Children with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and Communication Problems - There is Always a Reason (Paperback,... Children with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and Communication Problems - There is Always a Reason (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed)
Melanie Cross
R787 Discovery Miles 7 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Children and young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) are far more likely to have communication problems than their peers, yet these problems are under-recognised, under-researched, and most importantly, often unaddressed. Melanie Cross considers the reasons why behavioural and communication difficulties so often occur together, and examines the social, educational and mental health implications of this. She shows that improving the communication skills of children and young people with SEBD can contribute to better outcomes, and that speech and language therapy is an important, yet often absent, service for this group. She provides practical guidelines for assessing communication, as well as useful strategies to help children and young people with SEBD to develop their communication skills. This second edition also contains information on unidentified and unmet communication needs in vulnerable young people, including young offenders and those at risk of social exclusion. This book will be an invaluable resource for speech and language therapists, social workers, teachers and other professionals working with children with emotional, behavioural and communication difficulties.

Jennifer A. Ostergren
R2,695 Discovery Miles 26 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury: A Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists is designed for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) treating adults with cognitive-communicative impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI has received recent attention, due to an increase in the number of individuals with TBI, but also given concerns over long-term complications associated with TBI, such as concussion in sports. Cognitive impairments are one of the cardinal features of TBI, affecting communication and activities of daily living. Increasingly, SLPs are required to provide services to individuals with TBI. This book integrates scientific information into a user friendly and practical application tool as a starting point for practicing SLPs.Section I contains chapters that serve as background for understanding the treatment of individuals with TBI. Included are chapters addressing the nature of injury and recovery of TBI, and chapters on broader topics such as medical management and service delivery principles. An overview of cognitive-communicative impairments is also included, as are sections devoted to compounding conditions such as speech, language, voice, swallowing, hearing/balance, and emotional/behavioral issues. Section II contains chapters devoted to the treatment of TBI and cognitive-communicative impairments. Each chapter focuses on a treatment approach shown to have an established base of evidence to support its effective use. Chapters in Section II are formatted similarly, with an introduction to a treatment approach, followed by details and clinically useable information, such as recommended candidates, treatment procedures, ways to individualize the approach, and data collection techniques. Each chapter ends with a case study providing an example of treatment implementation. The associated PluralPlus companion website contains modifiable forms and materials for use in implementing the approaches (e.g., data collection sheets, stimuli lists, etc.), as well as video clips of treatment sessions using the approaches described in the book. The video clips are tied to actual case studies at the end of each treatment chapter.Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury can serve as a supplemental textbook for graduate courses on neurologic communication disorders. It is also a valuable resource for students during clinical practicum with individuals with TBI (e.g., hospital internships or clinical hours). This book is also a professional resource that summarizes information in a way that is applicable to clinical practice for practicing SLPs. The presence of useable materials on the website, case studies with video clips, and sections with information like candidacy, data collection, and approach modification, all lend themselves to the use of this book as a professional resource.

This collection of short wordless picture books helps to support children with speech, language and communication needs as they develop their expressive sentence and narrative skills through storytelling. Each book is comprised of six colourful images that follow a simple everyday routine such as 'Brushing Teeth', 'Having a Haircut' and 'Walking the Dog'. Unlike traditional picture books, they follow a film scroll effect, showing the progression of time and allowing the child to follow the story to its resolution. Because of their simplicity, the books can support children as they move from simple to intermediate sentence levels, as well as encouraging them to consider additional elements of language such as cause and effect, sequencing and inference. This resource includes: Ten beautifully illustrated picture books, each following a simple pattern of routine, disruption and resolution An accompanying guidebook including story scripts, cue questions and prompts for using the resource to support additional skills Although developed specifically to help children with speech, language and communication needs, this set is suitable for any child who requires support and practice in developing their speech. It is an invaluable resource for speech and language therapists, teaching staff and caregivers.

Developmental Speech Disorders 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition): P. Grunwell Developmental Speech Disorders 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
P. Grunwell
R2,352 Discovery Miles 23 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book looks at the major changes that have occurred in the theory and practice of speech therapy for children with developmental speech disorders. It looks at current issues and their clinical implications, but the overall aim of the book is to set clinical practice firmly in a theoretical framework. While it is therefore essentially a practical book for practitioners, it also engages in the academic investigation of the nature of the different types of developmental speech disorders and their consequences for the children. This discussion provides the framework in which to consider clinical management and specific clinical techniques.

A recurrent theme throughout each chapter is the impact of linguistics upon our understanding and management of children' s problems in learning to pronounce. There is no doubt that the linguistic revolution in speech and language pathology has produced an entirely new perspective on these disorders by identifying the phonological dimension of speech development.

Of equal importance is the expansion of knowledge about children' s language development. Much more information is now available about phonological development in terms of what the developmental changes are and when they occur. This information is valuable in assessment and diagnosis. The book also includes a number of competing theories explaining how children develop their pronunciation patterns. These theories provide the premises upon which to establish a principled theory of therapy.

To reflect these issues and their clinical implications the book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the framework within which to discuss developmental speech disorders. The second section covers three specific types of pathological conditions with which developmental speech disorders are associated. The third section examines the problems of children who have no evident major disabling condition and yet they experience severe difficulties learning to pronounce and subsequently, more often than not, learning to read and write.
