This is a much-revised version of Professor Cottret's acclaimed study of the Huguenot communities in England, first published in French by Aubier in 1985. The Huguenots in England presents a detailed, sympathetic assessment of one of the great migrations of early modern Europe, examining the social origins, aspirations and eventual destiny of the refugees, and their responses to their new-found home, a Protestant terre d'exil. Bernard Cottret shows how for the poor weavers, carders and craftsmen who constituted the majority of the exiles the experience of religious persecution was at once personal calamity, disruptive of home and family, and heaven-sent economic opportunity, which many were quick to exploit. The individual testimonies contained in consistory registers contain a wealth of personal narrative, reflection and reaction, enabling Professor Cottret to build a fully rounded picture of the Huguenot experience in early modern England. In an extended afterword Professor Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie considers the Huguenot phenomenon in the wider context of the contrasting British and French attitudes to religious minorities in the early modern period.

This book examines the evolution of post-colonial African Studies through the eyes of Africanists from the Anabaptist (Mennonite and Church of the Brethren) community. English Christendom has never been a static entity. Evangelism, politics, conflict and cultural changes have constantly and consistently developed it into myriad forms across the world. However, in recent times that development has seemingly become a general decline. The convocation records of the Churches of England and Ireland are the principal source of our information about the administration of those churches from middle ages until modern times. They contain the minutes of clergy synods, the legislation passed by them, tax assessments imposed by the king on the clergy, and accounts of the great debates about religious reformation; they also include records of heresy trials in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, many of them connected with the spread of Lollardy. However, they have never before been edited or published in full, and their publication as a complete set of documents provides a valuable resource for scholarship. This volume reconstructs the history of the convocation in the early years of Henry VIII and reproduces the abstracts made of the records from 1529 onwards, which were burnt in the great fire of London in 1666. Of particular interest are the notes of Peter Heylyn, which were only rediscovered in 1999, and have never been printed before. Also included are the canons and articles of religion passed by convocation in the sixteenth century.

The first book to address the role of correspondence in the study of religion, Debating the Faith: Religion and Letter Writing in Great Britain, 1550-1800 shows how letters shaped religious debate in early-modern and Enlightenment Britain, and discusses the materiality of the letters as well as questions of form and genre. Religious Dissent (which Dr Routley takes to include all free Church denominations) is as English an institution as the House of Commons. That it was not always so is well enough known; why it became so is not. The Dissenters have never been adept at public relations, and many who are ignorant of their faith regard them as an uncomely - though worthy - body of men. This historical portrait does not paint out their blemishes; but it does give attention to their virtues. The main purpose is to show the changing nature of Dissent and what it has dissented against. Dr Routley does not trace the history of each denomination: he is concerned rather with the overall pattern of non-conformity. However, he gives special attention to the early origins of Puritanism and he re-examines in detail the cultural and intellectual 'Dissent' of the Reformation, in which the English dissenting tradition has its roots.

Feminist critics have frequently been uncomfortable with the fact that conservative religious beliefs created opportunities for women to write with independent agency. All these questions are answered in Mr Brown's book; a dazzling performance, and an enlightening one.

The early Quaker movement was remarkable for its prolific use of the printing press. Carefully orchestrated by a handful of men and women who were the movement's leaders, printed tracts were an integral feature of the rapid spread of Quaker ideas in the 1650s. Drawing on very rich documentary evidence, this book examines how and why Quakers were able to make such effective use of print. As a crucial element in an extensive proselytising campaign, printed tracts enabled the emergence of the Quaker movement as a uniform, national phenomenon. The book explores the impressive organization underpinning Quaker pamphleteering and argues that the early movement should not be dismissed as a disillusioned spiritual remnant of the English Revolution, but was rather a purposeful campaign which sought, and achieved, effective dialogue with both the body politic and society at large.

Mike Bickle has known both the exhilaration and the confusion caused by ministry focused on the exercise of spiritual gifts. In 1853 the Council of King's College, London declared that the references to future punishment in Maurice's Theological Essays were of 'dangerous tendency', and they advised the severance of Maurice's connection with the College. There, is now a lectureship established at King's College in his honour. Dr Wood here studies Maurice's life and thought in relation to the turbulent religious and social movements of his own times, 'but my chief reason [Dr Wood adds] is a conviction that his principles are peculiarly relevant to our, own age. This book is a study of the relationship between ideology and social behaviour. Professor Crew analyses the attitudes and characters of the Calvinist ministers who preached in the Netherlands in the mid-sixteenth century and their effect on the popular religious upheavals which occurred during the summer of 1566. The hedge-preaching and iconoclasm which erupted in the period before the Dutch Revolt have been the subject of considerable speculation among historians, who have have developed a variety of interpretations of these events. Professor Crew views the Troubles in the broader context of the international Calvinist movement and iconoclastic violence in France and England. She questions whether the Netherlands ministers were clearly and strongly Calvinist, whether they shared specific characteristics of personality, social status or education, and whether they were 'charismatic leaders' in the sense given to the term by Max Weber.

The late William C. Braithwaite's Second Period of Quakerism was first published in 1919, and reprinted with corrections in 1921. This edition incorporates some changes of detail in the text and a large appendix of new matter by Henry J. Cadbury. Braithwaite's earlier volume The Beginnings of Quakerism was reissued in a similar form in 1955. The standard history of the first seventy-five years of Quakerism is thus available again.

This is an account, from the original sources, of the early history of Quakerism, founded in England at the time of the Puritan revolution and the struggle for religious liberty. It is in part an account of its founder, George Fox, son of a weaver and apprentice to a shoemaker, whose learning extended little further than the pages of the Bible, but whose complete possession by this fresh truth transcended limitations of birth, health, education or occupation. It is also the account of Fox's disciples: James Naylor, William Dewsbury, Richard Farnsworth, Margaret Fell, and others who carried the word on as the movement gained force - of their conversion, their strength of conviction, and the punishments they were frequently forced to endure by those whom their faith outraged.
