Water Treasures of the Himalayas (Hardcover): Serge Verliat, Jean Philippe Water Treasures of the Himalayas (Hardcover)

R1,556 Discovery Miles 15 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A billion lives depend on the wayers of the Himalayas; sixty million live in this mountain range, while the rest live in its foothills, on the plains of the Indian subcontinent. For them, the Himalayas are a providential water tower. Despite their astonishing diversity, all these peoples share the common belief that this is a 'Sacred Land' and this mountain range is, above all, the 'Abode of Snow' where pure water springs, rivers gush and lakes are crystal-clear. In this mosaic of peoples, languages, religions and lands, water plays a vital part in the geographical distribution of the various ethnic groups, their social organization and the way they see themselves. With its stunning photographs and embedded videos, this volume offers an anthropological insight into the various bonds formed between man and water in the Himalayas. In doing so, it also stresses both the importance of this water tower of Asia, which provides for a thousand million people, and the scope of the current economic and ecologic issues that are at stake.

Farming - Growing the food that feeds us (Hardcover): Chris McNab Farming - Growing the food that feeds us (Hardcover)
Chris McNab
R537 Discovery Miles 5 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Farming – whether domestic crops, forestry, fish or livestock – is one of the pillars of human civilization, dating back to the early settlements of Neolithic times. Today, approximately one billion people work the land, providing food and other products for our ever-increasing human population. Arranged geographically, Farming explores the many types of farm and farming that exist today. See how farmers in Malaysia extract milky latex from the bark of rubber trees, used to make everything from protective gloves to vehicle tires; be amazed at the gorgeous stepped rice fields of Bali, where the traditional subak irrigation system is created around ‘water temples’ and managed by Hindu priests; marvel at the vast corn and soya bean fields of Ontario, much of it used for animal feed to support Canada’s beef industry; learn about nomadic pastoralism in low rainfall areas such as Somalia, where herders move camels, cattle, sheep and goats in search of grazing; explore the wineries and vineyards in Bordeaux, where more than 700 million bottles of wine are produced each year by more than 8,500 châteaux; and see how freshwater prawns are harvested for export in the watery deltas of Bangladesh. Presented in a landscape format and with more than 180 outstanding photographs of farming from every part of the planet, Farming offers a pictorial celebration of mankind’s deep connection with the land that sustains us.

Berlin Unseen (English, German, Hardcover): Martin U. Waltz Berlin Unseen (English, German, Hardcover)
Martin U. Waltz
R478 Discovery Miles 4 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Berlin Unseen is, like the first two parts of the Unseen series (London Unseen and New York Unseen), an authentic approach to the character of the German capital. At the same time, the images by Martin U. Waltz breathe the atmosphere of the metropolis on the Spree as authentically as few others. The star photographer of the German street photography scene has always been close to the pulse of the city; knows where Berlin life meets; in which places and squares the soul of the city is best reflected. Yet it is not the city's tourist highlights that interest Martin U. Waltz. It is the streets and the faces of the "real" Berlin, the hidden architecture, the backyards, party basements and subcultures of the city. His images smell and taste of Berlin, and not (only) of the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and TV Tower. Berlin Unseen thus becomes a photographic smorgasbord of glances, gestures, situations that capture the soul of Berlin. The city is seen from its edges, and at the same time from its innermost - an unprecedented view of probably the most moving metropolis in the world. Text in English and German.

Homage to the Bird (Hardcover): Greg Oakley Homage to the Bird (Hardcover)
Greg Oakley
R1,320 Discovery Miles 13 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"With 240 pages filled with incredible art, the bird lover will enjoy flipping through and taking in the vast distinctions between species in the bird kingdom." - Prevention Australian artist Greg Oakley has had a lifelong fascination with birds and bird art, and began photographing birds 20 years ago, progressing from traditional film to digital in the early 2000s. In the past six years, he has worked on perfecting the difficult and exacting area of bird photography known as "setup", where perches and backgrounds are meticulously crafted and designed, and lighting strictly controlled. There are sometimes hundreds of individual photographs taken and then digitally combined to create a single work. With a combination of photographic skill, field craft, meticulousness and incredible patience, he removes the subject from its natural environment and context, re-imagining it in a field-guide style reminiscent of the historic bird artists. Oakley's photographs represent a reconstructed contemporary vision of important historic artists such as Gould and Audubon. This collection of stunning artwork is a testament to the natural beauty of birds, highlighting the precarious existence of many endangered species and a reminder of the beauty we could lose. By isolating the subject into an unblemished reality, each species' character and beauty is celebrated with empathy and understanding. The resulting images provide both a rare glimpse in stunning detail of these delicate creatures, and a poignant reminder of the tragic, impending loss of many of them due to habitat loss and climate change.

The third volume in Marina Amaral and Dan Jones's bestselling Histories in Colour series.

A Woman's World explores the many roles – domestic, social, cultural and professional – played by women across the world from 1850–1960, before second-wave feminism took hold. Using Marina's colorized images and Dan Jones's words, this survey shines a light on the varied pursuits of women both celebrated and ordinary, whether in the home or the science lab, protesting on the streets or performing on stage, fighting in the trenches or exploring the wild.

Each chapter is introduced by a woman who works in that field, offering insights into their job and experiences. The book includes photographs of Queen Victoria, Edith Cavell, Josephine Baker, Mildred Burke, Eva Peron, Eleanor Roosevelt, Virginia Woolf, Clara Schumann, Martha Gellhorn, Simone de Beauvoir, Agatha Christie, Frida Kahlo, Emmeline Pankhurst, Harriet Tubman, Florence Nightingale, Hattie McDaniel and Gertrude Bell; as well as revolutionaries from China to Cuba, Geishas in Japan, protestors on the Salt March, teachers and pilots, nurses and soldiers.

This vivid and unique history brings to life and full color the female experience in a century of extraordinary change.

R434 Discovery Miles 4 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Franco-Swiss photographer Hélène Binet (b. 1959) is renowned for making images that express an intimate experience of architecture. Using a combination of analogue and digital techniques, her photographs are both a representation and a discovery of her subjects, all of them buildings that break the mould, pushing daringly at the boundaries of their time.   In this selection of some ninety of her photographs – ranging from the baroque London churches of Nicholas Hawksmoor and the Jantar Mantar Observatory in Jaipur through to buildings of contemporary architects Le Corbusier, Peter Zumthor, John Hejduk, Daniel Libeskind and Zaha Hadid – her work is revealed in all its subtlety and quiet sensitivity.

Bank Top (Hardcover): Craig Easton Bank Top (Hardcover)
Craig Easton
R1,356 Discovery Miles 13 560 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Easton's photographs, alongside texts by writer, poet and social researcher Abdul Aziz Hafiz, aim to confront stereotypes and question the dangerous over-simplification of the challenges facing such communities. They do so by presenting the contemporary experience of residents as an 'alternative history telling'. The black and white photographs in the book were all made in an area less than half a mile square in Blackburn during 2019 and 2020. Working with a large-format wooden field camera, Easton spent long days and weeks in the neighbourhood talking to residents and sometimes making pictures. The project melds image and text - Easton's portraiture and landscapes combined with poetry and an essay by Aziz Hafiz and with the testimonies of residents. This long-form collaboration acknowledges the issues and impacts of social deprivation, housing, unemployment, immigration and representation, as well as past and present foreign policy. The result is a collective and nuanced portrait of the town - a sensitive response to the oversimplistic representation of such communities in both the media and by government, which deny the right of Bank Top to tell its own story.

Thatcher's Children (Hardcover): Craig Easton Thatcher's Children (Hardcover)
Craig Easton

Thatcher’s Children was born out of a series first made in 1992 focusing on two parents and six children living in a hostel for homeless families in Blackpool, England. The project was made in response to a speech by Peter Lilley, then Secretary of State for Social Security, in which he announced his determination to ‘close down the something-for-nothing society.’ French newspaper Libération dispatched a journalist to northern England to find out what this society looked like, and Easton was commissioned to take the accompanying photographs. His resulting monochrome images of the overcrowded two-bedroom council flat in Blackpool sparked a reaction by both the public and the press. His images attached human faces and nuanced realities to a group of people casually maligned by politicians and media as an ‘underclass of scroungers.’
