Designed to be used either independently or alongside the 'Words Together' storybooks, Helping Children Find Their Voices is a guide for parents and practitioners supporting children in the early stages of learning to talk, specifically to understand and use two-word sentences. Written in a friendly and reassuring tone, the book untangles questions and concerns that many parents and practitioners share around language development, such as whether children are reaching important milestones, whether they benefit from screen-time and dummies, and what to do if there might be a problem. Key features of this book include: * Chapters that can either be followed consecutively, offering tips on how to encourage first words and the combining of words into two-word sentences, or dipped in-and-out of according to the individual child's level of development * Practical information and advice rooted in theory, giving parents and practitioners the confidence and background knowledge to support communication * Activities that can be integrated into everyday interactions, giving children the opportunity to hear simple sentence structures that they can progress towards in their own speech. Also available as part of a set, with four colourful picture books, this guide is an ideal resource for early years practitioners, parents, and those working with children who have delayed speech and language development.
Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder in which individuals are unable to communicate in certain environments or contexts (such as at school or in the community) despite having appropriate speech and language skills in other settings. By drawing on their extensive knowledge of language development, language complexity, and therapeutic approaches, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can provide life-changing results for children with SM. Treating Selective Mutism as a Speech-Language Pathologist is a comprehensive yet accessible resource designed to bridge the gap in the current SM literature and empower SLPs to treat this disorder effectively. This valuable professional resource has tools for SLPs at every stage of their careers, from new clinicians preparing for potential cases of SM to experienced SLPs looking to expand their knowledge base. The first three chapters of Treating Selective Mutism as a Speech-Language Pathologist offer a base of understanding by exploring the roots and characteristics of SM. The text then walks clinicians through effective assessment and diagnosis strategies. The final chapters provide evidence-based treatment strategies, as well as practical guides and activities, for supporting children with SM. Key Features: * Ready-to-use activities, handouts, and forms that can be reproduced and implemented the next day during a therapy session * Up-to-date empirical evidence regarding the etiological factors of SM * Overview of the collaborative team approach necessary for treating SM * Suggestions regarding specific assessment materials and a specific protocol to guide data collection during assessment ( Specific, evidence-based treatment strategies provided in a clear, easy-to-understand manner * A PluralPlus companion website with printable versions of the resources in the book

Each Scoring Book is a complete set of score sheets for the Comprehensive Aphasia Test bound together in a convenient booklet with intuitive layout for scoring of each sub-test. Front page features a client information sheet for easy filing, whilst a master page allows for recording re-test scores in the same place for easy comparison. Scoring Books are supplied in packs of ten. The Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT) is a test for people who have acquired aphasia and can be completed over one or two assessment sessions. The test includes a user manual, a ring-bound cognitive screen and language battery a scoring booklet, and - new to this release - a concise Aphasia Impact Questionnaire which replaces the former Disability Questionnaire. The cognitive section assesses people's abilities across a range of task that can affect rehabilitation. Forming the main body of the test, the language battery provides a profile of performance across all modalities of language production and comprehension. The Aphasia Impact Questionnaire was co-produced with people with aphasia. It is a pictorial Patient Reported Outcome Measure, which produces both qualitative and quantitative information. It supports the person with aphasia to give a subjective rating of how language difficulties identified in the Language Battery affect their daily life, enabling first steps towards goal setting. In addition, the CAT helps the therapist to track changes over the course of recovery and provides a guide to likely outcomes on the basis of an early assessment. It is supported by normative data on people both with and without aphasia, and extensive data on reliability and clinical validity. The CAT allows users to: * Identify underlying impairments * Find where to focus assessments using PALPA and other batteries * Ascertain the practical, psychological, and social impact of aphasia, from the perceptive of the person with aphasia * Create a profile of strengths and weaknesses to guide therapy. Structured around fully up-to-date models of language processing from cognitive neuropsychology this test is an indispensable resource for speech and language therapists and researchers. It provides as much information about people's language ability as possible in a relatively brief test designed to be completed in 90-120 minutes.
Many communication disorders are poorly understood and many treatments used in therapy remain unproven. Speech and Language therapists are increasingly involved in research in these areas but may lack the training and experience required to conduct it. Not the least of their problems is that few textbooks discuss the specific problems of research design in communication disorders. Research Methods in Speech and Language Therapy fills this gap. It will serve as an introductory text for students who are training to be therapists and as an introduction to more advanced methods for clinicians involved in research. Different approaches to research are described and the basic principles of research design and statistical analysis described. The book uses a wide range of published research to illustrate how research may be conducted in these areas and gives particular attention to the problems of researching the effectiveness of therapy.

Primary Progressive Aphasia and Other Frontotemporal Dementias: Diagnosis and Treatment of Associated Communication Disorders is the second volume in the "Medical Speech-Language Pathology" book series. It is intended to fill an unmet need to assist clinicians, students, and related healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of the title disorders. There is a growing population of individuals diagnosed with various forms of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), and this number is likely to increase as medical practitioners and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) become more expert at identifying these conditions. More clinicians will be seeing, and treating, patients with a diagnosis of FTD or PPA. Toward that end, the goal of this book is to expand this clinical knowledge base and support the development of skills in diagnosis, but also in clinical management. Within each chapter is a concise presentation of available evidence-based practice and research findings, with a focus on sharing information that is clinically applicable and digestible for non-researchers. Each chapter provides a comprehensive outline of testing that will assist in the diagnosis of the cognitive-communication disorders associated with FTD, PPAs, and primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS). Primary Progressive Aphasia and Other Frontotemporal Dementias is targeted toward practicing clinicians, graduate students, and clinical researchers who are interested in the latest conceptualization of FTD spectrum disorders. The intent is that this book provides clinical pearls to assist in diagnostic assessments and treatment planning. The book also comes with a PluralPlus companion website containing full color images from the text and supplementary videos.

This book describes the problems that people can experience with their voices, either by vocal misuse, psychological and physical stress, laryngeal pathologies or neurological disorders. Chapters are contributed by clinicians who have special interest and expertise in voice disorders and their management and treatment. Two strong themes are clearly identifiable in each chapter: the first is the emphasis on the physiological aspects of phonatory dysfunction, and the second is the recognition that vocal impairments can have significant social and psychosocial consequences. Many of the contributors have also addressed issues such as evidence--based practice, efficacy and the outcomes of intervention. With each new edition of this book, the chapters have grown larger. Most original chapters have been rewritten or substantially updated, and several new chapters have been added by expert practitioners in the US, the UK and Australia. The editors have produced a balanced volume which will continue to be a useful reference text for all those practitioners and students who are involved in voice care.
Covering the field of clinical phonetics and linguistics, this work covers such areas as phonological issues in normal and defective development; aphasia, dysfasia, dysartlia, apraxia of speech and neurological conditions; and critical evaluations of methods in clinical assessments, acoustic and psychological measurements for the differential diagnosis of (motor) speech disorders. Particular emphasis is put on hearing and central auditory processing disorders, including their consequences for language and speech, and for the study of the relation between psycholinguistic input and output processes.
"Medical Speech-Language Pathology: A Desk Reference, Fourth Edition'' is an easily accessible quick reference that details procedures, practices and terminology aimed specifically at the needs of the medically based speech-language pathologist. The purpose of this text is to advance the practices of SLP clinicians and help them to become comfortable with the principles and practices found in hospitals and related settings so they can practice their profession and take their place among other health care providers with confidence and competence. Key Features: *Find what you need quickly with concise, comprehensive definitions that are practical and well-organized. *Includes information related to working with children and newborns in almost every chapter. *Reinforce skills related to career development with the Clinical Competencies discussed at the end of each chapter. In medical settings, the speech-language pathologist's treatment decisions may directly affect health and safety as well as communication; thus, clinicians who work in medical settings should have a basic understanding of the conditions that bring patients to the hospital or clinic and what is being done to manage them. This text is intended to provide that basic understanding as a handy reference for clinicians who are practicing or are in training to practice speech-language pathology in hospitals and in other health care-related facilities, such as rehabilitation programs, private practice, outpatient clinics, nursing homes, and home health agencies. It is also intended as a desk reference for clinicians who work in school and preschool settings, where children with medically related communication and swallowing disorders are a part of the caseload.
This book brings together a selection of papers from those presented at the Fourth International Conference of the British Dyslexia Association in April 1997. The three main themes of the conference are biology, identification and intervention.
Now published in a fully revised and updated second edition, this is an integrated and practical text for the student or the practising therapist. The authors take account of current models of language development and show the influence of these themes in relation to developmental language disorders. They also discuss current research into infant skills and emergent language and its influence on the early identification of language disorders. Drawing on their clinical experience, the authors consider at a practical level the role of the speech therapist/pathologist in the education of language handicapped children, the problems faced by speech therapists/pathologists in this area, and the strategies for intervention and management.
The functional approach to the treatment of aphasia is embodied in the methods and techniques of Promoting Aphasic's Communicative Effectiveness (PACE), which has had an international influence on the way therapists approach the rehabilitation of aphasia patients. However, there is a shortage of research into the approach and little up-to-date practical guidance on its application. D. Carlomagno's concise book aims to provide a guide to the use and efficacy of PACE methodology which should be useful for aphasia therapists. |
