Selective mutism in children is characterized by persistent refusal
to speak in one or more social situations (e.g., at school or among
strangers), notwithstanding the demonstrated ability to use
language at home. The range of treatment options has recently
expanded to include promising behavioral, psychopharmacological,
and multi-modal approaches in addition to psychodynamic and family
systems therapy. Toward overcoming the traditional intractability
of the disorder, the authors exhort clinicians - psychologists,
psychiatrists, pediatricians, counselors, social workers - to
familiarize themselves with all of the options in order to expand
their repertoires and individualize treatment strategies.
Comprehensive in scope, this book presents the major therapeutic
approaches and offers alternatives to professionals working with
selectively mute children. A Jason Aronson Book
Meet Harry - a young boy who stammers. Harry invites readers to
learn about what it is like to stammer from his perspective and how
it affects his daily life and makes him feel. He talks about
techniques that can help reduce stammering and describes how
friends, family and others can help him to feel at ease and reduce
his stammer further. This illustrated book is full of useful
information and will be an ideal introduction for young people,
aged 7 upwards, as well as parents, friends, teachers and speech
therapists working with children who stammer. It is also an
excellent starting point for group discussions at home or school.
Designed to help those studying speech-language pathology, this

pathology curricula but which feature increasingly in clinical
caseloads. The book features: * 330 short-answer questions to help
students to develop knowledge of the causes and features of
communication disorders * 60 data analysis exercises to give
students practice in analysing clinical linguistic data * Full
answers to the exercises, saving the lecturer time in devising
responses, and allowing students to use the responses to test their
own knowledge and understanding * A detailed glossary of terms,
avoiding the need to consult other sources for explanations and
making the text self-contained * Suggestions for further reading
for each chapter.

This updated second edition of Cochlear Implant Patient Assessment
is an instrumental reference for clinicians working with cochlear
implant recipients and graduate students in the fields of
speech-language pathology and audiology. The content of the text is
logically organized, and begins with necessary background
information for cochlear implant candidacy and the selection
process. Later chapters provide information on assessment of
implant candidacy, postoperative assessment of performance over the

A powerful guide to the primary diagnosis of disorders of the
external auditory canal, tympanic membrane, middle ear, temporal
bone, and skull base Despite the many advances in diagnostic
technologies and imaging modalities in recent years, otoscopy
remains the first diagnostic option in the diagnosis of otologic
disease. This is an easy-to-consult book for residents and
specialists, featuring brilliant diagnostic images from the newest
generation of endoscopic otoscopes. Written by a renowned team of
experts with 30 years of experience, this book helps readers obtain
proficiency in otoscopy and in the interpretation of findings.
Readers will learn what clinical consequences the diagnoses may
have through case examples and treatment suggestions. Key Features:
Richly illustrated with over 1000 mostly full-color photographs and
many radiological studies Shows a vast range of common and rare
pathologies that can be visualized and assessed via endo-otoscopy
Juxtaposes, when appropriate, the clinical picture, radiological
diagnosis, and intraoperative findings with the endo-otoscopic
findings of the patient In each chapter, a surgical summary lists
various approaches that may be used to optimally plan treatment of
the patient A special final chapter covers the assessment of
postsurgical findings as seen in otoscopy, so as to distinguish
between normal healing and changes that may require further
intervention Color Atlas of Endo-Otoscopy, produced with the
support of Mario Sanna Foundation, is certain to become a valuable

Many school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) deal with
large caseloads and limited resources. Taking on additional
workload by implementing multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) can
seem overwhelming. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support: Implementation
Tools for Speech-Language Pathologists in Education offers
practical research-based tools for how school-based SLPs can
balance the high demands of their job with supporting general
education students. This professional resource provides answers to
a range of questions about policy implications, applicability of
the framework to a speech-language pathologist's role in schools,
and how an SLP can implement MTSS in their practice. Part I breaks
down the important concepts of MTSS, while Part II is designed as
an SLP MTSS Toolkit, featuring the collective wisdom of
practitioners and researchers in the field. Throughout the text,
readers will also find real-world snapshots of MTSS in action based
on the experiences of actual SLPs in the field. In addition, the
appendices are filled with forms and templates for use in
educational and clinical settings. Readers will also have access to
a PluralPlus companion website with downloadable versions of the
resources from the book.

Family caregivers are those who provide continuous, unpaid care to
family members and friends who are unable to care for themselves.
Caregivers can be trained by speech-language pathologists and
audiologist to augment goals established to remediate communication
disorders and can be instrumental in motivating clients to complete
a program of therapy. However, family caregivers are themselves
vulnerable to a number of debilitating conditions as a result of
the physical and emotional toll that daily caregiving can take. The
stressors are well documented, including the development of chronic
diseases, premature death, fatigue, and depression. In addition,
caregivers and their coping styles differ according to cultural
expectations, and these differences are described in detail here.
The book also includes information on caregiver resources that
specialize in support areas such as transportation to and from the
clinic, financial literacy, respite care, meals, end of life care,
advance directives, and home health services. It is a much needed
resource for clinicians who provide education and counseling to
adult patients and their families.
Professional Competencies in Speech-Language Pathology and
Audiology is designed for the professional issues course at the
graduate level in a speech-language pathology or audiology program.
ASHA recently updated the curriculum standards for master's level
programs to include a list of professional competencies,
identifying a need for direct instruction in professional
competencies for SLP students. The purpose of this text will be to
provide that direct instruction in professional competency and
soft-skills. Topics such as cultural competence, professional
duties, collaborative practices clinical reasoning and
evidence-based practices, and effective communication skills will
be covered. Many chapters in this textbook will be co-authored by
non-SLPs who have extensive knowledge in the topic area. By pairing
the expertise of individuals outside of SLPs with the author,
professional competencies can be taught in-depth and applied to
clinical cases and situations. This textbook will employ a Theory
to Practice approach through examples, practice, and application as
follows: * Theoretical concepts will be presented * Theoretical
concepts will be applied to the field by the author through
examples * Readers will then be given an opportunity to apply
theories to provided case studies * Suggestions for application in
current settings will be given and questions for reflection will be
provided
