A Quest for Security is the first book-length biography of Samuel
Parris, the man who led the 1692 struggle against the scourge of
witchcraft. While an examination of Samuel Parris's actions reveals
his crucial part in the witchcraft crisis, this biography also
serves as a reminder of the concern of early Americans to sustain
economic independence for their families. Fully documented with
endnotes and featuring a complete bibliography of primary and
secondary works, this volume fills a noticeable gap in the
literature on Salem witchcraft. The first chapter looks at Samuel
Parris's early years. Born in London in 1653, Parris moved with his
family to Barbados in the 1660s where both his uncle and father had
prospered as sugar planters. Next, the book examines his stay in
Boston where he met with modest success as a merchant and started a
family. The book then recounts the eight years Parris spent in
Salem Village as that divided community's pastor. Beginning with
his "call to the clergy," the book examines his life as a Puritan
pastor, and then covers the conflict in his congregation. In the
first year of his ministry, a faction had developed that sought to
oust Parris by refusing to pay him. Next the book covers Parris's
actions in the spring of 1692 which changed a seemingly ordinary
case of a handful of accusations into a full-scale witchhunt.
Convinced that an organized witch cult threatened his congregation,
Parris sought to root out all conspirators. His leadership in the
effort led to an ever increasing escalation of accusations. When
the episode finally ended, family members of some of the twenty
executed "witches" conducted a campaign that ultimately resulted in
Parris's removalfrom the pulpit. The final chapter looks at
Parris's last years, in which he moved from one small Massachusetts
community to another. Parris died in obscurity in 1720. But he
achieved his most important goal--that of providing material
security for his children.
This book argues against the conventional idea that Protestantism
effectively ceased to play an important role in American higher
education around the end of the 19th century. Employing Princeton
as an example, the study shows that Protestantism was not abandoned
but rather modified to conform to the educational values and
intellectual standards of the modern university. Drawing upon a
wealth of neglected primary sources, Kemeny sheds new light on the
role of religion in higher education by examining what was
happening both inside and outside the classroom, and by
illustrating that religious and secular commitments were not neatly
divisible but rather commingled.
Timothy Connor shows how Donald MacKinnon's extension concept of
kenosis to the doctrine of the Church offers a critical corrective
to ecclesiological triumphalism. This book explores those aspects
of Donald MacKinnon's theological writings which challenge the
claim of the liberal Catholic tradition in the Church of England to
have forged an ecclesiological consensus, namely that the Church is
the extension of the incarnation. MacKinnon destabilized this claim
by exposing the wide gulf between theory and practice in that
church, especially in his own Anglo-Catholic tradition within it.
For him the collapse of Christendom is the occasion for a
dialectical reconstruction of the relation of the Church to Jesus
Christ and to the world on the basis of the gospel. His basic claim
is that authentic ecclesial existence must correspond with what was
revealed and effected by Jesus along his way from Galilee to
Jerusalem to Galilee. Reflection on the Church thus takes the form
of a lived response shaped by a Christocentric grammar of faith:
the submission of the church to Jesus' contemporaneous
interrogation, a sustained attentiveness to him and the willing
embrace of his 'hour'. "T&T Clark Studies in Systematic

doctrine, with a particular focus on constructive engagement with
major topics through historical analysis or contemporary
restatement.
This first volume of a two volume edition contains letters written
between 1727 and 1756 by the famous hymn writer, poet, and
co-founder of Methodism, Charles Wesley (1707-1788), Volume 2 will
contain letters written between 1757 and 1788. The edition brings
together texts which are located in libraries and archives from
across the globe and here presents them as a complete collection
for the first time - many of the letters have never been previously
published. The appended notes help the reader locate the letters in
their proper historical and literary context and provide full
information regarding the location of the original source and,
where possible, something of its provenance.
These texts provide an intimate glimpse into the world of early
Methodism and Charles' own struggles and triumphs as a central
figure within it. They collectively document the story of Charles
Wesley's early experiences as he sought to find his own place in
Methodism and, of key importance for Charles, Methodism's place in
the wider purposes of God. Here are letters of a theological kind,
letters that reflect on his experiences as an itinerant preacher,
letters that show something of his rather unsettled personality and
letters that relate to his own personal and domestic circumstances.
Here we see something of the inner workings of a nascent religious
group. These are not sanitised accounts written by those looking
back, but first-hand accounts written from the heart of a lived
experience.
While this book will naturally appeal to those who have a
specialist interest in the early history of Methodism, for others
there is much to be gained from the picture it gives of the wider
eighteenth-century world in which Charles and his co-religionists
worked and lived.

This is a systematic study of how a congregational conflict
involving allegations of sexual harassment and power abuse against
a minister was seriously mishandled by church authorities. The
conflict escalated to entangle regional and national authorities
and worked its way into the civil courts. Stockton focuses on the
interaction of organizational dynamics and ill-defined Christian
concepts (such as reconciliation and discipline), showing that in
conflict situations the ideals of pastoral care are squeezed by an
organizational mentality. Key themes involve the role of women in
the church, the complex question of sexual harassment, and the
interface between church law and civil law. The narrative, which is
based on interviews and official documents, captures the human
dimensions of the story while simultaneously giving unique insight
into congregational disputes and organizational behavior.
