Martin R Gitterman, Mira Goral, Loraine K. Obler
R3,545 Discovery Miles 35 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume provides a broad overview of current work in aphasia in individuals who speak more than one language. With contributions from many of the leading researchers in the field, the material included, both experimental work and theoretical overviews, should prove useful to both researchers and clinicians. The book should also appeal to a broader audience, including all who have an interest in the study of language disorders in an increasingly multicultural/multilingual world (e.g. students of speech-language pathology and linguistics). The areas of multilingual aphasia addressed in this collection include assessment and treatment, language phenomena (e.g. code-switching), particular language pairs (including a bidialectal study), and the role of cultural context.

Stuttering and What you can do About it (Paperback, Minne Ed.): Wendell Johnson Stuttering and What you can do About it (Paperback, Minne Ed.)
Wendell Johnson
R1,386 Discovery Miles 13 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a book for parents who are worried about their children's stuttering, for teachers, doctors, friends, and relatives of those who stutter, and for stutterers themselves. It offers help, encouragement, and guidance in dealing with the problem of stuttering, which troubles more than a million persons in the United States alone.Dr. Johnson, an outstanding authority on the subject, writes in simple language so that anyone can readily understand and follow his suggestions. What he says in this book is based on many years of laboratory research and clinical observation, and his own experience as a stutterer. He tells of his early years of struggle with the handicap and his decision to devote his life to getting at the basic causes of stuttering and finding ways to prevent or alleviate it. He describes his research experiences, likening them to a detective story centered on a search for the causes of stuttering as the culprit in the case. In this account he quotes from interviews which he conducted with parents in an effort to pinpoint the exact conditions or situations in which stuttering was believed to have started. He explains how the problem develops and how it becomes a frustrating "sad-go-round." Finally, he tells what parents and others can do for children who are threatened with the handicap of stuttering and what adult stutterers can do to help themselves.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication Intervention - An Intensive, Immersive, Socially Based Service Delivery Model... Augmentative and Alternative Communication Intervention - An Intensive, Immersive, Socially Based Service Delivery Model (Paperback)
Janet L. Dodd
R2,567 Discovery Miles 25 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Augmentative and Alternative Communication Intervention: An Intensive, Immersive, Socially Based Delivery Model" is ideal for school based speech-language pathologists, and an excellent resource for interventionists (special education teachers, ABA therapists) and speech-language pathologists in other settings, that wish to develop an intensive, immersive Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) based intervention through the three phases of the intervention process: assessment, intervention planning, and intervention implementation.Written by an SLP who has worked in a public school setting and saw to the application of theory to practice, the text provides detailed information regarding working with children who have complex communication needs, and the background knowledge necessary for successful implementation of the intervention approach. Included are considerations for vocabulary selection for the beginning communicator, how to create a symbolically rich environment, detailed intervention approaches, and progress monitoring strategies that establish appropriate, measurable goals. AAC will no longer be an alternative means of communication, but a best practice means of teaching communication in the SPL or interventionist repertoire.

The Waveform Model of Vowel Perception and Production (Paperback): Michael A. Stokes The Waveform Model of Vowel Perception and Production (Paperback)
Michael A. Stokes
R705 Discovery Miles 7 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents a new model of vowel perception and production derived from visual cues identified in waveform displays. In addition to describing waveform displays of vowels beyond previous descriptions, included in the book are descriptions of experimental evidence supporting near 100% vowel identification accuracy across 20 male talkers using the concepts in the model. The book content will be of interest to several academic fields including Cognitive Science, Psychology, Linguistics, Speech and Hearing, Language Acquisition, Neurolinguistics, Phonetics, and areas within Physics and Mathematics. Beyond these academic fields, the new model of vowel perception presented here could possibly be used to improve accuracy and speed within existing speech recognition systems, or it could be used to generate a new speech recognition program. Many speech recognition programs are based on simple statistical programs like Hidden Markov Models that ignore any theoretical basis to speech recognition. The Waveform Model differs from the HMM approaches since it has a theoretical basis rooted in articulation and that has potentially more promise than these simple HMM models that just take overall similarities in waveforms and try to match them to phonemes and words. Furthermore, many of the speech recognition programs use extensive training by a single user (in quiet conditions) in order to attain over 90% accuracy, which is still a relatively poor performance. The Waveform Model requires no training, can be used across talkers, and has accuracy above reported speech recognition performance (specific to vowels). In summary, the Waveform Model is innovative, and new to the literature and research communities.

The Symbiotic Relationship between Pitch Discrimination Skills and Emotional Speech (Paperback): Kenneth Nashkoff The Symbiotic Relationship between Pitch Discrimination Skills and Emotional Speech (Paperback)
Kenneth Nashkoff
R1,017 Discovery Miles 10 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Previous research indicates that a relationship between music lessons and speech prosody skills exists. Speech prosody, like music, uses variations in pitch, tone, and volume to add an emotional content to communications. Studies suggest that musical training transfers its effects into speech prosody skills. The relationship between the pitch discrimination skills used in music training and speech prosody has largely been unexamined. This book examines the hypothesis that differences would be found in the pretest and posttest prosody skills of a treatment group which received pitch discrimination practice. Music majors received eight weeks pitch discrimination practice and were given a pretest and posttest to assess pitch discrimination and speech prosody decoding abilities. A control group was also pre tested and post tested on their speech prosody skills. The Comprehensive Affect Testing System recorded speech prosody skills, and pitch discrimination testing was recorded. Results of data analysis support the hypothesis that pitch discrimination practice does transfers to speech prosody decoding skills. Such transfer may be a hidden, unexplored benefit of formal musical lessons. From a perspective of social change, this strongly suggests that such a nontraditional and short-term pitch discrimination practice intervention can improve emotional speech decoding skills. Increasing prosody accuracy benefits professionals and all who depend upon accurate interpretation of interpersonal communication. The implications for communication improvements through a practice mode of musical ear training has unlimited potentials. Kenneth Nashkoff has been a professional musician for over twenty years, composing music and working with various ensembles. With a Ph.D in Psychology, and years of experience as a working musician, the relationship between music and emotions is explored in this book.

Mind Matters - Setting the Stage for Satisfying Clinical Service. A Personal Essay. (Paperback): Ellen-Marie Silverman Mind Matters - Setting the Stage for Satisfying Clinical Service. A Personal Essay. (Paperback)
Ellen-Marie Silverman
R425 Discovery Miles 4 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What we as audiologists and speech-language pathologists believe about ourselves, others, and the world around us influences our work at least as much as our knowledge of audiology and communication sciences and disorders, according to speech-language pathologist Ellen-Marie Silverman, Ph.D. A Fellow of the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association, she believes the more clearly we as practitioners perceive our personal core beliefs, which reside below the level of casual awareness, the more effective we can be meeting clients' and caregivers' concerns. In "Mind Matters," she introduces a simple, straight-forward method for identifying deeply held personal beliefs that, if undetected, could repeatedly sabotage clinical relationships. Then she describes five basic beliefs about working as a clinician that lead to highly skilled service. Examples and anecdotes drawn from her varied and extensive clinical and teaching experience showcase the value, ease, and challenges of applying these helpful beliefs to daily work in any environment. Dr. Silverman delivers this basic information in a mentor-friendly style to all intended readers, the student-in-training, the employed clinician, and the clinician planning to resume a career. The practical focus with which she addresses this rarely addressed yet critical aspect of clinical work, i.e., detecting personal core beliefs, makes "Mind Matters" a unique contribution to clinical preparation and development. Dr. Silverman reminds us that the relationship we as practitioners foster with clients and caregivers is our most important tool. Identifying personal core beliefs which form the infrastructure for professional relationships and selecting and cultivating beliefs that encourage maximal growth of clinical partners contributes greatly to experiencing a satisfying, effective, and long-lived career. This book will occupy a central place in your professional library. Dr. Silverman is also the author of "Mindfulness & Stuttering: Using Eastern Strategies to Speak with Greater Ease," "Relief From Stuttering: Laying the Groundwork to Speak with Greater Ease," and "Jason's Secret," a middle reader novel about a 10 year-old boy taking his first constructive steps to resolve his stuttering problem. ***Also available as a Kindle ebook.***

Language and Literacy Disorders - Infancy through Adolescence (Paperback): Nickola Nelson Language and Literacy Disorders - Infancy through Adolescence (Paperback)
Nickola Nelson
R417 Discovery Miles 4 170 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

Organized with a clear framework and student-friendly learning supports, this textbook helps graduate and undergraduate students gain essential knowledge that can inform, and transform, their work with children who need special assistance to acquire language and literacy abilities to meet multiple communication and learning needs. Featuring content and questions that encourage deeper thinking about the nature of disordered and normal development, this text makes assessment and intervention practices relevant to contexts of home, classroom, and peer interactions. In particular, readers will learn to draw on multiple sources of input to develop an assessment picture for a child at any age and stage of development as a person with unique strengths and needs, coming from a particular cultural-linguistic background, and with concerns that may be attributed to a particular known or unknown but suspected set of etiological factors. Additionally, readers will learn to plan interventions that target developmentally appropriate outcomes in spoken and written language and to apply techniques that are informed by varied theoretical perspectives and a growing evidence base. This text is organized into three sections that are designed to promote understanding of: (1) basic concepts, taxonomies, policies, and procedures that can inform other decisions; (2) implications of common etiologies (e.g., primary language impairment/learning disability, hearing impairment, autism spectrum disorders, mental retardation/cognitive impairment; acquired neurological impairment) for modifying assessment and intervention practices; and (3) appropriate assessment and intervention procedures across developmental language and literacy ages, stages, and targets. Instructors can guide students through the sections and chapters, review and practice material, and extended exercises, so students can gain confidence they will know what to do when facing diverse populations of real children in a variety of settings. Although the book is written primarily for students in speech-language pathology, it draws on the author's experience working in schools and classrooms with general and special education teachers and other interdisciplinary team members and can be used with (or by) members of other disciplines and by practitioners as well as students. The ultimate beneficiaries of this book should be children and adolescents who grow up with improved abilities to communicate, read, write, listen, and speak because they received services from professionals who knew what they were doing and why.

Music and Dyslexia - A Positive Approach (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed): T. R. Miles Music and Dyslexia - A Positive Approach (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed)
T. R. Miles
R1,794 Discovery Miles 17 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a sequel to the highly successful and insightful "Music and Dyslexia" -- "Opening New Doors." It takes up some of the themes mentioned in the earlier book, including sight-reading and the problems of mastering musical notation. The positive approach to dyslexia advocated by the contributors reflects their experience over many years and will be an encouragement alike to dyslexic musicians and their teachers.

The book has four sections. The first section, tackling problems, explains what dyslexia is, describes some of the developmental differences of which teachers and others need to be aware and outlines some of the circumstances which may cause problems for dyslexics that are not obvious at first glance. The second section, in and around the classroom, looks at significant aspects of teaching and learning music in the pupil's life. Early years, winning over reluctant musicians, musical games to play in the language classroom, sight-reading and what role computers can play are all discussed, with practical ideas and suggestions for the teacher.

The third section looks at strategies and successes. It embraces both the maturing voice and oboes as well as links between acknowledged early precepts and advice given at a critical period of a student's life in Higher Education. The final section looks at the neurological aspect of dyslexia, focusing on the newest research in brain imaging to expand our knowledge of what the brain is doing while music is being engaged in.

"Music and Dyslexia - A Positive Approach" increases understanding and imaginatively challenges the difficulties those with dyslexia and their teachers' encounter whilst positively urging all to enjoymusic's pleasures.

Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Children with Speech Disorder (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Barbara Dodd Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Children with Speech Disorder (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Barbara Dodd
R2,049 Discovery Miles 20 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Paediatric speech and language therapists are challenged by diminished resources and increasingly complex caseloads. The new edition addresses their concerns. Norms for speech development are given, differentiating between the emergence of the ability to produce speech sounds (articulation) and typical developmental error patterns (phonology).

The incidence of speech disorders is described for one UK service providing crucial information for service management. The efficacy of service provision is evaluated to show that differential diagnosis and treatment is effective for children with disordered speech. Exploration of that data provides implications for prioritising case loads. The relationship between speech and language disorders is examined in the context of clinical decisions about what to target in therapy.

New chapters provide detailed intervention programmes for subgroups of speech disorder: delayed development, use of atypical error patterns, inconsistent errors and development verbal dyspraxia.

The final section of the book deals with special populations: children with cognitive impairment, hearing and auditory processing difficulties. The needs of clinicians working with bilingual populations are discussed and ways of intervention described. The final chapter examines the relationship between spoken and written disorders of phonology.
