The significance of the media and communications revolution
occasioned by printmaking was profound. Less a part of the standard
narrative of printmaking's significance is recognition of the
frequency with which the widespread dissemination of printed works
also occurred beyond the borders of Europe and consideration of the
impact of this broader movement of printed objects. Within a decade
of the invention of the Gutenberg press, European prints began to
move globally. Over the course of the fifteenth to the eighteenth
centuries, numerous prints produced in Europe traveled to areas as
varied as Turkey, India, Iran, Ethiopia, China, Japan and the
Americas, where they were taken by missionaries, artists,
travelers, merchants and diplomats. This collection of essays
explores the global circulation of knowledge, both written and
visual, that occurred by means of prints in the Early Modern
period.
Dinosaur skeletons, eggs, bones, and fossils have become
increasingly coveted objects for collectors. Dinosaurs are
Collectible explores the reasons for their popularity and tells the
stories behind the many illustrious finds from the past. This
beautifully illustrated and printed publication by the author of
Wonders are Collectible and Wunderkammer includes a chapter devoted
to dinosaurs in both high and popular culture, and features an
exceptional collection of prints, photos, drawings, and micrograph
scans.

Literature as Document considers the relationship between documents
and literary texts in Western Literature of the 1930s. More
specifically, the volume deals with the notion of the "document"
and its multifaceted and complex connections to literary "texts"
and attempts to provide answers to the problematic nature of that
relationship. In an effort to determine a possible theoretical
definition, many different disciplines have been taken into
account, as well as individual case studies. In order to observe
dynamics and trends, the idea for this investigation was to look at
literature, taking its practices, its factual-looking and concrete
applications, as a point of departure - that is to say, then,
starting from the literary object itself.
Rachel Owen's hauntingly beautiful illustrations for Dante's
Inferno take a radically new approach to representing the world of
Dante's famous poem. The images combine the artist's deep cultural
and historical understanding of 'The Divine Comedy' and its
artistic legacy with her unique talent for collage and printmaking.
These illustrations, casting the viewer as a first-person pilgrim
through the underworld, prompt us to rethink Dante's poem through
their novel perspective and visual language. Owen's work, held in
the Bodleian Library and published here for the first time,
illustrates the complete cycle of thirty-four cantos of the Inferno
with one image per canto. The illustrations are accompanied by
essays contextualising Owen's work and supplemented by six
illustrations intended for the unfinished Purgatorio series. Fiona
Whitehouse provides details of the techniques employed by the
artist, Peter Hainsworth situates Owen's work in the field of
modern Dante illustration and David Bowe offers a commentary on the
illustrations as gateways to Dante's poem. Jamie McKendrick and
Bernard O'Donoghue's translations of episodes from the 'Inferno'
provide complementary artistic interpretations of Dante's poem,
while reflections from colleagues and friends commemorate Owen's
life and work as an artist, scholar and teacher. This stunning
collection is an important contribution to both Dante scholarship
and illustration.

Print Index: A Guide to Reproductions is designed to aid the user
in locating illustrations of prints dating from the early
eighteenth century through the mid-1970s. It contains data on and
provides access to many thousands of prints by more than twenty-one
hundred printmakers found in one hundred English-language
monographs and exhibition and collection catalogues. The Print
Index lists works alphabetically by title under the artist or
artists. The entries identify the printmaker, the title of the
work, the date, the print technique used, and the publications
(books or catalogues) in which a reproduction of the print appears.
An index references the prints by subject and title where the title
is distinctive or expressive.

Using the Archives of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers at
the Bankside Gallery, London, this book tells the story of the
struggles of the Society to obtain official recognition for the
merits of original etchers and engravers, who had been treated as
an inferior class of the Royal Academy (they restricted membership
to Painters, Sculptors and Architects from its foundation in 1768).
Expressive Printmaking goes back to first principles to rediscover
the full potential of printmaking. Through introducing a
tantalizing array of techniques, it shows the artist how to
communicate stories and emotions through dynamic prints that sing
off the page. It covers printing by hand and by press and
techniques range from paper dry point to Mokulito and from
monoprint to plaster cast impressions. It also explains how to
combine techniques and gives advice on line, tone, form, colour and
texture. Along with step-by-step projects and some 500
illustrations, this exciting book leads you to create unique prints
that challenge you technically, inspire you visually and encourage
you to try more.

lives by the sea in Sussex and much of her work continues to be
inspired by the beautiful landscapes surrounding her. This
colourful linoprint was created using the reduction method, which
involves progressively cutting, inking up, and printing from the
same block. THE FINAL WORD. As William Morris said, "Have nothing

The names of plants that are so familiar to us magnolia,
bougainvillea, sequioa may just be names, but behind the names lie
stories of espionage and heroism, rivalry and mystery and
inspiration. In the Name of Plants relates the stories of these
people and the plants that were named after them. Each chapter
tells the story of the person for which each plant is named, many
of whom were pioneering explorers, collectors and botanists - such
as Alice Eastwood who has the yellow aster, Eastwoodia elegans,
named after her. Eastwood explored previously uncharted territories
in the 19th century and famously saved the California Academy of
Science's priceless plant collection from the 1906 San Francisco
earthquake. Subjects range from Charles Darwin (Darwinia) and
legendary French botanist Pierre Magnol (Magnolia), to US founding
fathers George Washington (Washingtonia) and Benjamin Franklin
(Franklinia). Each entry is accompanied by superb artworks from the
Library of the Natural History Museum, as well as photography of
specimens and wild plants and the essential taxonomic details and
geographic spread for each species.

Ebner-Eschenbach This book has been written as an aid to anyone in
the print media industry, be they managers or customers, who is
looking to steer their business into calmer waters in what are
stormy times. New technologies offer tremendous opportunities for
innovation and process improvement - but only if we understand the
fundamental principles behind them. This is the goal of this book.
To this end, we will be looking at how best to network the print
media industry with its customers, production partners and
suppliers. This networking process covers the production data that
can be transferred entirely digitally as far as the press stage, i.
e. the digital page to be printed (referred to below as the
"technical work?ow"), but also the information, communication and
interaction processes which take place before, during and after
production, e. g. details of the print run or the planned delivery
date (referred to below as the "business management work?ow").

Internet technology is known as "e-business" in commercial and
management circles. Customers Print media Suppliers companies

Copper Plate Photogravure describes in comprehensive detail the
technique of traditional copper plate photogravure as would be
practiced by visual artists using normally available facilities and
materials. Attention is paid to step-by-step guidance through the
many stages of the process. A detailed manual of technique, Copper
Plate Photogravure also offers the history of the medium and
reference to past alternative methods of practice. Copper Plate
Photogravure: Demystifying the Process is part of the current
revitalization of one of the most satisfyingly beautiful
image-making processes. The range of ink color and paper quality
possibilities is endless. The potential for handwork and alteration
of the copper plate provides yet another realm of expressive
variation. The subject matter and the treatment are as variable and
broad as photography itself. This book's purpose is to demystify
and clarify what is a complex but altogether "do-able"
photomechanical process using currently available materials. With
Copper Plate Photogravure, you will learn how to: * produce a
full-scale film positive from a photographic negative * sensitize
the gravure tissue to prepare it for exposure to the positive *
prepare the plate and develop the gelatin resist prior to etching *
prepare the various strengths of etching solutions and etch the
plate to achieve a full tonal scale * rework the plate using
printmaking tools to correct flaws or to adjust the image for
aesthetic reasons * use the appropriate printing inks, ink
additives, quality papers, and printshop equipment to produce a
high quality print A historical survey and appendices of detailed
technical information, charts, and tables are included, as well as
a list of suppliers and sources for the materials required, some of
which are highly specialized. A comprehensive glossary introduces
the non-photographer or non-printmaker to many of the terms
particular to those fields and associated with this process.
