Good operations and supply chain management practices are essential for the existence of both private and public organisations offering goods or rendering services. Trends in operations and supply chain management is aimed at undergraduate students as well as professionals working in industry to support the sustainable business practices and goals of their organisations.
This book takes a process approach of identifying, evaluating, selecting, managing and developing suppliers to create more value for customers. It begins by outlining the mental shift necessary to build robust relationships with suppliers. Next, the book details strategic sourcing methodology: a step-by-step approach for creating productive relationships with key suppliers, providing illustrations and examples from the author's experience throughout. The third and final part of the book provides details of a comprehensive process developed to arm the negotiation team with all facts necessary to reach desired outcomes. This detailed step-by-step process consists of negotiation strategy and case building, supplier response and positioning, negotiation planning, discussions, and resolution, and supplier evaluation. In addition, the book highlights best practices in strategic sourcing representing tactics for buyers to leverage their buying power to ensure they attain full value. These best practices are drawn from several strategic sourcing projects carried out for leading companies in the USA over several years.
Supply Chain Management (SCM) is not a buzzword like many others in management and IT - it is here to stay. "Megatrends" such as globalization and increasing specialization result in a complex division of labor at national and international levels. Lean and agile supply chains have become a major management target, and the interorganizational coordination of business processes has become highly relevant. The complexity of today's supply chains cannot be mastered without the support of powerful information systems. SAP has established itself as the market leader in this type of IT systems. The book describes SCM using a pyramidal framework and relates it to the SAP SCM Solution Map. Desired features of IT support for SCM are formulated, and the extent to which SAP systems provide these features is shown. We describe the functionalities of SAP APO in detail, present case studies on implementing and running SAP SCM systems, and discuss SCM aspects of the new SAP Business ByDesign approach. "
Licensing, Selling and Finance in the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Industries is an assessment of the turbulent state of pharmaceutical and biotechnology markets as we enter the second decade of the 21st Century. At the same time, the book offers a cautionary evaluation of the future financing of innovation in terms of what's gone wrong and how to succeed in the future. Martin Austin explores the challenge that the pharmaceutical (and related) industries face in terms of balancing short term, cost containment and expenditure control in areas such as internal research and development; whilst embracing in-licensing and the acquisition of innovative therapies to counteract their impending portfolio weaknesses in the mid to longer term. The first part of the book provides an engaging and convincing perspective on the context in which the industry currently finds itself; the second part is a pragmatic guide to commercialising your intellectual property; including how to recognise and value what you have as well as the new ways of working that you will need to adopt when negotiating, collaborating and contracting in partnership and alliance with others. Commentators have described in great detail the cocktail of commercial, clinical and social issues that threaten to overwhelm the pharmaceutical industry; Martin Austin's book offers a very distinctive perspective on these issues and their solution.
The scope of this book is limited to heuristics, metaheuristics, and approximate methods and algorithms as applied to planning and scheduling problems. While it is not possible to give a comprehensive treatment of this topic in one book, the aim of this work is to provide the reader with a diverse set of planning and scheduling problems and different heuristic approaches to solve them. The problems range from traditional single stage and parallel machine problems to more modern settings such as robotic cells and flexible job shop networks. Furthermore, some chapters deal with deterministic problems while some others treat stochastic versions of the problems. Unlike most of the literature that deals with planning and scheduling problems in the manufacturing and production environments, in this book the environments were extended to nontraditional applications such as spatial scheduling (optimizing space over time), runway scheduling, and surgical scheduling. The solution methods used in the different chapters of the book also spread from well-established heuristics and metaheuristics such as Genetic Algorithms and Ant Colony Optimization to more recent ones such as Meta-RaPS.
The market and demand for Halal goods and services is ever increasing and, with it, the importance of supply chain integrity. Integrity from the perspective of Halal logistics service providers is a prerequisite of Halal compliance. This book provides a unique overview of Halal supply chain integrity (HSCI) using examples from Malaysia. The book carefully addresses and simplifies the issue of integrity in Halal logistics and supply chain. It gathers findings from a Halal supply chain integrity study from the leading country in Halal, Malaysia, to shed light of current issues, developments and future trends on the theory and practice of Halal in the logistics sector. In particular, the book discusses factors such as Halal quality assurance, trust and commitment, and halal assets specificity. This will be a useful reference for researchers, scholars and upper-level students who wish to understand Halal logistics and supply chain management and the importance of protecting integrity of Halal services and products.
Effective Document and Data Management illustrates the operational and strategic significance of how documents and data are captured, managed and utilized. Without a coherent and consistent approach the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization may be undermined by less poor management and use of its information. The third edition of the book is restructured to take this broader view and to establish an organizational context in which information is management. Along the way Bob Wiggins clarifies the distinction between information management, data management and knowledge management; helps make sense of the concept of an information life cycle to present and describe the processes and techniques of information and data management, storage and retrieval; uses worked examples to illustrate the coordinated application of data and process analysis; and provides guidance on the application of appropriate project management techniques for document and records management projects. The book will benefit a range of organizations and people, from those senior managers who need to develop coherent and consistent business and IT strategies; to information professionals, such as records managers and librarians who will gain an appreciation of the impact of the technology and of how their particular areas of expertise can best be applied; to system designers, developers and implementers and finally to users. This new book, Logistics Management, blends traditional logistics activities with the current developments in business that have made logistics a critical element for business success. It adopts a customer or marketing focus to the subject of logistics, and the wider concept of supply chain management, by recognizing that customer satisfaction is the primary output of logistics activities. The theme of global logistics integrated throughout the current edition will also continue and will be enhanced by discussion of the dichotomy that the European market represents both a common and global environment.

Local Content in Procurement is the first book of its kind. Recognizing the substantial economic and social value brought to host countries and local communities through the procurement practices of large private and public companies, this book by Dr Michael Warner - Director of the consultancy firm Local Content Solutions and former architect of the Local Content standards for BG Group - provides a first-hand account of the Local Content regulations, strategies and procurement processes needed to realise these social benefits. Acknowledging that the employment and industrial benefits of large-scale procurement have been sorely overlooked, this book is both a how-to manual and a thoughtful insight into the challenge of creating sustainable jobs and competitive national industries through expenditure on bought-in goods and services. With literally trillions of dollars of goods and services being procured over the next ten years in exploring and developing for oil, gas and mineral resources across the globe, the book focuses on these sectors, yet also has wide application to the utilities, construction, infrastructure, manufacturing and defence sectors. Local Content in Procurement has been written for those working for the procurement, strategy and social responsibility departments of major private and public companies and international suppliers, for industrial and economic policy-makers and regulators of local content, and for all those involved in the management of procurement expenditure to develop national and local industries.
Supply Chain Management is an intensively discussed topic within industrial and business management. A technique that is increasingly gaining importance is the Supply Chain Operations Reference Model (SCOR model) by the Supply-Chain Council (www.supply-chain.org). Despite the popularity of the SCOR model, there exists a dearth of scientific research into its applicability. This book is the first exploratory examination and systematic presentation of the scientific applicability of the SCOR model by a PhD and seasoned SAP executive who brings to the task a wealth of knowledge and industry relevant materials and perspectives. "This book offers an explorative and interim result towards the scientific research into the SCOR model and its application. The author has benefited from his extensive experience in the practice of consultation and his ability to call upon the use of relevant data and material." - Prof. Dr. Dietrich Seibt, University of Cologne, Germany
The enterprise-focused framework of supply chain, which an overwhelming majority of books on supply chain management (SCM) have adopted, falls short in explaining recent developments in the real world, especially the so-called Wal-Mart model, in which a 'factory' is a virtual logistics network of multiple international manufacturing firms. The book fills the gap and examines supply chain and transport logistics. The success of the Wal-Mart model rests on dynamic innovations in two key dimensions, namely, all-mode logistics service facilitation and industrial organization of supply chains, on which existing SCM textbooks have little coverage. For example, managing transport utility and facility, such as seaports and airports, has become expected parts of logistics and SCM, especially in an international orientation; which, however, are seldom covered in the textbooks on SCM and logistics. Supply chain and transport logistics as termed in this book is precisely based on this intriguing interrelationship, referring to supply-chain centered logistics of enterprise-crossing characteristics, including both service facilitation and industrial organization (IO) aspects of logistics. This book also includes the development of a unified methodological framework which underpins all the characteristics of the intriguing interrelationship between supply chain management and logistics. It covers many aspects of the important and innovative developments well. The book offers a unique coverage of integrated logistics of navigation, aviation and transportation. The book not only answers the urgent need for a book on supply chain management and transport logistics but also highlights the central role of supply chain logistics in the emerging fields of sustainable (green), humanitarian and maritime supply chains and the importance of studying supply chain management together with transport logistics. It also explains the difference between supply chain

Risk is of fundamental importance in this era of the global economy. Supply chains must into account the uncertainty of demand. Moreover, the risk of uncertain demand can cut two ways: (1) there is the risk that unexpected demand will not be met on time, and the reverse problem (2) the risk that demand is over estimated and excessive inventory costs are incurred. There are other risks in unreliable vendors, delayed shipments, natural disasters, etc. In short, there are a host of strategic, tactical and operational risks to business supply chains. Supply Chain Risk: A Handbook of Assessment, Management, and Performance will focus on how to assess, evaluate, and control these various risks.
