Magic of Impromptu Speaking is a comprehensive, step-by-step system for creating highly effective speeches in under 30 seconds. It is based on research of the most powerful techniques used by winners of impromptu speaking contests, politicians, actors and successful presenters. The book is entertaining to read, has plenty of examples and covers the most effective tools not only from the world of impromptu speaking but also from acting, stand-up comedy, applied psychology and creative thinking. Once you master the system, you will grow immensely as an impromptu public speaker, become a better storyteller in a circle of friends and be more creative in everyday life. Your audience members will think that what you do on stage after such short preparation is pure magic and will recall some of your speeches many years later.
AS A TEACHER and also an examiner and adjudicator in the exciting realm of Speech and Drama, author Eleanor McLeod is all too aware of how difficult it is to find original and appealing scenes for young performers. This collection of monologues is based on characters from familiar fairy stories, many by Hans Anderson and The Brothers Grimm, where the author has taken a slightly different slant, often to modernise the characters and add a touch of humour. So, we have the Mother Bear who is all too aware of compensation culture, or Red Riding Hood's Grandma being hounded by the press Others are more traditional. All of them have already been performed by keen young actors and actresses so we have already seen how they translate into entertaining and captivating performances. Watch out for Vol II 'Duologues' coming soon..
"How to Deliver a Great TED talk" is a complete public speaking
system for delivering highly effective presentations and speeches.
Do you envy speakers who are entertaining? Have you noticed they are admired, sought-after and successful? But are you daunted by the challenge of becoming an entertaining speaker? Perhaps you want to improve but don't know how or don't know where to turn. This could be the book for you. The author, Dr Ray Lowry, has enjoyed a successful career as an academic, public health doctor and dentist and made a name for himself as an entertaining speaker (not surprising as he started life as a comedy writer and performer). He developed coaching to help colleagues become competent, engaging and entertaining speakers. This book crystallises these techniques and will help business people, academics, teachers and amateur speech-makers (even budding stand-up comics) develop their platform skills. As Ray says: "I wish there had been someone like me or the service I offer when I was starting out. I used to envy speakers who were entertaining. And I noticed they were admired, sought-after and successful. But I was daunted by the challenge; terrified sometimes. I didn't know what to do or how to do it. So I set out to find the secrets and see if I could become an entertaining speaker. And I did, as my engagement's diary now shows. I am in demand at conferences, at business meetings, as an after-dinner speaker (and I even do pure stand-up comedy from time to time). Now I've written the book that can help others master the techniques. Before you start becoming an entertaining speaker, you need to be a competent one. So this book contains a lot of detail about that - what it takes to be competent as a presenter even before you stretch yourself in the direction of entertainment. So please don't skip the detail, even though much of it may be old hat to many of you. And by improving your competence as a speaker you will become more entertaining anyway. Competence and entertainment go hand-in-hand in the public speaking business because the customers (your audience) expect it. But who am I to teach you how to become an entertaining speaker? Firstly, I have writing credentials. I have written professional comedy for radio and television and for newspapers and magazines . I have published over 50 straight articles in peer-review professional journals. I also have performing experience. I have appeared on television and radio (straight and comedy) as a chat-show host, interviewer, anchor and presenter. On stage I have done professional and amateur stand-up comedy, revue, pantomime and straight plays. I have spent many years on the professional platform at conferences, in the classroom and in seminars and workshops. My teaching/coaching skills have been refined over the years. I was training programme director for public health in the Northern Health Region for three years (using innovative coaching methods to improve the writing and performance skills of trainees and trainers). My methods feature interactive learning and coaching using actors and audio-visual facilities. I was a senior lecturer at a university for many years teaching, tutoring and mentoring undergraduates and postgraduates and I'm an experienced researcher." Being an entertaining speaker takes you to a higher plane as a presenter. You can expect to rise above the crowd, to stand out from your colleagues and competitors, and to get many advantages. But it doesn't come easy. It takes work and there are risks. Others may be jealous, you will have to step outside your comfort zone (for example learn new things, be less inhibited, seek out help and support) and you will certainly take risks. This book can help you entertain guests at parties or dinners; inject some humour into your speeches or presentations; interest your customers; break into the public speaking business; or try your hand at stand-up comedy.

The study of health information seeking has become increasingly important in recent years due to the growing emphasis on the consumer/client relationship in the health arena. This trend implies a shift away from the development of health campaigns with one unitary message to a recognition that alternatives must be provided and options discussed. Indeed, health agencies are adopting the role of information-seeking facilitators through the creation of telephone services and sophisticated databases. A greater understanding of the public's needs, especially why people seek information, may help us to accomplish the many behavioral changes that will lead toward decreases in morbidity and mortality and a more balanced approach to wellness and prevention. This is especially important in the context of the revolution in access to information brought about by the many recent advances in databases and telecommunication systems, perhaps best represented by the advent of the Internet. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of these issues appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practitioners, and researchers.

Most of us are average in many things because we have picked up our knowledge as we went along and have never studied fundamentals. This applies to sports as much as to public speaking. For example, one of my colleagues was a very fine tennis player. He became a National Champion and participated in many international matches. Why is it that to-day, although he hardly plays at all, he can take on most club players who have taught themselves, and usually beat them? His answer is, "Once you know the fundamentals of each stroke you may lose a game but you will never play really badly." If you apply the lessons taught in this book you will become a good conversationalist, which means that you will be able to speak well in public. Any worries regarding your voice will largely disappear, and you won't be frightened to talk to a gathering of people, however large it may be. A little nervous, yes. But that's good for you. Some people call that excitement (and it can disappear almost at will), but you will never be scared of it
