Flexibility, safety and accessibility: in addition to the current technical, energy and environmental standards, school buildings require innovative structural solutions which extend far beyond the building design. The authors guide the reader through the cultural development of school buildings, presenting stakeholders as well as historical and contemporary learning concepts, defining organizational tasks, formulating quality standards of contemporary learning and working as well as presenting typologies and spatial organizational models, which were created in cooperation with the foundation, the Montag Stiftung, as part of the project Guidelines for Productive School Buildings. 32 international school buildings are presented through detailed drawings and photographs, arranged according to their levels of education. Ten design parameters for school construction round off this practical design manual. With contributions by Natascha Meuser,Hans Wolfgang Hoffmann,Thomas Muller and Jochem Schneider.

The American Statehouse - Interpreting Democracy's Temples (Hardcover): Charles T. Goodsell The American Statehouse - Interpreting Democracy's Temples (Hardcover)
Charles T. Goodsell
R1,621 Discovery Miles 16 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The American Statehouse examines the interplay of architecture and politics in all fifty state capitols. Using both careful analysis and photographs of exteriors and interiors, Goodsell demonstrates how the architectural elements embody political values and ideas; influence how politicians, lobbyists, and the news media behave; and both awe and unite the citizenry. He concludes that a statehouse's design is an intentional expression of how to practice politics democratically.

The American state capitol is a "statehouse" in that it was historically conceived as the center and home of all of state government. As a building type, it emerged in the early nineteenth century and flowered in the early twentieth. One of the very few purely American architectural forms, the statehouse not only encloses but also symbolizes American democracy at the state level.

That all three branches of government, not to mention the state bureaucracy initially, were housed under one roof meant that the doctrine of the separation of powers had to be "worked out" in close quarters, often in revealing ways. What also evolved in the statehouse was a distinct style of politics that mixed colorful leadership, varied partisanship, bicameral opposition, deliberative debate, insider lobbying, uninhibited reporting, bureaucratic growth, and populist activism. All of these elements both affected and were acted upon by the built form--the statehouse--of state government.

At the nexus of architectural studies and political science, this book is about the interaction of architecture and politics in America's state capitols. Goodsell offers what he calls a social interpretation of architecture. Toward this end, he utilizes three conceptual frameworks: one devoted to seeking political values or ideas embedded within the buildings, a second concerned with the effects of the buildings on contemporary political behavior, and a third seeking to appraise larger impressions the buildings make on society. Goodsell concludes that the statehouse enshrines both majestic state authority on the one hand and liberal representative government on the other. The American statehouse, then, is not just a temple but a temple of democracy.

Woolworth's - 100 Years on the High Street (Hardcover, UK ed.): Kathryn A. Morrison Woolworth's - 100 Years on the High Street (Hardcover, UK ed.)
Kathryn A. Morrison
R2,206 Discovery Miles 22 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Woolworth's bright red signboard was a beacon on British and Irish high streets for nearly a century. American in origin, Woolworth's grew rapidly after the first branch opened in Liverpool in 1909. The business model - with inexpensive goods piled on counter tops - scored an immediate hit with British consumers. By 1930 there were 400 stores, and by 1960 over 1000. With its own architects' department and regional construction teams, Woolworth's erected hundreds of prominent stores in shopping centres throughout England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It is these buildings - often typical of the commercial architecture of their day - which provide the focus of this book. This is not, however, a conventional architectural history - it is the story of Woolworth's seen through the prism of its stores. The Woolworth's chain was of huge cultural importance, shaping and reflecting fundamental changes - mostly American in origin - that took place in the nation's shopping habits. Despite its dominant position on the high street, by the 1960s Woolworth's was beginning to lose its way. As people acquired cars and freezers and began to desert the high street, Woolworth's tried to stay ahead of the game with unsuccessful ventures into out-of-town and catalogue shopping. But by the time of its demise in 2009, a shrunken Woolworth's owned just two of the stores which it had built and developed over the preceding century. The closure of the last British stores in January 2009 provoked an outpouring of nostalgia and grief. Woolworth's occupied the heart of many communities, physically and commercially, and its heritage deserves celebration.

Bells for America - The Cold War, Modernism, and the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington (Hardcover): Diederik Oostdijk Bells for America - The Cold War, Modernism, and the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington (Hardcover)
Diederik Oostdijk
R1,860 Discovery Miles 18 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Netherlands Carillon stands out in the American memorial landscape. Situated between Arlington National Cemetery and the Marine Corps War Memorial, the modernist design of this 127-foot steel bell tower is strangely at odds with its surroundings, much in the same way that its prominent place is at odds with its absence in American memory. In this book, Diederik Oostdijk reveals the intriguing history of this major monument hidden in plain sight. Given to the United States in the 1950s by the Dutch government as a gesture of gratitude for America’s role in the Dutch liberation during World War II and for the Marshall Plan aid that helped rebuild the Dutch economy, the carillon owes its conspicuous placement to the Cold War. Oostdijk traces the history of this monument, from its creation and the pageantry surrounding its presentation through its fall into disrepair and plans for its renewal. In so doing, he resolves the paradox of the carillon’s placement in Arlington and unearths a fascinating and compelling story of diplomacy and humanity. Interweaving art history, campanology, landscape architecture, literature, musicology, and diplomatic history, Bells for America recounts how the Netherlands and the United States reconstructed their national identities and fostered an international relationship in the postwar era through public art.

Theater of Shopping tells the story of retail visionary Stanley Whitman and the creation of Bal Harbour Shops, the most successful luxury fashion shopping centre in the world*, and one of the last family-owned malls in America. Written by critically acclaimed author Alastair Gordon, Theater of Shopping is a cultural history of both a place and a personal legacy. The open-air mall opened in 1965 as a pedestrian-friendly environment that turned shopping into a kind of theatrical event, while featuring the work of young design talents like Valentino, Versace, Mugler, de La Renta, and other foreign designers who were unknown in America before first showcasing their collections at Bal Harbour Shops. The text weaves together fashion, luxury commerce, architecture, landscape design, urban development, and family history, to create a highly readable narrative illustrated with more than 300 images including never-before-published drawings, plans and photographs by renowned photographers including Richard Avedon and Ezra Stoller.

Founded in 2008, the French-Lebanese firm of Youssef Tohme Architects and Associates has a delicate signature that takes the regional context as its starting point in developing an individual architectural language. By using a wide variety of materials that interact with the built environment, they create buildings that evolve over time alongside their inhabitants. The book documents twelve of the firm's projects - from a single-family home to a museum, including urban interventions in Beirut, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Bucharest. The book also includes an essay that takes a comprehensive look at the working methods of this firm, focusing in particular on the dimension of time and the changes that occur as the buildings are used.

"...exquisite coffee-table book presents breathtaking buildings by superstar Japanese architect Kengo Kuma" - Daily Mail Kengo Kuma is a globally acclaimed Japanese architect whose prodigious output possesses an inherent respect and value of materials and environment, often creating a harmonious balance between building and landscape. He masterfully engages both architectural experimentation and traditional Japanese design with twenty-first-century technology, resulting in highly advanced yet beautifully simple, gentle, human-scaled buildings. He's renowned for the drive to search for new materials to replace concrete and steel, seeking a new approach for architecture in a post-industrial society, and fusing interior and exterior realms to make spaces that both create a calming and tranquil atmosphere and which "transform" topography. In the pages of this exquisitely illustrated volume, Kuma presents close to forty of his most recognised and award-winning works, including FRAC Marseille, V&A Dundee, Mont-Blanc Base Camp, and Japan National Stadium. Kuma continues to forge a new design language: in this book he offers the reader deep insight into how he has engaged with different aspects of the architectural discipline by transforming topography, construction, and representation in order to give further progress to his ideas.

Designing the V&A: The Museum as a Work of Art (1857-1909) 2017 (Hardcover): Julius Bryant Designing the V&A: The Museum as a Work of Art (1857-1909) 2017 (Hardcover)
Julius Bryant
R1,177 Discovery Miles 11 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The building of the Victoria and Albert Museum, begun in 1857, is the most elaborately designed and decorated museum in Britain. This book is the first to consider the V&A as a work of art in itself, presenting drawings, watercolours and historic photographs relating to the Museum's 19th-century interiors. Much of this visual material is previously unpublished and is outside the canon of Victorian art and design. The V&A's first Director, Henry Cole, conceived the Museum's building as a showcase for leading Victorian artists to design and decorate. This book reveals for the first time the ways in which Cole's expressed policy to 'assemble a splendid collection of objects representing the application of Fine Arts to manufacture' was applied to the fabric of the building, as he engaged leading painters such as Frederic Leighton , G.F. Watts and Edward Burne-Jones, as well as specialists in decoration such as Owen Jones and Morris and Company, to decorate and design for a building raised by engineers using innovatory materials and techniques. It represents a fascinating, untold chapter in the history of British 19th-century art, design, architecture and museums, and an essential backdrop to understanding the evolution of the Museum's early collections and identity.

Elaborately conceived, grandly constructed insane asylumsOCoranging in appearance from classical temples to Gothic castlesOCowere once a common sight looming on the outskirts of American towns and cities. Many of these buildings were razed long ago, and those that remain stand as grim reminders of an often cruel system. For much of the nineteenth century, however, these asylums epitomized the widely held belief among doctors and social reformers that insanity was a curable disease and that environmentOCoarchitecture in particularOCowas the most effective means of treatment.

a

In "The Architecture of Madness, " Carla Yanni tells a compelling story of therapeutic design, from AmericaOCOs earliest purposeOCobuilt institutions for the insane to the asylum construction frenzy in the second half of the century. At the center of YanniOCOs inquiry is Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, a Pennsylvania-born Quaker, who in the 1840s devised a novel way to house the mentally diseased that emphasized segregation by severity of illness, ease of treatment and surveillance, and ventilation. After the Civil War, American architects designed Kirkbride-plan hospitals across the country.

a

Before the end of the century, interest in the Kirkbride plan had begun to decline. Many of the asylums had deteriorated into human warehouses, strengthening arguments against the monolithic structures advocated by Kirkbride. At the same time, the medical profession began embracing a more neurological approach to mental disease that considered architecture as largely irrelevant to its treatment.

a

Generously illustrated, "The Architecture of Madness" is a fresh and original look at the American medical establishmentOCOs century-long preoccupation with therapeutic architecture as a way to cure social ills.

Do you like to go treasure hunting in obvious or out of the way places? Do you like to view fine art in galleries large and small? This book will give you directions to New Mexico's amazing New Deal treasures and to buildings and bridges, murals and sculptures, paintings and people who made them. They are not necessarily in the most obvious places, and yet many are in places that one routinely visits. They have been patiently waiting in our cities, our villages, our parks, rarely witnessed as being "treasures." They were constructed perhaps even by your own artistic ancestors. This book is full of clues. Go sleuthing Growing up in Portales, New Mexico, Kathryn Akers Flynn lived in an area with a New Deal courthouse, a New Deal post office, and New Deal schools. She worked at the local swimming pool and partied in the city park, both built during the Depression era. In high school she was a cheerleader on 1930s football fields for onlookers in Work Progress Administration bleachers and camped out at a nearby Civilian Conservation Corps created park and lake. She never knew any of these structures were fashioned by the New Deal, nor did she notice the New Deal treasures in Salt Lake City while at the University of Utah where she received her Bachelor's Degree or the New Deal structures in Carbondale, Illinois where she earned her Master's Degree at Southern Illinois University. Returning to New Mexico, she had a career in the state health and mental health administration that included directorship of Carrie Tingley Hospital, a New Deal facility with many public art treasures. It wasn't until she became Deputy Secretary of State of New Mexico that she realized what was around her. As a result she went on to edit three editions of the "New Mexico Blue Book" featuring information about New Deal creations all over the state. This book presents the history and whereabouts of many such treasures found since compiling an earlier book, "Treasures on New Mexico Trails," and another that focuses on New Deal programs nationwide, "The New Deal: A 75th Anniversary Celebration." She also assisted with the compilation of "A More Abundant Life, New Deal Artists and Public Art in New Mexico" by Jacqueline Hoefer, also from Sunstone Press and an apt companion for "Public Art and Architecture in New Mexico." She was instrumental in creating the National New Deal Preservation Association, and now serves as Executive Director.

The Making of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (Hardcover, New): J. C Hopkins The Making of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (Hardcover, New)
J. C Hopkins
R1,818 Discovery Miles 18 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is "the" story of The Making of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park by the Olympic Delivery Authority. Situated in east London adjacent to Victoria Park, one of the world's earliest public parks built in the 19th century, the Park provides an innovative blueprint for contemporary urban park design and is recognised as an exemplar sustainable development for the 21st century. As a primary legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Park was conceived as a new piece of sustainable city, transforming a largely neglected, contaminated, post-industrial district, into a new community for up to 20,000 residents, shifting the centre of gravity of London eastwards.

Written by those at the heart of the project, it draws significantly on contributions from the many experts who have shaped and guided the creation of the Park, including interviews with the key players responsible for delivering the project. It provides the only authoritative account of the planning, design and construction of the Park beginning with the bid to host the games, setting out its historical, philosophical and physical context; describing the strategic fit within the Thames Gateway, Lower Lea Valley and Stratford City; explaining how One Planet Living principles developed by WWF and BioRegional underpinned sustainability throughout the project; and concludes with a 'Walk in Park' capturing its essence for both Games and Legacy.

Richly illustrated, it is a unique reference for those involved in the planning, design, delivery and management of sustainable urban parks and new communities on post-industrial and other land, and those seeking to host future Games and other large-scale international events.

Halley VI Research Station is the first fully re-locatable research station in the world. It was commissioned in 2006 and its unique and innovative structure was the result of an international design competition in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The research facility is segmented into eight modules, each sitting atop ski-fitted, hydraulic legs that can be individually raised to overcome snow accumulation, allowing the module to be towed independently to a new location. Halley VI is designed by London-based Hugh Broughton Architects and AECOM, a global engineering design firm. The new book tells the story of this exciting piece of architecture in an essay by Ruth Slavid. Around 100 photographs, mostly in colour, plans and diagrams document the various modules of the re-locatable station and its present site. Captions offering comprehensive technical information about the structure complement the images. Photographs are contributed by British photographer James Morris, who has gained much international recognition for his work in architectural and landscape photography.

R3,524 Discovery Miles 35 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Building as Screen: A History, Theory, and Practice of Massive Media describes, historicizes, theorizes, and creatively deploys massive media -- a set of techno-social assemblages and practices that include large outdoor projections, programmable architectural facades, and urban screens -- in order to better understand their critical and creative potential. Massive media is named as such not only because of the size and subsequent visibility of this phenomenon but also for its characteristic networks and interactive screen and cinema-like qualities. Examples include the programmable lighting of the Empire State Building and the interactive projections of Montreal's Quartier des spectacles, as well as a number of works created by the author himself. This book argues that massive media enables and necessitates the development of new practices of expanded cinema, public data visualization, and installation art and curation that blend the logics of urban space, monumentality, and the public sphere with the aesthetics and affordances of digital information and the moving image.
