Pathological Voice Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): David Zhang, Kebin Wu Pathological Voice Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
David Zhang, Kebin Wu
R4,661 Discovery Miles 46 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

While voice is widely used in speech recognition and speaker identification, its application in biomedical fields is much less common. This book systematically introduces the authors' research on voice analysis for biomedical applications, particularly pathological voice analysis. Firstly, it reviews the field to highlight the biomedical value of voice. It then offers a comprehensive overview of the workflow and aspects of pathological voice analysis, including voice acquisition systems, voice pitch estimation methods, glottal closure instant detection, feature extraction and learning, and the multi-audio fusion approaches. Lastly, it discusses the experimental results that have shown the superiority of these techniques. This book is useful to researchers, professionals and postgraduate students working in fields such as speech signal processing, pattern recognition, and biomedical engineering. It is also a valuable resource for those involved in interdisciplinary research.

This volume provides a comprehensive and in-depth handbook of qualitative research in the field of communication disorders. It introduces and illustrates the wide range of qualitative paradigms that have been used in recent years to investigate various aspects of communication disorders.

The first part of the Handbook introduces in some detail the concept of qualitative research and its application to communication disorders, and describes the main qualitative research approaches. The contributions are forward-looking rather than merely giving an overview of their topic. The second part illustrates these approaches through a series of case studies of different communication disorders using qualitative methods of research.

This Handbook is an essential resource for senior undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and practitioners, in communication disorders and related fields.

Dyslexia and Literacy - A Tribute to Ingvar Lundberg (Paperback): E Hjelmqist Dyslexia and Literacy - A Tribute to Ingvar Lundberg (Paperback)
E Hjelmqist
R1,942 Discovery Miles 19 420 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Reading and writing skills were once confined to only a few people. Today, a person facing problems with acquiring literacy skills will run the risk of being excluded from fully participating in society. New information tends to imply even more demands on mastering reading and writing than ever before. Dyslexia was used early as a descriptive term for characterising problems of reading and writing. Since the introduction of the term, research has made impressive progress and interdisciplinary fields have been created including social studies, behavioural studies, biology, education and remediation. Above all, dyslexia research has taken a step from being descriptive to suggesting theoretical models for explaining the empirical phenomena observed. This book presents contributions from some of the world leading researchers on these issues in honour of one of the main scholars in the field, Professor Ingvar Lundberg.

Atlas of Operative Techniques in Primary Cleft Lip and Palate Repair (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Percy Rossell-Perry Atlas of Operative Techniques in Primary Cleft Lip and Palate Repair (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Percy Rossell-Perry
R4,046 Discovery Miles 40 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Few books have been published before with details on preoperative planning, markings and performance of primary surgical techniques to correct the cleft lip and palate deformity. This information is commonly required by surgeons. Scientific papers, conferences, and video clips of these surgical procedures are limited in details about how to address this common disease. This book provides a comprehensive overview of surgery for the correction of primary cleft lip and palate, including planning, selecting the most suitable techniques, markings, performing operative techniques, and preoperative care. Unlike other literature on the topic, which focuses on surgical techniques, this operative atlas (with detailed illustrations) covers the entire spectrum of this congenital deformity: classification of cleft lip and palate, management protocols, unilateral cleft lip surgery, bilateral cleft lip surgery, cleft palate surgery, post operative care and case studies. It will be a unique and valuable resource for surgeons treating this common condition.

Children and Mental Health Talk - Perspectives on Social Competence (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Joyce Lamerichs, Susan J. Danby,... Children and Mental Health Talk - Perspectives on Social Competence (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Joyce Lamerichs, Susan J. Danby, Amanda Bateman, Stuart Ekberg
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This timely collection explores how children display social competence in talking about their mental health and wellbeing. The authors analyse recorded conversations of young people's interactions with professionals in which they disclose particular mental health concerns and their ways of coping, drawing on insights from ethnomethodology, conversation analysis and discursive psychology. Across a diverse range of institutional and international settings, chapters examine how children and young people employ interactional strategies to demonstrate their competence. The research reveals how young people resist or protect claims that they lack competence, especially in contexts where they might be seen as seeking or asking for support, or when their (dis)abilities and mental health is explicitly up for discussion. Each chapter concludes with a reflection on the methodological, professional and practical implications of the findings, highlighting areas where future research is necessary and addressing the empirical findings from the authors professional vision, facilitating innovative dialogue between conversation analytic research and professional vision. This book will be of great value to academics and professionals interested in how children express themselves, particularly in relation to their mental wellbeing.

"Here's How to Teach Voice and Communication Skills to Transgender Women'' is a detailed guide to help speech-language pathologists provide intervention for Male-to-Female (MtF) trans clients during the transition process. The empirically supported program guides SLPs to safely modify a MtF trans individual's voice through behavioral modification therapy. SLPs can teach this population how to safely modify their voice through good vocal hygiene, vocal relaxation, breathing support, pitch, resonance, breathiness, and verbal and nonverbal communication. This text presents the Voice and Communication Program for Transgender Women (VCMtF), which was developed to train graduate speech-language pathology students how to deliver voice and communication services. The purpose of this text is to share the VCMtF Program with other speech-language pathologists who will provide voice and communication services to transgender women. The VCMtF Program is unique because it is an easy to use, manualized program that systematically targets voice and verbal and nonverbal communication. Included in this text are resources for the clinician, an introduction to the VCMtF Program, methods and materials for assessment, and step-by-step program sessions. The VCMtF Program is divided into eight sessions with step-by-step instructions for every exercise. Each session is organized using material lists, approximate times, teaching methods, check-ins, feedback, and homework. There are check boxes to mark off the completion of exercises in each area of the program and there is space for the SLP to make clinical observations. Exercises and targets are set up within a hierarchy so that the level of difficulty may be tailored to each client's abilities and how far they have advanced in the program. Julie A. Hengst
R1,580 Discovery Miles 15 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understanding Everyday Communicative Interactions is a unique text that uses a situated discourse analysis (SDA) framework to examine basic human communication and the interactions of those with communicative disorders in everyday and clinical settings. The book introduces SDA as a theoretical and empirical approach for examining the complexities of communicative interaction. It explores how people collaborate in everyday contexts to communicate successfully and how they learn to do so. From close analysis of a pretend game played by two children and their father to an observation of a man with aphasia and his family at a football match, the present volume offers rich portraits of communicative lives and illustrates the applications of SDA. The final part of the book uses SDA methods to demonstrate how clinicians can function as communication partners even during assessments and can design rich communicative environments for therapeutic interventions. In explaining the SDA framework and equipping readers with the tools to understand the nature of human communication, this sophisticated and engaging book will be an essential reference for students, researchers, and clinicians in communication sciences and disorders.

Hearing and Hormones (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016): Andrew H. Bass, Joseph A. Sisneros, Arthur N.... Hearing and Hormones (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Andrew H. Bass, Joseph A. Sisneros, Arthur N. Popper, Richard R Fay
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book reviews the growing literature that is consistent with the hypothesis that hormones can regulate auditory physiology and perception across a broad range of animal taxa, including humans. Understanding how hormones modulate auditory function has far reaching implications for advancing our knowledge in the basic biomedical sciences and in understanding the evolution of acoustic communication systems. A fundamental goal of neuroscience is to understand how hormones modulate neural circuits and behavior. For example, steroids such as estrogens and androgens are well-known regulators of vocal motor behaviors used during social acoustic communication. Recent studies have shown that these same hormones can also greatly influence the reception of social acoustic signals, leading to the more efficient exchange of acoustic information.

Developmental Dysgraphia (Hardcover): Brenda Rapp, Michael McCloskey Developmental Dysgraphia (Hardcover)
Brenda Rapp, Michael McCloskey
R4,494 Discovery Miles 44 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The ability to communicate with written language is critical for success in school and in the workplace. Unfortunately, many children suffer from developmental dysgraphia-impairment in acquiring spelling or handwriting skills-and this form of impairment has received relatively little attention from researchers and educators. This volume brings together, for the first time, theoretically grounded and methodologically rigorous research on developmental dysgraphia, presented alongside reviews of the typical development of spelling and writing skills. Leading experts on writing and dysgraphia shed light on different types of impairments that can affect the learning of spelling and writing skills, and provide insights into the typical development of these skills. The volume, which contributes both to the basic science of literacy and to the applied science of diagnosing and treating developmental dysgraphia, should interest researchers, educators, and clinicians. This book was originally published as a special issue of Cognitive Neuropsychology.

Interaction Between Attention and Language Systems in Humans - A Cognitive Science Perspective (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... Interaction Between Attention and Language Systems in Humans - A Cognitive Science Perspective (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Ramesh Kumar Mishra
R2,089 Discovery Miles 20 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This original volume examines the interface between attentional and linguistic processes in humans from the perspectives of psycholinguistics and cognitive science. It systematically explores how autonomy and automaticity are reflected during language processing in a variety of situations. A true, mechanistic explanation of how humans process language would require a complete understanding of the interface language has with important cognitive systems like attention, memory, as well as with vision. Interdisciplinary work in this area has so far not been able to generate a substantial theoretical position on this issue. This volume therefore looks at different language processing domains, such as speaking, listening, reading, as well as discourse and text processing, to evaluate the role attention plays in such performances; and also at how often linguistic inputs affect attentional processing. In this sense, it proposes that the attention--language interface is bidirectional. It also considers applied issues like language disorders, bilingualism and illiteracy, where the attention--language interface seems especially relevant as a theoretical apparatus for research investigations. Therefore, this volume brings closer theoretical explanations from the language sciences and cognitive sciences. It argues that language processing is multi-modal in its very essence and many conceptual structures in language evolve out of a complex interplay among participating cognitive systems such as attention and memory, supported by vision and audition.

Beyond Individual Differences - Organizing Processes, Information Overload, and Classroom Learning (Paperback, 2012 ed.):... Beyond Individual Differences - Organizing Processes, Information Overload, and Classroom Learning (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Charles A. Ahern, Kenton de Kirby
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In an era of intense interest in educational reform, spurred by increasing global competition for jobs and advancement, it is more critical than ever to understand the nature of learning. And although much attention is paid to differences between learners, short shrift is often given to cognitive functions that characterize successful learning for all students. Yet these are the very functions that determine the difference between successful and rewarding learning versus merely "doing" without truly learning. Firmly grounded in the principles of neuropsychology, Beyond Individual Differences analyzes both successful and unproductive learning in terms of the brain's organizing processes - that is, its unconscious sifting, selecting, and meaning-making that enable students to incorporate and build on what they've learned in the past. At the same time, it explores the learning situations that cause organization to break down and offers several preventive strategies. Key areas of coverage include: The complex role of mental organization in learning and education. Specific organizing processes and the links to success or failure in learning. Information/cognitive overload. The student's experience of learning and its impact on development. Accommodating a range of individual differences in the classroom. Practices for supporting students' unconscious organizing processes. Beyond Individual Differences is essential reading for a wide range of professionals and policy makers as well as researchers and graduate students in school and clinical child psychology, special and general education, social work and school counseling, speech therapy, and neuropsychology.
