The ability to communicate is amazing. No other human ability is
so complicated, so sophisticated, so important to civilization-and
yet so taken for granted. How tragic would life be without the
marvelous ability to communicate? In "Simply Amazing: Communication
Sciences and Disorders," Dr. Dennis C. Tanner explores the stages
of the communication chain and examines the act of speech
communication from the speaker's thoughts to the listener's
understanding of them.
Relying on more than forty years of experience studying,
teaching, researching, and providing clinical services in the
communication sciences discipline, Tanner provides a frank and
informative discussion about the subject, including both
conventional and offbeat theories of human communication, unique
and sometimes bizarre disorders, and intriguing patients.
Through anecdotes, examples, illustrations, case studies, and
personal asides of the amazing human ability to communicate-as well
as the myriad disorders, defects, delays, and disabilities that can
lay waste to it-"Simply Amazing: Communication Sciences and
Disorders" provides keen insight into the world of
communication.

treatments that deliver real relief from tinnitus. This relatively
short guide reveals the latest developments and technology that
delivers real results. This brief guide was born out of the
personal and clinical experiences of the author, having used the
methods outlined for many years with his own patients, especially
the newer technology. It is not acceptable any more for people who

The goal of this book is to fill a gap that currently exists
between the theoretical learning that takes place in the university
setting, and practical management of clients in the workplace.
Dysphagia is becoming an increasingly large part of the work done
by Speech Language Pathologists but seems to be very confronting
for a lot of students and beginning clinicians. We wanted to
provide a resource that helps to bridge the gaps between
theoretical learning and hands-on practice and provide a resource
that unpacks clinical reasoning and helps new clinicians think
about how and why recommendations about managing clients with
dysphagia are made. Dysphagia management is definitely no cookbook
recipe field, and whilst this is part of its attraction, it can
also cause sheer terror in new graduates. Let's use an analogy.
Each patient is like a unique symphony. At university or college we
are taught about one or two instruments in the symphony. In
clinical practice it can feel like there is a cacophony of noise
that we have to make sense of. We can feel overwhelmed by other
sounds and it can feel like they are drowning out the one or two
instruments that we have learned. With some help interpreting the
other instruments that give that symphony its rich texture, we can
start to relax and appreciate the individuality of each piece. We
are practising clinicians who are also involved in research. This
book reflects an evidence-based approach to management of clients
with dysphagia, while providing tips that reflect our extensive
experience in managing feeding and swallowing problems in adult and
pediatric populations. We hope it will encourage new clinicians to
learn to ask the questions that will assist them in individualizing
assessment and treatment for their patients. It has been our
experience that students learn about different aspects of dysphagia
and its management in the university setting, then arrive for
clinical practicum with no idea of how the pieces of the puzzle fit
together: for example, WHY a facial nerve weakness will mean that
the person with dysphagia is likely to struggle to drink without
anterior spillage, or the need for strategies to manage drooling.
This book uses a series of case studies to help demonstrate how the
pieces of the puzzle fit together. Dysphagia requires you, the
clinician, to multi-task your anatomy and physiology university
knowledge with the individual needs of the person sitting in front
of you. This type of task requires the ability to draw on multiple
sources. This book is a companion that will show you strategies for
how to apply that knowledge and how to listen to the patient's
symphony so that you get a feel for the rich texture of dysphagia
in practice. This book is different from other dysphagia textbooks
in another significant way. We wanted to use visual maps to help
you recognize the many facets you need to consider when working
with a person with swallowing difficulties. This strategy uses
metacognition to help you become lifelong learners. Many of us have
a preference for visual learning and we aim to tap into this
preference. We also wanted to make this a user-friendly book, so
we've coded the different sections using symbols to help guide you
to the bits you need quickly. In short, we wanted to write the book
that WE wished we had when we started our journey learning about
dysphagia We hope that this will be a book that you reach for as a
student and beginning clinician when you need information about
managing a population. If this is a book that falls apart from
constant use, we will have achieved what we set out to do.
What we as audiologists and speech-language pathologists believe
about ourselves, others, and the world around us influences our
work at least as much as our knowledge of audiology and
communication sciences and disorders, according to speech-language
pathologist Ellen-Marie Silverman, Ph.D. A Fellow of the American
Speech-Hearing-Language Association, she believes the more clearly
we as practitioners perceive our personal core beliefs, which
reside below the level of casual awareness, the more effective we
can be meeting clients' and caregivers' concerns. In "Mind
Matters," she introduces a simple, straight-forward method for
identifying deeply held personal beliefs that, if undetected, could
repeatedly sabotage clinical relationships. Then she describes five
basic beliefs about working as a clinician that lead to highly
skilled service. Examples and anecdotes drawn from her varied and
extensive clinical and teaching experience showcase the value,
ease, and challenges of applying these helpful beliefs to daily
work in any environment. Dr. Silverman delivers this basic
information in a mentor-friendly style to all intended readers, the
student-in-training, the employed clinician, and the clinician
planning to resume a career. The practical focus with which she
addresses this rarely addressed yet critical aspect of clinical
work, i.e., detecting personal core beliefs, makes "Mind Matters" a
unique contribution to clinical preparation and development. Dr.
Silverman reminds us that the relationship we as practitioners
foster with clients and caregivers is our most important tool.
Identifying personal core beliefs which form the infrastructure for
professional relationships and selecting and cultivating beliefs
that encourage maximal growth of clinical partners contributes
greatly to experiencing a satisfying, effective, and long-lived
career. This book will occupy a central place in your professional
library. Dr. Silverman is also the author of "Mindfulness &
Stuttering: Using Eastern Strategies to Speak with Greater Ease,"
"Relief From Stuttering: Laying the Groundwork to Speak with
Greater Ease," and "Jason's Secret," a middle reader novel about a
10 year-old boy taking his first constructive steps to resolve his
stuttering problem. ***Also available as a Kindle ebook.***

When 10 million persons with Tinnitus seek relief, they may be told
that nothing can be done for it, or to use "Miracle Ear Drops."
Now, the whole person program that Murray Grossan, M.D. has used
effectively for his own patients is here. It is presented in a
manner easy to follow, just like learning a tennis serve Best of
all, you are provided with a coach, your mirror, to show you when
you do the actions right. Relief from ear ringing requires that ALL
the tinnitus factors be addressed, including full understanding
(cognition), and new brain circuits. This whole body approach
works, because when you understand WHY you do these actions, then
the mind is engaged in the therapy. Dr. Grossan has published on
Tinnitus therapy since 1970. He is board certified in Ear Nose and
Throat, (Otolaryngology), and practices at Cedars Sinai Medical in
Los Angeles. Show More Show Less
