Narrative Therapy - Making Meaning, Making Lives (Hardcover): Catrina Brown, Tod Augusta-Scott Narrative Therapy - Making Meaning, Making Lives (Hardcover)
Catrina Brown, Tod Augusta-Scott
R3,694 Discovery Miles 36 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"This volume is especially useful in demonstrating the effects of placing social discourses at the center of therapy. It gores many sacred cows of the larger modernist therapeutic community, but in doing so it offers new ideas for mental health professionals attempting to help their clients with common and serious life problems." -PSYCRITIQUES "This compilation is an insightful read for practitioners who have not taken the opportunity to use narrative therapy in practice...Experienced practitioners will certainly appreciate the theoretical analysis offered by the writers as well as the opportunity for reflective practice. Narrative Therapy is a meaningful contribution to a Canadian book market lacking in clinical literature for social workers" -CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS Narrative Therapy: Making Meaning, Making Lives offers a comprehensive introduction to and critique of narrative therapy and its theories. This edited volume introduces students to the history and theory of narrative therapy. Authors Catrina Brown and Tod Augusta-Scott situate this approach to theory and practice within the context of various feminist, post-modern and critical theories. Through the presentation of case studies, Narrative Therapy: Making Meaning, Making Lives shows how this narrative-oriented theory can be applied in the client-therapist experience. Many important therapeutic situations (abuse, addictions, eating disorders, and more) are addressed from the narrative perspective. Rooted in social constructionism, and emerging initially from family therapy, narrative therapy emphasizes the idea that we live storied lives. Within this approach, the editors and contributors seek to show how we make sense of our lives and experiences by ascribing meaning through stories which themselves arise within social conversations and culturally available discourses. Our stories don't simply represent us or mirror lived events; they actually constitute us-shaping our lives as well as our relationships. Narrative Therapy will be a valuable supplemental textbook for theory and practice courses in departments of Counseling and Psychotherapy and of Social Work as well as for courses in Gender and Women Studies.

Transcultural Psychiatry (Hardcover): John L. Cox Transcultural Psychiatry (Hardcover)
John L. Cox
R3,484 Discovery Miles 34 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the 1980s, transcultural psychiatry was a developing field which was commanding increasing attention for three major reasons. First, many societies were becoming more and more multicultural, and therefore professional health workers needed to be aware of the needs and background of ethnic groups, as well as to be familiar with their own cultural assumptions. Secondly, the study of psychiatric illness across cultures can illuminate features of such an illness in our own society. Thirdly, the way in which racism may initiate or sustain psychiatric disorder had become a topic essential to a present-day understanding of transcultural psychiatry. Originally published in 1986, this book provides a review of many such aspects of transcultural psychiatry. It is written at a level suitable for mental health professionals, including trainee psychiatrists, but would also interest students and other qualified staff, including psychologists, nurses, social workers and other professional workers concerned with race relations and the provision of psychiatric services for ethnic groups.

Addiction and Brain Damage (Paperback): Derek Richter Addiction and Brain Damage (Paperback)
Derek Richter
R1,188 Discovery Miles 11 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1980, recent research had produced new insights into how, at the biochemical level, alcohol and other drugs of abuse can impair metabolic and neuropsychiatric functions. Epidemiological studies were also demonstrating that even moderate drinking or drug abuse can produce significant brain damage. This book draws together the latest biochemical, physiological and clinical research on these topics at the time. The initial chapters discuss how alcohol can interfere with various functions: the adaptability of metabolic processes as governed by the ability of the liver to synthesise new enzymes, cell membrane transport, nervous transmission and the transport of nutrients into the brain. It is suggested that opiates, and possibly alcohol, may affect the endorphin system by blocking the uptake of specific amino acids. The second half of the book reports clinical investigations using biochemical studies, psychological tests, EEG investigations and Computerised Axial Tomography (CAT) scanning. It gives the first report of a long-term study by Lishman and co-workers using an improved tomography technique to assess brain damage in alcoholics. These studies give convincing evidence that heavy drinking, even at socially-acceptable levels, can cause serious brain damage in vulnerable people.

Aspects of Psychopharmacology (Paperback): David J. Sanger, Derek E. Blackman Aspects of Psychopharmacology (Paperback)
David J. Sanger, Derek E. Blackman
R795 Discovery Miles 7 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The study of drug effects on behaviour and psychological processes has a long history. Developments in the decade prior to first publication had been based on a more adequate synthesis than hitherto of psychology and pharmacology, and as a result great progress was made in establishing psychopharmacology as an interdisciplinary subject in its own right. Undergraduate courses in departments of psychology and pharmacology were increasingly including some coverage of this material, but there was a paucity of texts suitable at this level at the time. Originally published in 1984, this book was designed to provide broad coverage of psychopharmacology, with the minimum necessary focus on basic pharmacology and with carefully chosen subjects which are still likely to be of interest to psychology undergraduates and in which good empirical work is available for discussion at that level. The emphasis throughout the book is on the needs of psychology students, but the contents will also interest pharmacology students.

Emotion Regulation and Well-Being (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Ivan Nyklicek, Ad Vingerhoets, Marcel Zeelenberg Emotion Regulation and Well-Being (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Ivan Nyklicek, Ad Vingerhoets, Marcel Zeelenberg
R5,748 R4,335 Discovery Miles 43 350 Save R1,413 (25%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Emotion is a basic phenomenon of human functioning, most of the time having an adaptive value enhancing our effectiveness in pursuing our goals in the broadest sense. Regulation of these emotions, however, is essential for adaptive functioning, and suboptimal or dysfunctional emotion regulation may even be counterproductive and result in adverse consequences, including a poor well-being and ill health. This volume provides a state-of-the art overview of issues related to the association between emotion regulation and both mental and physical well-being. It covers various areas of research highly relevant to both researchers in the field and clinicians working with emotion regulation issues in their practice. Included topics are arranged along four major areas: * (Neuro-)biological processes involved in the generation and regulation of emotions * Psychological processes and mechanisms related to the link between emotion regulation and psychological well-being as well as physical health * Social perspective on emotion regulation pertaining to well-being and social functioning across the life span * Clinical aspects of emotion regulation and specific mental and physical health problems This broad scope offers the possibility to include research findings and thought-provoking views of leading experts from different fields of research, such as cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology, psychophysiology, social psychology, and psychiatry on specific topics such as nonconscious emotion regulation, emotional body language, self-control, rumination, mindfulness, social sharing, positive emotions, intergroup emotions, and attachment in their relation to well-being and health. Chapters are based on the "Fourth International Conference on the (Non) Expression of Emotions in Health and Disease" held at Tilburg University in October 2007. In 2007 Springer published "Emotion Regulation: Conceptual and Clinical Issues" based on the Third International Conference on the (Non) Expression of Emotion in Health and Disease," held at Tilburg University in October 2003. It is anticipated that, depending on sales, we may continue to publish the advances deriving from this conference.

Case Studies in Clinical Psychological Science - Bridging the Gap from Science to Practice (Hardcover): William O'Donohue,... Case Studies in Clinical Psychological Science - Bridging the Gap from Science to Practice (Hardcover)
William O'Donohue, Scott O. Lilienfeld
R3,725 Discovery Miles 37 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the past few decades clinical science has emerged as a prominent model for training and practice in clinical psychology. This model emphasizes evidence derived from high-quality research and is consistent with the increasingly influential evidence-based movement in medicine, which is a vital step toward making psychotherapy more effective, efficient, and safe. Despite this trend, much current psychological practice is not evidence-based; moreover, there is a marked dearth of resources available to train students and assist practitioners with the challenging goal of translating science into practice. Case Studies in Clinical Psychological Science demonstrates in detail how the clinical science model can be applied to actual cases. Edited by Professors William O'Donohue and Scott O. Lilienfeld, this book's unique structure presents dialogues between leading clinical researchers regarding the treatment of a wide variety of psychological problems, from depression and Alzheimer's disease to Panic Disorder and chronic pain. Chapters describe what evidence-based practice consists of for various clinical problems and are followed by commentary sections in which other leading clinical researchers analyze the case at hand, pointing out additional assessment and treatment options and controversial issues. The chapter authors then reply to the commentary in response sections. By examining the application of scientifically based interventions to actual cases and modeling thoughtful and collegial discussion among prominent clinical researchers, Case Studies in Clinical Psychological Science will assist students, practitioners, and clinical researchers with the crucial task of applying research evidence to psychotherapy and bridging the gap between science and practice.

Managing Intense Emotions and Overcoming Self-Destructive Habits - A Self-Help Manual (Paperback): Lorraine Bell Managing Intense Emotions and Overcoming Self-Destructive Habits - A Self-Help Manual (Paperback)
Lorraine Bell
R1,046 Discovery Miles 10 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is borderline personality disorder and what can people with borderline problems do to help themselves?
The treatment of personality disorder is a major concern facing current mental health services. Specialist therapies are often not available and many people with these problems drop out of treatment. Managing Intense Emotions and Overcoming Self-Destructive Habits is a self-help manual for people who would meet the diagnosis of 'emotionally unstable' or 'borderline personality disorder' (BPD), outlining a brief intervention which is based on a model of treatment known to be effective for other conditions, such as anxiety, depression and bulimia.
The manual describes the problem areas, the skills needed to overcome them and how these skills can be developed. It is designed to be used with the help of professional mental health staff, ideally in a group with individual sessions to support and coach the person in the application of the skills taught. A minimum of 24 and maximum of 36 sessions are recommended. Areas covered include:
* the condition and controversy surrounding the diagnosis of BPD
* drug and alcohol misuse
* emotional dysregulation and the role of thinking habits and beliefs
* depression and difficult mood states
* childhood abuse and relationship difficulties
* anger management.
Borderline personality disorder is a complex and challenging condition. This manual aims to explain the problems experienced by people who may be given this diagnosis in a way that clients and staff can easily understand. It will be essential reading for people with BPD and professionals involved in their care - psychologists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatrists and occupational therapists.

Belonging, Therapeutic Landscapes, and Networks - Implications for Mental Health Practice (Hardcover): Ezra Griffith Belonging, Therapeutic Landscapes, and Networks - Implications for Mental Health Practice (Hardcover)
Ezra Griffith
R3,753 Discovery Miles 37 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why are certain places perceived to be therapeutic, to make people feel better about life, about themselves, and about their bodies? Could there be environmental, individual, societal, and attachment factors that come together in the healing process in both traditional and non-traditional landscapes? This observation is particularly important and has implications for the understanding of both healing and disruption in the lives of individuals. In Belonging, Therapeutic Landscapes, and Networks, Dr. Griffith examines factors that influence the intersection of health and place, one's sense of belonging, and the constructing of therapeutic spaces that minimize psychosocial disruption in our daily lives.

The Basal Ganglia V (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Chihiro Ohye, Minoru Kimura, John S. McKenzie The Basal Ganglia V (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Chihiro Ohye, Minoru Kimura, John S. McKenzie
R8,220 Discovery Miles 82 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume, The Basal Ganglia V, is derived from proceedings of the fifth Triennial Meeting of the International Basal Ganglia Society (IBAGS). The Meeting was held from 23-26 May, 1995, at Nemuno-Sato, in the Mie Prefecture of central Japan, not far from the traditional birth place of the country. As at previous Meetings, our aim was to hear and discuss new ideas and data on the Basal Ganglia. About one hundred papers were presented, on platform or as posters. We had valuable talks, stimulating discussions, and agreeable social contacts. Although just before this Meeting, there were several unusual accidents in Japan, a big earthquake in the Kobe area, not far from the Meeting place, and toxic gas terrorism in Tokyo, some hundred participants came from Europe, the United States, and elsewhere. All through the Meeting days, we were together in a beautiful environment, surrounded by fresh green vegetation, flowers and blue sea, as has been traditional for IBAGS meetings. We spent happy and pleasant sunny days there, with superb accommodation and cuisine. Also following the traditional policy of our Society, this volume has been edited to include as many papers as possible, without any selection. New ideas and data may sometimes be controversial and still immature, but we accepted all and put them together in this volume. We hope that from these fascinating papers, further new principles of basal ganglia action might emerge in the future.

This book provides professionals with the latest and most reliable information on these disabilities. It utilizes a developmental perspective and reviews the various types of intellectual disabilities, discusses approaches to classification, diagnosis, and appropriate interventions, and provides information on resources that may offer additional help. Case examples are included in each section to highlight specific diagnostic and treatment issues. The emphasis in this book is on the development of the person, the provision of interventions for behavioral and emotional problems associated with intellectual disability, and the positive support necessary for self-determination. It discusses the facilitation of transitions throughout the lifespan from infancy to maturity and old age. Additionally, the book reviews evaluations for behavioral and emotional problems, genetic factors, appropriate psychosocial, medical, and pharmacological interventions, and family and community support.

Lisa Tabor Connor, Loraine K. Obler
R4,353 Discovery Miles 43 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume has been composed as an appreciation of Martin L. Albert in the year of his 60th birthday. At least one contributor to each paper in this volume has been touched by Marty in some way; lie has mentored some, been a fellow student with some, and been a colleague to most. These contributors, as well as many others, view Marty as a gifted scientist and a wonderful human being. The breadth of his interests and intellectual pursuits is truly impressive; this breadth is reflected, only in part. by the diversity of the papers in this volume. His interests have ranged from psychopharmacology to cross-cultural understanding of dementia, through the aphasias, to the history of the fields that touch on behavioral neurology, especially neurology per se, cognitive psychology, speech-language pathology, and linguistics. Throughout his scholarly work, Martha Taylor Sarno notes, Marty never loses the human perspective, e. g. , the "powerfully disabling effect on the individual person" with aphasia or other neurological disorder. For those readers who only how a portion of his work, we thought that we should describe him here. Many of the people whom Marty has influenced have been able to contribute to this volume. We have invited some others who were unable to contribute to express their appreciation for him, as well.
