Reimagining Public Sector Management - A New Age of Renewal and Renaissance? (Hardcover): John Diamond, Joyce Liddle Reimagining Public Sector Management - A New Age of Renewal and Renaissance? (Hardcover)
John Diamond, Joyce Liddle
R2,797 Discovery Miles 27 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this latest volume of the Critical Perspectives on International Public Sector Management series, Professors John Diamond and Joyce Liddle have gathered leading scholars and new research to help discern some immediate areas of public policy making that have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. With this new profoundly different context, “business as normal” is seen as no longer viable. Reimagining Public Sector Management delves into the crisis and emergency management of the pandemic, exploring the ways in which different agencies responded to the pandemic and the lessons learnt in terms of disaster planning and co-ordination. Chapters analyse the ways in which health services and the associated work linked to vaccine development provided significant lessons for those involved in public policy making and analysis before highlighting the emergence of a new consensus on the role of public agencies and institutions could play in the post pandemic environment as captured in the slogan “Build Back Better”.

Corruption and Norms - Why Informal Rules Matter (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Ina Kubbe, Annika Engelbert Corruption and Norms - Why Informal Rules Matter (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Ina Kubbe, Annika Engelbert
R4,722 Discovery Miles 47 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book focuses on the role of norms in the description, explanation, prediction and combat of corruption. The chapters concentrate on the relationship between corruption and social as well as legal norms, providing comparative perspectives from different academic disciplines, theoretical and methodological backgrounds, and various country-studies. Due to the nature of social norms that are embedded in personal, local, and organizational contexts, the contributions in the volume focus in particular on the individual and institutional level of analysis (micro and meso-mechanisms). The book will be of interest to students and scholars across the fields of political science, public administration, socio-legal studies and psychology.

The Craft of Governing - The contribution of Patrick Weller to Australian political science (Paperback): R.A.W. Rhodes The Craft of Governing - The contribution of Patrick Weller to Australian political science (Paperback)
R.A.W. Rhodes
R1,228 Discovery Miles 12 280 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

'Bargaining and puzzling; power and thought; dealing and agonising; compromise and commitment. These are two sides of political practitioners whether politician, public servant or campaigner. Understand the interplay and we can, just sometimes, make sense of the real world we seek to interpret.'Patrick Weller's observation comes from half a century of contemplating politics in action. The question of how government works lies at the heart of political science, and it has also been the career focus of this pioneer in the field. The Craft of Governing offers a tribute to the contribution of Patrick Weller to Australian political science, with chapters from leading political commentators including Michelle Grattan, Peter Shergold, Bob Jackson and James Walter. Contributors consider the role of the prime minister, approaches to studying executive government, the continuing significance of senior public servants and the nature of leadership in public bureaucracies. They also reflect on how insights from the study of domestic public policy can be applied to international organisations, challenges faced by Westminster democracies and approaches to political biography. The Craft of Governing is an invaluable resource for readers interested in approaches to studying politics and the development of political science as a discipline.

What Water Is Worth: Overlooked Non-Economic Value in Water Resources (Hardcover, New): K. Russo, Z. Smith What Water Is Worth: Overlooked Non-Economic Value in Water Resources (Hardcover, New)
K. Russo, Z. Smith
R2,625 Discovery Miles 26 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Water managers tend to have narrow views on what they consider to be the value of water. However, not all water use is market driven; therefore, a comprehensive understanding of local community values associated with water can inform decision making by water managers. We use the term 'water manager' to encompass not only the singular person assigned this community duty but also the many councils and institutions who make decisions regarding local water resources. Regarding conventional values of water, an abundance of research exists; yet, for intangible aspects such as conservation for its own sake and spiritual connections, research involving value is limited. There are volumes of works that estimate the monetary values of water; however, intangible values are often overlooked. In general, few studies endeavor to estimate worth for water that encompasses more than a monetary value. We argue that it is the inclusion of both monetary and non-monetary values that justifies trust in the position of water manager.

Achieving Regulatory Excellence (Paperback): Cary Coglianese Achieving Regulatory Excellence (Paperback)
Cary Coglianese
R987 Discovery Miles 9 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Whether striving to protect citizens from financial risks, climate change, inadequate health care, or the uncertainties of the emerging "sharing" economy, regulators must routinely make difficult judgment calls in an effort to meet the conflicting demands that society places on them. Operating within a political climate of competing demands, regulators need a lodestar to help them define and evaluate success. Achieving Regulatory Excellence provides that direction by offering new insights from law, public administration, political science, sociology, and policy sciences on what regulators need to do to improve their performance. Achieving Regulatory Excellence offers guidance from leading international experts about how regulators can set appropriate priorities and make sound, evidence-based decisions through processes that are transparent and participatory. With increasing demands for smarter but leaner government, the need for sound regulatory capacity--for regulatory excellence--has never been stronger. In addition to chapters by editor Cary Coglianese, and a foreword by Jim Ellis, president and chief executive officer of the Alberta Energy Regulator, contributors include Robert Baldwin (London School of Economics and Political Science), John Braithwaite (Australian National University), Angus Corbett (University of Pennsylvania), Daniel Esty (Yale University), Adam Finkel (University of Pennsylvania and University of Michigan), Ted Gayer (Brookings Institution), John Graham (Indiana University), Neil Gunningham (Australian National University), Kathryn Harrison (University of British Columbia), Bridget Hutter (London School of Economics and Political Science), Howard Kunreuther (Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania), David Levi-Faur (Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Shelley H. Metzenbaum (Volcker Alliance), Donald P. Moynihan (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Paul R. Noe (American Forest and Paper Association), Gaurav Vasisht (Volcker Alliance), David Vogel (University of California-Berkeley), and Wendy Wagner (University of Texas School of Law). "

Decentralization and Governance Capacity - The Case of Turkey (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Evrim Tan Decentralization and Governance Capacity - The Case of Turkey (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Evrim Tan
R2,096 Discovery Miles 20 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It is widely assumed that the relationship between governance capacity and decentralization determines the success in governance, but how does this relationship function is largely contested. Does decentralization lead to an improvement in governance capacities, or are certain capacities preconditioned in order for decentralization to lead better governance? Relying on an empirical study of Turkish provincial municipalities, the book argues success in decentralization is strongly influenced by the socioeconomic conditions in the province and to a lesser extent by the local government's capacity. The book provides a novel approach to capacity building practices and decentralization reforms by suggesting that the relationship between decentralization and governance capacity should be addressed not only on the organizational but also on the developmental level. In this way, the book proposes asymmetrical decentralization according to socio-economic development at subnational level for better governance outcomes.

R1,578 Discovery Miles 15 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Reimagining Public Managers - Delivering Public Value (Paperback): Usman W Chohan Reimagining Public Managers - Delivering Public Value (Paperback)
Usman W Chohan
R1,368 Discovery Miles 13 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Public value theory speaks to the co-creation of value between politicians, citizens, and public managers, with a focus on the public manager in terms of her contributions, initiatives, and limitations in value creation. But just who are public managers? Public value regularly treats the "public manager" as synonymous with bureaucrat, government official, civil servant, or public administrator. However, the categories of public managers represent a more versatile and expansive set of agents in society than they are given credit for, and the discourse of public value has typically not delved sufficiently into the variety of possible cadres that might comprise the "public manager." This book seeks to go beyond the assumed understandings of who the public manager is and what she does. It does so by examining the processes of value creation that are driven by non-traditional sets of public managers, which include the judiciary, the armed forces, multilateral institutions, and central banks. It applies public value tools to understand their value creation and uses their unique attributes to inform our understanding of public value theory. Tailored to an audience comprising public administration scholars, students of government, public officials, practitioners, and social scientists interested in contemporary problems of values in society, this book helps to advance public administration thought by re-examining the theory's ultimate protagonist: the public manager. It therefore constitutes an important effort to take public value theory forward by going "beyond" conceptions of the public manager as she has thus far been understood.

Developing Digital Governance - South Korea as a Global Digital Government Leader (Paperback): Choong-Sik Chung Developing Digital Governance - South Korea as a Global Digital Government Leader (Paperback)
Choong-Sik Chung
R1,392 Discovery Miles 13 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why and how did South Korea become the world's top digital government leader? This book examines the Korean model and how it is different from the digital government models of the West, specifically of the United States and the UK. The book also looks at the successes and failures that South Korea has encountered during the process of helping developing nations set up digital governments. The book begins with the origins and historical development of digital governance. It examines digital government strategies and informatization policies in Korea's nation development and its promotion of the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. The book explains that one of the key successes was the result of leadership and a strong pan-governmental propulsion system, namely ICT governance. The book also suggests a new digital government development model in response to rapid changes in the ICT environment, specifically in view of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is a useful reference for developing countries that are looking at developing their own national information master plan, including digital government.

Nation-branding in Practice - The Politics of Promoting Sports, Cities and Universities in Kazakhstan and Qatar (Paperback):... Nation-branding in Practice - The Politics of Promoting Sports, Cities and Universities in Kazakhstan and Qatar (Paperback)
Kristin Anabel Eggeling
R1,387 Discovery Miles 13 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the political implications of country promotion through practices of 'nation-branding' by drawing on contemporary examples from the sports, urban development and higher education sector in Kazakhstan and Qatar. Nation-branding has emerged as a central practice of international politics, where it is commonly understood as a vain, superficial selling technique with little political salience. Drawing on shared insights from practice theory and constructivist notions of nationalism, identity and power, this book challenges this reading and instead argues that nation-branding is neither neutral nor primarily economically motivated, but inherently politicised and tied to the legitimation of current political regimes. The starting point for the analysis is a range of everyday practices and sites long ignored by international relations scholars. In particular, the book traces how the political leadership in Kazakhstan and Qatar have used participation in the international sports circuit, spectacular urban development, and the construction of 'world-class' universities to first produce and then stabilize new ideas about their state. Providing a new analytical perspective on nation-branding, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Middle Eastern and Central Asian studies, International Relations, and Cultural and Political Geography.

Collaborative Governance of Local Governments in China (Paperback): Jing Cui Collaborative Governance of Local Governments in China (Paperback)
Jing Cui
R779 Discovery Miles 7 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

China faces the problem of collaboration deficiency in local governance of metropolitan areas. With the evolution of regional spatial structure in China, this book is timely with its analysis on how China can approach current problems in China's regional governance through a holistic collaborative governance mechanism. The book applies the governance theory to the local government in metropolitan areas and explains how this approach may help to equalize regional public resources allocation. The author puts forth a convincing case for the use of holistic collaborative governance to better understand the problems of China's local government in metropolitan areas and to promote regional government collaboration. The book also looks at cross-jurisdiction collaboration organization, collaborative mechanism of local government, private sector and non-governmental organizations in public affairs (environmental protection, transportation, public health, water resources).

Australia's Engagement with Economic and Social Rights - A Case of Institutional Avoidance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021):... Australia's Engagement with Economic and Social Rights - A Case of Institutional Avoidance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Russell Solomon
R3,666 Discovery Miles 36 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a contemporary socio-legal study of Australia's protection of economic and social rights. Despite Australia's hortatory language of compliance with international rights standards, its translation of these standards into domestic law and policy has been found wanting. In considering Australia's compliance across the policy areas of health, housing, labour and social security, it is argued that Australia's failings can be understood in terms of its institutional framework. This framework provides incomplete legal protection for rights and leaves that protection almost exclusively in the realm of politics and policymaking, an arena still dominated by neoliberalism and a political culture averse to the protection and promotion of economic and social rights.

Rethinking Fisheries Governance - The Role of States and Meta-Governance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Hoang Viet Thang Rethinking Fisheries Governance - The Role of States and Meta-Governance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Hoang Viet Thang
R3,278 Discovery Miles 32 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how the state can foster collective action by fisher's communities in fisheries management. It presents a different perspective from Elinor Ostrom's classic work on the eight institutional conditions that foster collective action in natural resource management and instead emphasizes the role of the state in fisheries co-management, engaging a state-centric notion of 'meta-governance'. It argues that first, the state is required to foster collective action by fishers; and secondly, that the current fisheries co-management arrangements are state-centric. The study develops these arguments through the analysis of three case studies in Japan, Vietnam and Norway. The author also makes a theoretical contribution to governance literature by developing Ostrom's 'society-centric' framework in a way which makes it more amenable to the analysis of state capacity and government intervention in a comparative context. This book will appeal to students and scholars of global governance, fisheries management, co-management, and crisis management, as well as practitioners of fisheries management.

Issues In Public Policy And Administration In Malaysia: An Institutional Analysis (Hardcover): Abdillah Noh, Nadia H Yashaiya Issues In Public Policy And Administration In Malaysia: An Institutional Analysis (Hardcover)
Abdillah Noh, Nadia H Yashaiya
R1,903 Discovery Miles 19 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book argues that there is nothing inherently stable, persistent or enduring about institutions. By examining the various issues facing the Malaysian bureaucracy and adopting an institutional analysis, this book brings the point that institutions are disposed to change because they are fraught with tension due to the quality of institutions. Using various examples, it explains that such tension and change dynamics can come from institutional resources, the manner in which resources are distributed to different actors, the varying power configurations among institutional actors and the larger political, economic and social environment that institutions operate in.Accordingly, in examining the various concerns of the Malaysian bureaucracy, this book highlights the typologies of institutional change and the inherent tension over resources that exist among actors that makes reform attempts, at times, potentially problematic but not impossible. New concerns in public policy and governance that are yet to be discussed widely in the Malaysian public administration literature are raised, including issues on collaborative governance, public service motivation and representative bureaucracy.

British Capitalism After the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Scott Lavery British Capitalism After the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Scott Lavery
R1,991 Discovery Miles 19 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The 2008 financial crisis rocked British capitalism to its foundations. More than a decade after the crash, the country is still dealing with its consequences. This book explores the extent to which British capitalism has been reconfigured in this tumultuous period. Advancing an in-depth analysis of the political economy of New Labour, the Coalition and the period after Brexit, the book argues that deep structural weaknesses have been re-embedded within British capitalism. The Coalition promised to eliminate the deficit in one parliament and to 'rebalance' the British economy. It did neither. Instead, real wages slumped, uneven development intensified and productivity stagnated. An era of volatile post-crisis politics - exemplified by Brexit, the May government and the rise of Corbyn - emerged in this context, threatening the foundations of the old order. This book is required reading for students and scholars interested in the fractious political economy of British capitalism after the crisis. "Lavery's book on the flawed political economy of Britain's hybrid variant of capitalism after the 2008 financial crisis is a tour de force. It is theoretically sophisticated, historically informed, conjuncturally nuanced, empirically robust and provides a solid basis for analysing developments following the Brexit debacle, whatever these might be."-Bob Jessop, Lancaster University, UK "If you are not yet familiar with Scott Lavery's work, you very soon will be, as it is becoming increasingly difficult to overlook. With a clear mastery of both the politics and the economics of Coalition attempts to reduce the size of the state, Lavery shows with compelling precision how far and how quickly post-crisis Britain travelled from New Labour's previous 'one nation' approach to macroeconomic governance."-Professor Matthew Watson, University of Warwick, UK "British capitalism was changed but not reformed after the financial crisis, and its deep pathologies now find expression in political volatility and ideological polarisation. In a persuasive and rich analysis Scott Lavery shows how we got to this point and what the future might hold."-Andrew Gamble, University of Sheffield, UK

Social Policies and Emotions - A Look from the Global South (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Angelica De Sena, Adrian Scribano Social Policies and Emotions - A Look from the Global South (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Angelica De Sena, Adrian Scribano
R2,209 Discovery Miles 22 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book analyzes the connections between social policies and politics of sensibilities. The authors show how social policies build sociabilities, experiences and sensibilities, producing processes of conflict avoidance and consecration of the given. After discussing violence against women as a case study in order to understand the current state of social policies, the authors then describe how the "place" and "value" of education have become central features to social policies in order to disband conflict. Finally, they explain the emergence of a social phenomenon in the last sixteen years in Latin America and particularly Argentina: the compensatory consumption system and the resulting emergence of the "assisted citizen."

Cultural Diplomacy in Europe - Between the Domestic and the International (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Caterina Carta, Richard... Cultural Diplomacy in Europe - Between the Domestic and the International (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Caterina Carta, Richard Higgott
R3,674 Discovery Miles 36 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited volume explores European cultural diplomacy, a topic of growing interest across the scholarly and applied public policy communities in recent years. The contributions focus on Europe, culture and diplomacy and the way they are interlinked in the contemporary international context. The European Union increasingly resorts to cultural assets and activity for both internal and external purposes, to foster European cohesion and advancing integration, and to mitigate the demise of other foreign policy components, respectively. This calls for an analysis of the strategic role of culture, especially as it relates to the realm of EU external action. The chapters provide a conceptual discussion of culture in international relations and examine how this concept relates to cultural diplomacy and cultural strategy. The authors discuss roles and relationships with the EU's 2016 Global Strategy and current EU attempts to foster the EU's political and societal resilience.

Disrupted Governance - Towards a New Policy Science (Paperback, New Ed): Kris Hartley, Glen David Kuecker Disrupted Governance - Towards a New Policy Science (Paperback, New Ed)
Kris Hartley, Glen David Kuecker
R586 Discovery Miles 5 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Element explores the uncertain future of public policy practice and scholarship in an age of radical disruption. Building on foundational ideas in policy sciences, we argue that an anachronistic instrumental rationalism underlies contemporary policy logic and limits efforts to understand new policy challenges. We consider whether the policy sciences framework can be reframed to facilitate deeper understandings of this anachronistic epistemic, in anticipation of a research agenda about epistemic destabilization and contestation. The Element applies this theoretical provocation to environmental policy and sustainability, issues about which policymaking proceeds amid unpredictable contexts and rising sociopolitical turbulence that portend a liminal state in the transition from one way of thinking to another. The Element concludes by contemplating the fate of policy's epistemic instability, anticipating what policy understandings will emerge in a new system, and questioning the degree to which either presages a seismic shift in the relationship between policy and society.

Anthropology and Public Service - The UK Experience (Paperback): Jeremy MacClancy Anthropology and Public Service - The UK Experience (Paperback)
Jeremy MacClancy
R835 Discovery Miles 8 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These days an increasing number of social anthropologists do not find employment within academia. Rather, many find jobs with commercial organizations or in government, where they run research teams and create policy. These scholars provide a much-needed social dimension to government thinking and practice. Anthropology and Public Service shows how anthropologists can set new agendas, and revise old ones in the public sector. Written for scholars and students of various social sciences, these chapters include discussions of anthropologists' work with the Department for International Development, the Ministry of Defence, the UK Border Agency, and the Cabinet Office, and their contributions to prison governance.

The Logic of Charity - Great Expectations in Hard Times (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Beth Breeze, J. Mohan The Logic of Charity - Great Expectations in Hard Times (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Beth Breeze, J. Mohan
R1,728 Discovery Miles 17 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What is charity? How does it operate, who does it benefit and what should we expect it to do? This important book helps to tackle the most common misunderstandings and misconceptions of charitable activity in contemporary British society, especially insofar as these affect the thinking of politicians and policymakers. The authors present and discuss over a dozen studies, including public attitudes to giving, large datasets on the geography and funding patterns of third sector organisations, and interviews with a wide range of donors, charity leaders, fundraisers and philanthropy advisers. This data enables them to explore the logic of charity in terms of the distribution of resources across causes and communities in the UK, and the processes behind philanthropic decision-making, to reveal a picture of charitable activity at odds with widespread assumptions.

From Policy to Administration - Essays in Honour of William A. Robson (Hardcover): J.A.G. Griffith From Policy to Administration - Essays in Honour of William A. Robson (Hardcover)
J.A.G. Griffith
R3,508 Discovery Miles 35 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1976, From Policy to Administration is not the conventional Festschrift written by many hands on many unrelated subjects- rather it is a tight collection of essays conceived and written around a unified theme. From one point of view, policy and administration are at two opposite ends of the governmental spectrum; but at the same time both are aspects of almost every single government activity and the essays in this book set out to reflect this apparent paradox. Dr Jones finds symptoms of it at the administrative heart of the policy making machine while Professor Friedrich looks at the nature of that machine and its relation to democratic forms. Four central essays by Professors Bernard Crick, Peter Self, John Mackintosh and Mr Sharpe, link policy making and administration to the controversies about participation, decentralisation, and devolution. Mr Foster considers the public corporation as a dynamic instrument concerned with the problem of efficiency. The book concludes with essays by Professors Mitchell and Griffith on the involvement of legal processes in the structure and functioning of policy and administration. The book does not attempt to cover all of William Robson's interests. It is a mark of the versatility of his genius that no book could do that and remain unified. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of public administration and political studies.
