This volume on athletic injury is timely because it addresses many
types of sports injuries and focuses not only on the treatments of
these injuries, but also their prevention. The first paper was
written after an extensive interview with the coaches of one of the
most recognized football programs in the country. Dr. Kevin Chung's
interviews with the Head and Assistant Coaches at the University of
Michigan, Jim Harbaugh and Jedd Fisch, provided thoughtful insight
on preventing sports injuries in the professional and college
athletics.
Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians across
the country see injured runners every day. Running injuries may
impact other areas of the body and PM&R physicians are trained
to treat the body as a whole, as opposed to treating just the
injury, they work to identify the true source of the problem and
develop a training or rehabilitation program to solve it.

Disorders, and many more!
The word concussion used to be unheard of in youth sports a decade
ago. The brain injury was indeed occurring, but coaches and parents
were encouraging their youth athletes to "shake it off" after
"getting their bell rung". Science and increased awareness about
concussion are transforming the way youth parents, coaches, and
players pursue athletics. Fear of incurring concussions, as well as
incorrect information, is leading some parents to keep their
children out of contact sports, such as football and soccer, where
concussion is more prevalent. Back in the Game: Why Concussion
Doesn't Have to End Your Athletic Career does not dwell on
perpetuating fears, but rather, provides the most up-to-date
understanding of the condition. This text includes a real-world
discussion of what science and medicine knows, what parents and
coaches need to understand about concussions, evaluation and
treatment, and possible post-concussive issues, like depression. At
the heart of this book, the authors delve into these issues,
explaining them in a clear and understandable way. The expertise
and experiences of noted sports neurologist Jeffrey Kutcher, MD,
along with reporting and interviews by award-winning sports
journalist Joanne C. Gerstner, makes this book a timely, relevant,
and real discussion about concussions in youth sports. Athletes and
professional coaches who have participated in the formation of this
book include two-time Olympic gold medalist soccer player Kate
Markgraf, former NHL/Team Canada head coach Andy Murray, champion
X-Games snowboarder Ellery Hollingsworth, along with an array of
youth parents, coaches, and athletes from across the country.
MCQs in Sports Medicine contains a wide selection of multiple

In this highly practical guide, acclaimed physical therapist and
international lecturer Daniel Lawrence dispels some of the myths
around cupping therapy and shows how it deserves to be viewed as a
highly credible and versatile therapeutic tool in modern practice
Cupping-an ancient therapy which uses vacuum cups placed over the
skin to treat a wide range of health conditions-appears in one of
the earliest medical textbooks ever written and has been used in
cultures around the world for thousands of years. Though much
maligned by its perception as a "complementary therapy," the
emergence of modern research supporting the use of cupping to treat
musculoskeletal conditions has seen it enjoy a huge resurgence in
recent years. You only need look at the unmistakable cupping marks
visible on Olympic swimmers to see how valued it is within
professional sport. An ancient treatment, a new way Presented with
clear descriptions, color photographs, and QR codes linking to
online video tutorials, Lawrence's approach to dry cupping offers
enhanced treatment outcomes and methods that are more readily
accepted by Western medicine and modern manual therapy bodyworkers.
These are techniques that deliver maximum benefit whilst minimizing
some of the less desirable after-effects of more traditional
methods. Starting with the history of cupping, the book guides you
through the principles of application with illustrated protocols
for musculoskeletal conditions of the foot, ankle, lower leg, knee,
thigh, hip, back, shoulder, wrist, hand, elbow, and neck. Whether
you are looking to treat Achilles tendinitis, carpal tunnel
syndrome, or low back pain, Lawrence illustrates why cupping is a
safe and effective choice of treatment. Where this book differs
from others, however, is that it introduces the concept of using
passive and active movement in a treatment. In this way, cupping
can be viewed as an enhanced form of both massage and exercise
rehabilitation. Couple this with a valuable understanding of how
these techniques influence the nervous system and cupping now
stands up to "evidence-based" scrutiny. This is modern cupping!
A simple, go-to guide to treating chronic pain with trigger point
therapy for physical therapists, bodyworkers, and patients From the
bestselling author of The Concise Book of Trigger Points This
pocket-sized guide covers practical information about the trigger
points-the painful knots that can form in tissues like muscles and
fascia-that are central to addressing acute and chronic pain with
massage, bodywork, and physical therapy. Full-color illustrations

trigger points and address referred pain patterns with ease. The
first chapter introduces relevant information on fascia and
myofascial meridians and provides an overview of trigger point
symptoms, classification, and formation. Subsequent chapters are
organized by muscle group and feature concise-yet
comprehensive-sections on each of the main skeletal muscles and
their trigger points. Common conditions, such as headaches and back
pain, are explored for all of the muscle groups, including the
muscles of the: * Face, head, and neck * Trunk and spine * Shoulder
and arm * Forearm and hand * Hip and thigh * Leg and foot Written

of knowledge to the lay reader, the student, or the practitioner.
The relationship between sleep and both mental and physical
performance in athletes has become a key issue over the past
several years. Sleep and Athletes: Physical Performance, Mental
Performance, Injury Prevention, and Competitive Advantage for
Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers aims to synthesize the growing
scientific evidence in this area to help researchers, clinicians,
and others interested in sport to understand the fundamentals of
sleep health and how these factors relate to athletes. Serving as
an important bridge between the sleep and athletics field, the book
educates sleep professionals about how their field of expertise
relates to various aspects of athletics, whilst educate sports
professionals about the basics of sleep and how it relates to their
field of expertise. This is accomplished by explaining some of the
basics of sleep health; reviewing the literature on sleep
disorders, treatments, risk factors for athletes; discussing ways
that sleep health impacts physical and mental performance; and
addressing key specific areas where these fields overlap. In all
cases, this text will draw from the existing peer-reviewed
literature, in order to provide evidence-based guidance that is
objective and well-explained.

This book explores how to recognize, treat, and prevent sports
injuries and offers guidance on which sports and training
techniques are most likely to lead to injury. Engaging in sports
has numerous health benefits, but it's an unfortunate reality that
it can also lead to injury. Some sports, such as football and
cheerleading, are particularly notorious for causing harm to young
athletes. Specializing in a particular sport or going too hard too
fast can also lead to injury. But which injuries are most likely to
occur, and how should they be treated in both the short- and
long-term? When should an injured athelete consider surgery? When
is it safe to get back in the game? Books in Greenwood's Q&A
Health Guides series follow a reader-friendly question-and-answer
format that anticipates readers' needs and concerns. Prevalent
myths and misconceptions are identified and dispelled, and a
collection of case studies illustrate key concepts and issues
through relatable stories and insightful recommendations. Each book
also includes a section on health literacy, equipping teens and
young adults with practical tools and strategies for finding,
evaluating, and using credible sources of health information both
on and off the internet-important skills that contribute to a
lifetime of healthy decision-making. Simple Q&A format makes
