Margaret Schenkman, James Bowman, Robyn Gisbert, Russell Butler
R3,528 Discovery Miles 35 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"TEXTBOOK OF FUNCTIONAL AND CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE" is designed to help students understand the nervous system structures and functions that allow for complex neurophysiological processing in support of human functions and behavior. Students are guided through learning the vocabulary of contemporary neuroscience, understanding the nervous system's structural organization and communications mechanisms, and learning how structures are linked anatomically and functionally to mediate specific behaviors. To facilitate learning, this text builds incrementally on basic information to introduce increasingly detailed and complex structures, functions, and terminology. As students proceed, they develop working knowledge for predicting neurological problems associated with specific diseases or injury, and analyzing appropriate interventions.

The Man Who Wasn't There - Tales from the Edge of the Self (Paperback): Anil Ananthaswamy The Man Who Wasn't There - Tales from the Edge of the Self (Paperback)
Anil Ananthaswamy 1
R242 Discovery Miles 2 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reveals the mind boggling neuroscience connecting brain, body, mind, and society, by examining a range of brain disorders, in the tradition of Oliver Sacks. Identifying what makes up the nature of the human mind has long been neuroscience's greatest challenge - a mystery perhaps never to be fully understood. Award-winning author and master of science journalism Anil Ananthaswamy smartly explores the concept of self by way of several mental conditions that alter patients' identities, showing how we learn a lot about being human from people with a fragmented or altered sense of self. He travels the world to meet those who suffer from "maladies of the self" interviewing patients, psychiatrists, philosophers and neuroscientists along the way. He charts how the self is affected by Asperger's, autism, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, schizophrenia, among many other mental conditions, revealing how the brain constructs our sense of self. Each chapter is anchored with stories of people who experience themselves differently from the norm. The Man Who Wasn't There is a magical mystery tour of scientific analysis and philosophical pondering, now utterly transformed by recent advances in cutting-edge neuroscience. ***PRAISE FOR THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE*** 'Ananthaswamy excels at making theoretical concepts and experimental procedures both comprehensible and compelling.' Science 'If you simply want to read a great science book, I can't recommend any more highly than this one.' Forbes 'A compelling and entertaining look at the last untapped mystery, the true final frontier: the nature of our selves. Science journalism at its best.' Daniel J. Levitin, author of The Organized Mind 'An agreeably written travelogue through this mysterious landscape at the frontiers of knowledge.' The Wall Street Journal 'You'll never see yourself-or others-the same way again.' People 'Ananthaswamy's remarkable achievement is to make sense of these unhappy individuals' otherness, while holding on to their human sameness. You'll come away enlightened and chastened, asking searching questions about who you are.' Nicholas Humphrey, author of A History of the Mind 'It is an astonishing journey and an ambitious book, bringing together cutting-edge science and philosophy from West and East. You will not be quite the same self after reading it.' New Scientist

R1,390 Discovery Miles 13 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a study detailing what happens to people and what life is like in a rehabilitation program. The program discussed is embedded in an institution, called "Farewell Hospital" by the authors, that was designed to fill a demand for facilities for those judged unable to live on their own. Due to physical or mental handicaps and no family, friends, or other social agents who are willing to make a home for them outside of a public institution, these patients were placed in a rehabilitation unit.

Most patients were placed with the rehabilitation unit as a brief interlude before their permanent placement in the custodial unit of the vast institution where they would live out their lives. This work deals with the question of what happens to patients once they are rehabilitated and the non-therapeutic rules and practices of the health and welfare structure of which they are a part. In this case, the rehabilitation specialists and ward workers set themselves the task of improving the life chances of their clients by treating their ailments when possible and by improving their physical functioning so that they were better able to care for their own needs.

The authors examine the effects of the organizational relationships on rehabilitation outcomes and on the lives of the people who make hospitals their home. The text attempts to sustain feeling for the historical context of their study the "problem" of larger numbers of disabled, poverty-stricken persons, who are no longer wanted by anyone and asserts that a "solution" must be found.

The seventh edition of this volume deals with the head and the spinal column and has been expanded with the inclusion of new diagrams and text dealing in particular with: The role of the femurs during the different stages of labour The concepts of mass, weight and barycentre How to localise the barycentres Joint hypermobility The law of parsimony and the law of universal profusion This book is intended for medical and physical therapy students; and for practising physicians and surgeons wishing to increase their knowledge of the functional anatomy of the locomotor system.

Enabling Independence - A Guide for Rehabilitation Workers (Paperback): H Mackey Enabling Independence - A Guide for Rehabilitation Workers (Paperback)
H Mackey
R1,369 Discovery Miles 13 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is designed as a companion text for the variety of support workers in the field of rehabilitation. It recognises the diversity of roles and array of training and education options; formal routes such as S/NVQ and schemes which are tailored to an individual workplace. Therefore the focus of the book is simply to provide an accessible introduction to rehabilitating the patient, no matter what discipline or service leads this activity.

"Enabling Independence" provides practical information by reflecting different approaches to assisting with rehabilitation. The first section introduces the framework for the book and considers the philosophy of enablement. The second section is dedicated to 'enhancing function' and details the most common activities of daily living, such as mobility and dressing. This is followed by a 'problem oriented approach' in the third section, which addresses typical problems which support workers are likely to encounter, such as patients who fall or experience fatigue. The final section considers issues in delivering the rehabilitation support, such as team working and supporting carers.

Kimitaka Kaga
R2,900 Discovery Miles 29 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many congenitally deaf infants and children suffer vestibular failure, which produces problems with their postural control, locomotion and gait. However it is known that these children can eventually catch up with their normal balance control status in terms of development and growth as a result of central vestibular compensation. In "Vertigo and Balance Disorders in Children" the author provides comprehensive and integrative information on the vestibular system. The materials presented range from the history of its study, basic anatomy and physiology of vestibular organs, mechanism of balance and motor function development, to clinical aspects of vestibular disorders including their evaluation and pediatric neurology. Although there have been books discussing postural responses of infants and children with vestibular disorders, this is the first to present the influence of peripheral vestibular disorders and central vestibular compensation comprehensively. This book will benefit not only practitioners in this field such as pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatricians, child neurologists and neurologists, but also clinical specialists such as neonatologists, physical therapists and speech therapists, helping them to better care for patients with vestibular failure.

R4,771 Discovery Miles 47 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Emotions, behaviors, thoughts, creations, planning, daily physical activities, and routines are programmed within our brains. To acquire these capacities, the brain takes time to fully develop--a process that may take the first 20 years of life. Disruptions of the brain involving neurons, axons, dendrites, synapses, neurotransmitters or brain infrastructure produce profound changes in development and functions of the one organ that makes us unique. To understand the functions and development of the brain is difficult enough, but to reverse the consequences of trauma and repair the damage is even more challenging. To meet this challenge and increase understanding, a host of disciplines working and communicating together are required.
The International Association for the Study of Traumatic Brain Injury tried to correct this limitation during its meetings of international clinicians, researchers, and scientists from many fields. It was felt that many of the outstanding thoughts and ideas from the participants' most recent meeting and from others working in the field of traumatic brain injury (TBI) should be shared. This book was conceived not as proceedings of the conference, but as a collection of knowledge for those working in the acute and chronic recovery aspects of head injury.
This book reflects the importance of the team approach to patients with TBI. The chapter authors come from a diverse array of disciplines--basic science, neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, psychology, neuropsychology, and legal, consumer, and speech/language science. Their contributions provide the most current research and the latest ways of managing a variety of aspects of TBI.

Exercise and Heart Failure - American Heart Association - Fighting Heart Disease and Stroke (Hardcover): GJ Balady Exercise and Heart Failure - American Heart Association - Fighting Heart Disease and Stroke (Hardcover)
GJ Balady
R3,262 Discovery Miles 32 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Exercise testing has become an integral component of the management of patients with chronic heart failure. Exercise and heart failure can be seen to have a dynamic interrelationship, in which exercise can provide important diagnostic information, yet can also be used to assess the effectiveness of treatment regimes, and as a therapeutic intervention in itself. This is the first book that directly and comprehensively addresses the issues involving exercise patients with heart failure and heart transplants. It presents a unique and comprehensive overview of epidemiological, physiological and clinical aspects of this relationship. The text covers the physiology of myocardial dysfunction, the transplanted heart, and ventricular assist devices as they affect exercise capacity and responses during exercise and exertion. It goes on to discuss in more depth the exercise testing of patients, including the methods and utility of ventilatory gas analysis, the physiologic and clinical effects of exercise training on these patients, and ecommended exercise training programs This text, part of the American Heart Association Monograph Series, provides a cogent and comprehensive overview of its topic that should be of practical value to a broad range of physicians, exercise physiologists and consultants working in this field.

Cognitive Rehabilitation in Dementia - A Special Issue of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation (Hardcover): Linda Clare, Robert T.... Cognitive Rehabilitation in Dementia - A Special Issue of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation (Hardcover)
Linda Clare, Robert T. Woods
R4,092 Discovery Miles 40 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The relevance of cognitive rehabilitation for people with dementia is becoming increasingly accepted by researchers and practitioners in the field. This special issue draws together examples of state-of-the-art research and systematic review by experts in this exciting and growing area.
The contributors show how cognitive rehabilitation approaches can be applied, in different ways, to help optimise functioning and address specific difficulties across the full spectrum of severity. While the main focus is on the more commonly diagnosed forms of dementia, treatment possibilities for people with fronto-temporal dementia are also explored. Cognitive rehabilitation interventions need to be grounded in a clear assessment of the profile of strengths and limitations in cognitive functioning, and to demonstrate where possible that treatment effects extend beyond improvement on target measures to have a meaningful impact on wellbeing and quality of life. For this reason, the special issue includes contributions that explore detailed aspects of cognitive functioning or describe new developments in evaluating quality of life in dementia. Cognitive rehabilitation, it is suggested, should be viewed as one important component of a holistic approach to helping people with dementia, their families, and those who care for them. This special issue seeks both to provide information about what has already been achieved and to encourage and stimulate further progress.

Die neurologisch-neurochirurgische Frührehabilitation (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Jens Dieter Rollnik Die neurologisch-neurochirurgische Frührehabilitation (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Jens Dieter Rollnik
R2,602 Discovery Miles 26 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Invisible Brain Injury recounts, in her own words, the experience of Aurora Lassaletta, a clinical psychologist who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) after a traffic accident. Presenting her unique dual perspective as both a patient and a clinician, Aurora highlights the less visible cognitive, emotional and behavioural symptoms common to acquired brain injury (ABI). This moving account showcases Aurora's growing awareness of her impairments, their manifestation in daily life, how they are perceived, or not, by others and the tools that helped her survive. Each chapter combines Aurora's perspective with the scientific view of a professional neuropsychologist or physiatrist who provide commentaries on her various symptoms. This book is valuable reading for professionals involved in neurorehabilitation and clinical neuropsychology and for clinical psychology students. It is a must read for ABI survivors, those around them and clinicians, who are all an essential part of the rehabilitation, adjustment and acceptance process involved with ABI.
