Systap Onder Die Juk (Afrikaans, Paperback): Dot Serfontein Systap Onder Die Juk (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Dot Serfontein
R82 Discovery Miles 820 Ships in 6 - 10 working days

Lara Maiklem
R440 R402 Discovery Miles 4 020 Save R38 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A Field Guide to Larking is a practical, interactive and inspiring guide to 'larking' from the bestselling author of Mudlarking. LARK (verb): to get out and about, to explore the world around us and to discover the little treasures hiding in plain sight. We think, of course, of mudlarking but there is also beachlarking, fieldlarking or even simply exploring your own home with fresh eyes. In this beautiful field guide, Lara teaches us how to lark for ourselves. There are maps and charts, tips and lists, and colour illustrations throughout to help identify finds. From tide tables for mudlarkers to a flint guide for fieldlarkers, this book is richly informative and yet small enough to pop in a pocket. Like a journal it invites you to interact - to make notes and record finds along the way. If Lara Maiklem's first book was a glimpse into a hidden world, with this field guide she shows us how we can discover it for ourselves.

Manchan Magan
R682 R595 Discovery Miles 5 950 Save R87 (13%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Our ancestors developed a uniquely nature-focused society, centred on esteemed poets, seers, monks, healers and wise women who were deeply connected to the land. They used this connection to the cycles of the natural world - from which we are increasingly dissociated - as an animating force in their lives. In this illuminating new book, Manchan Magan sets out on a journey, through bogs, across rivers and over mountains, to trace these ancestor's footsteps. He uncovers the ancient myths that have shaped our national identity and are embedded in the strata of land that have endured through millennia - from ice ages through to famines and floods. Here, the River Shannon is a goddess, and trees and their life-sustaining root systems are hallowed. See the world in a new light in this magical exploration into the life-sustaining wisdom of what lies beneath us. 'We could do with a lot more characters like [Manchan] dotted about this world.' Irish Independent 'Manchan creates a gorgeous tapestry that lingers in the mind's eye.' Kerri Ni Dochartaigh 'Manchan['s] ... got some theories about the roots of the Irish language that are going to blow your head off ... an incredible storyteller.' Blindboy Boatclub Manchan's passion for Ireland's ecological and poetic heritage is more urgently relevant than ever.' Darach O Seaghdha

The Cultural Heritage of Coastal Suffolk (Hardcover): Peter Willsher The Cultural Heritage of Coastal Suffolk (Hardcover)
Peter Willsher
R634 Discovery Miles 6 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An intriguing account of what has attracted musicians, artists, writers and people of the theatre to the delights of coastal Suffolk over the last 200 years and beyond. Inspiration has been drawn from the constantly changing North Sea, the generously proportioned skies, vast areas of serene marshes and abundant wildlife. All appear to be persuaded that there is something very special about the area. The likes of JMW Turner, Philip Wilson Steer and Charles Rennie Mackintosh found what they wanted here. The same applied to Benjamin Britten, Yehudi Menuhin, EM Forster and WH Auden. Elizabeth Jane Howard's books are as popular as ever and Jill Freud's Summer Theatre continues to thrive. There is something for everyone in coastal Suffolk.

Aura Reggiani, Laurie A. Schintler, Daniel Czamanski, Roberto Patuelli
R8,859 Discovery Miles 88 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This ground-breaking Handbook presents a state-of-the-art exploration of entropy, complexity, and spatial dynamics from fundamental theoretical, empirical and methodological perspectives. It considers how foundational theories can contribute to new advances, including novel modeling and empirical insights at different sectoral, spatial, and temporal scales. With the help of leading experts worldwide, the Handbook examines how and to what extent entropic and non-entropic forces and processes in complex spatial socio-economic systems shape and are shaped by their structure and dynamics. Moreover, considering current concerns that big data and related data-driven methods may signal an end to theory, this Handbook is intended to investigate the potential and possibilities for complexity science to engage, revitalize, and advance theory in spatial economics. Overall, this Handbook reaches beyond qualitative generalizations, contributing to the identification of fundamental structural and dynamic properties of the complex space-economy. Drawing upon diverse foundations and perspectives, the Handbook on Entropy, Complexity and Spatial Dynamics: A Rebirth of Theory? will be an essential resource for researchers and students of many fields and disciplines, including economics, urban planning and geography, regional science, information science, physics, and biology.

National Identities and Foreign Policy in the European Union - The Russia Policy of Germany, Poland and Finland (Hardcover):... National Identities and Foreign Policy in the European Union - The Russia Policy of Germany, Poland and Finland (Hardcover)
Marco Siddi
R1,913 Discovery Miles 19 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the relationship between national identity and foreign policy discourses on Russia in Germany, Poland and Finland in the years 2005–2015. The case studies focus on the Nord Stream pipeline controversy, the 2008 Russian-Georgian war, the post-electoral protests in Russian cities in 2011–2012 and the Ukraine crisis. Siddi argues that divergent foreign policy narratives of Russia are rooted in different national identity constructions. Most significantly, the Ukraine crisis and the Nord Stream controversy have exposed how deep-rooted and different perceptions of the 'Russian Other' in EU member states are still influential and lead to conflicting national agendas for foreign policy towards Russia.

Europe's Mediterranean Neighbourhood - An Integrated Geography (Hardcover): Pierre Beckouche Europe's Mediterranean Neighbourhood - An Integrated Geography (Hardcover)
Pierre Beckouche
R3,695 Discovery Miles 36 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Illustrated with pioneering maps and country analyses by a network of researchers from across the Mediterranean, this book takes a territorial approach as a way toward a shared vision for a truly integrated Euro-Mediterranean region. At a time when the region is undergoing rapid change, the main goal of the book is to challenge misconceptions with common geographic data, on issues such as transport, energy, agriculture and water. The book suggests avenues for Europe to regain a part of the influence it has lost on its Mediterranean neighbourhood and policies common to Europe and its southern neighbours. The wide range of geographic country analyses, from Morocco to Turkey and including the occupied Palestinian territory and Jordan, are complemented with new maps at the scale of the wider Euro-Mediterranean region. The contributions contend that cross-border cooperation, common transport networks and shared environmental management can foster partnership when diplomatic relations are stalling. The Gibraltar case study shows that while competition is rising between the two sides of the strait their potential complementarity is also very high. The book calls for a Euro-Mediterranean local data collaborative platform to drive a common 'Neighbourhoods Territorial Agenda' for North-South shared vision and action. This timely and enlightening book is essential reading for those studying regional, European, Mediterranean and Arab world issues. It will appeal to policymakers and actors involved in cross-border cooperation, territorial development, environment, cultural knowledge and networking. Contributors include: M. Ababsa, P. Beckouche, N. Ben Cheikh, P. Besnard, Y. Cohen, G. Faour, J. Hilal, O. Isik, E. Larrea, J.-Y. Moisseron, Z. Ouadah-Bedidi, D. Pages El Karoui, H. Pecout, R. Tabib, A. Ulied, G. Van Hamme, I. Zboun

Isabelle Thomas
R4,052 Discovery Miles 40 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The relationship between the shape of transportation networks and the optimal locations and allocations of human activities is examined in this unique volume. Simulations are performed on different toy-networks: several transportation networks are designed and their effects on location-allocation results are tested on different markets. Several optimal location models are used. The author then attempts to discover how the modelling results are affected by negative externalities or zone pricing policies. Finally, these results are applied to real-world situations, illustrating and confirming the results of the simulations performed on toy-networks. This volume will be considered as an interesting and original approach for location-modellers as well as planners. Transportation Networks and the Optimal Location of Human Activities will also appeal to geographers, spatial economists, location-allocation practitioners and transportation researchers.

Creating the American West - Boundaries and Borderlands (Hardcover): Derek R Everett Creating the American West - Boundaries and Borderlands (Hardcover)
Derek R Everett
R1,068 Discovery Miles 10 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Boundaries--lines imposed on the landscape--shape our lives, dictating everything from which candidates we vote for to what schools our children attend to the communities with which we identify. In "Creating the American West," historian Derek R. Everett examines the function of these internal lines in American history generally and in the West in particular. Drawing lines to create states in the trans-Mississippi West, he points out, imposed a specific form of political organization that made the West truly American.

Everett examines how settlers lobbied for boundaries and how politicians imposed them. He examines the origins of boundary-making in the United States from the colonial era through the Louisiana Purchase. Case studies then explore the ethnic, sectional, political, and economic angles of boundaries. Everett first examines the boundaries between Arkansas and its neighboring Native cultures, and the pseudo war between Missouri and Iowa. He then traces the lines splitting the Oregon Country and the states of California and Nevada, and considers the ethnic and political consequences of the boundary between New Mexico and Colorado. He explains the evolution of the line splitting the Dakotas, and concludes with a discussion of ways in which state boundaries can contribute toward new interpretations of borderlands history.

A major theme in the history of state boundaries is the question of whether to use geometric or geographic lines--in other words, lines corresponding to parallels and meridians or those fashioned by natural features. With the distribution of western land, Everett shows, geography gave way to geometry and transformed the West. The end of boundary-making in the late nineteenth century is not the end of the story, however. These lines continue to complicate a host of issues including water rights, taxes, political representation, and immigration. "Creating the American West" shows how the past continues to shape the present.

Civility in Crisis - Democracy, Equality and the Majoritarian Challenge in India (Paperback): Suryakant Waghmore, Hugo Gorringe Civility in Crisis - Democracy, Equality and the Majoritarian Challenge in India (Paperback)
Suryakant Waghmore, Hugo Gorringe
R1,179 Discovery Miles 11 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book critically examines the relationship between civility, citizenship and democracy. It engages with the oft-neglected idea of civility (as a Western concept) to explore the paradox of high democracy and low civility that plagues India. This concept helps analyse why democratic consolidation translates into limited justice and minimal equality, along with increased exclusion and performative violence against marginal groups in India. The volume brings together key themes such as minority citizens and the incivility of caste, civility and urbanity, the struggles for 'dignity' and equality pursued by subaltern groups along with feminism and queer politics, and the exclusionary politics of the Citizenship Amendment Act, to argue that civility provides crucial insights into the functioning and social life of a democracy. In doing so, the book illustrates how a successful democracy may also harbour illiberal values and normalised violence and civil societies may have uncivil tendencies. Enriched with case studies from various states in India, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of political science, political philosophy, South Asian studies, minority and exclusion studies, political sociology and social anthropology.
