Children with chronic conditions, developmental disorders, and birth defects represent a sizeable minority of American children-as many as one in five. Often their families have financial or other issues limiting their access to appropriate care, thus limiting their adult prospects as well. Compounding the problem, many valuable resources concerning this population are difficult to access although they may be critical to the researchers, practitioners, and policymakers creating standards for quality care and services. In response, the Handbook of Children with Special Health Care Needs assembles research, applied, and policy perspectives reflecting the range of children's problems requiring special services. Widely studied conditions (e.g., communication disorders, substance abuse) and those receiving lesser attention (e.g., tuberculosis) are covered, as are emerging ideas such as the "medical home" concept of continuity of care. Its interdisciplinary outlook makes the Handbook of Children with Special Health Care Needs a vital, forward-looking text for developmental psychologists, pediatricians, early childhood and special education researchers and practitioners, disability researchers, policymakers, and advocates, and providers for children with special health care needs.

One of the greatest challenges facing modern global health is how to include the most marginalized and impoverished people in international efforts to promote social and economic development. In Disability and International Development disability rights are situated within the broader context of global health and the need for much greater inter-sector collaboration. Reports from a broad cross-section of low- and middle-income countries-locales as diverse as Zimbabwe, Bolivia, Kyrgyzstan, and Papua New Guinea-move beyond surface discussions of "what is working" and "what shows promise" to discuss political and governance contexts, the roles of disabled persons in research by outsiders, concurrent struggles (e.g., women's or children's rights), and instructive inroads made by community activists and national Disabled People's Organizations. The results are provocative, and offer new lenses for viewing both the issues and the populations they affect. Each of the book's chapters spotlights a topic as representative of the enormity and immediacy of challenges to inclusive global health, including: The impact of international human rights law on domestic law and local traditions. The effect of failed states on the lives of people with disabilities. Empowerment and advocacy: disability organizations and movements. HIV/AIDS interventions with disabled persons. Assistive technologies in low-income countries. Strategies for improving the lives of children with disabilities. Cross-disciplinary as well as cross-cultural, Disability and International Development will attract a wide audience of professionals in rehabilitation, social welfare and human rights; governmental and non-governmental organizations and disabled people's organizations; researchers and practitioners. It will also be relevant to those working in health and welfare administration, health policy, international aid and development, and human rights. In addition, graduate students in disability studies, public and global health and international development should find this an important guide to the future of these fields.

"An extraordinary story that you will pick up and finish in a few hours of remarkable reading. The account of her son's and her family's regeneration is simply inspiring. It will be instructive to any family with a child with a disabling condition. But as the account of a transfiguring experience and the sensitive interpretation of how it came about, it speaks to all of us."--Arthur Kleinman, Harvard Medical School, author of "Writing at the Margin" "Ruthann Johansen's loving account of the aftermath of her son's traumatic brain injury is an extraordinary book, . . . at once a profound meditation about the inextricable relationship between language, story-telling, and self-formation and a moving account of how one young man reconstructed his life in dialogue with the solicitations and offerings of family, friends, and caring others. This book should be read by everyone who is interested in the nature of identity and selfhood."--Janice A. Radway, Duke University, author of "A Feeling for Books: The Book-Of-The-Month Club, Literary Taste, and Middle-Class Desire "This book clearly asks the question: Who speaks for the traumatically brain injured? It should be required reading for all neuroscientists who are providers of care or who are diligently conducting research to find a therapy that truly produces recovery of function."--David A. Hovda, Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Brain Injury Research Center, University of California, Los Angeles "A singular contribution to our understanding of brain injury as illness experience, of the family dynamics of care, and of the narrative nature of lives and brains. The writing is lyrical, moving, and scholarly, not by turns butat the same time. Johansen conveys mother love, feminist self-awareness, and a critical social perspective to provide a unique account of family life through continuing trauma."--Arthur W. Frank, author of "The Wounded Storyteller: Body, Illness, and Ethics "This book is gripping and inspired. . . . It will be of great solace and usefulness to others who find themselves in such circumstances, part of the literature of family disaster. It will find an audience as well among all those concerned with what might be called the construction of the self, which would include a good many in various psychological fields."--F. Robert Rodman, author of "Not Dying: A Memoir
IPeripheral Neurology was the first book to make innovative use of case presentations as a vehicle for teaching peripheral neurology. In fact, it was the first to categorize the field of peripheral neurology, as most other neurology texts concentrated on diseases of the central nervous system. This case approach has since been emulated in many other texts and on various web sites. Emphasizing the clinical conditoin rather than the electrodiagnostic technique, each topic is thoroughly addressed, first in the Fundamental Concepts of Part I, and then in multiple Case Studies presented in Part II. The reader is able to simulate a true clinical environment where a diagnosis has to be arrived at with no organizational clues from the text. Formulating conclusions by analysing the history, physical, and laboratory data, and linking from case to related case, this is the only text which allows this type of "interactive" reading. The book addresses many rare entities that the author is able to present based on his 30-years of experience.
For those who suffer from a combined psychiatric illness and chemical dependency The six out of one hundred people diagnosed with the dual disorders of addiction and mental disorder face unique challenges on the road to recovery. With comprehensive information and illustrative, inspiring case studies, "The Dual Diagnosis Recovery Sourcebook" explores the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual approaches to recovering from this often misunderstood and yet surprisingly common condition. |
