"Theory and Practice of Adlerian Psychology" delivers a comprehensive overview of the major works and theories of Alfred Adler, Viennese psychiatrist and founder of the school of individual psychology. This text presents an integrated analysis of Adler's outstanding findings and illustrations, which have been found to be both useful and practical by practitioners in psychotherapy. Adler's major accomplishments are integrated from a theoretical and philosophical perspective to help students analyze the threads of his intellectual and philosophical formulations for his theories. This fresh and exciting orientation to Alfred Adler's philosophy and theories is designed to foster research interest on the constructs of individual psychology (Adlerian Psychology). This is accomplished by providing an integrated platform for analyzing Adlerian theories against other prominent theories in psychotherapy. "Theory and Practice of Adlerian Psychology" is an ideal text for "Principles and Philosophies of Counseling" and "Lifestyle Assessment" courses, or anyone interested in learning more about how Alfred Adler's groundbreaking work changed the field of psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalysis, Politics and the Postmodern University (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Daniel Burston Psychoanalysis, Politics and the Postmodern University (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Daniel Burston
R2,517 Discovery Miles 25 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Critical theory draws on Marxism, psychoanalysis, postmodern and poststructuralist theorists. Marxism and psychoanalysis are rooted in the Enlightenment project, while postmodernism and poststructuralism are more indebted to Nietzsche, whose philosophy is rooted in anti-Enlightenment ideas and ideals. Marxism and psychoanalysis contributed mightily to our understanding of fascism and authoritarianism, but were distorted and disfigured by authoritarian tendencies and practices in turn. This book, written for clinicians and social scientists, explores these overarching themes, focusing on the reception of Freud in America, the authoritarian personality and American politics, Lacan's "return to Freud," Jordan Peterson and the Crisis of the Liberal Arts, and the anti-psychiatry movement.

The Goal Conflict Model of Eating Behavior - Selected Works of Wolfgang Stroebe (Hardcover): Wolfgang Stroebe The Goal Conflict Model of Eating Behavior - Selected Works of Wolfgang Stroebe (Hardcover)
Wolfgang Stroebe
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major practical theoretical contributions. In this volume: Overweight and obesity rates have increased dramatically in most industrialized countries, even though more and more people are chronically dieting. Dieters can manage to lose substantial amounts of weight while actively dieting, but most regain it within a few years. So why do most chronic dieters have such difficulty controlling their weight and why is there only a small minority of successful dieters? To address these questions, Stroebe developed the goal conflict model of eating behavior, a social cognitive theory that attributes the difficulty of chronic dieters to a conflict between two incompatible goals: eating enjoyment and weight control. Although chronic dieters are motivated to pursue their weight control goal, most fail in food-rich environments: Surrounded by palatable food cues that activate thoughts of eating enjoyment, incompatible weight control thoughts are inhibited and weight control intentions are "forgotten". For successful dieters - probably due to past success in exerting self-control - tasty high-calorie food has become associated with weight control thoughts. For them, exposure to palatable food makes weight control thoughts more accessible, enabling them to control their body weight in food-rich environments. This book contains the key articles of a research program by Stroebe and collaborators to assess the validity of this theory. They succeeded in tracing the processes that lead from temptation to a breakdown of dieting intentions. They also demonstrated that these theoretical principles can be used to develop effective weight loss interventions. The book should be of value for all researcgers, students and clinicians involved in obesity research and treatment.

Males, Females, and Behavior - Toward Biological Understanding (Hardcover, New): Lee Ellis, Linda Ebertz Males, Females, and Behavior - Toward Biological Understanding (Hardcover, New)
Lee Ellis, Linda Ebertz

In nine chapters, contributors explore how genetic, hormonal, and neurological factors affect the behavior of males and females within complex environmental settings. Based on the latest research, the essays theorize about the causes of variation in sex differences in behavior and related phenomena. Sex differences in behavior are examined as a cross-species phenomenon and as having numerous biological as well as environmental determinants.

Human Motivation and Interpersonal Relationships - Theory, Research, and Applications (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Netta Weinstein Human Motivation and Interpersonal Relationships - Theory, Research, and Applications (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Netta Weinstein
R5,064 Discovery Miles 50 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume summarizes and organizes a growing body of research supporting the role of motivation in adaptive and rewarding interpersonal interactions with others. The field of human motivation is rapidly growing but most studies have focused on the effects of motivation on individuals' personal happiness and task engagement. Only recently have theorists and empiricists begun to recognize that dispositional and state motivations impact the ways individuals approach interpersonal interactions. In addition, researchers are now recognizing that the quality of interpersonal interactions influences consequent happiness and task engagement, thus helping to explain previous findings to this end. Similarly social psychology and relationships researchers have focused on the impact of cognitions, emotions, and behaviors on people's relationships. In their work, relationships researchers demonstrate that both contextual characteristics and individual differences influence the quality of interactions. Many of these studies seek to understand which characteristics strengthen the bonds between people, encourage empathy and trust and create a sense of well-being after a close interaction. This work seeks to integrate the field of human motivation and interpersonal relationships. Both fields have seen extensive growth in the past decade and each can contribute to the other. However, no single compiled work is available that targets both fields. This is the case, in part because only now is there enough work to make a strong and compelling case for their integration. In the previous years, research has been conducted to show that motivation is relevant and important for interactions among strangers and in close relationships. In addition developmental mechanisms for these relations are identified and mechanisms by which motivation strengthens people's relationships. Finally recent work has demonstrated the many implications for interpersonal relationships, showing that motivation impacts a range of interpersonal processes from prejudice regulation and objectification of others to empathy and care. This book seeks to summarize and organize all these findings and present them in a way that is relevant to both motivation researchers and social and relationship researchers.

The Radical Humanism of Erich Fromm (Hardcover): K. Durkin The Radical Humanism of Erich Fromm (Hardcover)
K. Durkin
R3,501 Discovery Miles 35 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book, shortlisted for the British Sociological Association's Philip Abrams Memorial Prize (2015), argues that Fromm is a vital and largely overlooked contribution to twentieth-century intellectual history, and one who offers a refreshingly reconfigured form of humanism that is capable of reintegrating explicitly humanist analytical categories and schemas back into social theoretical (and scientific) considerations.

Affect, Emotion, and Children's Literature - Representation and Socialisation in Texts for Children and Young Adults... Affect, Emotion, and Children's Literature - Representation and Socialisation in Texts for Children and Young Adults (Hardcover)
Kristine Moruzi, Michelle Smith, Elizabeth Bullen
R4,479 Discovery Miles 44 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume explores the relationship between representation, affect, and emotion in texts for children and young adults. It demonstrates how texts for young people function as tools for emotional socialisation, enculturation, and political persuasion. The collection provides an introduction to this emerging field and engages with the representation of emotions, ranging from shame, grief, and anguish to compassion and happiness, as psychological and embodied states and cultural constructs with ideological significance. It also explores the role of narrative empathy in relation to emotional socialisation and to the ethics of representation in relation to politics, social justice, and identity categories including gender, ethnicity, disability, and sexuality. Addressing a range of genres, including advice literature, novels, picture books, and film, this collection examines contemporary, historical, and canonical children's and young adult literature to highlight the variety of approaches to emotion and affect in these texts and to consider the ways in which these approaches offer new perspectives on these texts. The individual chapters apply a variety of theoretical approaches and perspectives, including cognitive poetics, narratology, and poststructuralism, to the analysis of affect and emotion in children's and young adult literature.

Evolutionary Aesthetics (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Eckart Voland, Karl Grammer Evolutionary Aesthetics (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Eckart Voland, Karl Grammer
R4,421 Discovery Miles 44 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Evolutionary Aesthetics is the attempt to understand the aesthetic judgement of human beings and their spontaneous distinction between "beauty" and "ugliness" as a biologically adapted ability to make important decisions in life. The hypothesis is - both in the area of "natural beauty" and in sexuality, with regard to landscape preferences, but also in the area of "artificial beauty" (i.e. in art and design) - that beauty opens up fitness opportunities, while ugliness holds fitness risks. In this book, this adaptive view of aesthetics is developed theoretically, presented on the basis of numerous examples, and its consequences for evolutionary anthropology are illuminated.

Narcissism, Melancholia and the Subject of Community (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Barry Sheils, Julie Walsh Narcissism, Melancholia and the Subject of Community (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Barry Sheils, Julie Walsh
R2,684 Discovery Miles 26 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book brings together the work of scholars and writer-practitioners of psychoanalysis to consider the legacy of two of Sigmund Freud's most important metapsychological papers: 'On Narcissism: An Introduction' (1914) and 'Mourning and Melancholia' (1917 [1915]). These twin papers, conceived in the context of unprecedented social and political turmoil, mark a point in Freud's metapsychological project wherein the themes of loss and of psychic violence were becoming incontrovertible facts in the story of subject formation. Taking as their concern the difficulty of setting apart the 'inner' and the 'outer' worlds, as well as the difficulty of preserving an image of the coherently boundaried subject, the psychoanalytic frameworks of narcissism and melancholia provide the background coordinates for the volume's contributors to analyse contemporary subjectivities in new psychosocial contexts. This collection will be of great interest to all scholars and practitioners of psychoanalysis and the psychotherapies, social and cultural theory, gender and sexuality studies, politics, and psychosocial studies.

Ceremony of Innocence - Tears, Power and Protest (Hardcover): Kay Carmichael Ceremony of Innocence - Tears, Power and Protest (Hardcover)
Kay Carmichael
R2,868 Discovery Miles 28 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What use are tears? What is their purpose? In this book, the author argues that we underestimate the importance of this powerful means of communication. Tears are dismissed as a symbol of weakness when we should value them as a source of energy and creativity. In case histories, based on original research, she shows how, why, when and where human beings cry and the barriers placed in their way. By shaming people - particularly boy children and men - we also suppress human capacities to express tenderness and compassion for distress in ourselves and in others. Than can affect our health, our relationships and our capacity to protest against injustice.

A Psychology of Freedom and Dignity - The Last Train to Survival (Hardcover, New): E. Rae Harcum A Psychology of Freedom and Dignity - The Last Train to Survival (Hardcover, New)
E. Rae Harcum
R2,769 Discovery Miles 27 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Harcum maintains that the proper assumptions about human nature are established by their relative utility in solving existing human problems. In order to facilitate solutions to familiar problems of daily living, the author advocates a definition of the science of psychology that includes the concepts of human freedom and intrinsic dignity. The author emphasizes the importance of the free will concept to behavioral scientists and practitioners as well as to citizens of the general population who, perhaps without realizing it, are forced users of behavioral science. The author's intention is to show that our cherished beliefs in the concepts of freedom and dignity are consistent with scientific principles and thus will become a vital part of a scientifically designed culture.

Guide to Psychoanalytic Developmental Theories (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Joseph Palombo, Harold K. Bendicsen, Barry J. Koch Guide to Psychoanalytic Developmental Theories (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Joseph Palombo, Harold K. Bendicsen, Barry J. Koch
R5,354 Discovery Miles 53 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the foundational theory of modern psychological practice, psychoanalysis and its attendant assumptions predominated well through most of the twentieth century. The influence of psychoanalytic theories of development was profound and still resonates in the thinking and practice of today s mental health professionals. Guide to Psychoanalytic Developmental Theories provides a succinct and reliable overview of what these theories are and where they came from. Ably combining theory, history, and biography it summarizes the theories of Freud and his successors against the broader evolution of analytic developmental theory itself, giving readers a deeper understanding of this history, and of their own theoretical stance and choices of interventions. Along the way, the authors discuss criteria for evaluating developmental theories, trace persistent methodological concerns, and shed intriguing light on what was considered normative child and adolescent behavior in earlier eras.

Each major paradigm is represented by its most prominent figures such as Freud s drive theory, Erikson s life cycle theory, Bowlby s attachment theory, and Fonagy s neuropsychological attachment theory. For each, the Guide provides:

  • biographical information
  • a conceptual framework
  • contributions to theory
  • a clinical illustration or salient excerpt from their work.

The Guide to Psychoanalytic Developmental Theories offers a foundational perspective for the graduate student in clinical or school psychology, counseling, or social work. Seasoned psychiatrists, analysts, and other clinical practitioners also may find it valuable to revisit these formative moments in the history of the field."

Literature in Psychoanalysis - A Reader (Hardcover): Steven Vine Literature in Psychoanalysis - A Reader (Hardcover)
Steven Vine
R4,231 Discovery Miles 42 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since its foundation a little over a century ago, psychoanalysis has been fascinated by literature. Freud himself was fond of saying that poets were there before him, hinting that the findings of psychoanalysis were foreshadowed in works of literature. Sophocles's Oedipus Rex and Shakespeare's Hamlet are only the most famous literary works around which Freud developed his ideas - but literature appears 'in' psychoanalysis in the shape of Freud's brilliant and inventive storytelling, as well as in explicit theoretical themes. Literature in Psychoanalysis explores the ongoing dialogue between literature and psychoanalysis in contemporary essays that revisit and revise classic Freudian positions (such as Freud's and Jones's reading of Hamlet, and Freud's account of the 'uncanny') and consider literary treatments of the analytic (including Nicolas Abraham's remarkable 'Sixth Act' to Hamlet and Helene Cixous's feminist dramatization of Freud's 'Dora' case history in Portrait of Dora). The volume also presents the use of literary terms in the post-Freudian history of Freud's 'Wolf Man' through the stunning work of Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok on the Wolf Man's buried 'magic word'.Resisting the idea of 'applying' psychoanalytic theory to literature, Steve Vine's collection, along with his helpful introductory notes to each section and essay, shows the ways in which literature and psychoanalysis are involved with each other. It is an invaluable resource for teachers and students of literature and theory alike, and for all those with a general interest in the interaction between literature and psychoanalysis.

Marital Relationships and Parenting: Intimate relations and their correlates (Hardcover): Ami Rokach Marital Relationships and Parenting: Intimate relations and their correlates (Hardcover)
Ami Rokach
R4,484 Discovery Miles 44 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Romantic relationships, especially good ones, are desired of almost all humans. However, what makes such relationships good and nourishing? For the most part, it is the support and intimacy that exists within the couple, and their ability to experience life and face difficulties together. This book is divided into two sections, one focusing on the couple and their intimate relationship, and the other on how that relationship influences their offspring. Part one examines whether sacrificing in an intimate relationship is always beneficial and whether it help strengthen the marital/couple unit? Attachment theory has had a significant influence on how we view relationships in childhood as well as in adulthood. The book sheds light on the mechanisms that mediate attachment style and the quality of the intimate relationships, exploring the relationship between one's ability to express empathy and that person's ability to offer social support to his/her partner. The second part of the book explores what young adults think about marriage, influenced by their parental relationship; how parental relationships affect children's social experience in school; how parental approaches to children affect their sibling relationship; the parental role in childhood eating disturbances; and how the family climate affects children's loneliness. All in all, the book affords a thorough review not only of what marital/couple intimacy is and what can affect it, but how significant it is in affecting their children, in and out of the house. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Journal of Psychology.

Mourning and Creativity in Proust (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Anna Magdalena Elsner Mourning and Creativity in Proust (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Anna Magdalena Elsner
R3,521 Discovery Miles 35 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This study explores Proust's answers to some of the fundamental challenges of the inevitable human experience of mourning. Thinking mourning and creativity together allows for a fresh approach to the modernist novel at large, but also calls for a reassessment of the particular historical and social challenges faced by mourners at the beginning of the twentieth century. The book enables the reader to acknowledge loss and forgetting as an essential part of memory, and it proposes that this literary topos has seminal implications for an understanding of the ethics, aesthetics, and erotic in Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu. Drawing on the works of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Derrida, Anna Magdalena Elsner develops an original theory of how mourning and creativity are linked by emphasizing that ethical dilemmas are central to an understanding of the novel's final aesthetic apotheosis. This sheds new light on the enigmatic and versatile nature of mourning but also pays tribute to those fertile tensions and paradoxes that have made Proust's novel captivating for readers since its publication.
