on the Couch - The Cultural, Psychological, and Gendered Dimensions of the World's Oldest Surgery (Hardcover)
Jordan Osserman
R3,375 Discovery Miles 33 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An Independent Book of the Month Penises, and the things people do with them, have been subjects of controversy for a long time. This book examines how one thing that some people do to penises-remove the foreskin-has become a site upon which vital questions of gender, race, religion, sexuality, and psychic life are negotiated. While most contemporary work on the subject is concerned with whether circumcision is right or wrong, safe or harmful, Circumcision on the Couch takes as its starting point that the significance of male circumcision exceeds anatomical and juridical considerations. Deploying a feminist Lacanian framework, while drawing from a wide range of archival sources and critical thought, Jordan Osserman asks: How can psychoanalysis help us shed light on the ideologies, discourses, and fantasies surrounding circumcision and the impassioned stances for and against it? And how might the history of circumcision, in turn, allow us to re-assess and clarify how we understand the split (or "snipped") subject of psychoanalysis?

Coreene Archer, Rachel Kelly, Gordon Strauss, Joseph Triest
R1,049 Discovery Miles 10 490 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The unconscious dynamics that surface in groups when authority is exercised are of paramount importance in Group Relations Conferences; this volume addresses these considerations through research findings and speculation on the future of Group Relations both within conferences and outside of them. This is the sixth instalment in a series of books based on Tavistock Group Relations Conferences and contains a collection of papers presented at the sixth Belgirate conference. Combining chapters on theory and practice, this volume delivers a meditation on the relationships between the physical spaces we inhabit or co-create, the psychic, inner or spiritual space and the liminal space in-between. Group Relations provides a window of understanding into why inequity and intergroup hostilities pervade the modern world alongside a method that illuminates how people consciously and unconsciously contribute to these tensions, whether personally, in groups or in organisations. This will be an invaluable resource for practitioners, academics, and scholars of Group Relations, as well as managers and organisational members wanting to learn more about how Group Relations methods can contribute to their organisational success.

Exploring the Emotional Life of the Mind - A Psychodynamic Theory of Emotions (Paperback): Daniel Helderman Exploring the Emotional Life of the Mind - A Psychodynamic Theory of Emotions (Paperback)
Daniel Helderman
R988 Discovery Miles 9 880 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This highly innovative new book reconsiders the structure of basic emotions, the self and the mind. It clinically covers mental disorders, therapeutic interventions, defense mechanisms, consciousness and personality and results in a comprehensive discussion of human responses to the environmental crisis. For openers, a novel psychodynamic model of happiness, sadness, fear and anger is presented that captures their object relational features. It offers a look through the eyes of these specific emotions and delineates how they influence the interaction with other persons. As regulation of the emotional state is the core task of the self, dysregulation can lead to mental disorders. Clinical cases of post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and depression are discussed, using the model to outline the emotional turbulence underneath. Finally, the elaborated theory is used to analyse personal responses to the environmental crisis and political strategies that capitalise on them. This book will appeal to scholars, psychotherapists and psychiatrists with an interest in emotions and who wish to challenge their own implicit theory of emotion with an explicit new model. It will also be of interest for academic researchers and professionals in fields where emotional processes play a pivotal role.

Transportation, Traffic Safety and Health - Human Behavior (Hardcover): H. von Holst, A. Nygren, A. E. Andersson Transportation, Traffic Safety and Health - Human Behavior (Hardcover)
H. von Holst, A. Nygren, A. E. Andersson
R2,616 Discovery Miles 26 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The focus of this book is to present the latest aspects in the area of human behavior and its relation to planning of an optimal traffic safety. The contributions from authors in various disciplines such as scientists, medical practitioners, administrators and practitioners from the car industry examine how road-user behavior can cause accidents and how decision-makers from various sectors of society may influence road users' behavior. The development of modern vehicles and new traffic systems requires more sophisticated behavior and technology. New medical technologies such as improved neuropsychologic methods and descriptive mapping of behavior with imaging techniques facilitate the understanding of the anatomy and physiology of human behavior. The increased knowledge of normal and pathologic behavior contributes to strenghten primary prevention with the goal of reducing traffic accidents.

On Religion and Psychology (Hardcover): S. Coleridge On Religion and Psychology (Hardcover)
S. Coleridge; Edited by J. Beer
R2,886 Discovery Miles 28 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Of all the wide-ranging interests Coleridge showed in his career, religion was the deepest and most long-lasting; and Beer demonstrates in this book that none of his work can be fully understood without taking this into account. Beer reveals how Coleridge was preoccupied by the life of the mind, and how closely this subject was intertwined with religion in his thinking. The insights that emerge in this collection are of absorbing interest, showing the efforts of a pioneer to reconcile traditional wisdom, both inside and outside orthodox Christianity, with the questions that were becoming evident to a sensitive enquirer.

Uncanny Modernity - Cultural Theories, Modern Anxieties (Hardcover): Jo Collins Uncanny Modernity - Cultural Theories, Modern Anxieties (Hardcover)
Jo Collins; Edited by J. Jervis
R1,514 Discovery Miles 15 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Examines and interrogates the concept of the 'uncanny', and the cultural contexts which allow such experiences of disorientation and alienation. This book includes translation of Ernst Jensch's seminal essay, On the Psychology of the Uncanny (1906) - first time this has been available in English. A timely collection - the term 'uncanny' has become confused in critical theory, and this book helps clarify what it means in contemporary culture. It has a broad appeal and illustrates the range and influence of the 'uncanny' in current research in the humanities and beyond (contributors work in a range of fields, from film studies, literary theory, to history and cultural studies). It includes well-known contributors such as Julian Wolfreys, David Punter and Roger Luckhurst. This book explores the sense in which the uncanny may be a distinctively modern experience, the way these unnerving feelings and unsettling encounters disturb the rational presumptions of the modern world view and the security of modern self-identity, just as the latter may themselves be implicated in the production of these experiences as uncanny.

Reading Freud's Reading (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Sander L Gilman Reading Freud's Reading (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Sander L Gilman
R3,114 Discovery Miles 31 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Perhaps nothing is more revealing about a person than what he or she reads. In 1938, when Freud was forced by the Nazis to flee Vienna, he brought with him to London a large portion of his annotated personal library. "Reading Freud's Reading" is a guided tour of this library, the intellectual tools of the genius of Sigmund Freud.

Specialists from a wide range of areas--from the history of medicine, to literary scholarship, to the history of classical scholarship--spent two months working on questions raised by Freud's reading and his library at the Freud Museum in London. These specialists are joined here by internationally renowned scholars including Ned Lukatcher, Harold P. Blum, and Michael Molnar to apply a wide range of critical approaches, from depth psychoanalysis to cultural analysis. Together, they present a detailed look at the implications of how, and what, Freud read, including the major sources he used for his work.
