Theatre in Passing - A Moscow Photo-Diary (Paperback, New): Elena Siemens Theatre in Passing - A Moscow Photo-Diary (Paperback, New)
Elena Siemens
R867 Discovery Miles 8 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Theatre in Passing" explores spaces of performance in contemporary Moscow. Inspired by French philosopher Michel de Certeau's model of a "second, poetic geography" in which the walker--the everyday practitioner--invents the space observed by the voyeur, this book takes the reader on a tour of spaces of performance in contemporary Moscow. Through text and photography, the city's "theatrical geography" is uncovered, from the Bolshoi Theater in Theater Square to hidden gems like the recently restored Kuskovo estate. With additional sections on street theater and other public gatherings, "Theatre in Passing" is a must-read book for anyone curious about the theatrical architecture and geography of Russia's capital.

Terrorism in American Memory - Memorials, Museums, and Architecture in the Post-9/11 Era (Paperback): Marita Sturken Terrorism in American Memory - Memorials, Museums, and Architecture in the Post-9/11 Era (Paperback)
Marita Sturken
R711 Discovery Miles 7 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The role of cultural memory in American identity Terrorism in American Memory argues that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and all that followed in its wake were the primary force shaping United States politics and culture in the post-9/11 era. Marita Sturken maintains that during the past two decades, when the country was subjected to terrorist attacks and promulgated ongoing wars of aggression, we have veered into increasingly polarized factions and been extraordinarily preoccupied with memorialization and the politics of memory. The post-9/11 era began with a hunger for memorialization and it ended with massive protests over police brutality that demanded the destruction of historical monuments honoring racist historical figures. Sturken argues that memory is both the battleground and the site for negotiations of national identity because it is a field through which the past is experienced in the present. The paradox of these last two decades is that it gave rise to an era of intensely nationalistic politics in response to global terrorism at the same time that it released the containment of the ghosts of terrorism embedded within US history. And within that disruption, new stories emerged, new memories were unearthed, and the story of the nation is being rewritten. For these reasons, this book argues that the post-9/11 era has come to an end, and we are now in a new still undefined era with new priorities and national demands. An era preoccupied with memory thus begins with the memorial projects of 9/11 and ends with the radical intervention of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, informally known as the Lynching Memorial, in Montgomery, Alabama, a project that, unlike the nationalistic 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York, dramatically rewrites the national script of American history. Woven within analyses of memorialization, memorials, memory museums, art projects on memory, and architectural projects is a discussion about design and architecture, the increased creation of memorials as experiences, and the role of architecture as national symbolism and renewal. Terrorism in American Memory sheds light on the struggles over who is memorialized, who is forgotten, and what that politics of memory reveals about the United States as an imaginary and a nation.

Designing UNESCO - Art, Architecture and International Politics at Mid-Century (Hardcover, New Ed): Christopher E.M. Pearson Designing UNESCO - Art, Architecture and International Politics at Mid-Century (Hardcover, New Ed)
Christopher E.M. Pearson
R4,522 Discovery Miles 45 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Designing UNESCO: Art, Architecture and International Politics at Mid-Century represents the first full-length monograph on the genesis, construction and reception of the Paris headquarters of the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The book traces the long and complex birth of UNESCO's permanent seat from its conception in 1950 to its inauguration in 1958, showing how its history constitutes a unique nexus of modernist practices in twentieth-century international politics, art, architecture and criticism. Drawing on a wide range of unpublished archival material and examining critical reception of the building in the local and international press, Christopher Pearson's analysis operates on formal, structural and theoretical levels, revealing many of the largely unspoken assumptions of modern architecture at mid-century and elucidating the conflicted relation between art and science in the post-war period. The volume also throws new light on many of the major architects and artists of the period, among them Breuer, Gropius, Le Corbusier and Eero Saarinen, as well as Picasso, Moore, MirA(3), Arp, Calder and Noguchi. Designing UNESCO is a compelling and original account of one of the most important, yet under-appreciated, buildings of twentieth-century modernism.

Boutiques and Other Retail Spaces - The Architecture of Seduction (Hardcover, New): David Vernet, Leontine de Wit Boutiques and Other Retail Spaces - The Architecture of Seduction (Hardcover, New)
David Vernet, Leontine de Wit
R5,641 Discovery Miles 56 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Presenting a critical and theoretical dimension to retail design, Boutiques and Other Retail Spaces links the ideas behind it to real practice in this innovative and important contribution to architectural/interior theory literature.

Retail structure has been subject to a dramatic and ongoing transformation over the past thirty years, materializing in the emergence of large-scale out-of-town shopping centres and new specialized shops in city centres. These specialized boutiques are highly designed, involving well-known architectural firms such as OMA/Rem Koolhaas, David Chipperfield, Herzog + de Meuron amongst others.

With case studies and over 100 black and white images, Vernet and de Wit set forth original and well-grounded theory to accompany this popular and lucrative area of work.

Frank Furness - Architecture in the Age of the Great Machines (Paperback): George E. Thomas Frank Furness - Architecture in the Age of the Great Machines (Paperback)
George E. Thomas; Contributions by Alan Hess
R815 Discovery Miles 8 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Frank Furness (1839-1912) has remained a curiosity to architectural historians and critics, somewhere between an icon and an enigma, whose importance and impact have yet to be properly evaluated or appreciated. To some, his work pushed pattern and proportion to extremes, undermining or forcing together the historic styles he referenced in such eclectic buildings as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania Library. To others, he was merely a regional mannerist creating an eccentric personal style that had little resonance and modest influence on the future of architecture. By placing Furness in the industrial culture that supported his work, George Thomas finds a cutting-edge revolutionary who launched the beginnings of modern design, played a key part in its evolution, and whose strategies continue to affect the built world. In his sweeping reassessment of Furness as an architect of the machine age, Thomas grounds him in Philadelphia, a city led by engineers, industrialists, and businessmen who commissioned the buildings that extended modern design to Chicago, Glasgow, and Berlin. Thomas examines the multiple facets of Victorian Philadelphia's modernity, looking to its eager embrace of innovations in engineering, transportation, technology, and building, and argues that Furness, working for a particular cohort of clients, played a central role in shaping this context. His analyses of the innovative planning, formal, and structural qualities of Furness's major buildings identifies their designs as initiators of a narrative that leads to such more obviously modern figures as Louis Sullivan, William Price, Frank Lloyd Wright and eventually, the architects of the Bauhaus. Misunderstood and reviled in the traditional architectural centers of New York and Boston, Furness's projects, commissioned by the progressive industrialists of the new machine age, intentionally broke with the historical styles of the past to work in a modern way-from utilizing principles based on logistical planning to incorporating the new materials of the industrial age. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes more than eighty black-and-white and thirty color photographs that highlight the richness of his work and the originality of his design spanning more than forty years.

Renewal Architects - The Transformation of Farsons Brewery Malta (Hardcover): Ian Ritchie Renewal Architects - The Transformation of Farsons Brewery Malta (Hardcover)
Ian Ritchie
R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The name Farsons is as synonymous with Malta as Guinness is with Ireland. Louis Farrugia's visionary decision to conduct a European architectural competition has resulted in a stunningly beautiful and brilliant transformation of the 1951 Art Deco Farsons Old Brewhouse buildings. The gardens-courtyards-campus masterplan and architecture has been designed by the internationally renowned architects - ritchie*studio - led by Ian Ritchie, and realised in collaboration with Alex Torpiano's engineering-focused Maltese practice TBA Periti, and environmental physicist Doug King. Inspired by Maltese palace gardens and the coloured architectural elements of the island's vernacular buildings, and designed with respect for the force of the Mediterranean sun, this utterly contemporary mixed-use commercial architecture is a masterpiece of form, light and shade, sustainability and environmental engineering. Richard England, the celebrated Maltese architect wrote: "It is perhaps the finest building our island has seen over many a decade. It proves that real estate development can be produced enriched with what Vitruvius termed 'Venustas'. Rarely has Malta seen architecture of this excellence."

British Piers and Pier Railways (Paperback): Anthony Poulton-Smith British Piers and Pier Railways (Paperback)
Anthony Poulton-Smith
R562 Discovery Miles 5 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The British have always had a special affinity for their coastal resorts and piers are the epitome of the British seaside. This book takes the reader on a clockwise tour of our islands, stopping at every pier and walking through their histories. Yet this is not just a tour of the pier, for it is not the pier that makes the history, but the people who work and walk along it. Within these pages the reader will meet a prizefighter who achieved fame in a very different sport; learn of several 'professors' whose talents were solely being able to leap from the pier; discover why man would ever want to fly from a pier; meet the former Beatle who worked for a pier company; read about the ferries and steamers that carried visitors; the fires which are an ever-present danger; the men who designed and built the piers along with the entertainers, characters, enthusiasts and entrepreneurs who made the piers. Fascinating information is included on how piers became longer or shorter, which piers served as part of the Royal Navy during two World Wars, and the tremendous amount of work and effort it takes to keep the piers open to the public today. Several piers have embedded rails, with some still being used by trains or trams. These pier railways are described in detail: the engineering, the designs and the changes over the years. While electricity is the sole motive power today, these had once been either steam-driven, pulled by horses, moved by hand or even, in one example, wind-powered by a sail! With over one hundred photographs, both old and new, this is a tour of the coast of the mainland and two islands. Piers which sadly have not survived are included as well as those which never got off the ground (or the shoreline). It reveals why they were built, how they were repurposed over the years, and their role in the future. Join the tour and recall the sea air, candy floss, the music, the sounds of a holiday, that day trip, an encounter, a rendezvous or special memory

Building Community in Buildings - The Design and Culture of Dynamic Workplaces (Hardcover): Ken Baker, Jana M. Kemp Building Community in Buildings - The Design and Culture of Dynamic Workplaces (Hardcover)

Building Community in Buildings takes us on a fascinating journey through workplaces large and small, old and new, traditional and contemporary, to explore the dynamic relationships between people and the structures in which they work. Consider that in the 1950s, average North Americans spent approximately 50 percent of their time in buildings, compared to a child born today, who will spend 90 percent of his or her life inside. Clearly and increasingly, our social and cultural relationships are deeply influenced by the physical spaces in which they are created. Jana Kemp and Ken Baker integrate insights from management and building design to reveal new understandings about workplace productivity and performance. Showcasing dozens of examples-from the redesign of the Hood River Library in Oregon (with input from front-line employees) to the creation of open, naturally-lit spaces in Lockheed Building 157 (increasing employee productivity by 15%), the authors highlight innovative practices that utilize space to promote creativity and collaboration, improve morale and motivation, and ensure employee health and safety. They also explore the pros and cons of virtual workplaces, in which people are connected electronically but not physically, and trace the impact and influences of such trends as the green building movement. Featuring over a dozen photographs, practical recommendations, and the tools to conduct a workplace design survey in your own organization, Building Community in Buildings ultimately demonstrates that by investing in spaces that support people needs, companies will strengthen bottom-line results.

Architecture of Sovereignty - Stone Bodies, Colonial Gazes, and Living Gods in South India (Hardcover): Gita V. Pai Architecture of Sovereignty - Stone Bodies, Colonial Gazes, and Living Gods in South India (Hardcover)
Gita V. Pai
R2,547 Discovery Miles 25 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this innovative study, Gita V. Pai traces the history of the Pudu Mandapam (Tamil, 'new hall') – a Hindu temple structure in Madurai – through the rise and fall of empires in south India from the seventeenth century to the present. This wide-ranging work illustrates how south Indian temples became entangled in broader conflicts over sovereignty, from early modern Nayaka kings, to British colonial rule, to the post-independence government today. Drawing from methodologies in anthropology, religious studies, and art and architectural history, the author argues that the small temple site provides profound insight into the relationship between aesthetics, sovereignty, and religion in modern South Asia.

The Politics of the Piazza - The History and Meaning of the Italian Square (Hardcover, New Ed): Eamonn Canniffe The Politics of the Piazza - The History and Meaning of the Italian Square (Hardcover, New Ed)
Eamonn Canniffe
R4,366 Discovery Miles 43 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Through a detailed study of the principal spaces of Italian cities, this book explores the relationship between political systems and their methods of representation in architecture. Illustrated by contemporary photographs and analytical drawings, it examines significant piazzas and situates these examples in their social and political contexts, highlighting the urban evidence of shifts between autocratic and democratic forms of government through history. The ideological role of political architecture is analyzed through the work of various theorists including ancient sources, Renaissance thinkers and modern critics. The complex evolution of individual spaces over time is represented by their physical layering from ancient times to the present day. Other examples connect the development of different characteristic types of Italian urban form in chronological sequence, categorized by art historical and political periods.

Guide to the Nubian Monuments on Lake Nasser (Paperback, Illustrated Ed): Jocelyn Gohary Guide to the Nubian Monuments on Lake Nasser (Paperback, Illustrated Ed)
Jocelyn Gohary
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

During the building of the Aswan High Dam between 1960 and 1970, the Nubian Rescue Campaign, operating under the auspices of UNESCO, was an international effort to rescue those of the Nubian monuments which would be submerged once the dam was completed. The most famous monument to be thus rescued and reconstructed is the Great Temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel, but altogther four areas in Nubia around Lake Nasser now contain ancient monuments that were reconstructed and moved from their original positions: Abu Simbel, New Amada, New Wadi al-Sebua, and New Kalabsha. These impressive sites are becoming increasingly popular with international visitors. Dr. Jocelyn Gohary opens this compact and attractive guide, the first of its kind, with an introduction to the history and culture of Nubia during the pharaonic period. She then describes each monument in detail, providing a simple plan for each and highlighting its history, religion, and art. Also included are brief descriptions of the four temples that were transported and re-erected abroad -- the most notable being the Temple of Dendur in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Masao Furuyama; Edited by Peter Goessel; Artworks by Tadao Ando
R481 Discovery Miles 4 810 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this essential TASCHEN introduction to Tadao Ando we explore the hybrid of tradition, modernism, and function that allows his buildings to enchant architects, designers, fashion designers, and beyond. Through key projects including private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces, we explore a uniquely monumental yet comforting aesthetic that draws as much on the calm restraint of Japanese tradition as the compelling modernist vocabularies of Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. With featured projects in Japan, France, Italy, Spain, and the United States, we see not only Ando's global reach but also his refined sensitivity for the environs: the play of light through windows, and, in particular, the interaction of buildings with water. From the mesmerizing Church of the Light in Osaka to the luminous Punta della Dogana Contemporary Art Center in Venice, this is a radiant tour through a distinctly contemporary form as much as a timeless appeal of light, elements, and equilibrium. Rouge Lointain - Andre Soupart (English, French, Hardcover): Xavier Canonne, Pierre Loze Rouge Lointain - Andre Soupart (English, French, Hardcover)
Xavier Canonne, Pierre Loze
R995 Discovery Miles 9 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Rouge Lointain is first and foremost a book of photographs that is in line with the resolutely contemporary trend of preserving traces of places and activities that are in danger of disappearing. Through the images of its superb machinery that has now disappeared and its deserted architecture, it is the memory of an Italian-style theatre that lives on today. Through them it is also the work of those who worked there in the shadows and without whom the show could not have existed as we imagine. Fascinated by the beauty of its frames, the dilapidated materials, the magic of these mechanisms made of ropes, pulleys, capstans and narrow footbridges on three antique masts, Andre Soupart invites us to wander on the grill, under the stage and backstage and to discover a universe unknown to the spectators. Text in English and French.

Eric Hoeweler, J Meejin Yoon
R1,234 R1,016 Discovery Miles 10 160 Save R218 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hoeweler + Yoon Architecture, founded in 2001 and based in Boston, gained early praise for ephemeral and interactive public projects and is recognised today for striking works that combine conceptual speculation and technological sophistication. The firm's impressive body of work has expanded the scope of design beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries and has won them numerous national and international awards. Verify in Field is Hoeweler + Yoon Architecture's second book. Its title derives from a notational convention on architectural drawings to indicate that the information is subject to unknown conditions in the field. The book highlights verification as an intergral part of the design process and demonstrates it as a productive tool to test ideas and act on the world. For both disciplinary and contractual reasons, the instruments of design - drawings, models, and prototypes - operate on the world at a distance. Techniques of prototyping, measurement, feedback, negotiation, and intervention inform the diverse output of the studio. Verify in Field features recent designs by Hoeweler + Yoon architecture, including such projects as the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia; a floating outdoor classroom in Philadelphia; the MIT Museum; and a pedestrian bridge in Shanghai's Expo Park. The book also examines the discipline's pressing questions, as they relate to verification, uncertainty, and design agency, in a series of essays by Eric Hoeweler and J. Meejin Yoon on topics that include means and methods, the public realm, energy and environments, the construction detail, and social media. These themes are echoed in conversations with collaborators, historians, and theorists: Adam Greenfield, Nader Tehrani, Kate Orff, Daniel Barber, and Ana Miljacki.
