God, as depicted in popular evangelical literature, is loving and
friendly, described in heartfelt, often saccharine prose evocative
of nostalgia, comfortable domesticity, and familial love. This
emotional appeal is a widely-adopted strategy of the writers most
popular among American evangelicals, including such high-profile
pastors as Max Lucado, Rick Warren, and Joel Osteen. Todd M.
Brenneman offers an in-depth examination of this previously
unexplored aspect of American evangelical identity: sentimentality,
which aims to produce an emotional response by appealing to
readers' notions of familial relationships, superimposed on their
relationship with God. Brenneman argues that evangelicals use
sentimentality to establish authority in the public
sphere-authority that is, by its emotional nature, unassailable by
rational investigation. Evangelicals also deploy sentimentality to
try to bring about change in society, though, as Brenneman shows,
the sentimental focus on individual emotion and experience can
undermine the evangelical agenda. Sentimentality not only allows
evangelicals to sidestep intellectual questioning, but sets the
stage for doctrinal change as well as weakening the evangelical
vision of transforming society into the kingdom of God.

This volume approaches the Word of Faith as a worldview, and
analyses the movement through N. T. Wright's model for
worldview-analysis in order to provide necessary nuance and
complexity to scholarly interpretations of the Word of Faith. The

revivalists as Victorian hold-outs bent on re-establishing

Josh McMullen argues that rather than mere dour opposition, big
tent revivalists participated in the shift away from Victorianism
and helped in the construction of a new consumer culture in the
United States between the 1880s and the 1920s. McMullen also seeks
to answer the question of how the United States became the most
consumer-driven and yet one of the most religious societies in the
western world. Early critics and historians of consumer culture
concluded that Americans' increasing search for physical, mental,
and emotional well-being came at the expense of religious belief,
yet evangelical Christianity grew alongside the expanding consumer
culture throughout the twentieth century. A study of big tent
revivalism helps resolve this dilemma: revivalists and their
audiences combined the Protestant ethic of salvation with the
emerging consumer ethos by cautiously unlinking Christianity from
Victorianism and linking it with the new, emerging consumer
culture. This innovative, revisionist work helps us to understand
the continued appeal of both the therapeutic and salvific
worldviews to many Americans as well as the ambivalence that
accompanies this combination.
