Religion as a Public Good - Jews and Other Americans on Religion in the Public Square (Hardcover, New): Alan Mittleman Religion as a Public Good - Jews and Other Americans on Religion in the Public Square (Hardcover, New)
Alan Mittleman; Contributions by Michael Broyde, Erwin Chemerinsky, Marc Dollinger, Elliot N Dorff, …
R4,688 Discovery Miles 46 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Religion as a Public Good: Jews and Other Americans on Religion in the Public Square explores the often controversial topic of how religion ought to relate to American public life. The sixteen distinguished contributors, both Jewish and Christian, reflect on the topic out of their own disciplines-social ethics, political theory, philosophy, law, history, theology, and sociology. and take a stand based on their religious convictions and political beliefs. The volume is at once scholarly and committed, polemic and civil, reflective and activist. Written in the shadow of 9/11, it invites a new consideration of how religion enhances democratic public life with full awareness of the dangers that religion can sometimes pose. The volume is polemical, as befits the topic, but also civil, as befits a dialogue about an issue of profound significance for democratic citizenship.

Sexuality and the World's Religions (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): David Wayne Machacek, Melissa M. Wilcox Sexuality and the World's Religions (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
David Wayne Machacek, Melissa M. Wilcox
R3,179 Discovery Miles 31 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Exploring one of the most controversial topics in contemporary theology, this scholarly volume reveals what the world's great faiths—East and West—preach about sexuality, with a special emphasis on American religion. What do the world's most important religious texts have to say about one of humanity's favorite activities? Editors David W. Machacek and Melissa M. Wilcox have brought together top scholars in the field of religious studies to ask and answer these critical questions. Carefully researched, elegantly written, and respectfully presented, Sexuality and the World's Religions explores the intersection of the spiritual and the carnal in Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Daoism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and African and Native American spiritual traditions. A separate section explores critical religious and sexual topics in American society, including the role of spirituality in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities; the role of sex in the modern witchcraft community; and the ever thorny problem of religion and sexual liberty. Reconciling sexuality and spirituality in every human soul is one of religion's most important tasks. Students and other readers will find this timely and comprehensive volume of interest in exploring these issues.

Without Benefit of Clergy - Women and the Pastoral Relationship in Nineteenth-Century American Culture (Hardcover, New): Karin... Without Benefit of Clergy - Women and the Pastoral Relationship in Nineteenth-Century American Culture (Hardcover, New)
Karin E. Gedge
R2,095 Discovery Miles 20 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The common view of the nineteenth-century pastoral relationship - found in both contemporary popular accounts and 20th-century scholarship - was that women and clergymen formed a natural alliance and enjoyed a particular influence over each other. In Without Benefit of Clergy, Karin Gedge tests this thesis by examining the pastoral relationship from the perspective of the minister, the female parishioner, and the larger culture. The question that troubled religious women seeking counsel, says Gedge, was: would their minister respect them, help them, honor them? Surprisingly, she finds, the answer was frequently negative. Gedge supports her conclusion with evidence from a wide range of previously untapped primary sources including pastoral manuals, seminary students' and pastors' journals, women's diaries and letters, pamphlets, sentimental and sensational novels, and The Scarlet Letter. She moves from male seminary training to the failures of male pastoral "counseling," to more serious difficulties between ministers and their female congregants - difficulties strikingly illuminated by the literature surrounding criminal trials of ministers accused of abusing both their pastoral office and individual women. Dissatisfied with the professional ministry, Gedge shows, women ended up turning to family, friends, and published tracts for pastoral care.

Road of the Heart's Desire - An Essay on the Cycles of Story and Song (Hardcover): John S Dunne Road of the Heart's Desire - An Essay on the Cycles of Story and Song (Hardcover)
John S Dunne
R2,955 Discovery Miles 29 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"John Dunne has been pursuing human wholeness through the course of his many books. His insights into our completeness come out of his unique journey leading to the healing of his own separations: from the paths not taken earlier in life that return to join the one consciously chosen; from his relationships with others, leading to his meeting other people where we are most alone; and, ultimately, from his discovery of God's presence in his own experience of longing." -Carol Ochs, Hebrew Union College "The old master has been at work again! John Dunne provides a rare combination of the poignantly personal with the utterly universal, a work of intense thought and reflection that erupts into song, a book that like a good friend pauses and responds to your questions about the life of the spirit as it pauses and responds to John Dunne's own doubts and difficulties and desires." -John T. Noonan, author of The Lustre of Our Country "Dunne is one of our finest writers of spiritual literature. His intellectual breadth alone marks his work as significant. His poetic style prompts slow and careful reading. . . . John Dunne offers nourishment to which we can return often." -Denise Carmody, Santa Clara University

Between Eden and Armageddon - The Future of World Religions, Violence, and Peacemaking (Paperback, New Ed): Marc Gopin Between Eden and Armageddon - The Future of World Religions, Violence, and Peacemaking (Paperback, New Ed)
Marc Gopin
R2,705 Discovery Miles 27 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Much has been written on the relationship between violence and religious militancy, but there has been less research on constructive methods of confronting religious violence. This book represents an innovative attempt to integrate the study of religion with the study of conflict resolution. Marc Gopin offers an analysis of contemporary religious violence as a reaction to the pressures of modernity and the increasing economic integration of the world. He contends that religion is one of the most salient phenomena that will cause massive violence in the next century. He also argues, however, that religion can play a critical role in constructing a global community of shared moral commitments and vision - a community that can limit conflict to its nonviolent, constructive variety.

The Continuing Challenge of AIDS - Clergy Responses to Patients, Friends, and Families (Hardcover): Robert E. Beckley, Jerome... The Continuing Challenge of AIDS - Clergy Responses to Patients, Friends, and Families (Hardcover)
Robert E. Beckley, Jerome R. Koch
R2,858 Discovery Miles 28 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the AIDS crisis spread and gained momentum, Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish clergy in the United States and the United Kingdom became involved in sometimes surprising ways. Using quantitative and qualitative data from the early 1990s and from follow-up interviews conducted later in the decade, the authors show that many clergy became involved in the pastoral care for and counseling of people stigmatized by AIDS, including gay and bisexual men, despite expressions of antipathy from their denominations. Sociological theories concerning clergy roles, social movements, social space, and social capital provide a framework for analyzing the initial findings and the data from subsequent interviews. The study concludes that this small but dedicated group of clergy who ministered to the needs of this suffering population were part of a social movement that addressed a community problem despite both obstacles and opposition.

Using data obtained from structured interviews and responses to questionnaires concerning clergy responses to real and hypothetical situations involving people who are HIV-positive or who have AIDS, the authors illustrate how clergy and organized religious groups confronted a new and acute fatal illness that was initially associated with stigmatized behavior. They demonstrate that many clergy saw their roles as advocates for these individuals and as providers of pastoral and spiritual care, in spite of the rhetoric of conservative and fundamentalist clergy who condemned the victims as an example of the wrath of God against gay and bisexual men. The study also shows that even those who were less actively engaged in AIDS pastoral care and counseling demonstrated tolerance for those affected by it. Follow-up interviews indicate, finally, that as AIDS became more of a chronic illness, the social movement to provide religious and spiritual care and counseling began to wane.

The Courage to Lead - Leadership in the African American Urban Church (Paperback): James Henry Harris The Courage to Lead - Leadership in the African American Urban Church (Paperback)
James Henry Harris
R1,654 Discovery Miles 16 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on pastoral and lay leadership in the African American church. It deals with the internal and external issues such as the tendency toward a bifurcated mentality and practice such as the 'this is business' syndrome as well as the social issue of race and affirmative action. Ministers and laity in the black church must actively engage themselves in overcoming the inequities that are still endemic to life in urban America. Harris affirms that affirmative action policies are more important than ever in obtaining a degree of social justice.

Healing Violent Men - A Model for Christian Communities (Paperback): David J. Livingston Healing Violent Men - A Model for Christian Communities (Paperback)
David J. Livingston
R582 Discovery Miles 5 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Violence, forgiveness, and healing

Domestic violence is a widespread, though largely invisible, problem, often exacerbated by the pastoral urge to "keep the family together" at all costs. Yet if that is not a solution, how should the church relate to batterers?

"I believe that the Christian community, if it is to be genuinely a community of healing and hope, must attend to both the victims and the perpetrators of domestic violence", says David Livingston. Addressing the complex phenomenon of intimate violence against wives, lovers, and children, Livingston profiles batterers and battering and traces it to larger cultural pathologies. He explores the ambiguous role of religion and then offers practical advice of pastoral and programmatic efforts to embrace simultaneously the twin Christian imperatives of forgiveness and responsibility.

The Justice Men Owe Women - Positive Resources from World Religions (Paperback): John C. Raines The Justice Men Owe Women - Positive Resources from World Religions (Paperback)
John C. Raines
R555 Discovery Miles 5 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This, the second in the Fortress Press series of short works from the Religious Consultation on Population, Reproductive Health and Ethics, looks to ten, largely patriarchal, world religious traditions to help redress gender injustices. Built on extensive work by a task force of ten progressive religious scholars (to be published in a larger volume by Suny Press), the book summarizes their findings for intellectual enrichment and advocacy.

As we unveil the patriarchal bias that so often embeds itself in the sacred, we seek to appropriate from that heritage more positive resources. Each of the religious traditions has a strong theory of social justice, and these resources can be harnessed to contemporary issues of gender. We ask how our scriptures, our founding prophets, our ancestors can be used today to further justice in relations between the genders.

The Newer Deal - Social Work and Religion in Partnership (Paperback, New): Ram Cnaan The Newer Deal - Social Work and Religion in Partnership (Paperback, New)
Ram Cnaan; As told to Robert Wineburg, Stephanie Boddie
R1,583 Discovery Miles 15 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the federal system of entitlements and social services long provided by New Deal--era programs is dismantled and shifted to the states, the religious community finds itself relied upon more than ever to assist with social services for the needy.

"The Newer Deal" calls upon religious-based organizations and the social work--social service community to put aside their differences and forge a "limited partnership" to provide the social and welfare services that millions depend on. The proposed partnership focuses on joint care for those in need -- with attention to services for people of color, gays and lesbians, women, and programs for community empowerment and economic development -- while maintaining the values and other interests each partner traditionally holds.

The authors discuss different types of religious-based social services and draw on case examples and research findings to show how the religious community's role in providing social services is stronger than ever. They examine the relationship between the religious and the social work--social service communities, as well as the issues that have divided the two, and explain the ways in which concern for the poor is integral to the major faith groups.

Civility (Paperback, New edition): Leroy S. Rouner Civility (Paperback, New edition)
Leroy S. Rouner
R1,141 Discovery Miles 11 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Are Americans less civil than they used to be? If so, is that a bad thing? Perhaps we are just learning to be more honest. And what does civility mean? Is it just good manners? It so, perhaps it is only the complaint of privileged classes, annoyed that taxi drivers are increasingly rude and that men no longer give up their seats to women on public transportation. Or is civility a question of morality? The philosopher Peter Bertocci once argued that promptness is a fundamental form of social justice. In this lively conversation on an increasingly significant theme, major philosophers and religious scholars argue the issue on three levels. The first is manners: Henry Rosemont argues the Confucian case that manners are the substance of social relations, while Edwin Delattre and Adam Seligman believe that the issue is deeper than that; and the sociologist Alan Wolfe is persuaded that we are not less civil or ill-mannered than our predecessors. Secondly, as a social issue, James Schmidt, Lawrence Cahoone, and Adam Seligman turn to questions of structure and meaning in a civil society; Ninian Smart, David Wong, and Virginia Straus put the issue in a cross-cultural context; and Carrie Doehring warns that civility may be a barrier to honest Communication in family life. Finally, the metaphysical and religious dimensions of civility are explored by Robert Pippin and Adam McClellan. There seems to be a consensus that the lack of civility is, indeed, an increasing problem, that it is more than a class issue of manners, and that its current loss is troubling for contemporary society.

Howard Eilberg-Schwartz, Wendy Doniger
R1,039 Discovery Miles 10 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Whereas many books look at how women's "bodies" are represented in different religions and cultures around the world, this work explores the site of a woman's voice and identity, her "head," The female head threatens to disrupt the classic gender distinctions that link men to speech, identity, and mind while relegating women to silence, anonymity, and flesh. The contributors to this collection argue that the objectification of women as sexual and reproductive bodies results in their symbolic beheading. Decapitation occurs symbolically in myths as well as in actual practices such as veiling, head covering, and cosmetic highlighting, which by sexualizing a woman's face turns it into an extension of her body.
The essays explore how similar treatments of the female head find their unique articulation in diverse religious traditions and cultures: in Hindu myths of beheading, in Buddhist and Tantric practices and poetry about the hair of female nuns, in the resistance to veiling by early Christian women at Corinth, in contemporary veiling practices in a Turkish village, in the eroticization of the female mouth in ancient Judaism, and in Greek and Roman cosmetic practices.
Together these essays show how the depiction of the female head is critical for an understanding of gender and its influence on other fundamental religious and cultural issues.

Religion and Recovery from PTSD (Paperback): Harold Koenig, Donna Ames, Michelle Pearce Religion and Recovery from PTSD (Paperback)
Harold Koenig, Donna Ames, Michelle Pearce; Foreword by William Nash
R737 Discovery Miles 7 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume focuses on the role that religion and spirituality can play in recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other forms of trauma, including moral injury. Religious texts, from the Bible to Buddhist scriptures, have always contained passages that focus on helping those who have experienced the trauma of war. Many religions have developed psychological, social, behavioral, and spiritual ways of coping and healing that can work in tandem with clinical treatments today in assisting recovery from PTSD and moral injury. In this book the authors review and discuss systematic research into how religion helps people cope with severe trauma, including trauma caused by natural disasters, intentional interpersonal violence, or combat experiences during war. They delve into the impact that spirituality has in both the development of and recovery from PTSD. Beyond reviewing research, they also use case vignettes throughout to illustrate the very human story of recovery from PTSD, and how religious or spiritual beliefs can both help or hinder depending on circumstance. A vital work for any mental health or religious professionals who seek to help people dealing with severe trauma and loss.

The chapters offer insight to the healing role spirituality and prayer can play when counselling for trauma, sexual abuse or loss of a loved one.
